Album Description
Kenny Wayne Shepherd's reverence for his musical roots are center-stage on Ten Days Out...Blues From The Backroads, a CD+DVD package that features the guitarslinger and Double Trouble rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton performing with some of the greatest blues players of our time as well as lesser-known but historically significant bluesmen. Traveling to their hometowns to record everywhere from juke joints to front porches, from New Orleans to Kansas, Shepherd celebrates and becomes part of blues history with Ten Days Out...Blues From The Backroads.
Amazon.com
This "back-to-the-roots" road-trip documentary CD/DVD from blues-rocking guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd can be viewed in two ways--it's either the culmination of a long-held desire to promote and play with some unheralded blues veterans before they pass away (as six had already done since the recording was made, 2½ years before its early 2007 release) or a way to regain the blues audience Shepherd all but alienated on his artistically and commercially disappointing 2004 hard-rock release, The Place You're In. Ultimately, it succeeds on both accounts. Regardless of the project's inspiration, the results by and large justify whatever the means might have been to get this show on the road--literally and figuratively. Shepherd hit the highway for a week and a half along with producer Jerry Harrison (ex-Talking Heads), a portable studio, and backup musicians including the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. He searched out blues artists both obscure (the late guitarist Etta Baker, who plays in her kitchen, is a highlight) and better known (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and B.B. King) for a series of acoustic and electric jams, all of which feature Shepherd--who, to his credit, generally keeps his hot-dogging tendencies in check. A closing concert featuring members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands never quite generates the heat it should, but country bluesmen Cootie Stark, Neil Pattman, and harmonica ace Jerry "Boogie" McCain provide plenty of sparks. Shepherd seems sincere enough, but the real stars are the ageing musicians who have maintained their chops and intensity through a lifetime of performing music that clearly comes from the soul. --Hal Horowitz

Fantastic........2007-07-18
Maybe it's the rythm section as well, but Kenny adds another layer to these old blues guys. I would like to see a lot more of these types of CDs before we lose some of this great music. Since the recording and the release, 5 of the players had died. What a shame for the loss, but thanks Kenny and company for exposing them to a greater audience. They all deserved it.
Blues greats, best of blues artists.......2007-07-07
Wonderful DVD/CD chronicling major historic blues artists - one of a kind album - a 'must have' for the blues enthusiast. Highly recommend!
Outstanding.......2007-07-04
I bought this CD/DVD AFTER seeing KWS in concert at Viejas here
in San Diego. What a treat to see and hear Pinetop Perkins and
Hubert Sumlin among others! My estimation of KWS as a performer
and good guy increased by a quantum leap after seeing the show.
He may be one the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and he
respectfully kept that fiece talent in check when the others were
stepping out. He seems a real gentleman as well as lover of the
music and the people.
The package is excellent, a real gem. The interviews and background
materials are touching, especially of the folks that have since passed.
BUY THIS CD. THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
Great!.......2007-07-04
This is actually my second purchase of this item. When I purchased one for myself and realized how good it was, I purchsed one as a gift for a friend. Highly recommend for anyone who loves the blues.
As real as you can get.......2007-06-27
I stumbled on this by accident while looking for another blues cd (big blues fan). I read about how Kenny Wayne Sheperd wanted to connect with these old blues pioneers and it sounded like it might be worth a try.He and his crew have put together one of the most entertaining documentories
I have ever seen. The cd is fantastic as well with track after track of pure blues. If you are a blues fan this DVD/CD combo is a must. You won't be disappointed.

Amazon.com essential recording
The success of her first international hit, Watermark, confirmed Enya as less a singer or songwriter than a sonic architect: working with producer Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan, the classically-trained pianist built vaulting cathedrals of sound, framed by luminous piano, shimmering synthesizer orchestrations, and, above all, the seemingly infinite layers of vocal harmonies she plied on every song. The deeply romantic Celtic pop on its 1991 successor, Shepherd Moons, sustains the same spectrum of hushed reverie and surging, rhapsodic releases, as well as its mix of ballads, floating midtempo pieces, and forays into Celtic and Latin--and it's every bit as seductive. The terminally hip will sneer, but it's no accident that "Caribbean Blue," the best known song here, managed to sneak onto modern rock, top 40, "adult alternative" and public radio playlists. --Sam Sutherland

GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-09
SHE HAS SUCH SOFT MUSIC AND I LOVE IT IT JUST HELPS ME TO RELAXE.
I HAVE A LOT OF STRESS IN MY LIFE AND THIS HELPS TO GET AWAY FROM IT FOR A WHILE
Calming.......2007-01-05
I play this in the car all the time. It is a definite antidote to frustrating traffic jams.
None better.......2006-11-03
The zenith of Enya's work. Ethereal and hauntingly beautiful. Marble Halls alone is worth the CD price.
Simply Beautiful!.......2006-10-19
Enya's cover albums are like a work of art in itself. Then once you listen, you can't imagine how beautiful and angelic of a voice. This compact disc was one of many. You feel like sailing away her to voice when you hear Caribbean Blue and other other songs on this disc. There isn't one song that I could pick but all of them. I recommend this collection as a must have for Enya fans everywhere. She will win you over with her soothing voice and spirituality. I always feel more energized listening to her music than getting a power bar.
Rainbow of sounds and pleasure.......2006-06-17
Shepherd moons was my first introduction to Enya back in 1991. Her style and haunting voice rooted themselves in my soul ever since then and the song called Caribbean Blue still stops me in my tracks everything I have the pleasure of hearing it. It must be one of my favorite musical pieces ever for you see blue in front of your eyes as you hear it, the Atlantic waves on a beach at night or with sun light shining through like columns of light all the way down till they disappear to the abyss. Her music has the rare gift of powerful visuals they project in the listener.
New Age is so easy to like, with its non threatening characteristics it can be enjoyed at any time of day or in any mood. Shepherd Moons is one of Enya's best compilations and probably most popular among people who are loosely familiar with her. This CD is romantic in a mysteriously beautiful way, its not cloying and cheesy but both soft and powerful. The lovely thing about this album is all the different types of Enyas music you get. There are the soft ballads, the sultry pieces and deep catchy tunes, the sensual ancient Latin songs, and earthy tracks such as Book of Days That makes you feel as if on a galloping on a horse through secret passages and forests.
I absolutely love this CD, and honestly I haven't written a review of it in the past fifteen years but putting it on two days ago really enchanted me and I'm still under awe of this glorious CD to the point where I had to share some of my adoration for it.

It's not hard to understand the appeal of Kenny Wayne Shepherd, currently being hailed as the heir to Stevie Ray Vaughan. He's young (an increasing rarity in blues and blues-related genres), he writes catchy songs, and his "Blue on Black" is widely played on rock radio. Trouble Is . . . is an enjoyable listen, from rockers like "Slow Ride" and "Chase the Rainbow," to swingy mid-tempo songs like "True Lies" and "(Long) Gone," to slower almost-ballads such as "Nothing to Do with Love" and the all-pervasive "Blue on Black". Expect to start hearing "I Found Love (When I Found You)" at high school proms and homecoming dances. It remains to be seen how Shepherd will develop, but he's among the most promising young guitarists out there today. -- Genevieve Williams

