About the Artist
'Rêves' is an amazing piece of work. Emilien has a rich, soulful, romantic quality that lures you in and holds you there. His musical training is evident and is a nice change from the other stuff that's on the charts.

Product Description:
"‘Rêves’ is an amazing piece of work. Poppy, with thoughtful melodies, interesting song structures, and great sounds. Gorgeous sonic textures of guitar, keyboard, sitar and voices. Intriguing and beautiful overlays of violin accompaniment and guitar. This album provides a variety of songs sung in English, French, and Creole. Definitely a good move in a positive way because we can appreciate Emilien’s voice in that many more languages. He has a rich, soulful, romantic quality that just lures you in and holds you there. A great all around album."

5 out of 5 stars Obra de Arte Mal Entendida.......2005-07-13

5 out of 5 stars An interesting experimental album.......2005-05-06

In 1999 Café Tacvba released this double album entitled `Reves/Yo soY' (both were also sold separately) Again, the graphic design is very unusual but compelling at the same time, the double cd edition didn't have any bonus at all but the two cd's in a carton box with a very suggestive design on it.

The idea behind this double album seemed interesting but odd at the same time: `Yo soy' would include 52 new tracks (they are actually 15, but two of them are divided into many) from the band and `Reves' would include 12 instrumental themes original from the band and performed by themselves and other artists, such as Kronos Quartet, Arghul and Compañia Nacional de Danza Folklorica.

Yo soY

This album is different from its antecessors, we listen to a more mature and calm band, the vocal style of Nru has obviously improved from last album (listen to `El rio' and you will know what I'm talking about) and the mature ness of the band is present in the entire album. This album may not contain their most famous pieces but I believe what happened is that a lot of people got so caught with `Re' that they were expecting something similar.

Songs like `El rio', `El polen' (sung again by Emmanuel) are pieces that didn't transcend as much as `La locomotora' for example, but that are very interesting pieces, the piano and the vocals in `El polen' are something like never before shown in their albums, `Bicicleta' is another very interesting piece from this disc.

Reves

Among all the Café Tacvba albums this is the one I find the most experimental. It contains 9 instrumental songs performed by the band in a variety of styles that are hard to define. One of the highlights of these is track 9, that would later be entitled `Reves'.

The most interesting pieces from this album are tracks 7, 8 and 10. `10' is a musical piece made with the sound of people dancing, what you actually listen to is people stomping their feet on the ground directed by Nieves Paniagua, this track gives you a sense of emptiness on the performance but it definitely is one of a kind song. `5.1' performed by `Arghul' is a classical type piece performed with `clarinetes'. The last piece is `M.C.' performed by none other that the `Kronos Quartet', this song is just beautifully played and well executed.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable album for any Café Tacvba fan interested in the evolution of the band and not in having another `Re'. It shows an evolution and mature ness, but it is not definitely the ideal album if you are going to listen to them for the first time, you had better buy their first two albums, enjoy them, understand them and then listen to how they evolved in these two interesting pieces that are `Reves/Yo soY'

5 out of 5 stars Incredible stuff!!.......2004-01-02

These guys are re-inventing music!! It is such a refreshing CD!! After years of being bombarded with the boy bands and the britney spears, and the limp biscuits this album is an oasis of beauty, creativity, talent, and courage! Once you listen to this album you will get hooked forever! It is like nothing you have heard in your life! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Carnaval.......2005-12-05

There is no track listing on Amazon for this album. It is a re-release of Sumi Jo's album "Carnaval" which had, for some insane reason, gone out of print (something to do with a merger).

As for the album itself, there is no way to accurately describe how impressive this singing is. Jo's coloratura may not be as fast as Emma Kirkby's or as accurate as Cecilia Bartoli's, but nobody can surpass her sense of fun or the ease with which she sustains her highest notes.

Two tracks in particular stand out: "Le jour sous le soleil beni" is a rather slow, beautiful aria (the only non-coloratura aria included on the disc) which is capped with what must be the longest sustained high D-flat in history--sung pianissimo. Montserrat Caballe, eat your heart out. The other is the Carnaval de Venise, made famous by Mado Robin. Although Jo does not hit Robin's B-flat above high C, her version is infinitely more impressive, particularly the last two minutes, which is simply a roller-coaster ride of coloratura with no rests, no rubato, and very few breaths. Everyone I've ever played this track for has been rendered speechless.

Although those two arias stand out, there are really no tracks on this album which are not impressive and/or beautful. The Sevillana captures her sense of fun, "Canari" and the "Couplets de Mysoli" emphasize her control of pianissimo high notes, and "Jours de mon enfance" and "Reves d'amour, reves de gloire" both end in perfect, sustained high E's. One of my favorite albums ever. I'm happy it has been re-released.

