From Amazon.co.uk

From the first strains of the opening track, "Sisters," it's clear that Betcha Bottom Dollar is not a typical debut album. But then the Puppini Sisters are not a typical pop act, at least not in the 21st century. Their close, three-part harmonies are reminiscent of the vocal groups of the 1930s and 1940s, and particularly the Andrews Sisters. But rather than sounding like an anachronism, the Puppini Sisters merely demonstrate the timelessness of some of these songs. Betcha Bottom Dollar is fresh, fun and vibrant, blowing the dust off of cobwebby classics like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Mr. Sandman". Elsewhere, they also put their own unique stamp on more recent hits, with varying results. While Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" fail to get things swinging, Blondie's "Heart of Glass" and the Smiths' "Panic" are both injected with a fresh new (old?) sound. Much credit must also be given to producer Benoit Charest, who manages to employ a whole host of instrumentation and orchestration, whilst never forgetting to put the voices of the Puppini Sisters front and centre. It might be easy to dismiss the Puppini Sisters' debut as another novelty album, but their intentions and love for the style--like their voices themselves--are crystal clear. --Robert Burrow

Album Description

Inspired by the Oscar®-nominated film The Triplets of Belleville (a French animated movie which features a `40s-style harmony group), The Puppini Sisters -- Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins, and Stephanie O'Brien -- formed in London. Dressed in 1940's-style wardrobe, the three sing like The Andrews Sisters with inspiring harmonies, and perform classics such as "Mr. Sandman," "In The Mood," and "Jeepers Creepers." But what make The Puppini Sisters truly stand out are their show-stopping interpretations of more current tunes.

Betcha'll have fun with this CD. Loved the old songs and loved the way the newer songs were arranged.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-07-12

I really enjoy listening to the Puppini Sisters. At times they sound almost like the Andrew Sisters, as in Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, but in Heart of Glass they have their own unique sound. I discovered them by accident on Amazon, and I'm glad I did. I'm planning on buying some of their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars Bette'Cha will like it!!.......2007-07-06

All real vocals in the studio with no technology altering! Like they did back in the day. In Betcha Bottom Dollar's case, the 40's and up! Their harmony's are impeccable as is their choice of song. They obviously resemble The Andrew Sisters and The Boswell Sisters with their renditions of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, In The Mood, Bei Mir Bist Du Sc hon, Heebie Jeebies, Jeepers Creepers and Java Jive. In the early 70's Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester, Manhattan Transfer and the Pointer Sisters also paid tribute and got their start performing this type of music. Of course they all went on to do many other major achievements in the music industry.

What makes this CD so appealing in this day and age is that they also take songs from other time periods and give them a new twist...or an old one as it is! Listen to how cleverly they recorded Blondie's Heart Of Glass and Gloria Gaynor's anthem I Will Survive. You never heard them like this...and how refreshing! I am also impressed with other selections like the reworking of The Smiths Panic and Kate Bush Wuthering Heights which were big UK hits.

Also included is Sway which has made a comeback via Michael Buble and Tu Voi Fa L'Americano made famous in The Talented Mr Ripley movie. There is also a fabulous version of Mr. Sandman which was recorded by The Chordettes, McGuire Sisters and Emylou Harris. Last but not least is the perfect song to open this set, Sisters, which was recently covered by Bette Midler & Linda Ronstadt on Bette's Rosemary Clooney tribute.

These girls are awesome and it will be a pleasure to watch them blossom into and awesome vocal trio. They are currently working on a second CD with all of the above and some originals. Can't wait...til then enjoy

4 out of 5 stars P.S.(Puppini Sisters) I love you!.......2007-07-03

My brother found this recording for $10 in Bangkok - not a counterfeit. The sisters are precious, the more I listen to their songs the more I appreciate the nostalgic music brought up-to-date. I hope they turn up the heat and let their harmonious voices really loose on their next recording. The background music does not do justice to their singing. In any case, I would buy any recording they care to make.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Andrew Sisters.......2007-06-29

This is a nostalgia CD of the 40's music. Their harmony is great, but the background music is bland. The 40's big band music, it's not. Sorry, but a guitar can't replace the big band sound. It is not on my top ten CD's.

The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life".......2007-07-16

What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life", it delivers more of same from start to finish. However, clearly one-upped by nearly every track on "The Open Door".

