2 out of 5 stars Not again........2007-03-03

Well, the labels did it again. First, when they released the album "Dream" on cd. Their biggest hit from that album "You never done it like that" turned out to be a re-recorded version on the cd release.
They did it again with this "Ultimate Collection." That being said, I love some of their other hits, especially "The way that I want to touch you." Luckily, the rest of the tracks are the originals. If you're looking for the original version of "You never done it like that", you would have to get the 20th Century Masters collection of theirs.

I really like the cd. There are songs I don't remember them singing but all in all it is very good.

5 out of 5 stars There's No Pleasure Like A Guilty Pleasure.......2005-05-15

Isn't there anything simply screams guilty pleasure like the Captain & Tennille? I mean, their cheesy yet infectious hits meant back in the 1970s' you were on a one way ticket to lameville. Well, 30 years later, the world is more accepting to the Captain & Tennille, so now me and many others feel comfortable saying how much we enjoy their music.

"Ultimate Collection: The Complete Hits" is the most complete representation of the duo's hits you could possibly find. Indeed, most of us will be happy to hear songs like "Love Will Keep Us Together", "Muskrat Love" and "Do That To Me One More Time". And diehards who went and bought the actual albums rather than just singles will be happy to learn that forgotten radio staples like "Circles", "Song Of Joy" and "Wedding Song (There Is Love)". Contrary to one reviewer's critique on the album, the sound is excellent. Everything sounds splendid.

This is a must have album, but only if you're a fan. This duo certainly isn't for everyone, but people who like this type of music will pick this up immediately

5 out of 5 stars Definitive collection.......2005-04-27

This couple never made much impact in the UK but had several huge hits in America, where Love will keep us together topped the charts. This particular compilation contains all the tracks from their original greatest hits album from 1977 but also includes all their later hits including Do that to me one more time (their second American number one, which became their only UK top ten hit) and You never done it like that, an American top ten hit that briefly made the lower placings in the UK charts.

Among the earlier American hits here are Muskrat love (also recorded by the group America), Shop around (a cover of a Miracles song from the early sixties), Love will keep us together (their first American number one, written by Neil Sedaka) and Lonely night angel face (also written by Neil Sedaka). Circles, Can't stop dancing, Come in from the rain, We never really say goodbye and Disney girls are also wonderful, as are the covers of Wedding song (Petula Clark) and I write the songs (Barry Manilow).

If you enjoy the music of the Carpenters you will probably also enjoy Captain and Tennille's music. This is the best compilation of their music. Now, if only some record label will re-issue the original albums on CD - but that may be wishful thinking.

3 out of 5 stars Scratching The Surface.......2005-01-26

This collection of Capt & Tennille tracks shows for me how diverse the group's recordings were. Generally speaking, their recordings fell into one of several categories. They sold heavily with the Beach Boys-Neil Sadaka-Alan O'Day singles. These were accompanied by poppish tracks like "Can't Stop Dancing" and "I'm On My Way." The duo interspersed love songs ("Come In From The Rain") and odes to the carnal joys of marriage ("Gentle Stranger" and "Do That To Me") with school-chorus favorites ("I Write The Songs," "Circles") and novelties ("Broddy Bounce" and "Muskrat Love"). In their last three albums released in the US, they included slightly darker Adult Contemporary fare like "Love On A Shoestring" and "This Is Not The First Time." Despite the wide array of recording styles, I am of the belief-- probably heresy to fans-- that Toni Tennille never realized her potential.

In interviews during the 70s, Daryl Dragon made the observation that Tennille's musical tastes were extremely conservative. This inclination hobbled her gifts. She had difficulty recognizing what her voice was best suited for. The upbeat pop tunes the group favored were too insubstantial to support the incredible power of her voice. She either had to reign in her delivery or her projection blew out the bounds of these compositions. Dragon's playful approach-- Erasure-on-Venice-Beach-- didn't always support the earthy smolder of his wife's drawling diction, even if this approach did match the pop sensibility of the singles. In her solo ventures, Tennille's preference for Swing standards had her admirably fronting orchestral sections for live takes, but the wall of sound in the big-band arrangements competes with rather than supports her voice.

Tennille's voice was its own wall of sound. Her singing fared best with simple arrangements. Backed by a piano, or Hammond organ with bass and drums, or seasoned with brass flourishes: these organic sounds gave her the room to breathe that she needed. The material for her pipes was not upbeat ditties but bluesy, torchy songs like "Your Good Thing," "Never Make A Move Too Soon," "Since I Fell For You," "Love Me Like A Baby." Her timbre called out for a lyric of heartache, anger, betrayal, unrequited desire. She was, I think, a soul singer who didn't realize it. Her delivery was best informed not by Sarah Vaughn or Bobby Short but Ann Peebles or Dorothy Morrison. Capt & Tennille might have done better to looks less at California and Hawaii than at Memphis and Atlanta for the most fruitful sources of material. Dragon, a gifted keyboardist, didn't need sound gimmicks to provide the Charles Earland style soul backing that would have put Tennille's voice in its best setting.