4 out of 5 stars From Madagascar to bestiaries.......2007-06-01

Ravel's vocal music is fantastic stuff indeed, and this recording offers a very good selection of almost all of it. The singers include the extremely good Claire Brua (whom I first heard in the delightful duet album "Vivent les vacances") and Laurent Naouri, who is a wonderful baritone with a terrific sense of line and colour.

I thought the two sopranos and the second baritone were not as good as Brua and Naouri, though. Inva Mula-Tchako, who sings the Cinq mélodies populaires grecques, is light-voiced and quite pleasant of timbre (although neither gorgeous nor a great interpreter), but the other soprano, Valerie Millot, disappointed me very much. Her "Manteau de fleurs" was uninteresting and lacking in beauty compared to the ravishing recording of this song by Elly Ameling (and even the singing of this by Mady Mesplé pleased me more).

Gerard Theruel's singing of the "Chanson française" was mostly dreadful - and one of his vocal problems was cruelly highlighted in that track. He has a tendency to go under pitch (badly enough to irritate), and usually it's the result of singing a C or above after singing a lower note requiring a leap upwards of a fourth or more. However, he did a MUCH better job with the "Histoire naturelles", to which I enjoyed listening.

Claire Brua's best singing may well be the "Chansons madécasses", which are given a dark, sensuous and dangerous treatment entirely in keeping with the poetry and settings. She has a beautiful mezzo voice which she uses very intelligently indeed.

Laurent Naouri was particularly admirable in... well, actually, in all he sang. He's a very, very good baritone with such a sympathy for the feeling and style - you will be sure to love his performance and singing of the "Chanson hébraîque", the "Deux mélodies hébraîques" (although I still do prefer Jessye Norman's singing of "Kaddish"), the sombre "Un grand sommeil noir", the fantastical "Don Quichotte à Dulcinée", the "Ronsard à son âme", the "Les grand vents venus d'outremer", the exquisite "Sainte" and the wonderfully bizarre "Sur l'herbe". (But for the definitive singing of "Sur l'herbe", listen to Gabriel Bacquier's rendering which is nothing short of amazing, lacking no folly or perfection!)

In short, PARTICULARLY because this is incredibly good value, this is a valuable set to have. The playing of accompanist David Abramovitz is, I agree, excellent, and he supports the singers magnificently.

I would like to recommend two other recordings as well. In particular, because the repertoire almost entirely overlaps, the 2CD set released by EMI, called "Ravel Mélodies", in which Teresa Berganza, Felicity Lott, Mady Mesplé, Jessye Norman, Gabriel Bacquier and José Van Dam sing with some of the best renditions of these songs that are available. In particular, Bacquier's utterly amazing "Histoires naturelles" is not to be missed! Secondly, Elly Ameling's completely delightful recording of Ravel songs, entitled "Ravel: Shéhérazade" includes not only the Shéhérazade cycle (with piano instead of orchestra - I think this is the only recording of it with piano accompaniment), but also a positive plethora of Ravel's most ravishing songs - Manteau de fleurs, Trois beaux oiseaux de paradis (very hauntingly sung), Nicolette, D'Anne qui lui jecta de la neige, D'Anne jouant de l'espinette, the "Cinq mélodies populaires grecques", Tripatos, the "Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé", "Noël des jouets" and "Sainte".

As beautiful as Ms Ameling's singing of the Mallarmé songs were, I still feel there is one interpretation of them even finer - by Suzanne Danco. If you can get hold of that recording, you are sure to fall in love with her singing in those three songs, for somehow her tone is exactly the right sound for these wonderfully enigmatic and detached poems in Ravel's setting.

The "Cinq mélodies populaires grecques", sung on this Naxos 2CD set in the original Greek version (much less usual than the French version), are - although quite pretty on this set - better represented in the performance by Barbara Hendricks in her recording entitled "Ravel/Duparc: Mélodies/Songs". That's an exquisite recording, well worth getting for both the Ravel and the Duparc.

In short - I like quite a lot of this recording, but I am not taken at all by one of the sopranos, am not entirely enthused by the other soprano and one of the baritones, but think very highly of the mezzo and the second baritone. Certainly it's a recording worth having, but I would not take it in preference to my other Ravel recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Songs Exquisitely Sung and Played.......2004-02-01

Anna Russell, that inimitable lampooner of classical music foibles, once famously opined that French art songs are 'great poetry set to rather wispy music.' That's funny (and true) as far as goes, but it doesn't especially apply to the chansons and songs of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). His songs tend to have haute-cuisine meat on their bones and yet are polished like pieces of Lalique crystal. Ravel was one of the great early 20th-century composers for piano and his song accompaniments show no relaxation of his pianistic skills. Still, like most good song composers, his main attention was placed on melodic line and presentation of the text. And indeed in many of his songs the texts are 'great poetry.' We are fortunate in this 2CD set to have a wide selection of Ravel's songs and chansons. Since Amazon has not listed the contents of the set (at least at the time of writing this review), I will do so now. First are seven settings of folk poetry: Chansons espagnole, française, écossaise (Burns's 'Ye banks and braes'), italienne, hébraïque; Chanson du rouet; and Noël des jouets.