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2007-07-09

This is one of the very best CDs ever made, and one of the ONLY ones I've ever found that I can listen to from beginning to end and never skip past a single song. I think there's maybe four or five others in the world that I can say that about, and I listen to almost all types of music, from Mozart to Enya to Tool to Billie Holiday to Simon and Garfunkel to Staind to... anyway, it's a masterpiece. Some music snobs like to turn up their noses at Evanescence and mock those who listen to them because they're generally thought of as "Teenage Goth", but I have a message for them: GET OVER YOURSELVES!! BY BEING NARROW MINDED YOU ARE ONLY DEPRIVING YOURSELVES OF SOME OF THE BEST, MOST HAUNTING MUSIC YOU COULD ASK FOR!! I listen to this CD ALOT and I never get tired of it. Amy Lee is amazing! TRY IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Light in the Darkness.......2007-07-03

Fans of bands like Nightwish, The Gathering, Lennon Murphy and Lacuna Coil are either rejoicing or cursing Evanescence. Their brand of atmospheric gothic rock / metal is quite comparable to all bands mentioned above yet they are the ones in the Billboard Top 10 Album chart.

"Bring Me To Life" is a stunning track on its own merit that could stand to lose the male pseudo rap-rock vocal yelling "Wake Me Up". (If you hear the demo version without the male vocal you will understand) I find it amusing that fans of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are buying this disc just on the basis of this track alone only to realize that the rest of the disc is moody, dark journey into the belly of various beasts. Nevertheless, Amy Lee has a haunting voice that layers beautifully over gothic rock/metal passages much like Tarja, Anneke, Christina, and Tori Amos. "Haunted" is a short, but remarkable track that allows Amy's vocals to breathe chilling words of despair. Just read the cold words to "Imaginary" and you wonder what exact demon tortures the writer's (Ben Moody) soul.

Overall, this disc is way too deep and thought provoking for its target audience. For those of us that have supported this style of music for years, please don't pass judgment against this disc until you have experienced the overall enchantment within its 11 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Amy Lee: The most underrated voice in music today.......2007-06-27

I remember when "Bring me to life" started playing regularly on a local rock station a few years ago. I thought it was a pretty cool song and liked the vocals of female singer Amy Lee, who seemed to have a wide range and yet still able to have somewhat of an overall mystique to her sound that I still have a hard time describing to this day. At that point a friend of mine loaned me the CD, but upon the first couple of listens I put it back without a second thought.

After selling 14 million copies worldwide and having a strong sophomore release with "The Open Door", I decided to give Evanescence another chance, returning to the debut album "Fallen". Sometimes it takes giving an album a second chance to make a first impression, and this time around I guess I was ready to embrace a band that was deemed as Goth Metal by the masses, but had a female vocalist that was able to help them rise above the all too familiar growl and dirge vocal efforts that usually fall into this category. Strong singles that stand out to me start out with Track 1 in "Going Under", which has a nice, simple guitar piece that has enough grind to stay down in the darker, more brooding sounds of this style of music. Track 6 is a tune called "Tourniquet" and has some eerie tones that help it start out before breaking into a clean, balanced attack of guitars and percussion. The overall structure of this album is great, and although I said there are several singles I like, I will just sum it up by saying there is something great about every song on this album.

What really is a selling point for me, however, is the lead singer Amy Lee. Amy's voice is poetic in deliverance of the songs and has a great overall emotional connection with the music, while at the same time her range allows her to add a lot of diversity to each and every song throughout the album. Overall you have a powerful set of music that rocks when it has to, and has some piano melody to add to the mix (Track 6 and 9 in particular) that I feel sets it apart from a lot of the genre's and classifications that people have been trying to put it in. If you are not much into newer "Nu-Metal" or what have you, but enjoy some of the progressive metal sounds and intricate approaches of such musicians, you just might find Evanescence to your liking. As stated before, it took me a few years to "come back" and discover them, but the wait was worth it and I look forward to any new releases this band has to offer.

