1 out of 5 stars Unamused..........2007-06-24

I reviewed this album at the request of a family member. In summary, it has most of the instruments of Don Williams with absolutely none of his beautiful vocals. True music lovers will realize that energy alone does not make beautiful music, just empty entertainment.

Take an old moldy garage and throw in Chrissy Hynde, Rammstein, George Strait, and the Ramones all at their worst and you have these guys. They sound like Clash wannabees with a banjo.

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......2007-06-11

Yes, no recording can capture the feel of their live performances (especially outdoor performances) but this CD is nothing less than classic. Almost every song is memorable as the more you listen to it, the more and more you come to appreciate just what this CD accomplishes. It is very difficult to pin down their sound (they won't do it), but I would describe it as a mix of punk rock and folk. They are now officially my favorite group and this is my favorite CD of theirs.

5 out of 5 stars The kind of music I've been waiting to find..........2007-05-20

Beautiful lyrics with real feeling... You can tell they put so much heart into it. It's a fantastic album with beautiful, lyrical slow songs and upbeat foot-stompin' songs that you can't help but dance with. Also highly recommend their new album, EMOTIONALISM.

1 out of 5 stars not so hot.......2007-05-12

I saw these guys at an art festival in Alabama last year. I'm all for high energy and making old sounds new, but these guys just seemed like hipsters playing really loud and without much substance. "Hey, I have an idea - punk rock on a banjo!" Wow, that's a new one. You need to have something more than that to make interesting music. This album seems a tad more subtle than their live show, but not much.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-05-11

I discovered the Avett Brothers reading an article on Ramseur Records. In doing further research, I discovered the Avett brothers were former guitar students of a good friend and the Avett family are friends with he and his wife. "Four Thieves Gone" was more or less a random pick of their albums. I read the Avett Brothers had a popular stage performance and played a rock'n bluegrass so I was expecting music more akin to something like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I have not listened to the band's other albums or a performance. But I didn't hear anything in this albums that would fit the stage performance image in the article. "Four Thieves Gone" may have been an studio experiment for the Avett Brothers....something like the Beattles' White Album was for the Beattles. I enjoy the album quite a bit but I am not sure fans of modern day bluegrass or even rock will agree.

The wholesome folk movement of the late 1950s--an era where every frat member worth his letterman's sweater strummed an acoustic guitar--was led in part by Washington State's the Brothers Four. The group boasted a similar repertoire to the better known Kingston Trio but outdid them on at least one count: they had an extra member. They also had some truly great hits, including "Greenfields," "Yellow Bird," and "Green Leaves of Summer." On this best-of compilation, the Brothers play some of their most enduring songs (yes, decades later, they're still touring with these legendary tunes). On "Lemon Tree," they show their balladic skills; on "If I Had a Hammer," they unleash their spirited side. On standards such as "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore," "Tom Dooley," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," the Brothers Four don't pull any punches in their delivery; their singing is a clarion call to restful youth. For a more rambunctious look at the quartet, check out their live Tokyo Tapes double-CD, where medleys and even a few solos will have your toes tapping. Gold, indeed. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Greenfields and Other Gold.......2006-06-27

A wonderful CD. I'm replacing most of my old LP's. Amazon is the best place in the world to find stuff. The Brothers Four make beautiful music with terrific harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Great in an awkward decade.......2006-05-08

This is an album comprising mostly re-recordings of The Brothers Four's hits from the 1960's. According to Bob Haworth (please see his message board on his website for this and more about the album), they recorded it in the late 1970's - so the line-up consisted of Dick Foley, John Paine, Bob Flick and Bob Haworth. In any case, the arrangements on most songs appear to be new, and the overall sound is deeper, richer and mellower than with the original line-up. The emphasis shifts from rhythm to melody, the instruments are handled a bit differently, and the vocals are less wild.