These are followed on CD1 by:
        Deux mélodies hébraïques
        Deux épigrammes de Clément Marot
        Cinq mélodies populaires grecques
        Un grand sommeil noir
        Manteau de fleurs
        Si morne!
Don Quichotte à Dulcinée (three chansons)

        CD2:
        Histoires naturelles (five chansons)
Ballade de la reine morte d'aimer
        Tripatos
Trois chansons (including 'Trois beaux oiseaux du paradis,' 'Nicolette,' and 'Ronde')

        Ronsard à son âme
        Les grands vents venus d'outremer
        Sainte
        Sur l'herbe
        Rêves
Vocalise - étude en forme de habanera
Chansons madécasses (three chansons, with flute, cello, piano)

The singers, all resident in France and not completely listed yet by Amazon, are Inva Mula and Valérie Millot, sopranos; Claire Brua, mezzo; and Gérard Theruel and Laurent Naouri, baritones. The rock-solid and extremely sensitive accompanist is American pianist David Abramovitz. The recording was made at the 900-year-old Abbey of Fontevraud, now a cultural center located in the Anjou-Touraine region southwest of Paris.

It is not possible to describe each of the songs and their performances here but I will mention several:

Claire Brua, a really quite musical and rich-voiced mezzo, sings 'Rêves' exquisitely, as also the very first song, the sultry 'Chanson espagnole.' Inva Mula, a clear-voiced light soprano, does well by the Five Popular Greek Mélodies. I had never heard the 'Two Epigrams of Clément Marot' (that rather obscure French poet made better-known some years back in Douglas Hofstadter's thrilling book about translation, 'Le Bon Ton de Clément Marot,') and baritone Gérard Theruel sings them deliciously. Speaking of great poetry, how's this lyric? (in English translation) which is fully matched by Ravel's icy-hot setting:

"Anne in sport threw some snow at me
        That I certainly found cold;
But it was fire, the experience that I had,
        For I was suddenly aflame."

The much better known 'Chansons madécasses' and 'Histoires naturelles' are sung idiomatically by, respectively, Mme. Brua and M. Theruel.

Finally, a word about a discovery for me, the 'Trois Chansons' of which the light-hearted final two are utterly delightful and sung with girlish élan by soprano Millot. She would be a wonderful candidate for, say, the last movement of Mahler's Fourth Symphony; her voice has that pure quality so needed there.

I am thrilled to have this collection of so many of Ravel's songs in one place. I would not want to give up my recordings of 'Chansons madécasses' by Jan de Gaetani or 'Don Quichotte à Dulcinée' by José van Dam in the orchestral version. But I honestly believe I'll be reaching for this set frequently over the years.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-10

Faure's songs are exquisite. Unfortunately, this album does not show them in the best light. Three of the five singers - Felicity Lott, Stephen Varcoe and Jennifer Smith - are closer to sixty than fifty, and they sound it. Geraldine McGreevy and Jean-Paul Fouchecourt provide a mere nine (out of 28) tracks of compensation, but nearly 24 minutes of Jennifer Smith wavering through La chanson d'Eve is almost too much.

5 out of 5 stars Why don't these get performed more often?.......2002-04-04

For the life of me I can not understand why Ravel's wonderful vocal music is not more widely performed... it's simply exquisite. And the performances on this disc do not disappoint- some of the finest singers of our time. Highlights for me include Jose Van Dam's delicious singing (particularly the Don Quichotte a Dulcinee songs), Felicity Lott's marvellous Mallarme poems, Jessye Norman's sumptuous Chansons Madecasses and for superb musicianship alone (despite the wonderful voice!) Gabriel Bacquier's Histoires Naturelles. A must for lovers of fine singing, and anyone who enjoys Ravel's music.

