Don't expect a second line of denizens from Odessa to come marching down the street behind this band. Rather, you should steel yourself for energetic, aggressive, modern music with deep respect for the roots of klezmer but a determined forward approach and a bit of a sly, sideways grin. It's all fair game for this band that ruthlessly mixes Jewish theater with a Louis Armstrong downbeat or a Latin backbeat. Expert musicianship and tight chops are tempered by a sense of humor that produces songs to match zany titles like "Struttin' with Some Doner Kebab," "Moroccan Roller," and "Not Too Eggy." Whether it's Arab and Jewish jazz or rock and locks, this band produces a big sound. Accordion, clarinets, and saxophones dance with a heavy rhythm section, particularly induced by drummer Kevin O'Day and bass partner Arthur Kastler. Great tunes; not a tchotchke in the lot. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Better than you might think!.......2002-06-19

At first glance, you might give these guys the cold shoulder. With their klezmer stylings, along with accordian, guitar, and bass, you might think these guys would be most at home at a Bar Mitzvah.

You'd be dead wrong. I saw these guys play their songs from this CD at New Orleans and they TORE THE PLACE UP! These guys are unbelievable. You will not be able to keep yourself from dancing. Not only is their musicianship unbelievable, but they also know how to groove like no other.

If you can, I recommend you see them live. Barring that, the CD will do you just fine.

5 out of 5 stars You must own this album!.......1999-10-04

This band is fierce and festive! They are rich with passion, humor and artistry. I have never gotten hooked on a sound so immediately and fervently. Every song is a mad celebration!

5 out of 5 stars Jazz & Klezmer flying at you.......1999-08-19

These guys tear it up! With the strange yet exciting combination of Klezmer and Jazz in a whirl wind of notes. For anyone who is interested in Jazz, Klezmer or even a little funk this is a must. Also check out their other CDs and Galactic which has Ben Ellman (sax) and their origional drummer Stanton More. Also check Stanton's CD featuring Ben.

I purchased this on a guess, not a whim. And I must say that I guessed correctly. There is not a bad cut on this entire cd. I have to say my favorites are, 'Dance Like Nobody's Looking', 'I Love Jazz!", 'Les Cinq Notes Magiques' and...and...
See what I mean? I'm feeling this one deeply. So go ahead and take the plunge. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars move over 'Smooth Jazz'..........2002-07-11

I've been hearing the title track from this album just lately on a lot of (smooth) jazz radio stations, and although the title track lends itself to that genre of music particularly well, it has to be said the rest of the album takes modern jazz-funk & dance music a lot further than the likes of Kenny G, Gerald Albright & all the other 'Smooth' acts that (in my opinion) don't even deserve the use of the word jazz as concerns their usual output! For example, the opening track, "Fusao" is an excellent fusion ("Fusao" means "Fusion" in Portuguese I've found) of funk, Samba & future jazz that has already set European dancefloors alight for a while now apparently. Along with this are 11 other tracks that all deserve equal mention. Suffice to say the album comes with two tracks that DO deserve a special mention, namely the US-only bonus tracks; the exceedingly clever "Dance like Nobody's Looking" & the Samba groover "Mosquito Coast '98", the latter having been remixed by none other than DOWN TO THE BONE! In fact, The bass player from Mr.Gone actually appears on the latest DTTB album!! (Strange but true). Ignore this album at your peril, unless of course you're happy with Kenny G & the rest, there's really no hope for you!!

How does one begin to describe a voice as beautiful as Anisa Romero's? Haunting, lush, stirring...the adjectives keep pouring out. Easily the most expressive and talented vocalist I have ever heard. Couple that with the gorgeous audio landscape that Jeff Greinke has built for each song and you have an album that is more than music...it is a sensory journey. Put it on, dim the lights, close your eyes, and bask in the glory.