There are treasures here which only come to those who wait. One is Marianne - the lyrics are, of course, absolutely silly to begin with, but what they do with them this time around is amazing. Not to forget that the original members are about 15 years older than when they first recorded this song, and so the asides are more seasoned, and in some ways more humorous. The sound design is fantastic, vividly evoking the glimmering seashore and the surreal people who choose to spend their entire lives in such a place. Another is Tom Dooley: a performance with a lot of texture; nay, culture (if you appreciate early Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt or Carlos Gardel recordings, you'll know what I mean by "culture"). If I Had a Hammer and Michael, Row the Boat Ashore sound stronger and more focused than the originals, and Both Sides Now and Lemon Tree hold some delightful surprises of their own. The John B. Sails sounds to me like a nocturnal voyage under a starry sky, reminds me of Paul Klee's Sindbad the Sailor - another reviewer likened the whole album to one of Van Gogh's "starry night" paintings.

So if you're wondering how time affected both perception and interpretation in The Brothers Four, this album will have much to yield.

A quick afterthought: I recently noticed that some people think of The Brothers Four as a cover band. Such people will find this CD irritating, not least because they "cover" themselves (i.e. Greenfields and Green Leaves of Summer). But those who know that being original in music implies much more than just inventing the lyrics and the chord progressions will be fascinated by what they have accomplished on this album and elsewhere. Besides, these gentlemen have written their own songs, nice ones too.

5 out of 5 stars Easy listening sixties folk quartet.......2003-02-22

These ex-university students were part of the early sixties folk revival, although according the liner notes, they were still performing in 1996 when this collection was compiled, but the line-up had changed somewhat by then. Their one big song was Green fields, an American number two pop hit, which opens this set.

Many of the other songs here are covers, including Walk right in (a 1920's ragtime song which they would have covered after hearing the Rooftop singers), Lemon tree (Peter Paul and Mary), The John B sails (better known as Sloop John B, the title used by the Beach boys), Michael row the boat ashore (Highwaymen), Blowing in the wind, Don't think twice its alright (both Bob Dylan), Tom Dooley (Kingston Trio), This land is your land (Woody Guthrie), Both sides now (written by Joni Mitchell and popularised by Judy Collins), Green green (New Christy Minstrels), Where have all the flowers gone (Pete Seeger) and Lady Greensleeves (a traditional song allegedly written by King Henry VIII around 1580). Another Pete Seeger song here, If I had a hammer, became a hit for both Peter Paul and Mary and Trini Lopez.

The line-up when these tracks were recorded consisted of Bob Flick (upright bass), Mike Kirkland (guitar, banjo), John Paine (guitar) and Richard Foley (guitar). All four sang vocals.

Anybody interested in the early sixties folk revival will enjoy this album, even if many of the songs are familiar.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-07-17

It's the best Brothers Four compilation, both in repertoire and in quality sound.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best!.......2000-05-28

The Brothers Four were my favorite folk group of the 1960s. I have several records and tapes of their original music but this CD is better, if that's at all possible, than the originals. The sound is so deep it almost shocks you back into the '60s. The first song on the CD, Greenfields, is the one most often associated with this fantastic group, and it's done so well it stops you in your tracks. Shenandoah, Green Leaves of Summer, Scotch and Soda, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, and Lady Greensleeves are so mellow and smooth - completely familiar in every way. I don't remember them singing San Francisco Bay Blues (I have that song by Peter, Paul, and Mary and love it, but back then songs were often recorded by several different artists). The Brothers Four rendition of San Francisco Bay Blues is now one of my favorite songs. A wonderful wonderful CD. I loved their music on my scratchy little record player of 35 years ago but I love it more on a high-quality sound system of today. If you were once a Brothers Four fan and wonder where they are today - they can be found in this CD - and you'll feel young again, too!

Album Description

After their adoptive mother is murdered during a grocery story holdup, the Mercer brothers hotheaded Bobby (Mark Walberg), hard-edged Angel (Tyrese Gibson), family man and businessman Jeremiah (Andri Benjamin), and hard rocking Jack (Garrett Hedlund) reunite to take the matter of her death into their own hands. As they track down the killer, they quickly realize that their old ways of doing business have new consequences. In this character-driven action-drama from acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious), four brothers come together to discover that they are bound by ties thicker than blood. The jazzy, orchestral score is by composer David Arnold.

