Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Cannibal Ox is the latest brainchild of Company Flow's El-P, whose lumbering, aggro-electro production on this album is as unique as a signature. Down-tempo and discordant, the beats sound like trip-hop gone to heaven and hell--some songs, like "A B-Boy's Alpha," have an almost angelic feel to them even as El-P soils his tracks with grit and grime. Others, like "Raspberry Fields," are chaos forced into unstable order--snaking synthesizer whines struggle to break free, rhythm sections run amok. This is a taste of the apocalypse turned aural. The music of The Cold Vein is so distinctive that, for a moment, you might forget that Vast and Vordul are actually rhyming on it, which is paying El-P a compliment rather than dismissing the two MCs. Vast's commanding baritone stands out in sharp distinction to his partner's, as his deliberate flow punctuates every line. It's hard to categorize what they speak on, as their songs mix the surreal and abstract with street-level commentary. But they're definitely taking reality rap on one helluva acid trip. --Oliver Wang

this album ranks up there with "Enter the Wu Tang (36 chambers)","Liquid Swords", "Illmatic", and the rest of the top hip hop albums of all times. it is a pioneering and masterful work of lyricism and production. El-P's producing is incredible. him and the Rza are my favorite producers. anyway, buy buy buy! you wont regret it!

5 out of 5 stars The Cold Vein.......2007-01-05

For true Hip-Hop enthusiasts this is a must have like virtually all of the Def Jux releases. Hip-Hop's not dead...it changed before our very eyes, it's rap that is dead, hopefully that is.

5 out of 5 stars futuristic post appocalyptic emcees reign the wasteland.......2006-07-25

When I first saw this CD in my local record store, I was dazzled by the cover, depicting some kind of drawn characters amidst a blue background. I was compelled to purchase it due to my feelings that this CD had something to offer me. I gleefully purchased the disc and when I got open opened it up to find a cracked CD. My heart sank and I immediatly returned to the store and put in an order to replace it. I had to wait a few days, but when I first popped this CD into my player, it turned out to be worth the wait. At first, I was not really into the lyrics. The beats had me hooked in an instant. But soon the album grew upon me and devoured me whole. The lyrics are abstract yet rugged and hardcore at the same time and its completely original.
My all time favorite hip hop is the futuristic, fantasy, adventure hip hop that involves futuristic settings, space travel, aliens, robots, sci-fi beats, comic book references, warlocks, wizards, conspiracy theory, controlling governments etc...Cold vein falls into this catagory, even though the two emcees that spit on the album don't always flow about things of that nature, they sometimes throw in references of such things, and overall have a tight lyrical delivery. El-P's production and beats are stellar and beyond what is defined as hip hop. The cover art is all blue and it defines the overall feel of this album, a kind of blue haze envolopes the vibe of each song yet still infused with classic hip hop flavor and finesse. A must have for hip hop heads and future hip hop heads alike. Up there with Deltron 3030

4 out of 5 stars The Cold Vein.......2006-06-26

The first time I heard Cannibal Ox was last winter in my friends snowboard video. He did the intro over the first and in my opinion BEST track on the CD Iron Galaxy. Basically that got me interested in the group and I later found out that they were correlated with one of my favorite groups ever Company Flow.

I copped their CD, but waited a really long time to listen to it. It's pretty futuristic, kind of abstract like Deltron 3030 (another one of my favs), while the lyrical content is nowhere near Deltron (hell, what is?) it is very good. I mean obviously you should expect to hear a LOT of Co-Flow when you listen to this, so if you're not a fan it might not be the best idea to pick this one up. The CD has some very good songs A B-Boys Alpha, Atom, and another one of my favorites, The Battle For Asgard. However I think some songs on here tanked the whole album. For one- a couple of the tracks on the CD are weakly produced, Stress Rap & Painkillers. And a couple tracks seems like they just sorted started thinking of words that rhymed in the studio and went with that, Vein & Real Earth.