Very Good Stuff.......2007-05-25
Kenny Wayne continues to record very good music. Noah Hunt's vocals are awesome. Usually like only one or two songs on any cd...I like them all on 'Trouble Is".
Outstandingly Awesome.......2006-09-17
This CD is just great. Kenny can play an amazing guitar. I really like Noah Hunt's voice and he makes the songs that much better. Every song is a good listen. Most people know about Blue On Black, but all the songs are good here.
disappointment.......2006-09-02
The music wasn't bad, however the vocals are a MAJOR disappointment. I kept expecting something better with each song. Then I realized the problem; there was no raw feelings conveyed, no personality, no life. You can't sing blues songs with a polished pop voice.
One of his better CD's.......2006-07-01
Solid flowing cd.....great tones love his playing and singing.
Didn't care for his other cd's as much I'm going with 5 on this one
Because he's not Stevie Ray he sucks?.......2005-09-20
I think KWS has a wonderful gift of playing the blues with passion and intensity. No he is not Stevie Ray and how in the hell are you going to say he sucks because he isn't? And Stevie Ray is no John Petrucci or Al Dimeaola so I guess he sucks as well. Come on people, stop being such music snobs. I highly recommend it.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
spiritual americana.......2007-01-06
I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!
Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11
Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.
Superb .......2006-08-07
This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.
Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07
My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.
These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.
Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08
I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Wow! What a FIRST album....where does he go from here?.......2007-05-31
Kenny Wayne Shepherd, in his first CD, is amazing. There will be the inevitable comparisons to Stevie Ray Vaughan (and perhaps Jonny Lang), but the tone and style of his super guitar playing are different than SRV. (Note that I did not say better than....) There is a wide range of SRV style blues and playing along with acoustic, slide and such. I am glad that I bought this thoroughly enjoyable CD and can recommend it to all who like electric guitar blues, Delta blues and more!
Enjoyable Rockin' Rhythm and Blues.......2007-05-16
Shepherd is reminiscent of the great Stevie Ray Vaughan, and therefore makes Stevie's fans yearn for the real deal. This makes a review by a confirmed SRV fan somewhat suspect and potentially unfair to Kenny Wayne, who is an accomplished blues guitarist - just not in Vaughan's class.
ledbetter heights.......2007-03-10
This is a great bunch of music; very addicting. Play it at least once a day.
Great Album.......2006-09-28
The two opening cuts are great! Deja Voodoo sold me on this album it's self. Kenny was a lot younger at this time, and you can tell he was still trying to find his identity as a picker (he found it on the Live On album IMO).
Some have criticized him for ripping off Pearl Jam, and I'll be honest...I think While We Cry is definitely derived from Pearl jam's "Yellow Ledbetter." But...neither Gossard nor McCready could play what Shepherd played on this tune. I agree that Shepherd shouldn't have taken credit for this song as being his own, but he smokes on this tune more than Pearl Jam could ever hope to. At the end of the day, I don't think KWS will ever be remembered for this tune anyway, as most people know him for Blue On Black, but by all means...Live On is an exceptional album that needs to be heard by anyone who knows about Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
This album is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone who likes guitar driven blues.
BUY IT!.......2005-09-19
You will love every song on this album. It could be a greatest hits, except I don't beleive we've seen all the greatest from Kenny...yet. He plays, you listen, pure perfection!

John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19
This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.
Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20
I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-03
I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.
To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30
I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.
The Best.......2005-04-29
The John Rutter Collection in my opinion is one of the finest and most perfect works I've ever heard. The Cambridge Singers demonstrates the best vocal discipline and style of any vocal group in the world.

Never mess with a good thing; Kenny Wayne Shepherd certainly hasn't. There's no appreciable stylistic difference between Live On and its predecessors, Trouble Is... and Ledbetter Heights, except that Shepherd's guitar work here sounds more assured. All of the other usual ingredients are present--a full, crunchy guitar sound, a tight rhythm section, mature-sounding vocals from Noah Hunt, and the usual assortment of uptempo rockers and slower, sweeter numbers. If Shepherd seems to be edging closer to the rock side of the blues-rock genre, it's hardly surprising given that's where he's had his greatest success. And if the result doesn't seem to quite transcend genre boundaries, it is, at least, a high-octane, energetic effort. --Genevieve Williams