Listening to their non-single album tracks, I can't help but wonder what heights they could reach if they tried their hand at covering not pop songs but soul songs. Their proven ability to pull off Isaac Hayes and even out-and-out dance in the smoldering "How Can You Be So Cold" suggest a southern soul outing would be an artistically successful change of pace.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Has all the right songs on it.......2007-03-12

I really enjoyed this cd because it has all of their great songs on it unlike their greatest hits album.
This is a must have for any collector of 70's music.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic trip back to the 70s........2007-01-12

That unique, synthesized sound with Ton Tennille's marvelous voice make this a nostalgic treat for fans of 70s pop. True, a lot of the lyrics are corny or downright inane (Muskrat Love), but it's a very pleasant collection of tender and/or happy tunes.

5 out of 5 stars All the best!.......2005-10-29

The sound on this disc is wonderful! A better buy than Captain & Tennille's Greatest Hits because it includes songs recorded later in this duo's career (e.g., "Do That To Me One More Time" and "You Never Done It Like That").

Get over your fear of muskrats and check out the incredible musicianship that is Captain & Tennille!

Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Perfect record to own when you want to clear out the party.......2005-10-19

I have never been drunk enough to listen to this all the way through, but I have made everybody hit the door, even when there was liquor left, by putting on "Muskrat Love."

Perfect for the thrifty college guy that wants to keep a few beers for tomorrow, or has already hooked up for the evening and wants the dorm room to himself.

4 out of 5 stars They never really say goodbye..........2005-06-27

I had no idea this collection was out until I ran across it in a music store today. I kept waiting for A&M Records to release a "20th Century Masters" CD on them, since they had already done so for other A&M artists like Rita Coolidge and The Carpenters. Although all of the songs on this compilation are available on the "Ultimate Collection" CD, this still makes for a nice, budget-line selection. This CD could be called "True Greatest Hits" as it nicely includes all seven of their Top 10 pop hits, along with additional adult-contemporary hits and fan favorites like "Come In From The Rain" and "Circles". Now....just waiting for their other A&M albums to be represented on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Box Of "Joy" From C&T.......2007-03-24

Captain & Tennille were the top husband-wife MOR pop duo of the mid-to-late 1970s,spawing massive smash hits like the #1s "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Do That To Me One More Time" and the Top Tenners "Lonely Nights(Angel Face)","The Way I Want Touch You","Shop Around","You Never Done It Like That"and the love-it-or-hate-it "Muskrat Love".There have been many complilations in recent years, but their albums (save"LWKUT"and"SOJ")have been out of print-until now. Each of the 6 album's original Daryl Dragon master tapes have been brillantly remastered by Robert Vosgien and Don Murray on CD,making them more lush and sweet than ever on great album tracks like "Cuddle Up","Mind Your Love","Honey Come Love Me","Happier Than The Morning Sun","Easy Evil","Back To The Island"and"Baby You Still Got It",as well as the AC radio faves "Circles","Song Of Joy","I'm On My Way","You Need A Woman Tonight","Wedding Song(There Is Love)"and the goofy yet fun disco cover Of "Happy Together".The CD inserts include notes by Toni Tennille(you get to know the REAL meaning of "Do That To Me One More Time"-not as risque as I thought)and pictures of 45s,memorabilla and,of course,C&T.The only drawback is the lack of unreleased bonus tracks, but that's nitpicking. So forget about this "guilty pleasure" nonsense-this music will give you nothing but musical pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-02-14

The Captain and Tennille were the first concert I ever went to (CA Mid-State Fair, 1977), and they have remained among my favorite groups ever since. I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said by the other reviewers, but numbers count, so here is my take:

THE GROUP - C&T are wonderful musicians. Toni's voice fills the room with sonorant beauty and is capable of great subtlety and great passion. Daryl's arrangements run the entire gamut of musical genre, and are wildly energetic when needed, as well as tender and subtle when appropriate. Any musician will take note of his arranging, playing and producing skills, but his instrumentation never takes center stage away from Toni's amazing vocals.

One thing I love about this couple is their "geek" factor. They are not afraid to sing about happy things. "Love is Spreading All Over the World" is a prime example of a great song with a positive message - yes, a little bit "Up with People," but also just great music. There's a tendency for me to think that anything I loved as a teenager isn't as sophisticated as my current tastes, but C&T are different. They exude innocence and positivity, but with a great deal of musical sophistication - just as refreshing to listen to today as they were exciting to listen to 30 years ago.

