This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch. Non-Whitman-heads may find the entire recording a bore, though. - -Barbara Eisner Bayer

A labor of love, but the songs aren't first rate.......2006-12-31
As a concept album, Hampson's 1997 tribute to Walt Whitman earned critical praise for its sensitivity and musicality. There's no doubt that the singer is in rare form here--it would be hard to imagine any of this repertoire better sung. He isn't a good reciter of poetry in the four spoken tracks. The major drawback, however, is that none of these songs are close to being masterpieces, and quite a few are decidedly minor. The avid listener can cncentrate on the poetry instead of the music, I suppose--Hampson's enunciation is crystal clear--but after six or seven items couched in the same rather timid Anglo-American art song form, this lavor of love becomes rather taxing as a listening experience. Taken a few at a time, however, these are intriguing choices that combine into a unqiue recital.
Couldn't find another place to ask, thus this line........1999-02-03
Am looking for the bugle calls commonly used when raising the flag and lowering it. Specifically, I am looking for "To the Colors" and "Retreat" in bugle calls. Do you have it?

A Creative Programming Idea Gone Awry.......2003-10-01
The notion behind the program on this CD was a wonderful one. As a pendant to a new song cycle by Warren M. Swenson set to Civil War poems by Walt Whitmen, George Shirley, tenor, and William Bolcom, pianist, record eleven popular songs from the period surrounding the Civil War including familiar favorites as 'Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' and some rare songs like the Creole folk song 'Michieu Banjo' and Henry Russell's 'The Maniac.' But there are two things wrong with the final product. First, the song cycle of twelve songs, although set to stirring, evocative poetry, is pedestrian and in a pale faux-Ives style. Second, and sad to hear, is the deterioration of the nearly 70-year-old Shirley's once glorious voice. He was, in his day, an intelligent singer with a beautiful voice that he could use to do just about anything he wished. I remember a riveting 'Salome' Herod only ten years or so ago. He still sings with immaculate musicianship and intelligence and his accompanist, the redoubtable composer/pianist William Bolcom gives him formidable support, but the voice splays and wobbles under pressure and it becomes painful to listen to it.
The booklet notes and recorded sound are exemplary.
But my advice is to avoid this issue unless you really want to hear Swenson's songs; this is likely to be their only recording.

Angel South, Swamp doggy dog: one of the best cd's ever!.......2003-07-27
I picked up this cd earlier this year, I have over 300 cd's, and this one is probably my favorite! Once I got this album, I've listened to it more than any other album I have! I bring it with me on all my trips! Angel plays great gituar, and the Chorus's of all the songs are very catchy! After one listen, I was hooked! If you like great blues music, and aren't offended by offensive language, you'll love this cd. I reccomend it very much to everyone!
Comedy blues!.......2003-05-03
I thought this CD was pretty funny. There's a bunch of comedy here set to pretty driving blues music. I'm a fan.

Who ever wrote the 2 reviews for this CD must have been on the payroll or a relative of mr.south. This is rubbish no matter how you look at it. His guitar playing is paltry and about as manufactured as it gets. If there is talent it is well hidden. The SONGS??? mercilessly thrash most blues cliches without anything original added. If the suspect lyrics attract you, don't bother. If BUTT and CHEEK get your juices flowing, by all means lash out on this one. This is RED NECK BLUES, dumbbed down to an almost obnoxious level. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
