Editorial Reviews

Rodd McLeod, July 14, 1999
Already obscured by unruly curls and dark sunglasses, guitarist Chris Crigoroff began his Sunday night set by asking, "Could we dim the lights? ... Quite a bit." Then, looking like two Howard Sterns quaking gently on a darkened stage, he and bassist Joe Adducci slowly picked out the title song of their 1994 record, Frozen. Ensconced in shadows, Crigoroff purposefully twanged his acoustic and Adducci uncorked wavering boomlets from his bass as a mood of midnight lament settled over the room. "It's hard enough to dry an ocean," Grigoroff bayed sadly, "Why won't you stay?"

When the song was finished, he pointed at the last remaining spotlight and said, "I'm not sure I like that, either."

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Souled American began as an organic country rock quartet in 1987. By 1990, they'd released three records on the now-dissolved Rough Trade label (Fe, Flubber, Around the Horn). Soon, Souled American moved to Chicago and became less popular as their records became lovelier and more eccentric. Their next three albums were released in Europe (available only by mail order in the U.S.) and as the alternative country movement gathered steam in America, they seemed to disappear completely. Eventually, rabid underground fandom intervened; all six records have been re-released since last year, on three independent labels (Checkered Past, Catamount, Tumult). At New York's Knitting Factory on July 11, the band, now a duo, played several songs that will appear on their next record.

Taking an awfully long time to tune between songs, Crigoroff and Adducci performed like two guys picking and strumming for old friends in their living room. Bottles of Budweiser littered the stage, the snare drum from the previous band buzzed during the quiet songs and the monitors never quite worked properly. Audience members shouted out requests -- all of which were honored -- and several indescribable moments of warped beauty unfolded along the way during the slowest show this writer has ever witnessed.

Relying on propulsive strumming, Adducci's songs drove harder than Crigoroff's plucked-string laments, but the bassist was at his best when he laced the bucolic songs with electronic effects -- reverbs and echoes on electric guitar and bass that sounded not futuristic but naturalistic. On a new song called "Libertyville," Adducci's guitar echoed as if through a wooded, moonlit valley while Crigoroff sang, "Hey man, your eyes fixed to the ground / Are you lost? or have you found /Another way?"

By this time, people were up and leaving, deserting Souled American in the midst of a passionate, unique performance. The band seemed not to care. When the folks who stuck around unstacked chairs from the corner and sat down in front of the stage, Crigoroff acknowledged them, saying, "We got a living room thing goin' here. I can dig that." Adducci played "One's Closest," a pretty cowboy waltz slated for the upcoming album, and Crigoroff sang "Souvenir," a song by his hero John Prine that includes the spare poetry, "Broken hearts, dirty windows / Make life difficult to see."

Souled American creates about as broken-hearted music as one can find, not destined for much popularity in the Roaring Nineties. To the contrary, songs like "Six Feet of Snow" (from Around the Horn) would fit better on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music than on VH-1's Pre-Millennial Power Ballads. So what. When Chris Crigoroff reaches down into his George Jones-style lower register to tell about "Six feet of snow / comin' through my radio," he's mining the marrow of country music in a way that Nashville city-slickers never could.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly underrated rock band.......2006-11-11

It's hard to write a review for Sahb because the only people reading it probably know what I'm talking about.I feel the album "Next" is one of the best obscure albums of all time. There is not a bad cut on the album. Framed is also an excellent album. The lyrics on both albums can get a bit racy, don't recommend it to kids, but with a song like "Gang Bang" one should already know that.If you like good rock'n'roll with a bit of comic naughtiness this cd package provides that. Any Alex Harvey fan has to have these two cds.

4 out of 5 stars Let them be your swampsnake.......2006-02-03

I heard Swampsnake on satellite radio (Deep Tracks, highly recommended) and had to get it. I never heard a song from this band until I received these cd's.

So far I think the first disk is fair. The liner notes say they only spent 6 days recording this album. It sounds competent but it's entirely stripped down with no overdubs. It sounds like they plugged in and started recording. Despite that, there are 3 songs on here I like and I'll probably like the others the more I listen to it.

The second disk is great. They used the same producer that produced Sweet's song Ballroom Blitz to produce the album. He adds just enough gloss to give it a glam sound compared to the first disk without taking anything away.

Looking back, I wish I would have ordered it used or maybe from the UK Amazon to save some money. Also, it took a couple weeks for it to arrive but it was worth the wait. I'm looking forward to getting the band's next two cd's.

5 out of 5 stars Mott Framed.......2004-09-24

N.E.X.T. Next. What a way to start a song. As Alex Harvey spells out the letters of the title, before leering the word into the microphone, the band breaks into a tango beat to support him, which is perhaps one of the defining moments in the career of "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" and its inspirational leader.

