If Earth & Sky, the compilation that was Laurie Lewis's Rounder debut, served to showcase her bluegrass roots, Seeing Things finds her breaking new musical ground. To be sure, there's still plenty of fiddle, mandolin, and high lonesome harmonies to be found here, and Lewis's respect for traditional music shines through. But these songs range all over the musical map, from the lilting Norteño swing of "I'll Take Back My Heart" to the sly, bass-driven shuffle of "Kiss Me Before I Die." Tom Russell's haunting "Manzanar" tells the story of Japanese internment during World War II, while Darol Anger grows a "forest of fiddles" (as the liner notes put it) around Lewis's lovely, clear soprano on the traditional "The Blackest Crow." Lewis has always been a hard artist to pigeonhole, gracefully moving between musical genres as different as bluegrass, jazz, gospel, and traditional folk. With Seeing Things, she establishes herself as a powerful, diverse singer/songwriter who deserves a much wider audience. --Mary Park

Album Description
Revelation: 57In some parallel universe, if Molly Ringwald had been cast in the Mad Max movies, Shades Apart would be the perfect soundtrack. Raised in a decade defined by John Hughes movies, bubblegum pop and escalating nuclear arms, the members of Shades Apart shared a passion for bands from the first wave of punk's invasion (energetic lads like the Jam, the Police, Generation X, and the Clash). Shades Apart's new record, Seeing Things, taps these sources to deliver a modern fusion of pop, punk and new wave. The single from their previous record, a uranium-fueled cover of the synth classic "Tainted Love", received loads of commercial radio airplay last year and eventually turned up on MTV. Not bad for three suburban-bred New Jersey-ites who started playing for something to do during summer vacations.
Shades Apart released their debut album in December 1988 on Wishingwell Records, a chiefly straight-edge hardcore label based in California. Two EPs followed: Dude Danger on Sunspot Records and Neon on Skene Records, which caught the ear of Descendents leader Bill Stevenson. Shades Apart jumped at the chance to work with their proto-punk icon, and Mr. Stevenson (along with bandmate Stephen Egerton) became the producer of their next LP. 1995's Save It was the product of that union. The band found a new home on Revelation Records and toured North America several times in the next year, converting legions of new fans and garnering critical praise along the way.
Seeing Things is the newest release, again brought to us by the production team of Stevenson/Egerton and again on Revelation Records. Whereas Save It was a 200 beat-per-minute articulation of pent-up anger and frustration, Seeing Things is not quite so fast and furious. The band maintains an overriding power and genuine emotion, but there's also a more melodic edge, reminiscent of writers like Joe Jackson or Squeeze. "We heard a difference between today's songwriting and the songs we grew up listening to," explains vocalist/guitarist Mark. "We wanted to write stuff of that caliber, but rev up the energy level".
Loaded with poppy, introspective hits for the proverbial Thinking Man (and Woman), Seeing Things is no lite fare. It's a record of personal searching and realization in the postmodern era, with a snappy beat you can dance to.

A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24
As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.
Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.
I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.
Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23
The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.
The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Displaying a rare discipline, Zorn eschews the jump-cut frenzy that typified The Big Gundown to showcase his cool mastery of conventional blues, rock, jazz, samba and most every pop flavor imaginable. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
The beginning of Zorn's long soundtrack career........2006-02-06
The results are actually, given Zorn's place at the time, remarkably mainstream in their sound. Mind you, this isn't exactly Top 40, but it's a lot less frantic or dense as much of his early work. Expertly performed by some of the best musicians New York City had to offer-- Robert Quine, Bill Frisell, Scott Dresser, Bobby Previte, Wayne Horvitz, David Shea, the list goes on-- Zorn coaxes together a stew that accepts all his musical interests. At it's best, the performances are exciting and diverse (the hardcore punk of the "Main Title" from "White and Lazy", smokey, deep groove guitar jazz on "Seduction", the inexplicable "Theme" from "The Golden Boat" are all good examples), quite frankly at it's worst, the pieces on here are a bit too backgroundish, nothing is really bad. Morricone's infuence sits pretty heavy here, but it is uniquely Zorn.
I tend to find myself preferring Zorn's more recent soundtrack work, where he's shed the Morricone sound and really come into his own, but this is certainly an intriguing and powerful record. Recommended.

Product Description
They accept the idea that every heart is haunted, and there's nothing any one of us can do about it. They know that hope, happiness, melancholy and despair are equally poisonous when undiluted by truth. They see the stage as a secular altar to which they and an audience attempt to resurrect the dead (Charlie Patton, Hank Williams, Eric Dolphy, Pop Staples, The Carter Family, Memphis Minnie, etc.). It's inevitable that their ears are tuned to these electrical ghosts. Their hometown was the home base for Link Wray and Marvin Gaye; their streets the birthplace of Go-Go. A Spoils of NW show at The Black Cat, DC9 or the Mercury Lounge will make anyone who hears ghosts feel better about another night alone--or together--with them. Peter was in The High-Back Chairs, The Peter Hayes Condition and Pussy Galore. Bill was in Pteradactyl, and is the guitar player in his sons' band, Eyeball Skeleton. Joel was in the Revelers. Phil was in Tuscadero.