Second copy.......2006-07-05
I really love this CD. It goes everywhere with me the house, the car, work and parties. I've carried it around so many places and played it so much that it developed a scratch that I couldn't get out! That's why I had to have a second copy! I can't do without Kenny!
Not as bluesy as his earlier albums........2006-02-03
I am a huge fan of Kenny Wayne Shepherd. But I was disappointed in "Live On." It's more hard rock than blues. Naturally, it's all a matter of personal taste. If you like more of a hard sound, you may like this. But it's quite a departure from his earlier work.
Live On is an enticing blend of Blues/Rock.......2004-10-06
If you like guitar driven blues with a twist of classic rock than you'll love this album. Kenny's playing is excellant and unlike other critics I think the vocals are fine for this genre. Excellant rocked up version of Oh Well is one of many highlights. In 2 Deep and Last Goodbye are great songs. Was,Shotgun Blues and You Should Know Better do not dissapoint. All told 14 tracks for your pleasure. There are those of us that think KWS, Joe Bonamassa and Rob Tognoni are carrying the blues/rock-classic rock torch. The sad part is how few realize how great a job they are doing. If you like these three then check out Bill Perry, Smokin' Joe Kubek and Gary Moore.
HOLY MACKEREL!!!.......2004-06-29
This guy can jam!. Buy his CD's!! If you get the chance to see him and his band live GO!!! - a true talent. I am so thankful that he is making this music as there are not too many out there. I was devasted when we lost Stevie Ray Vaughn. Now look, so young Kenny Wayne Shepherd, so gifted and devoted to the guitar...just think of how awesome he could become. LIVE ON Kenny Wayne, you are totally fantastic!! I dance like a maniac to all of your CD's when no one is watching!!! ;)
Live On - Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band.......2004-06-25
This release, Kenny's third, finds him leaning towards the rock side of things. It seems as if Kenny is starting to become more mature on this record, playing more economically than on the first two cds, "Ledbetter Heights" and "Trouble Is...". Noah Hunt's vocals are very good on this record also. He makes the transition well from hard rockers like "In 2 Deep" to slower numbers like "Last Goodbye" to blues wailers like "Shotgun Blues". This whole record kicks from top to bottom; every song is great. People who say he still sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughan on this cd I don't agree with. Honestly, can anyone imagine Stevie doing a song like "In 2 Deep"? I think Kenny's songwriting and guitar playing drastically improved on this record. Maybe now he's finally ready to step out of Stevie Ray's shadow when his new album drops in the first week of September. Highlights are the hard rocking "In 2 Deep", the Skynyrd-meets-Robert Johnson "Was", the ballad "Last Goodbye" and the absolutely beautiful, Grammy-nominated "Electric Lullaby".

Outstanding.......2007-01-12
-gave this as a Christmas gift to my brother-in-law, a church musician. He has listened over & over & thinks it is really outstanding. Thank you!
The heavens are telling.......2005-10-21
This is a very great chorus, and one of Haydn's best as far as i am concerned. The pace, grandness and spirit of the piece all conjure in one's imagination the majesty of heaven, and God's throne. I cannot help but be moved to praise the God of the heavens and the earth.

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing.......2004-11-22
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I mostly listen to rock and roll; but the way my uncle, and now I, play this thing, it is rock and roll from another era!!!
Sir Robert with ASO and Chorus at their Best!.......2003-11-16
After Mr Shaw spent many years in NYC and Cleveland with RCA Red Label,he came into Atlanta for a big change! Soon he switched to TELARC DIGITAL! I still Joyfully remember our Recording of the Christmas Nativity in Dec of 1975! Sir Robert, conducting with earphones encasing his head shouted: "Stop the taping, there is some Darn Sizzling noise in those Lights!" We may have not heard the word "Damn" lights, that he employed at times!
On both this newer release of TELARC and the older Recording of The Christmas Nativity, there are Bach's Chorale, Break Forth, Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass, Handel's Hallelujah! Plus the exquisite, Shepherds's Farewell to the Holy Family of Berlioz's The Infant Christ!
Those who may not be familiar with Berlioz from both recordings, will be richly rewarded by hearing them plus the Rex Tremendae from Berlioz''s Requiem and the other Kyrie from the Bach B-Minor! Absolutely, no other Christmas Music can ever approach these two splendid recordings, which are the basis of the ASO celebrating every Christmas with "Robert Shaw in the Spirit!"

Celestial melodies.......2001-05-27
No matter what mood you are in, the gorgeous chorals will draft you through the paths of holiness, and you will find yourself situated in the Elysium, land of eternal joy, yet you are far from dead. The past grief, weariness, and worries will fade and torture your soul no more. You are set free.
Unfortunately, Nobody can be told what this heavenly experience is like. You have to listen to it yourself.

Beautiful.......2007-06-14
This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.
A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19
It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.
This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05
However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!
every good adjective .......2005-08-06
This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.
Fabulous!.......2005-05-29
The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!
