Album Description
In pre-Civil War years, Black gospel spirituals often served dual purposes - to assert hope for a better life and to convey coded directions and advice to runaway slaves heading north on the Underground Railroad, a network of sympathizers providing food, shelter and aid. Many of these same songs became anthems of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, their messages of faith and determination stoking freedom marches and rallies. Since 1982, the married folksinging duo of Kim and Reggie Harris has been exploring the rich lore of Underground Railroad stories and songs and their subsequent reuse in more modern contexts. The Harrises' 1997 Appleseed CD, "Steal Away: Songs of the Underground Railroad," was proclaimed "a stunning recording" by Sing Out! magazine and has been embraced as a teaching tool by Underground Railroad and Black history museums, freedom centers, and school systems. On the new "Get On Board!", Kim (vocals) and Reggie (vocals, guitar) present some of the lesser-known Underground Railroad songs they've uncovered, revive several standards from their past recordings and mix in newer compositions "Ballad of the Underground Railroad," co-written by Black history scholar Charles L. Blockson, Cathy Fink's spirited "One Little Step Towards Freedom," and Roberta Slavitt's aching "Freedom is a Constant Struggle." The Harrises' guests on "Get On Board!", spanning ages and genres, include Bernice Johnson Reagon, renowned musician, teacher, activist and founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock; actor Danny Glover; contemporary folk-blues performer Guy Davis; Matt and Marshall Jones of the SNCC Freedom Singers group of the '60s; 14-year-old rapper Jonathan "Baby Jay" Gutierrez; acclaimed folk duos Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and Magpie, and many others.Prominent among the CD's glories is the use of voices - Kim's radiant mezzo-soprano and Reggie's high baritone appear in innumerable harmonic combinations, swooping around each other, slipping in and out of unison, joyfully welcoming the additional vocal textures of their guests. The vibrant arrangements and the fascinating background of the songs, described in the CD's liner notes, make "Get On Board!" an accessible and uplifting documentary of music's role in our country's history.

Album Description
Real railroads haul passengers, freight, and mail. The trains of our music and literature also carry symbols: they can represent freedom and wanderlust, eros, machismo, escape, work, the ultimate journey that marks life's end, or nostalgia for a bygone age. This collection of songs about trains and railroads offers some of each of these, from the turn-of-the-century tale of Casey Jones to the "disappearing railroad blues" of the 1970s' "City of New Orleans." Rounder's Classic Railroad Songs series proudly presents some of the best and most beloved train songs recorded since 1930. Norm Cohen, author of Long Steel Rail: The Railroad in American Folksong shares his extensive knowledge in the booklet notes. Artists: Hank Snow, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Flatt & Scruggs, the Delmore Brothers and Wayne Raney, Steve Goodman, Sleepy LaBeef , Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, the Whitstein Brothers, the Carter Family, Tony Rice, Jim & Jesse, the Stanley Brothers, Mary McCaslin. Also available: Steel Rails: Classic Railroad Songs, V. 1, Rounder 1128.Customer Reviews:
Great songs, mostly in a traditional country style.......2002-10-05
This particular collection is prefominately traditional country, though Sleepy LaBeef provides a rockabilly cover of Mystery train and there are a few bluegrass tracks too.
Johnny Cash (who has recorded many train songs) opens the set with Casey Jones, a song which (like other old songs, especially Frankie and Johnny) exists with different lyrics - if you have other Casey Jones songs, listen carefully and comapare.
Steve Goodman wrote City of New Orleans, and it's good to see his own recording of the song included here. I like Willie Nelson's version best, but that version is easy to find while Steve's is much rarer - and still worth hearing.
Patsy Cline sings a fine version of Life's railway to heaven (not really a train song, but who cares?).
The brilliant but obscure folk-country singer Mary McCaslin sings The Cannonball - a song she wrote herself about the passing of the steam age.
There are so many other great songs here, but I'll not waste your time going through them all - if you have any interest in train songs, just buy this and all the other Rounder train collections.
Another solid collection from Rounder.......2000-07-12
"Mystery Train" makes another appearance on Volume 3, but that's more than forgiveable. I wouldn't mind an entire album of "Mystery Train" versions, a la Rhino's "Louie Louie" album.

