A colleague of Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) and his Magic Band produced some of the most eccentric music of the late 1960s--or, for that matter, ever. The high water mark of Beefheart's bizarre career, this double album of freeform "Dada rock" features such daunting tracks as "Pachuco Cadaver," "Hair Pie (Bakes 1 and 2)," and "Neon Meat Dream of an Octafish," all of which actually sound as unusual as their titles. Between Beefheart's mind-bending lyrics and cavernous voice, as well as the twisted playing of guitarists Zoot Horn Rollo and Antennae Jimmy Semens, bassist Rockette Morton and drummer The Mascara Snake, this album fully explains the expression "far out." --Billy AltmanAlbum Description
Given total creative control by producer and friend Frank Zappa, Beefheart and his Magic Band rehearsed the material for this 1969 album for over a year, wedding minimalistic R&B, blues, and garage rock to free jazz and avant-garde experimentalism. Warner Brothers Records.Customer Reviews:
Masterpiece.......2007-07-02
Don't be afraid, but Trout Mask Replica is not an easy listening. True, I think all of the music has some melody or something musical, but to the people who like music with only a simple melody and follows a simple verse-chorus, will not like this. It sounds like a joke at first, but it's very good at times, at least to me. IT should grow on you, if it dosen't, it dosen't mean you ignorant or stupid. Some just don't, but don't give up on it the first try. Some of the best albums took more than one listen to love for me.
I can't garauntee you'll enjoy this, it's like other wacked-out musical ______ ups like Mr. Bungle and Gorguts' Obscura, but it's awesome to me at least.
Once again, it's not easy listening. Try it...if you...want to risk wasting 15 dollars.

In terms of tone and cultural significance it is the aural equivalent of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I listened to it in front of the Antiques Roadshow with the sound off, a bag of lemon bon bons and a shonky spiff and here's something I don't mind telling you music lover ... it were a proper treat ... "When Big Joan comes out her arms are too small, her head like a ball, she tied off her horse and galloped off into the moonbeams, she pulled up her blouse and compared her navel to the moon ..." I don't know who she is but my geography teacher was called Joan so I like to think it's about her.

Usually when you read that an album is "inspired by" a motion picture or TV show, you can be certain that the one thing those artists were inspired by was a big fat check, and consequently those records generally do not sound very good. But the debut collaboration between no-longer-underground hip-hop artists Dangermouse and MF Doom, allegedly inspired by the Cartoon Network's late-night stoner-centric animation series Adult Swim, is far better than it has any right being. Doom has one of the best flows around, and he's at least as smart as your favorite dictionary-digger. Danger Mouse's obscure samples are excellent, but this is just a fun record that's not trying to be more, or less. Character voices get worked in, and these are pretty cool, especially Shakey's send-up of the fake answering machine cliché. There're also guest appearances by Ghostface Killah, Cee-Lo, and Talib Kweli. When it comes to rappers hanging with cartoon characters, Mouse and the Mask is more fun than a Shaq attack and a Gorillaz record combined. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
Two of this generation's most respected hip-hop artists, Danger Mouse and MF Doom have come together for this album, inspired by Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's popular late-night animation network. Doom, with his near obsession with masked identities and superhero personas, and Mouse, with his murky, ethereal soundscapes that cloud men's minds like Mandrake, are the perfect partners for the project, and each has inspired the other to the finest work of their careers. "The Mouse & The Mask" contains character voices and skits from Adult Swim's most popular original shows, including "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Sealab 2021", and "Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law", along with guest appearances by Cee-Lo, Talib Kweli, and Ghostface Killah.Customer Reviews:

[adult swim]'s Commercialization (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2006-12-04
The Danger Doom album "The Mouse And The Mask" was good to listen to. Most of MF Doom's rhymes are good to listen to (a better move over that "Madvillany" album if you ask me). His flow was consistant throughout this album. Danger Doom's production is good too. This was the first time I hear his production, and it was very impressive.
What I like most about this album is the cameos by the cartoon characters themselves. Master Shake appears on a few tracks leaving voice mail messages cussing out Danger Mouse for not letting him rhyme. Meatwad and Brak spits a few rhymes on this album. There are more cartoon cameos throughout this album too.
Guest appearances are few. Ghostface Killah appears on "The Mask" which is good. Cee-Lo sings the hook to "Benzi Box". And my favorite track is "Old School" with Talib Kweli, is perfect.
The problem I have with this album is the length. The album clocks in at about 37 minutes, making it seem kind of short. Also the songs are short in length too, averaging about 2 and a half minutes, not hearing enough Doom.
Other than that, this album is recommended to fans of [adult swim] who haven't purchased this album, or fans of both MF Doom and Danger Mouse. There are no filler tracks here. Just head nodding music. Enjoy.

Danger Mouse really shines on this album, making every track completely fresh and funky. MF Doom even grew on me, though, among my favorites would have to be Old School, with Talib Kweli, and Benzi Box, with Cee-Lo. However, the whole album is spectacular really. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the bleeping of profanity. I feel that the content on the album is more adult oriented, as is the subject matter from which it took its inspiration, and as such, I feel that the bleeping was unnecessary.
Great album, though, Doom, Danger, and all the others really took me by surprise, and it ended up that this album was far better than expected.

McKennitt's travels through Spain and Morocco flavor this album with a distinctly Mediterranean tinge, from the opening "The Mystic's Dream," with its dancing percussion arrangements, to "Marrakesh Night Market," to "Full Circle" and the instrumental "Santiago." "Marrakesh Night Market" is an especially strong performance, with an interesting musical texture; the balalaika, udu drum, and dumbek are played alongside a synthesizer. As usual, McKennitt has set a poem to music, this time Yeats's "The Two Trees," with a lovely introduction on the Uillean pipes. There's also "The Bonny Swans," a traditional lyric, and the CD closes with Shakespeare, as McKennitt sets some of Prospero's words from The Tempest to her own music. Excerpts from McKennitt's journals, included in the CD booklet, make for interesting reading as they shed some light on her source material and inspiration for writing each song. --Genevieve WilliamsAmazon.com
Loreena McKennitt drew her inspiration for this album from 15th century Spain, where the cultures of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam coexisted uneasily, tied together by a common tradition of religious mysticism. McKennitt reflects the multi-culturalism in arrangements that mix the half-tone intervals and familiar instruments of the Aryan north with the quarter-tone intervals and dumbeg, oud, and tamboura of the Semitic south. The results are often intoxicating, even if the composer consistently prefers slow-moving tempos. There's a tension and density to this music that safely removes it from the new- age category. McKennitt's attempts to evoke medieval mysticism in her lyrics are less successful. She fares best when she draws her texts from other sources: Prospero's closing speech from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Yeats's "The Two Trees," "The Dark Night of the Soul" by the medieval Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross, and the traditional narrative ballad, "The Bonny Swans." One these numbers, the shadowy, mesmerizing atmospheres conjured up by McKennitt's music are enhanced by the words rather than spoiled by them. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Another "Must-Have" by Loreena McKennitt.......2007-06-16
Perhaps because of the careful attention put into them (they seem to be no closer than 2-3 years apart), perhaps it's because OF this distance, when one is "waiting for another", I don't know. What I DO know is that there is NOT ONE of this musician's albums unworthy of shelf space in your collection.
Always mystical, haunting, light, lovely, ethereal...the list could go on!
Everyone at least owes themselves a "good" listen to her at least a couple of times even if they end up not purchasing her albums. She is, to me, somebody you would live without ever knowing she or her output existed, but once listened to, she is someone you want "near" to you and your heart, thus the necessity to own these shiny little discs of her works!
As all her releases, this is a "composed through" album, a homogeneous set. As I've stated before, perhaps this is why her music stays with you in your mind long after hearing it, but I am not sure. All I know is that her voice, her music, and the orchestrations of it, will go right through you to your heart......there are few artists who can do this. Lucky for us, she is here, now, and we benefit greatly from her work(s).
Again, pick up this album, take it home, grab some cookies and a cup of Earl Gray, turn down the lights, or off completely, and let the music here wash over you and repair you from your day. ~operabruin