It doesn't happen much, but there are times when the departure of a group's most prominent player inspires the rest of the act to get seriously bizzy. Strength & Love, a tight disc that skitters from track to shiny track with imagination and a renewed sense of rap's widened boundaries, makes Bone Thugs-N-Harmony a prime example. Without Bizzy Bone to layer a drizzle of Midwestern vocal weirdness over their sound, Layzie, Krayzie, and Wish Bone call in a crew of hard-hitting helpers: Akon delivers twice, first on the melting "I Tried" and again on the weepy "Never Forget Me," Mariah Carey flits through "Lil Love" alongside Bow Wow, and Twista and Yolanda Adams also make reputation-enhancing appearances (Twista by barreling through "C-Town" at breakneck speed and Adams by giving it up gorgeously for God on "Order My Steps (Dear Lord)"). Best of all about this proud-making comeback disc is its clever use of samples: "Wind Blow" pins the Fleetwood Mac chestnut "The Chain" down to urban pavement without wrecking its spirit, and the smartly produced "The Streets" updates the vibe of Bobby Womack's timeless "Across 110th Street" while preserving its grit-covered class. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2007-07-14

Bone Thugs come back strong with this latest addition. Their sound has been updated, but is still recognizable as uniquely Bone Thugs

3 out of 5 stars OK .......2007-07-13

I was a bit disapointed because there are only two or three songs on the CD that I play. I guess my expectations were too high and too reminiscent of their old stuff. My son plays it non stop, hence the reason 3 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Their best since The Art Of War.......2007-07-08

To me,this is the Bone cd is the best since the Art Of War. I liked some tracks off of Resurrection, and Thug Stories was the best cd in a long time, but this tops both of those albums with no problem at all. I like every track on here except for 2 of them. Tha Bone boys are back and they brought they fire flow that they were known for in the begining!!!

If you still doubt this groups talent then listen to the album opener Flow Motion...makes my jaw drop every time that I hear that track!
Bump In The trunk should become another Bone classic. They actually make "Wind Blow" work 100%! The first single is a sad song about trying in life, but also kind of inspirational at the same time. C-Town with Twista is awesome, everyone tears their verse up! 9mm and Gun Blast remind me of them 'ole Bone Boys classicks!!!

If you ever been a fan of Bone, then pick this classick up! Bone boys are back 110%!

5 out of 5 stars My boyz are back.......2007-06-30

I love this album... been a fan since creepin on ah come up and I have been very critical of them on their past couple of albums. This one reminds me of the old Bone Thugs but with a more updated sound. I love it and any one who hasn't heard them entire album needs to go pick it up soon! Love my boyz!!!!

4 out of 5 stars I agree, best since Art Of War........2007-06-30

I'm a big fan of the group and have been since I first heard E1999 back in the day. I like Bone stuff most normal people don't, but even I haven't been 'feeling' their latest albums.
Ok, honestly, they have flat out sucked in recent years.

This one is better than decent, good? Not great but good. Definitely the best since Art of War. Their original style is still absent, they do sound like an entirely different group for most of the album, I'll admit. Bone has had a couple of songs, solo, on singles or on other's albums that were better than most on this album released recently (Ridin' Dirty for example)

Easy 4/5 compared to rap on the market now, 4/5 compared to albums they've released recently. However, I wouldn't rank it so high if this had been an immediate release after E1999.

Flowmotion reminds me of old Bone Thugs, definitely the highlight of the album for me, it's one of the best songs on this album and the style reminds me of old-school bone thugs.

They have a more solid 4/5 song to number of song ratio on this album than any Bone album since E1999.
There isn't a single song that really stands out as complete garbage, some subpar, but no garbage.
Can't say there is a single song on this album that would force me to change the radio station if it came on, which is saying a lot for Bone Thugs nowadays.

My favorites on the album:
1. Flowmotion
4. I Tried (Akon and Bone work really well together, even if this song isn't Bone-style)
7. Order my steps
9. 9MM
11. Candy Paint (very pop-like song so it's embarrasing but I can't help it)
14. Never Forget Me (again, Akon and Bone work really well together)

On the Akon songs, I'm not a huge fan of Akon but he really does work well with Bone Thugs in these two songs.

Album Description

They may have rationed meat, milk, canned goods, and gasoline, but there was no limit to the musical talent during World War II. Morale-boosting sounds on the home front and "over there" were one of the Allies' most potent weapons. WWII gave birth to many of the 1940s' most popular artists and songs, as well as many of the most important independent record labels. Songs That Got Us Through WWII is the first of a two-volume series collecting the hits that kept the home fires burning and brought a little bit of America to the G.I.s overseas. Compiled and developed by singer/songwriter/music historian Billy Vera, Vol. 1 features many of the era's biggest artists, including The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Harry James, and many more.