Subtitled - The Complete Warwick Sessions. The Donald Byrd & Pepper Adams Quintet featuring Herbie Hancock, recorded in New York City, 1961. Seven tracks. Fresh Sounds. 2003.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good tunes, bad sound quality.......2004-03-28

Variable quality of the recording as its all in mono. The tune Out of this world sounds like they have only
included either left or right channel as the beginning of the tune is a bit off mike when Pepper and Donald plays.
Tune Curro's marred by some bad editing.
This recording is available in a few different releases, however none of them in a stereo version that apparently would
be existing somewhere if its not destroyed or lost.

Recommended to anyone who like Donald, Pepper and Herbie.

5 out of 5 stars An astounding historical set.......2003-09-11

This is an astonishing collection of tunes recorded for Warwick Records in 1961 in New York. There's no sign of remastering, but the quality of the original sound is excellent. It's tagged as being by the "Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams quintet", but as much as it's about their peerless playing, it's also about the piano contribution of a very young Herbie Hancock, and the tightness of the the rhythm section of Jimmy Cobb on drums and Laymon Jackson on Bass. The three lengthy tracks are the ones to start with. The playing on "Byrd House" (10.50) sets the standard of what is to come. Obviously it's a Donald Byrd composition, but all three men get to solo peerlessly, and the ensemble playing is absolutely terrific. The initial highlight for me is a version of Byrd's "Curro's" (11.50) which gives everybody a chance to spread out, though Hancock's piano is (sorry, here's that word again!) astounding, and both the other frontline players are spurred on to deliver first-rate solos. The CD ends with a version of Arlen and Mercer's "Out of this World" on which Byrd's playing of the melody before Hancock solos is breathtaking, and when he plays the second chorus it's even better than the first! Track 6 has some muted vibraphone added to the mix from Teddy Charles. This is a "must have" set if you admire the playing of any of the three frontsmen. It's also worth looking out for some of the other sessions that have been re-released by this small Spanish label. Don't hesitate - order it immediately!

        4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-01-27

I've only just listened to a few samples of this album, and I, too, strongly disagree with the poor review below. Vivien Ellis has a wonderfully sweet soprano. As for the men, well, classically trained singers hardly existed in the 12th and 13th Centuries (unless you sang in a monastery). That's what makes this album sound so authentic. Everyone sounds so REAL. 4 stars from me - good album, but not really outstanding. Still, I could fall in love with Vivien Ellis' voice pretty fast. Nice work!

        5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2004-03-19

I have to disagree with the poor review below. This is a WONDERFUL CD of medieval music, and I have many to compare it to! The instrumentals are light, fun and cleverly arranged. And I love the vocals. They're perfect for this style of music - clean, clear, and sometimes folksy. Vivien Ellis's soprano is lovely. The nasal intonation of the men on a few of the numbers (and it is not extreme--I've heard it done much stronger) reflects a choice some early musicians make based on the remnants of this music that still exist within the modern folk music traditions that descend from it. Give this gem a chance and you won't be disappointed. It's a joyful and refreshing trip into the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with elements both gently alien and pleasantly familiar. I play it over and over again and have not yet tired of it. Happy listening!

        2 out of 5 stars Too ambitious!.......2001-11-22

The only reason I give this album a rating as high as two stars is because I love the music, because the instrumental pieces are great, and because it's always a pleasure to hear the delightful voice of Vivien Ellis.

But who told the guys, who are skilled instrumentalists, that they could sing??? The tenor sings flat, the baritone is totally drowned out by the tenor, the bass seems to be just going through the motions, and they all seem to sing through their noses. Skilled instrumental musicians they may well be, but these guys obviously don't have much training or experience in any kind of singing. The complex rhythms and precise tuning necessary for this kind of music seem totally beyond their current capabilities.

If this album had been done by anyone but the Dufay Collective, the Chandos A&R representative would have promptly sent the demo back to them with a form rejection letter. The guys may have talent as vocalists, but before they try to promote themselves as singers I would recommend that they get some voice training, do a lot of practicing and get some performing experience. Only then should they try to cut another album where they sing. Boys, for now at least, let's stick to the instruments!