Don't expect to find the aural sequel to James Horner's epic score to Titanic on The Mask of Zorro. On Zorro, Horner flavors his orchestrations with flamenco, lets some instruments have their solo turns, and goes for a distinct Latin flavoring on most tracks. In the theater it's a rare treat--the composer bridges the gap between the Zorro of long ago and the prerequisite sweeping orchestrations of today's cinema. A variety of influences--everything from his work on Willow to the frenzied stomping of Michael Flatley--seemingly creep into the work. Unfortunately, the vocals of Marc Anthony and Tina Arena on "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" (Zorro's equivalent to "My Heart Will Go On") stick out like a sore Anglo thumb amid the rest of this fine score. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Worthy, but somehow, the spark just isn't there.......2007-07-04
Actually, Christine McVie has to carry most of the burden of this album (and does so very well, in truth, as in "Save Me" and "Skies The Limit"). It's important to understand, when considering Stevie Nicks' work here, that at the time she was really screwed up by Klonopin, which had been prescribed to her in the first place as a measure to help combat her former cocaine addiction, but which, in turn, she ended up getting hooked on. Stevie herself has said on numerous occasions since breaking Klonopin's hold that, in her opinion, that drug was actually worse for her than cocaine, because at least cocaine didn't interfere with her creative processes. Whatever the case, she doesn't have, unfortunately, any really memorable songs on "Behind The Mask" - which is more the pity when compared to her terrific work the previous year (1989) on "The Other Side of the Mirror") (Side A of the LP is still, IMHO, one of the best slabs of Stevie music I've ever heard). None of her songs here quite measure up, again IMHO, to "Rooms On Fire" or "Whole Lotta Trouble".
Best.Mac for the Ninenties.......2007-02-08
Fleetwood Mac's Most Underrated Album..........2006-11-21
Although not up to previous efforts chart-wise in the US (peaking at #16) and containing no hit singles, "Behind the Mask" was a massive hit in Europe and the UK (peaking at #1), and deservedly so, as the album is a much stonger effort than any album the band released in the the 80s.
Christine McVie gives some of her best contributions to a Mac album ever, with "Skies the Limit" and the best track on the album, the title track "Behind the Mask". Compared with the lackluster efforts on 'Tango in the Night', Stevie Nicks picks up her game in a big way, with the haunting "Freedom" and the oh-so-sweet "Affairs of the Heart". Rick is excellent with his ample guitar work, and Billy comes in strong with the standout "In the Back of My Mind" and the ballad "Hard Feelings".
If you like Fleetwood Mac, this album will not disapoint, and despite certain reviews, it is every bit as good as an album like "Mirage" or "Tango in the Night", and perhaps even better.
A superb album that, sadly is overlooked.......2006-10-26
Off the bat we get the prototypical Christine McVie song in Skies The Limit. It's a great tune that I've always loved. Track 2 is the Vito/Nicks duet Love Is Dangerous. Great guitar work in this song. Billy Burnette's In The Back Of My Mind is next and while I feel the opening is a bit over the top and overproduced, it's really a great song. Do You Know is a nice followup to a pretty heavy song. Burnette and McVie really work well together and this song shows it. Save Me is next and it's another typical Christine McVie song (not a bad thing by the way.) Nicks' Affairs Of The Heart... I'll just be kind in saying if it were left off the album, I wouldn't have been disappointed.
The next six songs of Behind The Mask are among my favorites. When The Sun Goes Down is proof of the kind of songs that Burnette and Vito can do when they are allowed to do what they do best. Certain folks may not like this song because it doesn't sound like "Fleetwood Mac" (aka the Rumours lineup) but this is exactly what this incarnation of the band needed. Behind The Mask may be Miss McVie's darkest song. It's a different kind of tune for her, but it's a great one. Stand On The Rock is a song that has had a hard time grabbing the affection of even the most diehard fans, I really love it. The next song, Hard Feelings, is perhaps Billy Burnette's shining moment on the album. It's definitely my favorite track of his with Fleetwood Mac. Without a shadow of a doubt, Freedom is the best Stevie Nicks song. She did some great vocals, but Rick Vito laid down some excellent guitar licks. When It Comes To Love is the second Burnette/McVie duet and it's a great song. The final track is The Second Time and suffice to say it's horrible. Never has Stevie Nicks sounded more dull or lifeless. I won't throw the song itself under the bus because I think if Miss McVie did it, it would have turned out okay. But it's a bad way to round out a great album.
If you're a fan who loves listening exclusively to the Rumours era of Fleetwood Mac, this album is not for you. If you're a fan who is interested in hearing another chapter in Fleetwood Mac's history, do not avoid this album.
+1/2, A real mixed bag.......2006-10-25
Returning from the massive success of TANGO IN THE NIGHT's "Little Lies" and "Everywhere," Christine McVie and husband/co-writer Eddy Quintela return with two more irresistible pop confections. Both the album opener, the unabashedly optimistic "Skies the Limit" (#10 Adult Contemporary, #40 Mainstream Rock), and the soft arena rock of the hit "Save Me" (#33 Pop, #6 Adult Contemporary, #3 Mainstream Rock) are expertly-written compositions that perfectly represent the opposing sides of McVie's material. I think they would have been even more effective with edgier arrangements, but, even so, both songs work extremely well. The moody title track, Christine's only solo contribution on this disc, is a brilliantly pained composition that allows the usually straightforward McVie to take a rare trip to the dark side. It's the freshest, most daring and abstract track here, and is further sweetened by a welcome guest appearance of Lindsey Buckingham's unmistakable guitar-playing.
Stevie Nicks had shocked fans everywhere with the surprisingly weak and lackluster compositions she contributed to 1987's TANGO IN THE NIGHT. On a more positive note, her 1989 solo album THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR had contained about four songs that were as great as anything else she had ever written, but the rest of that disc, unfortunately, had been given over to musically undistinguished and banal material. Fortunately, the four songs she contributes here are a marked improvement, even if her numbers sometimes fall victim to the sterile production. Nicks' only solo composition, the gorgeous mid-tempo love song "Affair of the Heart," is possibly the singer's most affecting number since 1985's "Has Anyone Written Anything For You." Nicks' track with frequent collaborator Michael Campbell, the rocker "Freedom," is agreeably energetic, but would have worked better with an arrangement that had more of a kick. Nicks also collaborates with then-new member Rick Vito on two tracks of mixed quality. The delicate ballad "The Second Time" actually benefits from Ladanyi's generic production, while the up-tempo "Love Is Dangerous" (#7 Mainstream Rock) is hampered by it. This track just never seems rock as hard as it should.
The tunes submitted by Vito and Burnette confirm that neither man had found his niche in the band yet, which is understandable considering it is their first outing with the group. They certainly try on a wide range of styles. In addition to his collaborations with Nicks, Vitto contributes the decent rocker "Stand on the Rock" (although, again, the production should have had more bite), while Burnette delivers a respectable attempt at avant garde with "In the Back of My Mind" (although it's too cluttered and uninspired to really hit the bull's-eye). Vitto and Burnette join forces on the credible rockabilly tune "When the Sun Goes Down," which is the best contribution from either man (maybe they should've worked together more often). The album is at it's absolute worst on the three banal ballads co-penned by Burnette. The tacky "Hard Feelings" (co-written with Jeff Silbar) is a by-the-numbers Phil Collins knock-off, while "When It Comes To Love" (written with Dennis Morgan and Simon Climie) and "Do You Know" (co-penned by Christine McVie, who should have known better) are hackneyed and gooey, Halmark-ready rubbish that could have been churned out by Diane Warren.
A mixed bag with some great moments and some dreadful ones, BEHIND THE MASK is a near miss if there ever was one. There are a number of good songs present, but many are camouflaged under the pedestrian production. Had the band scrapped Ladanyi and his "lite FM" arrangements in favor of a rawer, less glossy sound, then the disc might have been great. I wish that this lineup of the group had stayed together and recorded another album, as their follow up album might have really hit the spot. As is, the disc showcases the group progressively venturing into the band oblivion. After listening to this album it is clear that without the driving vision of a singular genius, whether Peter Green or Lindsey Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac sounds like any other band.