In 1972 Alex Harvey had reached the grand old age of 38, way too old in those hedonistic days of music to consider becoming a Pop Star. But tragically, Alex's younger brother by some ten years, Leslie, had been killed in an electrical accident during a sound check with his group "Stone the Crows" at the Top Rank in Swansea. The cause was an unearthed microphone. This tragic event spurred Alex on to have one more go at cracking the big time. At the time Alex was earning a crust in the orchestra of James Rado's iconoclastic musical 'Hair', but was persuaded by his manager, friend, and mentor Bill Fehilly, to go up to his native Glasgow, Scotland, to check out a gritty Progressive outfit called Tear Gas. The band was in the throws of giving up all dreams of stardom and going back to 'normal jobs'. They were so broke that in true Scottish tradition they had resorted to haggis hunting up the side of mountains to find sufficient nutrition to survive.

However, Alex, recognizing talent when he saw it, coerced the band to stick together and plant him in as lead singer and inspirational genius. Putting "Sensational" into the title of the band, they went into the studio and in six days had recorded their first album, released in early 1973, before starting to play live anywhere that would have them. Not surprisingly, they quickly built up a reputation of one of the hottest acts on the live circuit.

Out front was Alex himself, skin tight jeans, dirty red handkerchief hanging from his back pocket, black and white looped T-shirt, with Alex's huge head sticking out the neck (with all the creativity going on in this head, it needed to be a big one), topped off by an unruly mop of unruly jet black hair, the perfect leader.

Next to him was Zal Cleminson in a green rubber jumpsuit with cake white clown's make-up, which exaggerated his gurning face as he cut loose during the solos, and becoming a complete maniac, the perfect foil.

On the other side of the stage on bass was a man who could of made a living as an Elvis impersonator, or at least one of Elvis' bouncers Mr. Chris Glen, the perfect man to have on your side if the chips were down.

On Keyboards, as befitting this lot, was Hugh McKenna, who looked more like a university music teacher than a Rock 'n' Roll star, the perfect musical director. And keeping it in the family, on drums you had Hugh's brother, Ted, the perfect rock onto which to hoist your Rock 'n' Roll flag.

The first album was a reasonable commercial success, but for once the record company saw the potential in this group. Later that year they booked a full month for the band to record their follow up album and brought in top Glam Rock producer Phil Wainman. The results were 'Sensational'. Alex sung with such pathos you cannot help but love him. Nobody else at the time could of gotten away with singing the title track, the J. Brel tribute to European Brothels, or `Gang Bang' poking fun, of an unmentionable subject. Zal Cleminson's guitar playing throughout is nothing short of brilliant, and the band supports them note for note. All of the songs here were to stay in the band's stage act in one way or another until the end, especially 'The Faith Healer' with its throbbing Tooltelbug drone opening, which was to become the band's standard bearer and opening song. (The sight of Alex staggering to the front of the stage screaming "can I put my hands on you" used to send the audience into raptures.)

`Vambo Marble Eye' became a saga that Alex was going to take to higher plains on the live stage. Final number 'The Last Of The Teenage Idols' was inspired by an event way back in 1957, when Alex Harvey won a Daily Record organized competition to find the Scottish Tommy Steele (true - I promise!), which brings the album to a fitting rocking climax before we are lulled away by a final burst of do-wop.

In another year, "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" was the biggest touring band in Europe, quite a turn around from Haggis chasing. Unfortunately, the work load was just too much and after suffering declining health, Alex left the band in 1978, after which the band imploded. Later in 1982, Alex would die of a heart attack while on tour in Europe, a day before his 47th Birthday. Although Alex's career did not really catch fire until late, but when it finally did, it sure burned bright. If "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band" is a mystery to you, pay attention. Alex Harvey was one of the greatest ring masters to have ever strode across the field of Rock 'n' Roll. The first two "Sensational Alex Harvey Band" albums, "Framed" and "Next", have just been released as a special 2-for-1 box set, a bargain not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational Alex Harvey Band!.......2003-01-03

'Bout time somebody reissued these Seventies masterpieces.

Alex Harvey straddled the lines between a novelty act and a rock band. Too into fun for the serious glam-rock set, he assembled a hard-rocking outfit of professionals and rocked hard in an era dominated by prog-rock and bubblegum soul, and built a reputation as a fearsomely amusing live act.

His -Isobel Gowdie- song draws from Scots history for some serious weirdness. But -Next- has to be his masterpiece. The title track is actually a Jacques Brel number, sung in English: a raunchy story about a dismal experience in a military brothel. But the song for which he's perhaps best remembered is -Faith Healer-, covered by a number of acts including Recoil and the Cult: it features punning lyrics and some surprisingly intelligent and restrained use of synths, especially for the mid-70's.

In between, you get amusing and traditional rock numbers, like -Swampsnake-, -Gang Bang-, and -Giddy Up a Ding Dong-. Those who like hard and straightforward rock with a sense of humour ought to give this a try.