5 out of 5 stars A hit with the WWII generation.......2007-07-15

We played this CD at a family reunion honoring our elders (who either fought in WWII or were married to those who fought). It was a hit. The tunes ranged from bouncy to sentimental, but all were enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars great compilation of 40's music........2007-03-18

i was born in 1961, but like the geeky audiophile that i am, i have eagerly dug into all the decades that have produced recorded music. i always thought that the forties were one of the weaker decades out there when it comes to sonic delights. so why do i love the two volumes of "songs that got us through wwii" so much? rhino records has a lot to do with it. as all audiophiles of the cd age now, rhino is one of the best outfits around when it comes to compilations of music. on these 2 wonderful discs from the forties, they have done it again. pure pleasure is to be had here. one drifts back to another time, across decades, to experience the popular songs of another american culture. this is a perfect introduction to that decade for anyone. having heard these two volumes, i can't wait to give the forties another chance. i am being won over, i think. thanks rhino.

5 out of 5 stars Songs That Got Us Through WWII.......2007-01-04

When my mother heard this CD that I played on a recent road trip, she sang along with every one! She loved it so much that I bought one for her, plus the second one in the set. The selections are great (variety of songs and artists) and recording quality very good considering a lot of these were recorded 60 years ago. This is a great CD for anyone over 50 who grew up with this music or listened to their parents play it.

5 out of 5 stars My Review.......2006-11-20

The songs on this CD are the songs I loved listening & singing to when I
was a young teen. Wonderful CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Songs that got us through "the big one"..........2006-11-20

World War II was the most catastrophic in history. Fifty-five million people were killed in just five years. Music had the power to make people feel better even when life was this rough; and this CD proves it.

The CD starts on a strong upbeat note with The Andrews Sisters belting out "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Vic Schoen and his orchestra perform the musical arrangement which packs a big punch! I like this song for its "swing" feel and its playfulness at the same time.

The next song, "I'll Be Seeing You," switches right away to the sadder aspects of war. This classic tearjerker song deals with the pain two lovers or spouses experience when one must go to war. Frank Sinatra sings this beautifully. Other songs that deal with the pain and stress of war include "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" performed flawlessly by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra; "I'll Walk Alone" by Martha Tilton and "I Don't Want To Walk Without You" sung by Helen Forrest with Harry James and his Orchestra.

The CD also gives us songs that express hope for a quick end to the war so that a sense of normalcy can return. I love the beautiful "When The Lights Go On (All Over The World)" and "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover." These are truly classic pop vocals.

"G.I. Jive" and "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" are great upbeat songs, too. Terrific!

The CD has a solid ending with the touching "It's Been A Long, Long Time" sung by Kitty Kallen with Harry James and his Orchestra performing the musical arrangement.

The quality of the remastering could be better. Throughout the CD there is a lot of surface noise and it is obvious that these songs were recorded a very long while ago. However, in the liner notes there is a note that these recordings were remastered before superior technology was available to reduce surface noise. I considered giving this CD 4 1/2 stars for this but the songs are so good that this will be a five star review.

Bill Vera contributes an informative essay for the liner notes and there are several great photos of the artists on this CD. You also get the song credits and the date each hit was released. Excellent!

Overall, this is a great CD for people who love American pop classics from the World War II era and big band vocals in general. I highly recommend this CD; and if you like it then I suggest you try volume two of Songs That Got Us Through World War II. May you enjoy this nostalgic CD as much as I did!

What's terrific about this album is the sound of Charlie Louvin's voice. Weathered and worn by his 79 years, its fragility underscores the humanity in the morality plays he favors, like the gentle pledge of faith "The Christian Life." What's disappointing is its lack of imagination. Despite the presence of skilled contemporary songwriters like Elvis Costello and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the only new tune is "Ira," Louvin's tribute to his late, high-tenor-singing brother. As the Louvin Brothers, Charlie and Ira took shape-note-based close-harmony singing to the pinnacle of country music in the 1940s and '50s, earning a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. On these dozen songs, Louvin's joined on vocals by George Jones, Alex McManus of Bright Eyes, Will Oldham, Bobby Bare, Tom T. Hall, Tweedy, Costello, and others, with Marty Stuart on mandolin and a crack studio band including Chris Scruggs of BR-549 and angelic vocalist Dianne Berry. Bare and Berry manage to make magic with Louvin; the rest do their best with chestnuts like "Kneeling Drunkard's Plea" and "Worried Man Blues," although Jones's voice is, sadly, ravaged, and the bursts of guitar feedback on the Louvins classic "Great Atomic Power" are absurd. Nonetheless, this album is a welcome return for a country pioneer after a 10-year hiatus from recording. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

The term "living legend" gets thrown around quite a bit, but it actually applies to Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin.