The Blue Mask.......2007-05-29
The Blue Mask was released in 1982, this is at least 15 years into his career of making amazing music. After the death of his long time idol and mentor Delmore Schwartz who he studied under Reed decided to dedicate an album to him. That album turned out to be The Blue Mask, incidently this happens to be Reeds most mature and thought out album. With lyrics more thoughtful then ever before and much more personal then ever before or since if that is even possible.
To this day, and even on the day of the albums release The Blue Mask is hailed by fans and critics alike as one of if not Lou Reeds all time greatest achievement as a solo artist. While this is one of his better solo records and sure as hell can rival some of his work with The Velvet Underground, The Blue Mask is not Reeds greatest triumph as a solo artist that would go to either New York or Berlin.
However songs like 'The Day John Kennedy Died' and 'Underneath The Bottle' are easily to the best songs ever written. Rockers like 'Average Guy' and the albums closer 'Heavenly Arms' so a different side of Reed that was never shown before, Reed always boasted about confidence and cool and being self-reliant, these songs so fear, and longing for a connection a weaker, yet, more mature Reed, one that wasnt in the 1970's.
As a whole, The Blue Mask is the most solid and concistant album Lou Reed ever recorded solo, and is in a league of its own. The Blue Mask is yet another Lou Reed solo album that is far superior to that of Transformer but will never get the recognition it deserves because of the hit single on Transformer, oh well as long as the real music fans know the truth.
You Know It's Worth 5.......2006-11-14

