2 out of 5 stars Good artist, very lame compilation.......2007-01-12

This CD is in--I kid you not--REVERSE chronological order. Why would anyone want to listen to an artist's career in reverse chronological order? It is the stupidest decision I've seen in awhile with regard to a compilation CD (and that's saying something, since we all know how stupidly so many compilations are made!). In fact, the CD actually opens with a 2002 remix of on of Jansch's songs, which adds electronic drums and tries to make the song danceable or something. Horrible. I usually research an artist's catalog pretty thoroughly before I decide what album by them to buy first, but I'm struggling to remember why in the world I bought this CD instead of The Best Of Bert Jansch. In addition to correcting the aforementioned flaws of this CD, The Best Of Bert Jansch includes 4 more songs, and is actually a few dollars cheaper. The cover photo is cooler, too. Don't make the same mistake I made, go for The Best Of Bert Jansch or the out-of-print Dazzling Stranger: Anthology instead of this.

Album Description

Bert Jansch, who is one of the most influential figures in contemporary British folk music, brought an unsurpassed combination of virtuosity and eclecticism to the acoustic guitar, both as a solo artist and as a member of Pentangle. A talented songwriter and affecting vocalist, Jansch wrote sparse and dark material that recalled the folky side of Donovan, although Bert Jansch was less pop-oriented than the psychedelic pop troubadour. Bert Jansch's influence was not only immense in the British folk scene; it also extended to the rock world. Both Jimmy Page and Neil Young have acknowledged Bert Jansch as a major influence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Crimson Moon is one of the most beautiful unknown songs ever written.......2007-06-15

Bert Jansch is among those extraordinary artists who are popularly unknown, but technically accomplished far beyond popular comprehension. In addition, Jansch's body of work is beautiful and memorable, but few can cover his songs as well as him for its technical precision is demanding and Janc's execution is effortless and simultaneously unapproachable. Jansch works in the oldest tradition of a troubadour singer-songwriter.

This collection is an excellent introduction to Jansch's work, and for those who've never heard it, I suggest listening to "Crimson Moon" if you want to be hooked.

These re-masters are crystal clear and welcome new pressings of beloved songs.