Album Description

While a mainstay on the folk club circuit, the Grammy-nominated Brothers Four put ten albums onto the Billboard charts in the '60s. The group also appeared regularly on the TV shows of Ed Sullivan, Pat Boone, Mitch Miller, and others. Among the sing-along favorites on this "Two for One" CD are the classic folk tunes "If I Had a Hammer," "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "Ole Smokey," and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great folk songs, but greater folk group!.......2006-05-08

Some of the best folk songs brought together on one CD! All of them are brilliantly arranged and performed, so it's difficult to pick a few to talk about. To take Scarlet Ribbons as an example, many singers twist and bend the phrase "and for me some scarlet ribbons" beyond all recognition to wring out the feeling, and you can practically see them sweat as they toil their way through it. Not John Paine. He just sings "some" in a certain way that leaves you wondering where music comes from. Priceless!

5 out of 5 stars Most Listened CD.......2004-10-08

I'm not sure where the previous preview states that "Big Folk Hits" are not the original Brothers Four but having owned the original record album since I was 5 (and still di) I assure you that they are the original 4 guys....although the "Tokyo Tapes" are not( 2 are). Big Folk Hits has been listened more by me than even the Beatles. As owner of 1000's albums, cassettes, and CD's this is my #1 of them all. and the arrangements of songs, though on some other albums, are my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Twofers of The Brothers Four.......2003-04-14

As a child, I remember Columbia records putting out a patrioc album of artits on that label. "Rock Island Line" and "The Driller's Song" were both included. They are both contained here, after many years of searching for them.

It's a bit discouraging why a boxed set has not been released from this tremendous group, which skyrocked to fame with "Greenfields" and "The Green Leaves of Summer." I have since purchased every lp they've put out, and put them on Compact Disc myself. Perhaps one day this will be corrected, but this twofer, combined with the Big Folk Hits is a must have for ANY fan of the great Brothers Four. Don't miss it!!

Perhaps one day we will have "Rally Round", "More Big Folk Hits", "Roamin'", "Let's Get Together", "A New World's Record" and "The Honey Wind Blows" out on CD as well. There is also a Japan only release, in '73 of the Brothers Four in concert. These contain tremendous performances as well.

Given the way CDs go out of print so fast, I'd grab this one. I've given many as gifts to those who have never heard them, and all respond with loving comments, and even order more for themselves. The recordings on these albums will never be topped!!

4 out of 5 stars Great to see this!.......2000-09-17

I grew up with folk music, and one of those old records I still have is "Big Folk Hits". For me, this was the quintessential Brothers Four LP, and I've been waiting for years for it to be available on CD. It has, for me at least, the definitive renditions of "Jamaica Farewell", "Darlin' Corey", and "Scarlet Ribbons", and their "El Paso" rivals Marty Robbins' own performance. First rate!

5 out of 5 stars A Blast From The Past.......2000-08-26

When I was born, my dad drove a city bus in Seattle, so I have heard the music of The Brothers Four all my life. Their harmonizations have had a shaping influence on me, and I eagerly awaited the release of the Big Folk Hits album, so I could share it with my son. To me, theirs is the authoritative "El Paso!" And what would life be without "Tie Me Kangaroo Down?" Paired with "Music Book," this is a superior collection of the Brothers Four sound.

4 out of 5 stars Brothers Four.......2007-05-13

I keep this one in the car for those long commutes...a sing-a-long that sure beats getting frustrated at the traffic. It brings back a lot of memories. Fun!

1 out of 5 stars Brother Four - The Sign of our Times / The Honey Wind Blows.......2006-11-03

I would strongly recommend this item to lovers of Folk Music.
The album is two LP's from the Sixties and reproduced on CD.
Good music will never fade.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs, genuine musicians.......2006-05-08

The quality of The Brothers Four performances is amazingly consistent, and the two albums on this CD, The Brothers Four Sing of Our Times and The Honey Wind Blows, are no exception. In fact, for those who doubt the viability of The Brothers Four as a genuine musical concept (incredibly, one still comes across expressions such as "glee club" in descriptions of their 60's style), a quick tour of this CD's contents will almost certainly remove such doubts.