This is the second, and the lesser, volume of pianist Joanne Polk's Amy Beach series. It includes a couple of fairly substantial pieces, the Prelude and Fugue and the Ballade, along with a collection of the relatively trivial music that made up most of the piano works of Beach and her contemporaries. Her chamber music includes some hefty pieces that show her at her best, but most of this music shows her fitting in with her era. It's not to be despised, but this isn't the most significant music in the world. It is, however, extremely well played and recorded. --Leslie Gerber

4 out of 5 stars Beach, the New Age Composer.......2001-11-01

Recently, I discovered a score for one of Beach's two hermit thrush pieces at the Dartmouth College Bookstore. Since I am from Vermont, and the hermit thrush is the Vermont state bird, I was more than intrigued by this piece: "A Hermit Thrush at Morn." I was amazed to find how modern this piece sounded, at least for the day in which it was written. Parts of it were based on the Wagnerian style so common in late nineteenth century music, but there was a feel about this, as though the bird whose song she had copied had unwittingly dragged her into the modern era. While I would not avoid listening to Beach's more substantial works on this CD, such as the stodgy "Prelude and Fugue, op. 81," I find Beach is more interesting in her shorter pieces which are full of fun and good humor. You should also check out the last CD in this set, FIRE-FLIES.

4 out of 5 stars BEACH AT HER BEST.......2000-10-25

Beach is a talent of no small measure when it comes to piano music, and Polk a more than worthy advocate.

The opening Valse-Caprice, Op. 4 is delightful: piquant with a hint of melancholy, as is The Fair Hills of Eire, Op. 91, and Les Reves de Columbine, Op. 65, works comprised of thoroughly enjoyable, intimate miniatures. Especially enthralling, though, are the two pieces of Op. 92 ("The Hermit Thrush At Eve" and "The Hermit Thrush At Morn"). These solitary, mournful works, which Beach actually composed using precise birdsong--- marvelously!--- are haunting and unforgettable. Overtly enterprising are Beach's attempts at the larger spectrum, such as the Ballade, Op. 6 and her Prelude and Fugue, Op. 81. Perhaps there is too much fiery display, with little actual substance; but the pieces, though, are still engaging.

Polk shows herself to be a pianist of imagination, fine touch and a genuine kinship. Beautiful sound matches her beautiful performance.

Now that conductor Richard Bonynge doesn't have his now-retired wife Joan Sutherland to accompany him on his arcane journeys into forgotten French opera, he has hooked up with the spectacular coloratura Sumi Jo for a series of recordings exploring mid-19th-century operetta. This one is a nice aria compilation, especially welcome since you wouldn't want to hear the entire scores of these works by Adam, Grétry, Messager and Delibes. One hears influences by Rossini, flashes of Mozart, and lots of vocal fireworks-- especially the final selection, Carnaval de Venise by Massé. --David Patrick Stearns

This CD is a MUST GET! It's very relaxing - great to listen to when guests are over or you simply feel like being alone from the world. In this CD - you can see that she's matured more and is better then ever ... Those who like Sumi-Jo, grab it as soon as possible!

5 out of 5 stars This album will knock your heart off!.......1999-11-20

Just an intriguing episode to add here. When this album was released, quite a few people thought that it is absolutely impossible for a human to sing like Jo did. They conjectured that there must be a sort of mechanical manipulations added. To prove that there was no mechanical aid to this recording, Sumi Jo sang the whole arias in "Carnaval" in front of millions of French TV viewers and audiences. And the result was: She was technically exactly the same as in the recording. Her live singing was even more touching and impressive! Her "Les Pantins de Violette: La Chanson du canari" was so beautiful that it caused tears from my eyes. And everyone in the audience gave her a long standing ovation!

        5 out of 5 stars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-09-02

No words could describe the beauty of Jo's voice and her input of emotions in this album. Sentimental, nostalgic and GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Felt dizzy intoxicated by "Carnaval de Venise".

5 out of 5 stars This recording will knock your socks off..........1999-08-26

Sumi Jo is more than just a soprano but a consummate artist, elegant to her fingertips. Her coloratura ranges from sweet and clear to absolutely thilling, as in the final Carnival de Venise. A few top notes sound thin (noticeable splicing has been used to conclude some of the arias with high notes), but those are little qualms considering her elegant, supple phrasing and perfect diction. In the internationalized climate of the modern opera world, it is reassuring that there are still performers who understand the sensitivity of the French style.

5 out of 5 stars Sumi Jo at her Best!.......1999-08-03

This album is definitely one of the best coloratura recitals on records. Sumi Jo is simply enchanting. She has a voice of great beauty and perfect technique. Her command of trills, roulades and legato line is simply astonishing. Sumi Jo' performance on this recording (a collection of not very known arias from French opera comique) reminds me a lot of Amelita Galli-Curci in her combination of charm and vocal virtuosism. The recording is a delight from start to finish. Among the hightlights are Sevillanas, Charmant oiseaux ( the cadenzas with flute are amazing), the beautiful liricism and stunning high D flat of the aria from Madame Chrysantéme, and of course the Carnival of Venice, a true feast of vocal fireworks. This recording is a must for all the fans of great singing.
