5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-06-29

Simply the best trance album of 2006. Listening to the whole album, one can enjoy a definitive experience of "future sound of trance" . Hard to pick a favorite, but one thing is for sure : "Air for Life" will be a true trance classic.

2 out of 5 stars Soft .......2007-06-02

I have heard these guys play before live there are off the chain . It was a little to soft for me But ok . I think they put way to many vocal songs on the cd but over all they did a good job . It was ok but not the best cd over all put in 2006 far from it .

5 out of 5 stars Best CD of 2006!!!!.......2007-05-21

Brand new, thanks! This is the best CD I bought in over a year. A totally cool, chill-out CD. My girlfriend loves it too.

4 out of 5 stars HELP I CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT!!.......2007-03-12

Oh my god, this cd is simply awesome. It is relaxing and upbeat at the same time. I can play it in the car on my way to work when I'm stuck in traffic, or at home at night when I dim the lights, it fits both environments. My best songs are mostly the vocal ones.

Stealing Time- I can relate to the songs lyrics
Can't Sleep- Very etheral vocals, heavenly!
Hope, and Liquid Love- nice instrumentals, flows well with Can't sleep
Alone Tonight- clever lyrics in this song

Overall the album is great and is one of the most unique CD's in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I own.......2007-03-10

Excellent cd as others have noted.
Most of the tracks are great.

Standouts are: Air for Life, and: Can't Sleep. They are simply superb. Great music with variations of driving beats and soft interludes. Female vocals that are almost hypnotic.

Track: Good for me, is great as well. Soft, with great vocals.

Most of the other tracks are very good, but as noted by one of the other reviewers, I did not like voice of the male singer(s) on what otherwise would have been very good, if not great, songs.

    4 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-03-20

So I was on a Renaissance kick for a while and picked this up, first of all, great value. I enjoy listening to a few of these every now and then but can't take too much at once, check out the previews and if you interested, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Not stilted but powerfully alive.......2005-02-24

My idea of stilted is to sing these madrigals in the phony, glee-club RP style endured for so many years, that made precious, quaint curiosities of them. The Elizabethan pronunciation on this CD is an eye and ear-opener. We may appreciate how much of that speech actually endures in regional accents in both the US and UK. More importantly, this CD brings us the sounds of the long-forgotten English human beings of the Renaissance, people who drank, fought and screwed, who brought us Shakespeare and the King James Bible. I love this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Better at Italian than English.......2003-07-25

A stilted style and even more stilted attempts at Renaissance-English pronunciation make the English Madrigal disk a terrible disappointment. All emotional content -- the mellow, lumimous melancholy with flashes of fire that characterizes English music at its best -- has been drained in this attempt to kill, skin, and stuff these madrigals in order to present them as museum pieces. The pronunciation problem is particularly galling -- if these songs are going to be made incomprehensible to modern English speakers, where, then, is their cultural home?

The Italian pieces are presentable, enjoyable, and sung with delicacy and a fine sense of the artifice of the Italian madrigal. Although this recording can be moving, these pieces are performed more with reverence than with love. These are well worth hearing, but the French ensembles sing these with a bit more feeling. Try, say, Ensemble Clément Janequin.

    5 out of 5 stars Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14

Italian culture during the period from the 14th to the 16th centuries was a whirlwind of developing literature and art, and during this period of history Florence was a political and cultural center to rival Milan or Verona.
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Best Italian Renaissance disc available........2002-06-28

This re-issue of recordings from the early 70's by the Early Music Consort Of London is,in my opinion, the best recordings of Italian Renaissance works. It is the favorite of my eary music discs, and includes music treasures from 14th and 16th century Florence. Great listening on both discs, and worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Munrow is magnificent.......2001-11-20

The first disc in this collection is delightful. David Munrow's recorder is a genuine treat. The vocal parts blend well and create a festive atmosphere. The Early Music Consort of London offer a splendid performance. By contrast, the second disc, which features Musica Reservata, is a bit disappointing. Two of the solo voices on disc two are harsh, detracting from an otherwise pleasant recording. They may fairly represent the performing style of sixteenth century Florence, but that is small consolation for the twentieth century ear. Nonetheless, the virtues of the first disc are sufficient to warrant purchasing this collection. Munrow is magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars boccacio would be proud.......2000-04-23

this is a superb recording of early music it is well performed and played. the first cd is all music from the 1300,s and the second is from the 1500,s if you like the kind of music this is the cd to get well worth it.

I can't even single out songs... because they are all wonderful, you know what... I think I will single out a few! "Message for the Saints" and "Didn't It Rain" are just AMAZING tracks. I mean, amazing amazing amazing.... if you missed this album you are missing out on True and Filling food for the soul. This has got to be apart of any Gospel fans collection. I can't say enough about it... the first song I heard by Donald Lawrence was "Message for the Saints" and I was amazed at the character of the song, what I mean by that is... that blending of different sounds and octaves it was just a really uplifting song and it still has the same power today as it did back then. All I have to say is, if you don't have this cd GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT. If you do, enjoy it!

    5 out of 5 stars JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08

I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!

    5 out of 5 stars Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14

Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.