THE COLLECTION - Wow! I have never heard better mastering on a collection of material. I have had their Greatest Hits CD for years. An A-B comparison of "Come In From The Rain" from the Greatest Hits CD and this collection is no contest. So far I've just listened through my Harman Kardon computer speakers, but the stereo imaging on the new song, and the lush EQ, and presence, are dramatically improved. In fact the sound quality is so excellent that it actually draws attention to itself. This is one amazing release.

THE PROS - The sound quality, the first 3 albums, C&T themselves, the comprehensiveness of the collection, the honest and self-effacing booklet notes written by Toni

THE CONS - I haven't really warmed up to the two later albums, "Make Your Move" and "Keeping Our Love Warm". Also, many of the synth sounds are fairly dated. The box design is weird, with the album cover art on the sleeves, rather than the CD booklets, and the back cover of every booklet is an ad for the DVD.

THE END - The world needs more of Captain and Tennille. Do your part. GET THIS COLLECTION!

5 out of 5 stars Songs of Joy :: The Complete C&T Collection..........2007-01-05

I had this set as a Christmas gift, and I'm loving it. What a boon, to find music of this quality at this stage of the game, it almost makes me glad they passed me by back in the day.

Toni Tennille's vocals, and Daryl Dragon's keyboard work are superb. This set is choc full o' gorgeous tunes that leave you in a Musical Valhalla of sorts...

5 out of 5 stars Captain & Tennille - The Best.......2007-01-04

I loved every song on the collection. Toni Tennille has a great voice.

5 out of 5 stars Go ahead and laugh, but..........2006-03-13

...you must admit: C&T had some really NICE stuff. Sure, the first album is a little scattershot (No, Broddy. DON'T speak.), but by album #2, the sound had been found. "Mind Your Love" remains the perfect track to turn non-believers into apostles. "D Keyboard Blues" rocks. And "Happy Together (A Fantasy)" makes me giggle every time. The remastering works wonders. How wonderful to have all six albums available in one attractive set! Interesting liner notes by La Tennille, to boot. Buy this.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Man Who's Gotten Everything !.......2007-07-03

Captain Sensible (diamond geezer, one of the best, blah blah), is in an admirably unique position.
For a start, his musical legacy is actually rather good. He produces sharp, warm little pop tunes at the drop of a beret, that DO stand up to close scrutiny . If you (like me) have a deep and profound understanding of everything to do with pop music, you'll spot very quickly that the trick here is to take him completely seriously.
This achieved, you can then begin to position him in pop's hierarchy, and of course start making sage pronouncements that he's better than Springsteen, solo Weller and Robbie Williams. Not really that startling when you think about it. Listen to `Martha the Mouth' and name me one song from the over-rated trinity aforementioned (yeay!) that's better than it. Cant do it can you? Don't worry, you've just challenged `absolute rock truths' number273, and triumphed easily. Feel good? Come on in, the waters fine.
Secondly he has a priceless punk pedigree as a guitar player in those evil masters of dark, dry- ice inhaling, satanic, manic, violent disorder (etc) the Damned! Gasp!
Think what you will, they were there first and deserve some respect for that, erm...and that's about all. Better than Chelsea....maybe.
Best of all in my opinion, is the fact he seems to have some sort of cod-philosophy, which he expounds slivers of every now and again, without ever having any intention (or intellectual ability!) of revealing its, obviously deeply subversive, ideology. This is absolutely brilliant! Imagine Madonna having-something-interesting-to-say-to-her-fans, or deadly serious rock kids NOT falling sound asleep every time Bono opens his mouth. You're imagining a bigger, brighter world.
He's embraced the pop deity, sold his soul to the fun-demon, and he's writing things like `And now the time has come to say, farewell dad and your baked-beans, and the tv set, that I blew.' in a song about selling out (the punk rockers' perennial dilemma) and moving to America! This, of course, aint NEVER gonna happen, but why he's not a bigger star mystifies me. Why has he not replaced Richard Madeley or Gordon Ramsey? Why don't we see him, mad as a badger, EVERY DAY!? Think how much better our kids would turn out, watch the crime figures plummet!
`And rice doesn't burn, in a Japanese urn, it's reality!' Is it just me? This stuff is terrific! Leaves you with a smile, and who, in this decade of total pop miserablism, is gonna knock that?
Madly looking forward to the dream duet of Sensible and that other neglected genius; John Shuttleworth. Seriously.

Where is ONE CHRISTMAS CATALOG!!!!! One Christmas Catalog is the best Captian Sensible songs out there and I heard it in a clothing store last Christmas. It should be on this cd and Happy Talk should be deleted.

5 out of 5 stars Captain Sensible.......2005-09-30

I purchased this album as a mistake as it was the wrong "Captain" group. Best mistake I've made for quite a while. What a cracker. If you're a baby boomer like me and long for the music that rekindles your best times get this one. If there's a weak track I'd like to know which one it is.