Made in recording sessions by Alan Lomaz and Seamus Ennis in 1951, this was one of the first comprehensive surveys of the folk music of Ireland. Lomax and Ennis went from village to town in western Ireland, recording professional and amateur singers and musicians in their homes and community places. The songs are familiar, since so many of them have been learned by more generations via these recordings, and include classics like "I'll Go No More A' Rovin," "Whiskey in the Jar," "The Lark in the Morning," and dozens of others. Aside from Ennis, who contributes a fair number of songs himself, the names of the performers will not be too familiar. It's a straightforward, honest brand of Irish music (not "Celtic") that focuses on the tunes and stories, delivered with quiet grace or raucous joy, untouched by fad. Accordions, fiddles, and piano are the instruments most likely heard here, but the real gems are the solo singers and storytellers, whose voices still ring true because they were so real, so personal. The booklet includes Ennis's original recording notes, a new introduction to put the music in contemporary perspective, and Lomax's original effusive and overromanticized commentary. --Louis GibsonCustomer Reviews:

Even without his highly regarded symphonies, various instrumental works, and monumental and influential work on the revision of the English Hymnal, Vaughan Williams would have made a major impact on 20th-century music with his many original choral works and his folksong arrangements. In fact, Vaughan Williams's folksong-collecting work was one of the more important contributions ever made to English music. This disc offers a wonderful collection of a cappella choral pieces, including some of Vaughan Williams's finest folksong arrangements. Besides "Ca' the yowes," "Full fathom five," "Greensleeves," and "The Turtle Dove," the program includes rarely heard masterpieces such as "Alister McAlpine's Lament," which brilliantly captures the mood of the song with serene, sensual harmonies and gently flowing vocal lines. The Holst Singers seem born to this music, giving us the music's full flavor without ever overplaying it. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

Songs that Never Fade.......2005-11-21
This is a recording to cherish.
Heavenly, introspective, definitely the most soulful songs!.......2003-03-16
Salute to Vaughan Williams for documenting, preserving and arranging these gems of English and Scottish heritage. Holst singers performe splendidly. Their discipline and professionalism, and a sense of artistic direction shine through.
I highly recommend this CD along with John Rutter's "The Lark in the Clear Air" for all the sensitive people who take interest in classical music and traditional folk songs.
I wish I can give this CD 10 stars!

Outstanding collection -- great fun.......2005-12-11
This is not homogenized "children's music." These are adult musicians singing vibrant music to their friends and families about their everyday rural life. The songs are funny, sly, clever, poignant, and boisterous by turns. While volume one is a bit stronger on the whole, some of our favorite tunes are on volume two. Great stuff.

With Norman and Nancy Blake.......2004-08-18
the real Western sound.......2004-03-17
Last of the Troubadours, a two-CD sequel to the earlier two-CD Saddle Songs, will engage any sympathetic listener from beginning to end. Edwards knows a good song, and there are no clunkers here. "Cowboy" in these songs is a literal, unironic job description, not a hip slang phrase for hard-partying Nashville star as in those irritatingly self-congratulatory songs Waylon and Willie cranked out in their heyday.
The point of view is both romantic and autumnal, no more so than in the moving traditional lament "The Campfire Has Gone Out." There are familiar titles -- "The Colorado Trail," "Night Rider's Lament" (the yodeling at the end is a lovely touch), "Barbara Allen," "Utah Carroll" -- along with striking variants of "Diamond Joe" and "The Rancher Feeds Us All" (otherwise "The Farmer Feeds Us All"). He also revives worthy obscurities such as "The Mormon Cowboy" (long a favorite of mine in the classic 1920s recording by Carl Sprague), "Root Hog or Die," "I Wanted to Die in the Desert," and other sturdy frontier ballads.
I guess I would have liked a fuller string-band sound on a few of the selections if only for the sake of variety, though Norman and Nancy Blake make a welcome appearance on a couple of cuts. Still, that's not a critical issue, not when there is so much to like in Edwards's quiet, intimate campfire approach. If you like authentic cowboy tunes performed authentically by a living master, saddle up.
A great Western Troubadour...Don Edwards.......2004-01-28