5 out of 5 stars hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01

This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

With Omega, Daniel Smith and his sibs complete the circle begun with 1998's visionary folk-pop record Tri-Danielson (Alpha). The Danielson clan make gospel parables that happen to be some of the sweetest, funkiest songs this side of the Shaggs' "My Pal Foot-Foot" or Daniel Johnston's "Speeding Motorcycle." These are campfire songs that sparkle with giddy goodness and lay claim to the purest part of self. Instrumentation has expanded to include gypsy-style violin and an enlarged marching-band horn section as well as greater use of keys, wah-wah pedal, and delay. Thus, Omega is a more funk-driven record with sharper intensity in the shambling orchestral arrangements, as on the effervescent "Guilt Scouting." Omega takes on the evils of TV ("Idiot Boksen"), judgmental people ("Don't You Be the Judge"), as well as a triad of "Deeper Than [America's] Gov't" songs that not so much preach at but administer to the souls of converts and heathens alike. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars The Weirdness and the Glory!.......2001-03-07

Tri-Danielson--Omega is Part Two of a spiritual double-shot by the Danielson Famile (Part One was called "Alpha"), America's quirkiest and most original "Christian" rockers. Yes, they are devoted Christians, but the music the Danielsons make does not require you to be of a specific faith, nor does it any way shove their beliefs down your throat. Instead, the Famile concentrate on making fantastically original music that couches their faith in allegories, odd tales and sometimes flat-out strange musical compositions that keep you guessing. They sound like a folk band gone mad at times, and like inspired art rockers at others. There is little precedent for their style; some of the music resembles the cartoon oddity of early Ween (who curiously come from the same part of the country!) or The Pixies, some of it sounds like songs from a WAY off Broadway musical. "Idiot Boksen," an incredibly catchy, childlike song about the perils of watching too much TV, is simply glorious and irresistable. "Thanx to Noah" is hypnotic in an indescribable way; the martial drums and almost punkish acoustic guitars, plus the way the track is mixed, will really get under your skin--in a good way. In fact, the track is ABOUT what's under your skin. "Guilt Scouting" employs a 3-note electric guitar riff and nicely-thunked bells to produce a strange track. Let it also be said that Daniel Smith is a most unconventional singer; he has one of the highest falsetto voices you've ever heard. It takes getting used to, and if you're a conservative listener, it can grate at times; but if you like pure passion and you can adapt to Daniel's delivery, you'll find it to be utterly compelling and enchanting after awhile. It's a voice that's full of character and whimsy. "Don't You Be The Judge" is like a kooky campground sing-along which plays with words and the whole "call-and-response" concept; its folkie sound gives way to a bit of unexpected, crunching, Ween-like weirdness at the end which personally made me grin from ear to ear. This is one unpredictable, creative group! And the unified 3-part suite "Deeper Than My Government" is an honest-to-God masterpiece. Beginning with the motif of a sampled police whistle or something, and a catchy strummed acoustic guitar, the piece builds and flows, adding on the youthful harmonies of the younger Danielson siblings, and several different musical motifs that create a mood of deeply soulful, melancholy contemplation of what matters most in life. "Never forget where you came from" Daniel sings over and over near the end, and if you've made it through the album this far, you'll never forget what you've heard. It does no disservice to this group to say that they simply aren't for everyone. This is dramatic, unpredictable, eccentric music that requires an open mind and open ears. If you've got those, prepare yourself for the weirdness and the glory that epitomize the Danielson Family. You'll laugh, you'll raise your eyebrows, you'll get chills, your jaw will drop. Personally, I love these folks, and I'll take them over 90% of the "contemporary" music I hear these days. They're passionate and original; what more do you want?

5 out of 5 stars part two of the great tri-danielson experience, its great!.......2000-09-08

well, this is my favorite album by danielson family and i highly recommend it to anyone. most of the songs on this album are really catchy and the 3part "deeper than the gov't" is really good. this album basically continues from where the previous left off and is just great!the lyrics are very good, very spiritual. the music is the usual: guitar, keyboard, banjo, sleigh bells, drums...etc. basically, if you like the pixies and any other indie bands you'll probably like this. but daniel's voice is very high pitched, so if that kind of thing bothers you- you will be missing out on a great album. just buy it, give it time, and you'll be singing along in no time...trust me, i used to be an skeptic.

    5 out of 5 stars Outsider Music.......2000-06-17

When you first hear Danielson, you wont know what to think. That's because thier music is so original there's nothing to compare it to, so your mind just draws blank. Thier originality is in part due to thier youthfullness, you get a sense of something unspoiled or unaffected. There's an uncanny quality which comes from the religous inspiration in thier music, they explore deep socialized themes with an intuitive freshness that is unsurpassed. It takes foresight and an innovative mind, to appriciate Danielson, it's brilliant music, but it's not for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Zappa and Beafheart would be proud..oh and Jesus too!.......2000-04-08

This is alternative music. A music term that lost it's meaning when the alternative became the mainstream is defined again by music like this. It is almost too alternative to be alternative. Call it avante-pop! Believe it or not, Spin magazine gave this disc a great write up. It has been difficult for artists that happen to be christians to break through to the secular market, even if Sixpence None The Richer have recently succeeded. Remarkably, this record is more focused on it's christian foundation than the Sixpence disc and still finds a way to avoid sounding preachy to the non-christian. The christians will appreciate the messages and those that don't care for religeous content to be in their music will find the disc fresh enough that they won't mind them. Often the messages are delivered in a fashion that is so campy, it is cool. (ie. Pottymouth from )

As you may have guessed, I listen to christian and secular music. I will admit that from strictly artistic perspective, I, generally, find my secular music to be more accomplished. However, (Alpha) and (Omega) along with Caedmon's Call's "40 Acres" and Starflyer 59's "The Fashion Focus" are among the best discs in alternative (or whatever you want to call it) in the past 2 years.
