Debut from underrated band.......2006-06-28
Christian New Wave?.......2005-11-17
This CD "Into the Son" is the best of the band's three releases primarily because of the beautiful voice of young lead singer Davia Vallesillo. Davia left the band shortly after this CD was released. She has a beautiful voice and sings passionately especially in the song "Grey Clouds".
Rather than placing the focus on Davia's voice, Peter King pursued his interests in the style of music that caught his ear which is fine. He probably enjoyed every moment of it. But I would rather have heard a few more gentle ballads sung by that beautiful voice of Davia.

"The Definitive Recording".......2004-04-02
The voices of the London Cast are, to a man (and woman) far superior -- this is most obvious when listening to the Quartet who open the show, and act as the chorus. The American artists, while excellent, simply can't compare to the power, range and tone of the Brits.
The arrangements are gorgeous, the choral work astounding, and the version of "The Miller's Son" found here will floor you. Not only the best recording of this particular show, but possibly the best recording of any Sondheim show available on CD -- Sweeney Todd is the only other contender, for my money.
The Orginal Cast Recording is great for a historical value. The British Cast is what you listen to when you want to hear the best show you'll never have the privilege of seeing. It's ruined me. But I'm not complaining.
Sondheim's Greatest.......2003-07-10
Having said that, I conclude that the perfect cast album could only be completed with the physical presences of Desiree Armfelt and Fredrik Egerman and the rest of the gang. It seems that, when approaching these personalities, actors and actresses treat the music as the music and not as a phase of the dialogue--they don't attack the parts with the brand of boldness and self-importance that each of these characters possesses. The London cast album suffers from such problems. None of the performers have the arrogant voices needed (unfortunately, only a couple have achieved voices somewhat-worthy of the score). Henrik cannot hit the high notes (he goes into falsetto); Charlotte is too shaky to be sufficiently biting; Fredrik seems too feminine; the Count--goofy instead of condescending--seems molded from Sesame Street. The quintet features voices too uneducated and careful. Still, Anne is cutely bubbly (even in voice), Petra is a fine belter, and Hermione Gingold as Mme. Armfelt really makes the listener savor every consonant in her speech. It is an excellent archive of Sondheim's greatest. I would recommend this over the New York cast simply because Jean Simmons creates the closest Desiree I could ever imagine.
Not comparable to the broadway recording.......2002-09-03
A wonderful CD release.......2002-02-15
A few of my favorite songs on this album is the wonderfully light and fast paced, elegant little romp of "A Weekend In The Country," and "The Glamorous Life" (which has always been my favorite song from the production, with a much better Fredricka then the origianl).
In conclusion, this recording should certainly be bought by "A Little Night Music" fans, and especially Stephen Sondheim,in the words of another reviewer, who's lyrics are the real star,
a beautiful recording.......2001-12-19
Ms Simmons is quite affecting as the flighty and insecure Desiree who feels she is ready to pursue romance after years of broken promises and false hopes.
Gingold, now qute comfortable and honed in her role; performs the comical and contemplative "Liasons" wonderfully.
Stephen Sondheim's most complex and multi-faceted score is given a grand treatment here. Almost certainly this is Sondheim's most interesting and most beguiling score which runs the entire gamut of emotions.
A must for all true musical theater fans.

Product Description
Among the many composers who have drawn inspiration from the music of Indonesia, the one whose outlook became most pervaded by the structrue of gamelan music may be Barbara Benary (b. 1946), co-founder and guiding spirit of New York's Gamelan Son of Lion. A quiet, self-effacing presence on the New York music scene for almost four decades now, Benary has maintained a low profile, but behind the scenes she is well connected. A child of Manhattan's conceptualist movement, she was the designated violinist of early minimalism, a pioneer in American gamelan, and an early example of an increasingly frequent type, the enthnomusicologist-turned-composer. Chances are you've never heard her music on compact disc before this, but New York's Downtown scene has regarded her highly for a long time. Hers is a spiritual music, and the spirituality resides in the universality of her lines, unviersal because they are simple, particular to no one culture. Like Harrison and Virgil Thomson, Benary has a faith in the power of music's most basic elements, which she knits into intricate patterns before letting them unravel again. The title Aural Shoehorning (1997) refers to the listener's tendency to confront unusual tunig systems, such as those of Javanese gamelan, by trying to "shoehorn" them into the framework of our familiar diatonic scales. Heterophony is the overall theme of the piece, and the various ways in which a gamelan and a diatonic ensemble of clarinet/bass clainet and keyboard percussion can interact as a mixed marriage in which neither partner attempts to convert the other. Barang 1 & 2 are solo and duo explorations of a Javanese pentatonic mode called Barang. Sun on Snow is based on a poem of five lines, five one-syllable words per line, which can be read or sung both horizontally and vertically. The basic melody's pitches are derived by in five variations.

