After producing groundbreaking albums for, and often with, Peter Gabriel, U2, Robbie Robertson, and the Neville Brothers, Daniel Lanois's self-produced debut album proved at once familiar in its thick, swampy sonics and startling in its pared-down, intimate scale. Lanois's song cycle is steeped in the francophone cultures both of his Québécois heritage and of his adopted New Orleans home, mixing English and French as easily as Lanois himself alternates from soulful croon to plainer folkiness. Populated with rural characters, his detailed stories evoke a lost time through two-step acoustic love songs, narrative ballads, and a hushed, propulsive prayer; "The Maker" features a ghostly, restrained harmony vocal by Aaron Neville. My stars say enough, this CD never fails to create a better image each time I listen to it. I have all his CDs and this one holds a place at the top with a couple of his other projects. I wish he would work with more acts as a producer, his sound is so characterisic. Love to hear what he could do with The Tragically Hip, R.E.M, Leonard Cohen and a hundred more acts. You can judge a person by the company he keeps, oh what company Lanois brings to this project:

What can I add that hasn't already been said here? This is my favourite album of all time, and I know how loosely these accolades can be thrown around. Acadie has folk roots and a crystaline, unique honesty - it is melodic, bluesy, perfectly produced and yet somehow human and imperfect. You're always chasing it, tantalised by something you can't quite put your finger on. At the same time it is experimental and addictive. The album has a selflessness that gives it a warm spiritual quality. Quite simply, it's one of music's finest minds letting us in with powerful, spirtual, haunted songs. Everyone will have their favourites on this CD - for me, I cannot look past The Maker or St Anne's Gold. All of Lanois' work is worth a look but he is yet to top this. A masterpiece.

holds up like little else.......2005-03-11

Maybe I am just adding to the chorus...but this is one of the best, most enduring albums I've ever heard. I first started listening to it in 1990, my girlfriend's copy, then bought the CD a few years after we split up & was blown away once again. This morning I am listening as iTunes rips it to mp3 & every song still sounds fresh and enchanting. Pure brilliance. _For the Beauty of Wynona_ was a letdown for me after this, & I haven't listened to the other one. But I could listen to _Acadia_ day after day and never tire of it.

The genius producer.......2004-10-20

'Arcadie', to my ears, is easily the most attractive, the most stylish of Lanoise's three outings. This may be the result, at the time, of him working more surely within his vocal limits. His is not an unexpressive voice, but it has little of the warmth or expansiveness that he imbues in his soundscapes. And here, when reflecting on domesticity and fatherhood, the voice is pitched just right. It is quite possible to be transported by his music without giving much attention to his singing. This might be going too far, and I'm grateful that he brought this music into existence. A composite disc from the three would be impressive. As it stands, Lanoise will be best enjoyed as the genius producer of many fine albumns; U2, Dylan, Emmy Lou, Robbie Robertson,The Neville's, 'Yellow Moon', and may the list continue.

Acadie.......2004-08-14

This is by far the best CD I've ever owned. It's haunting, it's full of vivid memories I can relate to seeing how Jolie Louise was written about a city less than 5 minutes from my house. This album has pulled me out of the deepest darkest moments life throws unexpectedly at you. As eerie as it sounds, this will be the CD playing at my funeral whenever that day should come. That's not to say this is funeral music by any means of the imagination, I want it played because it invokes so many emotions and inspirations.

Acadia, blessed spirit of the waters..........2007-05-19

This is an unusual disc - baroque specialist Suzie LeBlanc has collected some Acadian songs that speak of waters and the shores beside the sea. Not only is the repertoire unique, but Suzie LeBlanc's singing is luminous, haunting and utterly exquisite. Her voice - a lyric shining soprano of great purity used in such a way that one hears every nuance of superbly articulated emotion - is a blessing. Lovers of early music will be familiar with her singing of Vivaldi, Rossi, Mouline, Strozzi, etc.

The same qualities, as well as a wonderful affinity for the fresh charm of these French Canadian songs (Ms LeBlanc is French-Canadian herself), make this recording an enthralling one. I can never listen to Suzie LeBlanc without thanking God for her exquisite contributions to the world of music, and this recording was no exception.

She has just released another very similar recording, called "Tout passe: Chants d'Acadie", in which the focus, while remaining upon Acadian songs, is shifted to reflect the great upheaval of Acadians forced out of their homelands, to wander upon what one could call a type of pilgrimage. That sense of pilgrimage is strongly highlighted in the recording - and once again, Ms LeBlanc's singing and choice of (often extraordinarily haunting) songs combine to produce a CD of great beauty and unforgettable interpretation.

I very highly recommend both this recording "Mer jolie" and its new "companion" CD of "Tout Passe". I have just played both recordings twice over while doing some research, and they are so charming and moving that it will be with reluctance that I move on to the next CD waiting to be heard.

No complaint with the music. The insert appears to be a single sheet, black and white photocopy. I would have made a better job myself if I had copied the disc. I buy many cd's, never copy or for that matter let anyone copy them, but presentations like this make me wild.

this album of daniel lanois is worth far more than 5 stars. i would give this album 100 out of 100. this man's voice is very haunting.i love 'the maker' and 'still water' these 2 songs are just out of this world. buy this album and you will know what i mean and whoever else loves this album will understand and know what i mean.

I enjoyed this mostly because it is so different from what I've come to expect from Cajun artists that I hadn't heard of before. That is, less of a honky tonk approach to music. Good voices, good choice of songs, well done.

You got to love it!!! The harmony is great, the backgrounds are tremindous, everything is off the hook here. The first four songs are my favorites. Great job Les Amies Louisianaises and Max Fontenot and his crew. I hope the next album is as good or even better!

A first class Cajun album in French........2002-10-30

If you are looking for a quality cd with Cajun music in French this is one too hard to pass up.There are very few cd's with original cajun folk songs in French only.This one is unique because it's performed by an all female quartet!Most cajun songs were traditionally sung by men. These old favorites were slightly changed to suite the ladies singing them . If you are of Cajun descent or just like the culture , you'll probably recognise some old favorites and fall in love with the new ones . Of the old favorites are Madame Sousthène , La valse à Bélisaire and Allons danser Colinda. The new additions include Reviens pour Noël .This one is a French version of "Pease come for Christmas "written by the ladies.The crown jewel of the collection is La Grâce du Ciel or Amazing grace. It is the only known French version written by the Aguillard sisters and Donna Thibodeaux.These women from Lake Charles have ecellent harmony and sweet angelic voices . When they bring out another album it's sure to be a hit as their first work. Give it a try , you'll be pleasently surprised . À la prochain et prends les choses à l 'aisse.