He Found his Pride Underneath the Bottle.......2006-05-29
The best of Lou's middle phase!.......2006-03-18
The title cut is a sonic triumph focused on sadomasochistic themes, "Take the blue mask down from my face and stick me in the eye. I get a thrill from punishment, I've always been that way." Other highly personal compositions also work well both musically and lyrically. Underneath the Bottle is a song documenting the trials and consequences of alcholol abuse (Lou sings, "I've got bruises on my legs from I can't remember when..."). Waves of Fear is another hard riffing song that captures paranoid stress and confusion. It evokes a midnight breakdown after ingesting too much and too many things. The sinister "The Gun" brings us into the mind of a gun toting criminal: "The man has a gun and he knows how to use it. 6mm Browning, let's see what he can do." The song goes on to tell us just what the man is up to.
Now if all these sound morbid and challenging, well, they are. But the Blue Mask is much more. These songs are juxtaposed with compositions that express incredible passion and empathy. My favorite of these is "The Day John Kennedy Died," which showcases Lou as a highly reflective and socially engaged songwriter.
The Blue Mask is certainly a challenging and thought provoking album that is not easily forgotten once heard. If you want to go beyond the popular Lou Reed songs and his most recent more accessible work, this album is for you. Be prepared and enjoy!
Good, But Way Over-Rated.......2005-04-25
BLUE MASK is just another good Lou Reed album, nothing special.

Skittish people beware.......2006-05-08
An Interesting Progression.......2005-04-05
I almost like this album better than it's predecessor if only for the simple fact that it shows that Bauhaus were capable of changing style on the listener without straying too far from genre in aesthetic. This holds true my belief that there is a "Bauhaus for Every Situation"(TM) behold:
You've got "In The Flat Field" if you're looking for some textbook goth/post punk fun. "Mask" is the album for when you're looking for fun, and, although you meant to pull out your Madness album and accidentally grabbed this instead, it can still serve the same purpose (uh..kind of..).
In conclusion, "Mask" is good. It's different and that's what makes it great. Although "Mask" isn't going to make your average purist goth-wanker very happy, just remember that no one cares what purist goth-wankers think anyway.

Try to imagine for just a fraction of a second a world in which you would hear the actual song "Mask" on the radio, and you'll see what I mean. Not gonna happen. It's much too full of eldritch noises and dark intellectual musing to get any airplay.
"Mask" is a personal favorite of mine; but if you're looking for the names that get bandied around more, check out "Passion of Lovers" and that pleasantly hostile paean to spiritual growth, "Kick in the Eye." Important to song cross-referencing, a favored pastime for Bauhaus and for Peter Murphy solo, is "The Man with X-Ray Eyes," which is the lyrical basis for the later "Departure."