This remarkable collection of choral music by Baltic composers opens our ears to both their similarities and differences. There are folk influences aplenty (from Veijo Tormis in particular), but also some surprises. Sven-David Sandstrom's "Hear my prayer" takes Purcell's piece of the same name as a jumping-off point, and although his treatment is modern, the lamentation remains vivid. Arvo Part's history of Jesus' genealogy, sung in English, is almost fun in its seemingly endless repetition of "which was the son of," while Rautavaara's four-part, seven-minute Lorca Suite is a fascinating study in miniatures. Vasks's "Dona nobis pacem" (the only piece with orchestral accompaniment) has a hypnotic downward vocal sequence that contrasts with the rising strings. The other works hold the interest as well, and the ubiquitous and gifted Paul Hillier leads the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in lush performances. Fans of the great Eastern choral tradition won't want to miss this. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Great 20th century choral music.......2007-02-07
Some enchanting music.......2006-12-08
I heard the first track (Bless the Lord, O My Soul) by chance on NPR one evening and was immediately spellbound by its unique phrasing.
The last track (Dona Nobis Pacem), aided by a climactic interplay of voice and string, stung me with a beautiful sensation which reaffirmed to my soul that music captures the reason for being alive.
As a newcomer to choral music, I cannot compare this work to many others. However, I can wholeheartedly declare that this album will appeal to those that kneel in humility to the beauty of the human voice.
Impeccable performances, soothing music.......2005-05-26
The choir performs with ubiquitous energy and notable vigor when a selection would require it. Furthermore, there are many contrasting works featured on this disc, from the ethereal Cyrillus Kreek selection, to the folk-inspired Spring Song and other, more avant-garde repertoire.
It may be the case that one will not instantly fall in love with every single track on this disc, but I would make a case for the fact that there are a number of universally appealing choral works on this disc that, next to the somewhat affordable price, would certainly warrant the purchase!

The Black Mass
Manufacturer: Son Boy Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B0009VTA06 |
Product Description
Surprise reissue of the most infamous and difficult to procure Sun Ra artifact; originally issued on Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones)'s Jihad label (home of the original Sunny's Time Now by Sunny Murray as well). This is the first release on the DC-based Son Boy label officially sanctioned by Baraka (and mastered from the original tapes that have been sitting in his basement all along). A strange and revolutionary play by Baraka, with musical interludes by the Myth-Science Orchestra. Very, very historic. This is a sort of radio horror play written by LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka) and based on the Nation of Islam story of the evil angel Yaqub. Ra and the Arkestra provide incidental music. The backing is mostly spare and low-volume, so as not to drown out the players. Actors: Amiri Baraka; Carl Boissiere; David Shakes; Bob Washington; Yusef Iman; Barry Wynn. Women's Chorus: Elaine Jones, Jacqui Bugg, Sylvia Jones. Musical backing: Sun Ra-Hohner clavinet, organ; Marshall Allen-alto sax, oboe, piccolo; Danny Davis-alto sax; John Gilmore-tenor sax, percussion; Pat Patrick-baritone sax, percussion; Robert Cummings-bass clarinet; Ronnie Boykins-bass; (probably: Nimrod Hunt-percussion; James Jacson-percussion). When the women are asked to contain the monster with an incantation, they oblige with the melody of Satellites are Spinning.
