The wholesome folk movement of the late 1950s--an era where every frat member worth his letterman's sweater strummed an acoustic guitar--was led in part by Washington State's the Brothers Four. The group boasted a similar repertoire to the better known Kingston Trio but outdid them on at least one count: they had an extra member. They also had some truly great hits, including "Greenfields," "Yellow Bird," and "Green Leaves of Summer." On this best-of compilation, the Brothers play some of their most enduring songs (yes, decades later, they're still touring with these legendary tunes). On "Lemon Tree," they show their balladic skills; on "If I Had a Hammer," they unleash their spirited side. On standards such as "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore," "Tom Dooley," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," the Brothers Four don't pull any punches in their delivery; their singing is a clarion call to restful youth. For a more rambunctious look at the quartet, check out their live Tokyo Tapes double-CD, where medleys and even a few solos will have your toes tapping. Gold, indeed. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Greenfields and Other Gold.......2006-06-27
Great in an awkward decade.......2006-05-08
There are treasures here which only come to those who wait. One is Marianne - the lyrics are, of course, absolutely silly to begin with, but what they do with them this time around is amazing. Not to forget that the original members are about 15 years older than when they first recorded this song, and so the asides are more seasoned, and in some ways more humorous. The sound design is fantastic, vividly evoking the glimmering seashore and the surreal people who choose to spend their entire lives in such a place. Another is Tom Dooley: a performance with a lot of texture; nay, culture (if you appreciate early Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt or Carlos Gardel recordings, you'll know what I mean by "culture"). If I Had a Hammer and Michael, Row the Boat Ashore sound stronger and more focused than the originals, and Both Sides Now and Lemon Tree hold some delightful surprises of their own. The John B. Sails sounds to me like a nocturnal voyage under a starry sky, reminds me of Paul Klee's Sindbad the Sailor - another reviewer likened the whole album to one of Van Gogh's "starry night" paintings.
So if you're wondering how time affected both perception and interpretation in The Brothers Four, this album will have much to yield.
A quick afterthought: I recently noticed that some people think of The Brothers Four as a cover band. Such people will find this CD irritating, not least because they "cover" themselves (i.e. Greenfields and Green Leaves of Summer). But those who know that being original in music implies much more than just inventing the lyrics and the chord progressions will be fascinated by what they have accomplished on this album and elsewhere. Besides, these gentlemen have written their own songs, nice ones too.
Easy listening sixties folk quartet.......2003-02-22
Many of the other songs here are covers, including Walk right in (a 1920's ragtime song which they would have covered after hearing the Rooftop singers), Lemon tree (Peter Paul and Mary), The John B sails (better known as Sloop John B, the title used by the Beach boys), Michael row the boat ashore (Highwaymen), Blowing in the wind, Don't think twice its alright (both Bob Dylan), Tom Dooley (Kingston Trio), This land is your land (Woody Guthrie), Both sides now (written by Joni Mitchell and popularised by Judy Collins), Green green (New Christy Minstrels), Where have all the flowers gone (Pete Seeger) and Lady Greensleeves (a traditional song allegedly written by King Henry VIII around 1580). Another Pete Seeger song here, If I had a hammer, became a hit for both Peter Paul and Mary and Trini Lopez.
The line-up when these tracks were recorded consisted of Bob Flick (upright bass), Mike Kirkland (guitar, banjo), John Paine (guitar) and Richard Foley (guitar). All four sang vocals.
Anybody interested in the early sixties folk revival will enjoy this album, even if many of the songs are familiar.

Album Description
After their adoptive mother is murdered during a grocery story holdup, the Mercer brothers hotheaded Bobby (Mark Walberg), hard-edged Angel (Tyrese Gibson), family man and businessman Jeremiah (Andri Benjamin), and hard rocking Jack (Garrett Hedlund) reunite to take the matter of her death into their own hands. As they track down the killer, they quickly realize that their old ways of doing business have new consequences. In this character-driven action-drama from acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious), four brothers come together to discover that they are bound by ties thicker than blood. The jazzy, orchestral score is by composer David Arnold.Customer Reviews:

Album Description
While a mainstay on the folk club circuit, the Grammy-nominated Brothers Four put ten albums onto the Billboard charts in the '60s. The group also appeared regularly on the TV shows of Ed Sullivan, Pat Boone, Mitch Miller, and others. Among the sing-along favorites on this "Two for One" CD are the classic folk tunes "If I Had a Hammer," "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "Ole Smokey," and more.Customer Reviews:

One of the best Twofers of The Brothers Four.......2003-04-14
It's a bit discouraging why a boxed set has not been released from this tremendous group, which skyrocked to fame with "Greenfields" and "The Green Leaves of Summer." I have since purchased every lp they've put out, and put them on Compact Disc myself. Perhaps one day this will be corrected, but this twofer, combined with the Big Folk Hits is a must have for ANY fan of the great Brothers Four. Don't miss it!!
Perhaps one day we will have "Rally Round", "More Big Folk Hits", "Roamin'", "Let's Get Together", "A New World's Record" and "The Honey Wind Blows" out on CD as well. There is also a Japan only release, in '73 of the Brothers Four in concert. These contain tremendous performances as well.
Given the way CDs go out of print so fast, I'd grab this one. I've given many as gifts to those who have never heard them, and all respond with loving comments, and even order more for themselves. The recordings on these albums will never be topped!!
Great to see this!.......2000-09-17

Brother Four - The Sign of our Times / The Honey Wind Blows.......2006-11-03
The album is two LP's from the Sixties and reproduced on CD.
Good music will never fade.
Beautiful songs, genuine musicians.......2006-05-08
On the Sing of Our Times album, there is not one song which won't stir your soul, and some will not rest until your body does the rhythm! This album was originally issued in 1964, when the Civil Rights Movement was at its peak, and the choice of songs reflects this mood in an elegant, understated way. Which brings me to this: The Brothers Four never forget to be musicians and never compromise their music. These guys are just as careful about how they express what they express, and their level of artistry, to my mind, surpasses that of other folk groups even when they offer pointed social commentary. The songs on this album were arranged by Milt Okun, a classical pianist who loved folk songs and worked closely with Harry Belafonte; he was also musical director of The Brothers Four for a few years, and this classical influence shows especially in the intricacy of the vocal arrangements. On this album, you'll find one of the most beautiful love songs of all time, performed as only The Brothers Four can when they're totally focused: Seven Daffodils. All four Brothers are superb, but Dick Foley, the lead singer, deserves special mention. This track will prove beyond a doubt that he is blessed with one of the finest voices ever recorded, and that he knows how to use it. His pronunciation is gorgeous! I also enjoy listening to Beans Taste Fine, a humorous song by the legendary Shelby Silverstein, sung so well by Mike Kirkland. (One can only speculate how the group would have evolved had he stayed, but I can certainly understand why so many Brothers Four fans miss him.)
The second album on this CD, The Honey Wind Blows, presents a more eclectic array of songs, from film soundtracks to blues to children's songs. As far as I can tell, there is no outside arranger for the songs on this album, so The Brothers Four are probably on their own here. Not that one notices any dip in quality. The title song alone is worth the price of this entire CD. Wicked of them all to put Cleano right after The Honey Wind Blows, but if this track doesn't part you from whatever blues you're nursing, nothing will! John Paine is fantastic as the little kiddy, and I've seldom heard anything more hilarious; plus you get to hear the most difficult percussion instrument to master (ha!). According to the liner notes, Cleano was partly improvised, so one take was all it took. It does have the air of a live performance; for one thing, you can clearly hear that the guys have a hard time keeping a straight face. Another fun song is Lazy Harry's - the most flamboyant Brother, Bob Flick, really shines here. Now, this guy is truly grand! (To really appreciate the scope of his dramatic flair as well as his intelligence, I'd recommend the two live albums from the 60's, In Person and Cross Country, also on one CD.)
There is a bonus track on this CD, Hootenanny Saturday Night, which is the title song of the Hootenanny TV show that ran from 1963 to 1964 (it seems all guest musicians on the show sang it, and this is The Brothers Four version). Whenever I listen to it, I become absorbed by the banjo playing (that's probably Mike Kirkland) and eagerly await the final bars.
As for the red-blooded approach, never fear: there is plenty of it on this CD. That is, if you don't equate sloppiness, roughness and vulgarity with being "a real folk musician".

Two of Their Greatest -- At LAST!!.......2006-08-22
Though many songs have been released on other collections, nothing can really take the place of hearing an album in it's original state. The BF wrote many of the songs on both albums, and they are just as much standouts as the others. It's an absolute amazing feat that these boys were in the studio so often after their initial Columbia signing. Every album they have put out is a gem, including their later offerings.
To put even a standout song on this twofer would be doing the group itself an injustice. Every song is terrific, and in the original sound. Many compilations have had the left and right tracks mixed wrongly, not so here. "Follow the Drinking Gourd" has always been a favorite, but excluded from other CDs. I have both of these lps, and now am most fortunate to have them on CD. I literally cannot stop playing this super twofer.
I only hope their entire Columbia catalog will be released, along with other great albums after. This would get ten stars if I could put it. This group is my personal favorite of all of the "folk" genre of the early and mid '60s. Viva~!
Rally and roam!.......2006-06-07
John Paine: "The important thing is for the audience to have as much fun as we do [see liner notes from Rally `Round]." And these Brothers Four albums still sound fresh and engaging after almost half a century.
Many thanks to Collector' Choice for making these wonderful albums available once again, and hopefully they never get the idea to stop.