Charlie Louvin's influence on country, alt-country, and their many sub-genres, is incalculable. The unique harmonies and lyrical folk poetry of the Louvin Brothers ("among the top duos in country music history" - AllMusic.com) have inspired countless covers of their songs by such artists as Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, the Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Uncle Tupelo, The Raconteurs (with Jack White) and Beck.

Produced by Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Calexico, Candi Staton) and Charlie Louvin, the new album was recorded in Spring/Summer 2006 in Nashville. It features guest performances by Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Bobby Bare Sr., Tift Merritt, Marty Stuart, David Kilgour, and members of Bright Eyes, Lambchop, Superchunk, Blanche and Clem Snide, among others.

The album features several Louvin Brothers classics as well as country favorites first popularized by Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, the Carter Family, and the Monroe Brothers. Charlie has also included a moving tribute to his late brother Ira, with whom he formed the Louvin Brothers in 1940. (Ira Louvin died in a car accident in 1965, at age 41.)

Charlie will tour with his band throughout 2007, including stops at SXSW and Bonnaroo, as well as special summer appearances celebrating his 80th Birthday (July 7, 2007).

5 out of 5 stars For a great interview with Charlie, check out blog.musicbusinessradio.com........2007-06-11

There is a great interview with Charlie, which talks about his experience in the music business, as well as making this album, available free at http://blog.musicbusinessradio.com/. They also have some video footage posted.

As for the album, you are correct that his VOICE isn't what it was, but this man has lived as an artist, which you'll hear on the interview, and the passion and spirit is what makes this album great. This isn't a technical album, but one filled with emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie can still get it done!.......2007-05-07

This is a superb album, and those who love Bluegrass and/or country music will immediately appreciate it. Charlie has aged, and his voice doeen't have the power it once did. But it this is an opportunity to obtain a new take on old songs, recorded with state of the art equipment. Older listeners may prefer the original recordings of the songs, but the exposure this new release brings may draw younger listeners who have not had the opportunity to learn of this great artist. I highly recommend this album!

5 out of 5 stars The Old Goat.......2007-04-11

Hmmm...very tasty style...full of longing and regret...[sigh]...reminded me of lonely nights in the forties in the outback of north Louisiana...hmmm...I need to sit down.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, great message.......2007-04-10

I never heard of Charlie Louvin until hearing a piece on him on NPR radio. Once I got this CD I couldn't help but tap my feet and sing along. "Atomic Power" was stuck in my head for a week.

It's sort of like listening to your old grandfather singing at a family picnic. Not your typical country singer. He sounds aged but fun. His backup singer(s) are more than complemetary. I was surprised at how much I liked this CD. I am usually not a huge fan of country music, but Louvin is contageous and inspirational

4 out of 5 stars Ditto the first review, but "Ira"?.......2007-02-27

I'm on my second listen and I agree with almost everything Sound/Word Enthusiast has to say in the first review. It's a shame about the production, because Charlie's voice is truly awesome, worn into a groove in the best possible sense, terrific relaxed phrasing. The guest stars might have been cool if it had been produced like John Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves" -- simple duet harmonies with no fuss. But there's way too much fuss here. Only George Jones, Bobby Bare, and Tom T. Hall really come off well, because they're real country. I like Will Oldham and Jeff Tweedy, but they ain't got the chops, and I have nothing but respect for Elvis Costello, who can truly sing, but he just doesn't fit in either.

I read an interview where Charlie says two things I find totally appropriate. First, that he kept telling them he'd drive down to Nashville and sing with the guest stars but they never asked him (!). And you can see the result -- most of the second voices sound totally patched in, like cameos in a bad movie. Second, he can't understand why they wanted that feedback sound on "Great Atomic Power." Thought it was a mistake, but Nevers said no, we wanted it that way. Well, Charlie's right -- it sounds like a mistake. Why does Charlie Louvin need indie guest stars and feedback?