Basically this CD is 80% genius, so 4 stars is what it gets-and to be honest I'd like to just give it 3.5 because I feel they coulda done a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC.......2006-05-09

I've owned this album since it first hit and have waited too long to write a review. Cannibal Ox is one of the best duos in hip hop history. But I was playing their album for some friends who were in the scene and they had never heard of them. So, this review is for eveyone that might not have much exposure to the underground hip hop world and so I will compare Can Ox with more popular artists.

Vordul's flow is like nothing you have heard before. Imagine mixing GZA and Ghostface from Wu-Tang Clan with Nas and you are coming close to his flow. Add to this lyrics that are smart (like good Common) but also clever (like good Jay Z). Vordul is amazing and I highly recommend his solo album and his songs on the Dreddy Kruger album.

Good duos (Dre & Snoop, Cypress Hill, Black Star) all have differences between the members: Can Ox has taken this idea and perfected it. Vast Aire has a flow that is not opposite Vordul's but is certainly very different. If you imagine a smart Bizarre (from D-12, I know its hard), Big Pun, and Notorious B.I.G. flow and mixed it with old Xzibit you would come close to Vast Aire's flow. He plays with words like no other rapper ever has and the rhymes are smooth and yet out of the ordinary. "So secure with your insecurity, Perfect world of piety, I swat flies when they bother me."

The production is break out. They truly transformed hip hop and have not been matched by any other album. There is no comparison to the beats: but take Pete Rock, throw in RZA, the bump of Dre, and you might have something close.

Buy this album now if you do not have it. If you dig it, I recommend Vordul's solo work and Vast's stuff too (but get Vordul's first). There is a new Ox album coming soon and if it is half as good as this album, it will certainly be a classic.

The best three tracks are: 1. Painkillers, 2. the F word, 3. Atom.

Don't judge this splendid disc by its silly title. Jean-Yves Thibaudet has put together an imaginatively programmed and gorgeously played Erik Satie recital that is certain to acquire reference status alongside the classic Satie recordings by Aldo Ciccolini, his one-time mentor. The difference lies in Decca's far superior sonics, and Thibaudet's warmer, more robust piano sonority. He imbues the music with subtle dynamic gradations and varied articulations that keep Satie's sparse textures vibrant and fresh, without any of the posturing and willfully slow tempi favored by several Satie specialists. Thibaudet cleverly separates the three famous Gymnopédies and intersperses them between brooding works like the Gnossiennes, upbeat, dry-witted selections ("Jack in the Box" and "La Belle Excentrique," along with some fascinating world premieres). And it's refreshing to hear the cabaret song "Je Te Veux" so seamlessly phrased, as if vocal chords had temporarily replaced the piano's hammers. Simply a joy. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Great take on Satie.......2007-01-05

I spent a lot of time listening to sound clips to decide which Satie CD to buy. Some of the other ones I listened to had too much background noise or were too mechanical. I love the eb and flow that Thibaudet adds to the piano music. It is gorgeous!

3 out of 5 stars I may be too harsh but this was a disappointment.......2005-08-30

I purchased this CD to replace a favorite tape that had worn out of nearly the same collection of Satie pieces. The music is great but Thibaudet plays it without the upbeat enthusiasm that makes the music magic. Sorry, Thibaudet.

5 out of 5 stars Quite... simply...a joy!.......2003-01-09

Extraordinary, eloquent, intimate and impassioned performances. Each time I listen, I get taken deeper into Satie, yes, but also into *music* itself. Satie's music is really meant for the performer (note his comments on the score), intimately.

I also think Satie used it as map & vehicle rather than as destination. (I used to refer to - and prefer - Aldo Ciccolini while reading the score. Thibaudet has provided a whole new landscape to fit the map.)

Although Satie said his music should be performed "so that no-one listens to it," I think he was actually trying to get to us in the same way that admonishing someone to not think about elephants has the opposite effect.

Thibaudet's interpretations are a joy to listen to, to pay attention to. (And I thought I knew Satie...!) Whether taken as seriously as a mating dance, or as playful as one, there is a profound sense of intimacy here.