On the Sing of Our Times album, there is not one song which won't stir your soul, and some will not rest until your body does the rhythm! This album was originally issued in 1964, when the Civil Rights Movement was at its peak, and the choice of songs reflects this mood in an elegant, understated way. Which brings me to this: The Brothers Four never forget to be musicians and never compromise their music. These guys are just as careful about how they express what they express, and their level of artistry, to my mind, surpasses that of other folk groups even when they offer pointed social commentary. The songs on this album were arranged by Milt Okun, a classical pianist who loved folk songs and worked closely with Harry Belafonte; he was also musical director of The Brothers Four for a few years, and this classical influence shows especially in the intricacy of the vocal arrangements. On this album, you'll find one of the most beautiful love songs of all time, performed as only The Brothers Four can when they're totally focused: Seven Daffodils. All four Brothers are superb, but Dick Foley, the lead singer, deserves special mention. This track will prove beyond a doubt that he is blessed with one of the finest voices ever recorded, and that he knows how to use it. His pronunciation is gorgeous! I also enjoy listening to Beans Taste Fine, a humorous song by the legendary Shelby Silverstein, sung so well by Mike Kirkland. (One can only speculate how the group would have evolved had he stayed, but I can certainly understand why so many Brothers Four fans miss him.)

The second album on this CD, The Honey Wind Blows, presents a more eclectic array of songs, from film soundtracks to blues to children's songs. As far as I can tell, there is no outside arranger for the songs on this album, so The Brothers Four are probably on their own here. Not that one notices any dip in quality. The title song alone is worth the price of this entire CD. Wicked of them all to put Cleano right after The Honey Wind Blows, but if this track doesn't part you from whatever blues you're nursing, nothing will! John Paine is fantastic as the little kiddy, and I've seldom heard anything more hilarious; plus you get to hear the most difficult percussion instrument to master (ha!). According to the liner notes, Cleano was partly improvised, so one take was all it took. It does have the air of a live performance; for one thing, you can clearly hear that the guys have a hard time keeping a straight face. Another fun song is Lazy Harry's - the most flamboyant Brother, Bob Flick, really shines here. Now, this guy is truly grand! (To really appreciate the scope of his dramatic flair as well as his intelligence, I'd recommend the two live albums from the 60's, In Person and Cross Country, also on one CD.)

There is a bonus track on this CD, Hootenanny Saturday Night, which is the title song of the Hootenanny TV show that ran from 1963 to 1964 (it seems all guest musicians on the show sang it, and this is The Brothers Four version). Whenever I listen to it, I become absorbed by the banjo playing (that's probably Mike Kirkland) and eagerly await the final bars.

As for the red-blooded approach, never fear: there is plenty of it on this CD. That is, if you don't equate sloppiness, roughness and vulgarity with being "a real folk musician".

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Brothers Four.......2007-07-06

The Brothers Four were popular at the same time the Kingston Trio was big. I felt these guys were just as good and sometimes better. I still have the original LP of these recordings. Years later they appeared at a convention hall and my husband took me to see them perform. I took the LP album with me and after their performance, I asked them to autograph it. It's one of the highlights of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-05-08

The former reviewers have said it: The Brothers Four are simply fantastic! Let me quickly add two things about the debut album which impressed me. First, there are three songs with a slightly foreign flavor: The Zulu Warrior, Angelique-O and Superman. In this politically hypersensitive climate where everyone sees racial/religious/cultural/sexist slurs everywhere and turns to the government to mediate disputes which should be solved human to human, I think it's important to point out that they manage to have fun with cultural diversity while maintaining a gentle, warm and open attitude. No meanness of spirit whatsoever. So if you don't particularly like to hop onto either the bandwagon of false traditionalism or that of false universatism, you'll be delighted by what these guys do. Second, with Banua they really show how urbane and stylish they can be - which is probably why they're not your average folk band. Unique sound, right from the start.

Oh, yes, not to forget: this CD contains the two songs most tightly associated with The Brothers Four - Greenfields and The Green Leaves of Summer.