    3 out of 5 stars It's alright........2005-10-17

Aceyalone and Ab. Rude are two nice emcees, who try a little too hard to be "underground." They can flow but if you like this album you should buy it because it's about to be overshadowed by the A-Team out of Jersey; Hitchcock and Ransom. As far it goes, Who Framed the A-Team is hot, but if you want to hear some supreme lyracists who are about to blow...I'd say find the Hardhood Classics Mixtape, vol 1 or 2 - it kills this. Just my 2.

3 out of 5 stars I Love It When A Plan Comes Together........2001-12-25

And this one came together quite nicely. With two of the better lyricists out of los angeles in the past 10 years, this CD is a solid pickup. The slow precise rhyme style of Abstract Rude complements Ayce's rapid fire word play beutifully in this debut callab. On "Slower Traffic To The Right", by far the standout track on the CD, we get the added treat of hearing Mikah 9 (also one of L.A.'s finest,) rip into the high energy beat. This album has an underground bootleg feel to it. With songs like the title track and A.B. Baracus, the tight music production may suffer a bit in your eyes if your looking for clear sounding tracks. I recommend that you not let it deter you. This is an overall very satisfying offering from well established artists that know how to deliever.

4 out of 5 stars Nobody framed the A-Team, they are that damn good..........2000-08-05

A-Team is FRESH. The beats are very original, and the lyrics can't be faded. This unbelievable team of legendary underground mc's can't be dealt with as they will easily take a mic and rip it from the get-go. "Who Framed the A-Team?" is a very good album and even though it hasn't gotten any exposure, maybe it's good because the people who listen to commercial probably wouldn't appreciate "real hip-hop" anyway. Maybe they just don't deserve to hear good music.

5 out of 5 stars ace comes through again.......2000-06-28

aceyalone and ab.rude on the same disk, flowing together? what do y'all expect but the very best. the beats are tight. the rhymes are no joke. picking this one up while i was visiting a friend in berkeley was lucky and they were 12 of the best bones i've spent all year.

    5 out of 5 stars A-Team deserves an A..........2000-06-20

The Alpha Team have finally released their long awaited first compilation together (which took years to be re-issued onto CD, originally pressed on vinyl but pulled from underground vendors due to distribution problems). This is one awesome album and if you listen to mainstream hip-hop only, give this a shot because this is what commercial hip-hop tries to be and will never be. Aceyalone and Abstract Rude are truly some of underground hip-hop's best and are never given the respect they so rightfully deserve.

Scoring a live action/animation film can be a difficult thing. Do you mickey mouse every scene or play it straight? Silvestri does both, but mainly in a comic fashion. Lots of jazz musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as the orchestra itself provide the music and the result is a good one. For the jazz parts, Silvestri throws in a solo trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. "Maroon Logo" and "Maroon Cartoon" are 2 mickey-moused tracks, meaning that every action on screen is reflected in the music. I can't help but think back to the old Warner Bros. cartoons here. "Valiant and Valiant" and "Eddie's Theme" are 2 tracks on the slightly somber side, employing the use of the wonderful jazz musicians. "The Weasels" is amusing, while "Hungarian Rhapsody" contains the scene where Donald and Daffy Duck duel with each other on the pianos. "Judge Doom" is the most ominous track on the album, sensing evil is right around the corner. "Why Don't You Do Right" and "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" are 2 songs from the film, the former one a sultry and swinging song sung by Jessica Rabbit in the film and the latter a comically entertaining one sung by Roger Rabbit. "Jessica's Theme" is sultry, with a slightly suspect feel to it. "The Gag Factory" is one of the highlights of the album, with the orchestra shining at its best with racing brass rhythms and strings. "The Will" is a great finale track, while "Smile Darn Ya Smile/That's All Folks!" is somewhat of a goofy song with Porky Pig quoting his famous line at the end. The best track is "End Title", which brings together all of the themes in the film into a 5 minute suite. A great effort on Silvestri's part and a wonderful recording, as well as a great orchestral performance.

...and it is absolutely wonderful. Alan Silvestri is an incredible composer. I have several soundtracks from him and I'm a huge WFRR fan to boot! This soundtrack is a must have for any fan of this movie.

          5 out of 5 stars Spooky & Cool.......2004-07-12

With a guest vocal from samantha parton of The Be Good Tanyas, Kevin House is off to a fine start as a late night troubadour in a kind of Chet Baker loneliness meets Leonard Cohen kind of intimacy. Wonderful early morning acoustic guitar, theremin and other intriguing sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Leonard Cohen meets Chet baker.......2004-07-12

fantastic late night sounds of acoustic guitar, theremin, stand up bass and the light breathy vocals of Kevin House. A certain sadness like Chet Baker and warmth like Leonard Cohen and fragility like Nick drake. Very good. PLUS - guest vocal by Samantha Parton of The Be Good Tanyas!