That said, I like imperfect albums and this one is kind of fun to engage with and be annoyed by -- you can hear the album it should have been. And then there's "Ira," which gets everything right -- it's touching, beautifully sung, a wonderful tribute to his brother. "You had a way with writing music from the heart / Your voice is strong even though you're gone, 'cause I still hear your part" ... gives me chills. I think the indie stuff doesn't mix for precisely the reason "Ira" is so great -- it's perfectly sincere in a way modern music just isn't and can't be. Anyway, if the whole album had been like "Ira," it'd be five stars plus for sure.

Album Description

With great success and momentum going before them, the David Crowder Band began the process of writing and recording their newest release, Illuminate. Having performed 251 concerts in 2002 (yet only missing 11 Sundays at University Baptist Church), Crowder says that the band was able to truly interact with its fans, consequently learning where the connections are: "We realized that, musically, their tastes were similar to ours. Just because a record is in a store doesn't mean they'll get it. Our music made sense to them. We were nervous about how the interaction would be. But, in between records, we kept getting reaffirmed that the fans really understood what we were about...that what we do is useful and significant in other people's lives. It helped us relax. It made us want to make music."

David Crowder has never been a disciplined, let's-sit-down-and-write-now kind of songwriter. "Songs come in spurts," he explains. "I am an inspirational writer. The moment will hit and I know I better find a pen and paper. There is a lot of intentionality behind my songwriting." And so it happened with the songs of Illuminate. Back in Waco, a writing spurt began as Crowder was having conversations at church about the relationships between the physics of light and Scripture. "It was definitely a 'head to heart' kind of experience when the songs came out," he says. Who knew that science would inspire worship?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Masterpiece.......2007-06-05

I may not be the first to mention this, but this album greatly strengthened my relationship with Jesus Christ. I've always been a strong believer, but this music just takes me to new heights in my spiritual journey. Just when I thought "Illuminate" was as good as it gets, Crowder produces "A Collison" and captivates me once again.

"Wholly Yours" is just about the most profound song that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Even the interludes have deep meanings to bridge the gap and complete the album.

The album is a true, meaningful journey of worship and praise. It is an experience that you won't be able to discover anywhere else. DCB has changed me individually and I'm so much better for it. Believe me, you will never want to take this one out of your CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-12

Every cut on this CD is wonderful. There is a great variation of tempo throughout the album. I especially like Here is our King. Be more Quiet is simply haunting. Usually I don't enjoy bluegrass but I really thought I saw the Light hit just the right note

5 out of 5 stars Why I listen to it over and over.......2007-01-28

If you've seen David Crowder in concert, you will want to buy this CD. David can get 'out there' with his techno sound, but this is not like that - it's 'real' sounding. David Crowder has an awesome voice and his lyrics are pure worship, if not directly from the Bible itself. You'll find yourself singing along. The only fault I noted was 'odd' breaks between some of the songs, but it's only distracting the first time you listen to it. There's really no cut on this CD that I don't like.

5 out of 5 stars Unique!.......2007-01-10

David Crowder strikes me as someone who would be fun to know: he seems smart, committed to Christ, and creative in the extreme. This album is fun to listen to, and is definitely unique!

5 out of 5 stars I Wish it Went to 10 Stars!.......2007-01-10

This album is WOW! thats all there is to say...it so great and so sincere. You can really connect to the cd. You should definitely consider buying Illuminate too! Its even better!

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-04-16

This album is Stephen Stills at his best. It is a great mix of different styles, even to the point where the album seems somewhat fragemented. There is a hearty display of the blues, country, bluegrass, and a Latin American touch. The countryish elements are nicely blended with the Latin American slant that is so often present in Stills' music. His time in Panama truly had influence on his music. The album shows a great deal of emotion and is great musically. I think the best song on this album is "Jonny's Garden".

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Stills at his best.......2007-03-05

This is one of the greatest albums that Stills ever did. The man is a musical genius. In my opinion this one of the best albums of the seventies.

4 out of 5 stars an extremely satisfying album........2007-02-10

early 70's country/folk/rock is anathema to some, i understand. but i don't know why this is so. what's wrong with beautiful songwriting and song execution? this is an extremely satisfying album for the ears. a wide range of moods and textures are covered over the course of the recording without a false step along the way. i highly recommend this for all fans of country-rock.