3 out of 5 stars Category of it's own.......2005-08-04

Captain sensible is inspired in his own english pop world.Happy, funny, absurd, ironic and melodic songs. Some are good some are bad,but still essential for the 80's.Listen to the sublime and divine"Glad It's all over"over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars WE WILL TAKE IT, BABY!.......2004-04-15

Yeah, OK, it's not complete but.... with an artist as prolific as Captain Sensible, how could one disc ever hope to capture all of his incredibly exceptional output? there's NO WAY! The Capt'n was so sly in his ability to write a pure pop song and make it sound dangerous (with D. Vanian) or innocuous/affecting in his solo ventures. It's just unbelievable that his cover of "Relax (Don't Do It)" wasn't included! I play that on my turntable at parties in Palm Desert and the reaction is, to say the least, enthusiastic. The movie dialogue from "Coma" is especially cool, nobody can ever place it, yet this is a song that will dwell in obscurity forever it seems. Finally, I must say that these A&M songs were being held captive FOR YEARS by his former American label, and they were EXTREMELY reluctant to let go of them, for whatever reason. Legal eagles always seem to get in the way of art. But the scarcity of these songs make this disc all the more essential. The fact that they are reissued at last on CD is a pure revelation and those that have even a passing knowledge of The Damned should take advantage. And, the choice producer Tony Mansfield (the first to capture Ray's pop sensibility and expand on it!) should get credit as well for an incredible ear. I have bought no less than 11 copies of this CD for close friends and every single one of them have been overwhelmed by the Captain cornucopia on display, and the dividend pays overwhelming rewards. Ignore that awful Cleopatra "best of" comp at all costs. In my opinion, this comes closest to capturing Sir Burns' spirit, verve and intrepid endeavors. Cheers to the Captain and his incredible creative output during the 1980's - Dude, you're immortal. Too bad Rat couldn't take the heat.

4 out of 5 stars Good Old-Fashioned Punk.......2005-09-09

Awwww, the memories. Growing up as a School-Kid in dismal London back in the 70's '999' were always my favorite punk band. More fun & less serious than some of their contemporaries (i.e.: Clash/Sex Pistols/Stiff Little Fingers) and certainly less precious than the admittedly brilliant 'Jam'. The songs were short, loud with a good healthy sing-along chorus. 'Emergency' was always their best known track but I think their most punkish songs (is that good English) are 'Nasty Nasty' & the speed-riff 'No Pity', I love trying to sing along the lyrics on that one (Not out loud of course). Although I could never quite get away from the fact that Nick Cash sounded a bit too much like Noddy Holder of 'Slade' on some tracks. Just check out 'Homicide' and see what I mean. All their good stuff is here of course and it's the legit original recordings too (unlike the rip-off CD 'Emergency' which I bought by mistake a while back). If you like good old fashioned punk with a pinch of fun and plenty of energy then pick this puppy up. This is the real old-school of the Punk Day's

4 out of 5 stars THESE OLD GEEZERS ROCK HARD !!!!!!!.......2005-08-23

INDEED ! 1996 compilation of all the early singles of this criminally underrated and vastly imitated (think Olga of Toy Dolls meets Peter And The Test Tube Babies) coz these dudes came first. They already were a pub rock band in 76,and jumped on the 77 punk wagon without loosing their rock'n roll edge.Fun/punk/rock'nroll/pub rock, the energy present in these bass driven, razor sharp, incredibly loud dual guitar songs is unbelievable, and so is the excellent sound I honestly did'nt expect from recordings this old.The last 3 songs flirt with reggae in typical 80's fashion but they work for me.Another outstanding release by Captain Oi !

5 out of 5 stars Impact of 82.......2007-03-12

The Most Brutal sounding UK82 band in existence ever. Mau Maus were beyond great and Fantastic. Society's Rejects and Secret Society are prime examples of the fury delivered with each chorus and riff. The band left behind 25 songs unmatched in it's might. This band totally influenced the genre called Death Metal,to come years later. Get this Cd while you still can....

3 out of 5 stars GOOD HARDCORE !.......2005-08-26

This is a weird hybrid between early american HC influences (Circle Jerks come to mind) and typical UK 82 style massive singalong choruses and tribal drumming. The result is harsh, fast and heavy;recording is very good resulting in a very pleasant listening (if not musical) experience.Outstanding drumming job.Does not get metally at the end as other reviewer stated but the last 4 tracks are a melodic oriented rock'n roll ep that's a shock to listen to after 21 tracks of blistering sonic mayhem.47 'that include their entire discography, singles and a complete lp;most of the early songs are short 1 min. bursts of energy.I can perfectly live without this cd but now I've coughed up the cash I don't regret it either.FOR CURIOUS PUNK ROCK HISTORIANS AND COLLECTORS ONLY !