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic cd.......2000-05-10

I just received this album from Amazon.com and what a surprise. Brothers Four fans will delight in the songs on this double album but the sound quality is what blew me away. Sony has done an outstanding job with this album. You would never believe these songs were originally recorded in the '50s and '60s. It's truly amazing how good these songs sound. A great addition to any B4 fans collection!

5 out of 5 stars 2 Classic Brothers Four albums!.......1999-12-18

This CD is certainly a great one. TWO complete albums, on one CD. Their debut album, and B.M.O.C. The latter I listened to as a child, and have always remembered the songs. What a wonderful treat to have them again, in truly great sound. All the memories will come flooding back when you listen to these remarkable albums, by the equally remarkable Brothers Four. Their vocal harmonies, and instrument mastery, has no equal. Perhaps that is why they are STILL performing.

5 out of 5 stars Music I loved as a child and love as an adult.......1999-08-02

The Brothers Four's debut is one of five albums my sisters and I played over and over and over while I was a kid. Since reaching adulthood, I have been trying to re-acquire these lost treasures. I found The Brothers Four on used vinyl but to have it on CD is amazing. To have my own kids able to hear the four frat brothers is truly a blessing. I know this isn't much of a review, but I tried to make it a proper review -- singling out one song to recommend over others, and I couldn't. I thought about remarking on the banjo work, the infectiious spirit of the music, etc. But to make a long story short, the whole album is phenomenal. And I'm not just saying that because of some nostalgic feeling, since this was among my first exposures to music. As a child you love the music of your parents, then as a teen, you take the popular stuff. Later, you realize how right your parents were. Good music is good music. And The Brothers Four produced especially good music.

5 out of 5 stars Still amazing after 40 years!.......2007-03-12

When I was in elementary school my father bought Rally Round Boys and we played it over and over. Once he became a grandfather he enjoyed singing "The Fox" to all of the grandkids. Well they are now in their 20's and it is one of their strongest and fondest memories of grandpa. I bought this for my 83 year old Dad and the smile on his face was beyond belief. The quality of the recording is perfect and there are 2 of the wonderful Brothers Four albums included. Great sound, great songs, great group and wonderful memories. Thanks for an amazing return to the 1960's.

5 out of 5 stars Two of Their Greatest -- At LAST!!.......2006-08-22

These two early Brothers Four albums are finally making their CD debut. Kudos to CC music for releasing them.

Though many songs have been released on other collections, nothing can really take the place of hearing an album in it's original state. The BF wrote many of the songs on both albums, and they are just as much standouts as the others. It's an absolute amazing feat that these boys were in the studio so often after their initial Columbia signing. Every album they have put out is a gem, including their later offerings.

To put even a standout song on this twofer would be doing the group itself an injustice. Every song is terrific, and in the original sound. Many compilations have had the left and right tracks mixed wrongly, not so here. "Follow the Drinking Gourd" has always been a favorite, but excluded from other CDs. I have both of these lps, and now am most fortunate to have them on CD. I literally cannot stop playing this super twofer.

I only hope their entire Columbia catalog will be released, along with other great albums after. This would get ten stars if I could put it. This group is my personal favorite of all of the "folk" genre of the early and mid '60s. Viva~!

5 out of 5 stars Rally and roam!.......2006-06-07

Just got this CD - terrific! These two early Brothers Four albums show mostly their light and humorous side. They had already released their debut album to wide acclaim and were in great demand across the US, but they retained an unspoiled and irreverent quality. Most of the songs are very well arranged and performed, and some really stand out. One of these gems, for me, is The Fox (admirers of Dick Foley's singing will be blown away); another is Marianne (makes me wonder why I had to be born so late in the century); others are Nine Pound Hammer (incredible sound, makes me want to buy a 14-pound banjo!), Abilene (clever lyrics), Frogg No. 1 (where it all almost began), Pastures of Plenty, My Tani, The Gallant Argosy, Times, Blue Water Line and The Ballad of Sam Hall (yep, Bob Flick is a grand raconteur).

John Paine: "The important thing is for the audience to have as much fun as we do [see liner notes from Rally `Round]." And these Brothers Four albums still sound fresh and engaging after almost half a century.

Many thanks to Collector' Choice for making these wonderful albums available once again, and hopefully they never get the idea to stop.