5 out of 5 stars Dare I say it?.......2006-12-27

This may be one of the top five greatest albums of all time. Granted, it did take me about 3 listens to arrive at this decision, just because I was used to the CSN(Y)sound. Great country flare with all the staple elements of legit rock. This album saw Stills at the peak of his voice, songwriting, and musical chops all at the same time. I will say this is more of a masculine album, though, so you may not find many female CSN fans liking it so much. Stills wah pedal solo in "The Treasure" was alone worth the price of admission.

Treat yourself to the sweet harmonies of the Everly Brothers, with a CD that has been remastered to underscore their pure sound. Played this for my musician son in law who was not familiar with their music and he is so impressed. All the hits are here, sounding better than ever. An outstanding addition to your collection --

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Everly Brothers album you will ever need, .......2007-01-10

Long ago in californialand, i heard the last everly brothers "hit", on the wings of a nightingale, 1 time and i knew I HAD to have it. Took me about 20 years to find it, in this album. If you really like good music, with tight harmonies, good guitar work, words you can understand, a little bit of country and early rock to the still bitchin, fresh, updated sound of nightingale, then STOP RIGHT HERE and get this album. Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars Everly Brothers, best of.......2007-01-09

The Millennium collection seems to have the songs I always want from a group or artist. The quality of the sound is there everytime. As the local music stores disappear it is good to be able to trust a system like this as I replace much of my vinyl for a CD collection. This CD gives me what I want for the Everly Brothers in one purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-04-01

Any fan who appreciates the Everly Brothers has to have
this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion
of their last hit, after more than 20 years had passed since
their previous one.
After the team reunited, one of their biggest fans wrote
a song especially for them. Paul McCartney wrote "Wings of
a Nightingale" for them, and it is a truly beautiful song
that displays their harmony at its best, and the song is
not usually found on other collections.
Get the best of all their classic early hits, plus this
last hit.
A must have for any fan.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Majestic, Beautiful.......2007-07-09

The score for 'The Shawshank Redemption' was the first Thomas Newman score I ever heard, and it remains one of my favorites now, many years later.

I remember seeing the movie (I was one of the few who saw it in the theatre on its original run), and early on when the first aerial shots of Shawshank Prison appear onscreen, accompanied by the 'Stoic Theme' from the score, I felt that the movie had found its voice. As much as Morgan Freeman's melodious narration drives the story of the film, Newman's music drive the emotional heart from beginning to end.

The music is beautiful to listen to by itself -- haunting and majestic where it needs to be, but also more intimate and soft in its quieter moments. It never goes over the top with its sentimentality or dramatic tone, relying on subtle cues to convey menace, or friendship, or danger, and in the end, hope.

Like all good music for film should (a goal rarely realized), Newman's score conveys the message of the movie perfectly. It accompanies the events on screen, but it also enhances them, adds just the right tone, and really brings it to the heart of the viewer. It is safe to say that the film would not have been the same without such an accomplished and thoughtful score. In this case, it is even more true than usual -- the score is what helps to make the film so great, and with different music, the film itself would be lessened.

Thomas Newman has built a career out of creating music that is unique and moving, somehow always putting his signature on it without ever regurgitating themes or reusing the same ideas for different films. Even in such a distinguished body of work, filled with great music that moves the soul, Newman's score for 'The Shawshank Redemption' remains, fittingly, a shining moment.

5 out of 5 stars Shawshank Sountrack.......2007-05-13

The film is fabulous and was in need of a brilliant soundtrack to capture the incredibly painful journey of Andy Dufresne. Who can manage such a task? Why, Thomas Newman of course! Newman carefully navigates Andy's world with gentle artist's touch. Worth adding to your collection!

Newman has really made a nice soundtrack here. Pieces like "Brooks Was Here" and "Compass and Guns" may have very similiar sounds/styles, but they serve to give the movie the deep somberness that can move you.

I highly recommend this one

4 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite film & score.......2006-06-20

This is probably my all-time favorite film, mainly because director Frank Darabont is an absolutely incredible storyteller (see also "The Green Mile" and "The Majestic").

The film wouldn't be nearly as powerful without this amazing soundtrack. The disc is great from start to finish, but my two favorite tracks on the CD are taken from (what I believe) are the two most emotional scenes in the whole movie: Andy tells Red about his dream of "Zihuantenejo"; and the flashback which shows how Andy pulled off his risky escape, thus the "Shawshank Redemption."

4 out of 5 stars Shawshank Redemption Review.......2006-03-18

Loved the movie and now I have the soundtrack to remember the parts of the movie I liked best-like when the "italian ladies sing".