If your impression of Satie is that he wrote "furniture music" long before Muzak - sounds to provide a background while you eat or chat or have drinks, or shop at Nordstroms - then this recording may reawaken you. Thiba breathes new life into Satie, new levels: it seems to take one into deeper realms of consciousness, toward thoughtless contemplation.

(And I learned that "'Gnossienne' refers to the 'Crane Dance' performed in the labyrinth of the palace of Knossos [Gnossos] in ancient Crete." ...Now, is that provocative?)

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best..........2002-12-25

This album offers both first time recordings and a high quality, warm sound that may help you to feel Satie's free-from-tricks music. As it says in the booklet, you don't need to be a virtuoso to play Satie but you have to understand the certian state of mind. The Magic of Satie is probably the best choice for both old and new Satie listeners.

5 out of 5 stars A new standard for Satie.......2002-12-25

Like many others, I discovered the music of Satie upon hearing the recordings of Aldo Ciccolini. As mentioned by Distler above, Thibaudet studied with Ciccolini although they apparently never worked on Satie's music together. No matter. This is a wonderfully recorded and played selection of Satie's music. Satie's music is unique- he is one of those musicians who seemed determined to not sound like anybody else. At least, that I know of. In spite of that, he is one of the most accessible of modern composers because of his melodicism.
I have listened to many performers play some of these pieces and Thibaudet is the best I have heard since Ciccolini. The only thing that keeps me from recommending this CD without reservation is that Thibaudet plans to release a box set in the near future that will contain all of Satie's piano music. If you are an obsessed completist like myself that is something to really look forward to.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional sound and knowing interpretation.......2006-03-01

Jose Serebrier assisted Stokowski in their days with the American Symphony Orchestra, the memory and motivation for the coductor to record his mentor's version of "Pictures At An Exhibition" in up to date 21st century sound, coupled with a number of other Stoki specialties.

Aside from the more Russian sounding "Pictures", what I enjoyed most here were "Night on Bald Mountain", the "Khovanshchina" conglomeration and the symphonic synthesis on "Boris Godunov". This adds up to about 40 minutes of exciting Russian music delivered with gusto in great sound.

The Bournemouth Symphony hardly play like understated Englishmen in this recording, which will tear a hole in your speaker or knock some dishes off the shelves if you aren't careful with your volume or subwoofer controls when you first play this thing.

This 5.0 SACD is the real thing right from the first few notes of "Night On Bald Mountain" that begin the program. On my 5.1 surround sound system it about knocked down the walls of my house. It brings new definition to the term "demonstration recording"!

Not long ago I wrote a review of Stoki's last remaining CD of his version of "Pictures At An Exhibition" in his own orchestration and scoring. Stoki dropped two of the French paintings and made everything else sound Russian by emphasizing low strings and deemphasizing brilliant brass. Serebrier carried the memory of his mentor's work forward in this recroding, which is destined to wind up on some "best sounding CD of the year" lists.

4 out of 5 stars Pictures, as a Revelation.......2005-11-12

This recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition" came on the radio today as I was waking up. I had not heard the Stokowski orchestration before (is it true that the principal clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra was his ghost orchestrator?) and it was a revelation. The tried-and-true Ravel instrumentation will never be replaced, but this is a "Pictures" from a distinctly different corner of the hall, and a welcome departure. Serebrier and Bournemouth perform with exemplary precision and freshness, digging in where Stokowski's excesses can withstand some enthusiastic wrangling. If you love this Mussorgsky and want to hear it with new ears, here's your chance.

4 out of 5 stars Only for DJs is right........2006-03-20

But how many instrumental CDs can you think of that aren't targeted towards DJs? You are the one who bought this CD without realizing that instrumentals can become repitive and old very, very quickly. There are a LOT of good beats on this CD, and if you could get it any vinyl you could probably rip some really good music. But the fact stands this CD is an instrumental and that most people who like El-P (Which stands for El-Producto) and Cannibal Ox for their lyrical abilities should NOT buy this CD. So if your a non-DJ or really only find yourself appreciating hip-hop lyrics do NOT buy this CD just to give it a crappy review.

