A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The surprise here isn't that Andreas Vollenweider has recorded a Christmas CD. The surprise is it took him this long to do it. He's never recorded covers before, but his mixture of fantasy and exotica make him a perfect candidate to score a Yuletide album. At his best, he makes these carols sound like they fell full-blown on his harp. He completely reworks the familiar themes not the way a jazz band might, improvising solos off the main melody, but completely recasting the melody itself. On the best songs, including "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Yorkshire Wassail," he fragments and inverts the tune, often using only the seed of the carol for his explorations. Vollenweider goes beyond the traditional repertoire with songs like "Over the Hills and Over the Vale," an adaptation of the medieval "In Vernale Tempore" that he turns into a chamber music jaunt with recorders, cellos, and percussion. Although he makes meticulously crafted music, it's easy to forget that Vollenweider creates most of his work through improvisation. That is the key to these personal interpretations of Christmas carols on. Longtime but occasional collaborator Carly Simon turns up on several tunes, and--helped by greeting-card instrumental versions of "Carol of the Drums" and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (on which she does not perform)--threatens to push the album into maudlin terrain. That's the nature of the Christmas beast, but despite these lapses, they still don't sabotage the often simple charm of Vollenweider's inventive, nostalgically gilded instrumentals. --John DilibertoAlbum Description
First holiday title from Andreas Vollenweider, one of the world's most popular ambient/new age artists!Customer Reviews:
Latest Andreas Vollenweider CD.......2007-02-13
Very good if you enjoy New Age music. I have been listening to Vollenweider for many years. this CD also has Carly Simon on several numbers.
Any time of year.......2007-02-10
Carly Simon and Andreas have collaberated over many years, and this is the latest one.
Don't be fooled in to thinking though that this is just a Christmas album, because it's certainly not. In fact you can put this on any time of year and it can be played gently in the background to envelope your dinner party guests! The Christmas themes are there, but they are quite subtle (unlike me!).
Andreas plays the harp and if you like to be soothed this will certainly do the trick.
And if you love the timbre of Carly's gorgeous voice, you won't be dissapointed either!

Christmas music from The Land of Whowouldathunkit........2006-12-24
At his website (see the track listing image above for the address), Andreas Vollenweider explains the how and why of a Christmas album from a musician and anti-war proponent who was always more into mysticism than religion. No, he hasn't been baptized but he acknowledges that the underlying spirituality of religion is essential in healing the world's ills and even points to Jesus Christ's Sermon on the Mount as guidance for all of humanity.
The selections and performances are eloquent witness of his convictions: a generous helping of traditional carols, a little Papa Bach and a few original works wrapped up in Vollenweider's trademark electric harp with some Carly Simon vocals. Happily, it sounds like he's kept alive a performance practice that dates back to his earliest works, specifically those lush enveloping bass notes played on the harp at the same time as the melody and harmony.
The titles are better described as inspirations because Vollenweider makes each melody his own. "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" becomes a spirited waltz on the harp that veers pleasantly into jazz club improvisation when the clarinet comes in. "The Little Drummer Boy" emerges as "Carol of the Drum" and "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" features a lesser-known melody, neither the traditional nor the occasionally heard "Forest Green." Other surprises include bouncing "The Coventry Carol" back and forth between Mayan flutes and cool jazz.
"Midnight Clear" is a delight and destined to become for this century what the Ray Conniff Singers and Mannheim Steamroller were in the previous. Even more enchanting are the possibilities it opens for future albums. Dare we hope a few of Handel's harp concertos will someday leap from Vollenweider's magical strings?

There's a commercial inevitability to holiday song collections that can tempt music fans to mutter "humbug" under their breath. Yet while this collection (released in conjunction with the Tenors' Christmas Spectacular tour of 2003) is no less market savvy, in the end the trio's earnest, energetic performances earn their fair shair of respect. The trio's Celtic shadings impart considerable warmth to "Fairytale of New York" and other performances, but it's the range of influences they (also in solo and duet turns, all solidly backed by the Czech National Chamber Orchestra) bring to bear elsewhere that adds compelling new dimensions to these holiday favorites. Anthony Kearns' "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" may be solidly traditional, but Ronan Tynan imparts "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with some deft, jazzy drama while Finbar Wright gives "Mary's Boy Child" an unexpected Carribean spin. Elsewhere, the folk-classical influences behind "We Three Kings," "O Holy Night," and the gospel traditional "How Great Thou Art" span renaissance, baroque, and modern with a grace missing from the on-the-sleeve sentiments of the closing duo of patriotic warhorses--what would the Prince of Peace make of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," anyway? --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

A Christmas Celebration: Kathleen Battle.......2007-01-19
One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22
A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13
Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.
With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.
Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28
Pure Joy.......2003-12-07
I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.
The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.
Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.
This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24
The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09
However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!
A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28
The best.......2004-01-02
How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14
Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.
All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.
Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.
These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-11-29
This album is really a mixture of Christmas tunes and that's partly what makes it interesting. And, of course it is masterfully sung by the King's singers;I enjoy all their discs; especially the recording of Gilbert and Sullivan tunes. Some of the arrangements on this disc are somewhat esoteric, and I'm not too fond of the very STRANGE arrangement (again by Daryl Runswick) of the Coventry Carol, but 'to each his own'. Their opening selection:"Here We Come a-wassailing" (arr. Robert Chilcott) is a great opening number and I must say that it's the best arrangement I have ever heard of this selection.
Let's face it:the KING'S SINGERS are perfection. But don't forget our American group:Chanticleer.

Heaven is here!.......2005-10-26
A Very Mixed Bag.......2003-08-15
Band 12, "The Coventry Carol," the longest cut on the CD, demands special mention: it is downright awful. The annotator of this CD writes cosily, "And of course there are the old traditional English Christmas songs, all mulled wine and mince pies." Nothing could be less descriptive of what we get here, where the misguided, pretentious, weird, grotesquely ugly, far-out dissonant-modern arrangement does its utmost to pervert and spoil this lovely old English carol, twisting and distorting it into something almost unrecognizable; this cut is a real horror. (Sir David Willcocks, the famed King's College choirmaster under whom the King's Singers trained and sang as youths, would be appalled. The man responsible for this travesty, one Daryl Runswick, also arranged two other selections; his consistently tasteless arrangements comprise three of the four worst on the CD.)
The performing forces vary from the a cappella singers to accompaniments with brass ensemble or orchestra. The variable but undistinguished engineering (EMI's Abbey Road studios, 1989)--over-processed, over-bright, hard-edged, and occasionally canned-sounding--is an additional drawback. If you like traditional Christmas music (as I do) you might want to think twice before buying this CD. At least try to listen to it first. Caveat emptor.
Among My Top 10 Christmas Recordings.......2002-12-26
Because the recording is so excellent on the whole, one disappointment stands out: I wish that Coventry Carol had been saved for another recording. The dissonances conjure up distressing images at odds with the overall effect they seem to have been trying to accomplish with the recording, and I can certainly imagine that in another context, I might have been interested and emotionally moved, rather than unsettled and annoyed.
In any case, this has remained for years one of my favorite Christmas recordings, and I have to give it 5 stars.

A "fast spinning" vibrato,as you describe Ms. Price, is not the same as a wide vibrato. The former is a speed issue, the latter a width issue. Therefore, 4 variables exist: fast, slow, wide, slim. Thus, 4 types of voice exist: fast/wide, fast/slim, slow/wide, and slow/slim. Most often a singer leans toward fast/slim or slow/wide, in varying degrees. A matter of taste, yes, but learn more about the voice before you expound.