4 out of 5 stars yes, this cd is dope.......2004-10-12

First off, completely disregard the reviewer that stated that this cd is not complete. That guy got his 76% refund and spent it on either the new nelly cd or a male prostitute. If you don't like this cd than you don't like hip hop, and that's a fact. Really good drum beats + really good use of samples= really good hip hop. Its as simple as that. Expect some experimental psycadelic outerspace type samples that flow mad well. Listen to this cd a few times and you will surely agree.

1 out of 5 stars Only For DJ's.......2004-09-24

This album offers too little to be sold as a stand alone CD to the general public. It was underwhelming, so I returned mine for 76% credit so I could get something else

5 out of 5 stars Oxtastic.......2003-02-27

El-P has got this "hardcore/sci-fi" thing down to a fine art. The Cold Vein minus the lyrics (i.e. "Oxtrumentals") is definitely a 5-star album. Being a campus DJ, I often find myself talking over these beats, freestylin' over these beats and even just enjoying them on their own. For the most part, El-p doesn't just create one bar and loop it 128 times per song. Each track goes beyond average hip hop convention.

If you put "Shaft" and "Star Wars" together into one movie, "Oxtrumentals" would be the O.S.T.

5 out of 5 stars A classic in it's own right........2002-04-07

The lyrics on Cold Vein were thorough, but on Oxrtumentals the beats prove that they have of life their own. This cd is street mixed with fantasy like a cyborg pidgeon. This is a good cd to listen to while drawing or doing any kind of creative work.
Oxtrumentals is definently a collectors piece.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

Little that's come out of the rock underground since the alternative revolution has been of a distinctly sensual nature. Indie rockers dance around romantic entanglement, but seldom cut in. That's the case with this "Red Hot" compilation, which doesn't mean much of it doesn't have it's own pitiable appeal. A case in point is the album's opener, Freedom Cruise's "Sensational Gravity Boy," a characteristically tuneful and verbose Guided by Voices number that finds the new rock darlings working in tandem with the Breeders' Kim and Kelley Deal. Shayne Carter, ex of Straitjacket Fits, teams up with New Zealand countrymen the Verlaines on "Some Fantasy." Lois Maffeo and Rebecca Gates team on "Sotto Voice," one song that is baldly sexual, though no one's going to get it mixed up with "Let's Get it On." Two interesting one-man bands, Stephen Merritt (here billed as Future Bible Heroes) and F.M. Cornog (East River Pipe) come up with album highlights-a catchy updating of techno pop and a understated elegy for Kurt Cobain, respectively. --Steven Stolder

This is one of of those CD's that I got out of the bargain bin - which I frequently do just to look for something new and caught the Jay Farrar/Kelly Willis duet on the back of the jacket. That alone was worth the 4 bucks in my book. Anyway - wasn't expecting too much and have been pleasantly blown away by what I found. Would highly encourage anyone who's even thinking of buying it to do so - you won't be disappointed. Highlights for me were tracks - 2, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, & 17 though not necessarily in that order. Much depends on my mood. Oh yeah - have never heard guitars like the ones on the Verlaines track - just and outstanding raucous celebration. Like standing on a pile of dead rock stars....

5 out of 5 stars Excelent!!! The Who s' Bass Player best colection of songs!!.......2005-10-28

John Entwistle is part of a number of great musicians and authors relegated to remain under the shadow of other very talented member of his band. That club is called: "the quiet ones" and among its members are George Harrison (the Beatles), Dave Davies (the Kinks), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones), Jack Bruce (Cream), Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips & Steve Hackett (Genesis), Chick Churchill (Ten Years After), Greg Rolie (Santana), the late Tom Fogerty (Credence Clearwater Revival)and many many others. This is an excelent place to start to know his solo music and includes songs from all his solo cds to date including the little unknown "Flash Fearless" cd and even 3 new songs with Keith Moon on it. Still some excelent solo songs are missing, particularly from "Wistle Rymes" his best solo cd ever and maybe the best cd ever recorded from a member of the Who. Also there are no songs from his concerts with Ringo Starr (see Ringo s cds), his cd with Steve Hackett (Wind and the Willows), his recordings with the Strawbs guitar player Steve Lambert and other live recordings. Even with that this is an excelent colection of songs from The Who s bass player and one of rock masters.

3 out of 5 stars grab bag of thunder.......2005-05-26

John Entwistle is my biggest musical influence, as a bass player and musician. As a song-writer he is wry and deadpan, at times musically and lyrically brilliant, but with an equal amount of just plain awful songs. This collection is worth "Bogeyman", alone. "Bogeyman", "I Wonder", and much on disc 1 are solid. It is the mid-to-late 80s and 90s work that someone needed to talk John Entwistle out of.

I have seen him and his solo bands many times and realize his desire for heavy-metal/hollywood-hair band music styles, but hearing the results are painful, embarrassing, and, I hope, forgettable.

This could be a 5-star rating if it was a complimentary cull from his writing with The Who: "905", "You", "When I Was a Boy", "I've Been Away" are all fantastic examples of Entwistle compositions. I guess he needed the wisdom of Daltrey, Townshend, and Moon to temper and hone his songs to greater brilliance. Competing egos tend to have a positive influence on your own inability to view yourself with clear eyes. I will caveat that by also saying I believe there is nothing a solo Beatle did, with any consistency, that holds a candle to the combined effort of The Beatles.

Grab Entwistle's Whistle Rhymes album. That is an Entwistle solo album of track-to-track brilliance. Short of that, pick and choose all his songs written with The Who and some nuggets from his solo work and then you will discover a gifted, wry musician - make sure it includes "When I Was a Boy".

5 out of 5 stars The OX gets double pressed..........2005-04-12

While his first two solo albums are untouchable, John's other works are also of great merit and value (yet, sadly, they are at times either overlooked or misunderstood). But here, on this wonderful anthology, you will find a little bit of everything, for everybody.

For those unfamiliar with the OX, here is a terrific place to start...

Two CDs, housed in a slipcase, with excellent liner notes and pictures, what more could you ask for? Personally, I love the live cuts. Not just because they sound great, but also because they are vintage in recording, circa 1975. The live version of 'Whiskey Man' alone is worth buying this set.

For true Entwistle fans, this was a long time coming, even if we just sit around and skip through our favorites.

    Rest in peace, John.

    We'll all be listening.

    Album Description

The debut OX: DUST BOWL REVIVAL (to be released December, 2002) is a collection of studio weary fragments, fragile masterpieces, sonic accidents; a candid album in the truest sense. Recorded live to analog tape and spliced cassette demo recordings made across the mid-west, DUST BOWL REVIVAL is literally, a record of a record; a behind the scenes look at recording an album.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Homage..........2003-04-11

I've just written (and deleted) around 500 words explaining how and why Ox is a man people should be forced to listen to. However, I've decided that it was all a little unnecessary and all that really needs to be said is that the man is a genius. His lyrics are insightful, humourous, rediculous, and heart-breaking. 'Carolinah' is quite simply one of the most beautiful songs ever written, 'LA City' will have you singing along way after the cd has finished. 'North Country Girl', a sad, yet strangely uplifting ode to lost love, the song of the album. Talking about his 'old turntable' he says in a tired voice, "where the needle has broke off/ God only knows". Metaphors aside, Dust Bowl Revival is an incredible album. It makes you smile ('Stolen Bike') breaks your heart ('Oh Eileen', 'Carolinah') and makes you want to jump into the nearest car, wind the windows down - and just drive ('Blue Morning', 'LA City').

Buy this album, you will not regret it. It's like discovering Wilco all over again.

This is not your grandfather's klezmer music. sounds from the middle east, northern Africa, and even gypsy are entwined with authentic yiddish music. The title song, Ver Tanzt? (who's dancing)is an original composition that is sung with such raw emotion, you'll wonder if peace will ever come to Palestine and Israel. If you want a new experience in music - buy this!
