Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans is an 11-song journey bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary history, tradition and modern instrumentation. While it is impossible to fully realize such scope on a single disc, Sacred Spirit makes the choice to represent all indigenous Americans rather than become mired in the potentially divisive bog of politics and tribal allegiance. All but two melodies are entirely traditional, bringing together flute, drums, and vocals with a cello and keyboard wash. This marriage is most effective on the lovely bowing of "The Cradlesong," and the looping electro-acoustic beauty of "Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity." Elsewhere, synthetic elements are overwhelming, detracting from a song's essence, as with the spongy nervosity of "Elevation." An uneven offering, Sacred Spirit doesn't quite live up to its promise. There are a few tracks that are really great on this CD. I expected more Native America chanting/singing and less electronic music. That being said, I really like the CD. It does strike a spiritual chord during some of the tracks. There are reviews here that look like they belong in a magazine. I will just say that if you like World Music or New Age music (and they ARE different), I suspect this is a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection.

THE best CD i've bought in a long long time!!!!.......2007-04-09

I was watching one of Youtube's clip of the Grand Canyon's Skywalk that opened up last year on an Indian reservation. The clip has this most beautiful trance-like mellow groove song on it and i HAD to find out what or who it was by. Thanks to the helpful people who posted a reply, i was able to find and obtain this CD. The song on that Youtube clip was called [ Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (Circle Dance)]. As the title of this comment says, it IS the best CD i've bought in a VERY a long time. In fact i'm listening to it now as i'm writing this.
The combination of Trance, Newage, Lounge and tranquil music is enough to take you away. I wanna say it's like a combination of Deep Forest meets Jam and Spoon meets Enigma. I just can't put it into better words than the other people who has posted the same comments about this CD. I HIGHLY recommend buying this and enjoying it! I just can't seem to get tire of it!

Soothing Native Music.......2007-03-30

I am a fan of infusion between tribal beat and modern music. This collection is wonderful infusion between tribal beat and enchanting vocal blended with modern instrumental sound. If you like Deep Forest you will definitely love this. It is not like Enigma or Magna Canta but it has it's own charm. I am going to buy all Sacred Spirit volumes after hearing this.

As for me and MY family..........2007-05-28

we love it!!! I had this CD when the PBS show came out, and my eldest daughter (now 21) loved it. We listened to it every night. Then my youngest came along....and scratched it by accident. So I HAD to get another. She loves it too. I've heard some say it's not representative of "true" NA music. Personally, whether it is or not is nothere or there for me. I know I like the music, and my family does as well. I will always have a copy of this in my library.

This CD has a great collection of songs. Never heard the artist before but he sure could deliver good and powerful songs. Highly recommended for a taste of something nice and different.

I must repeat what others have said; awesome! It's been since August that I've purchased this CD and have played it daily. My family and I have never tired of listening to it. Ignore that negative review please, you have to have this CD, don't miss another minute of not having it. In all honesty it will move your soul, as if the ancestors themselves guided his words and reasoning. You'll be spellbound, and yet moved to be creative as well. It awakens what has stayed silenced within. Nothing negative, all positive, no more illusions. Keep listening to the ancestors words Robbie, and make more CD's!

just judging the music.......2007-01-07

Seems like most of the negative reviews have more to do with gripes with Robertson's personal life than this album. I don't know much about that. Just judging this album by the music the comes out of my speakers, it is incredibly good. Incredibly, incredibly good.

Robbie Robinson is great and this is a wonderful cd. I heard it first as a tape years ago and was so glad to find it on cd at a reasonable cost. I love the chants and the women's voices are beautiful.

Given the multi-million-copy selling success of Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans, its follow-up, Sacred Spirit II is bound to have a built-in audience. Like its predecessor, the collection mixes chant and song with dance beats and electronic instrumentation. While tracks such as "Dela Dela" and "Yane-Heja-Hee" meld these elements most effectively, the overall effect of the synthesized sound is heavily over the top and distracting from the gentle melodies and heartfelt cries of Native music at its best. A prime example is the tender and lovely female vocal on "May You Walk in Sunshine," obscured by overly aggressive accompaniment. A new type of music for the soul. It's wonderful. It's beautiful. It's exciting. And worth listening to. It's Native American chants and dances
done with some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

The music has a rhythmic beat that's very catchy, but very soothing. I enjoyed it immensely.

I expected more of this volume since the first one is real extraordinary, and seems to be hard to beat. However is good enough to have it. Good production and most of the tracks are in the same mood of the first volume.

We bought this CD while visiting Arizona last summer. We loved it so much that we have purchased this copy through Amazon for a friend as a Christmas Gift. He loves it too! This is a great combination of spiritual, Native music and chants along with "pop" melodies. I normally play inspirational CD's....lots of Native flute music, and meditation CD's but this one (and also Sacred Spirit Vol. 1) I can play when I have guests over and they do not fall asleep!

I buy CDs like these (Native American flute and drum) for the music. I find it very soothing when I want to relax or as background music at small get-togethers. On this CD somewhere towards the end of the first track or maybe the middle of the second track, a man begins giving a speech or maybe a sermon about clean water and how soon we won't have any, yadda, yadda, yadda. It's not that I'm insensitive to the serious current threats to our environment. But I thought I was buying soft music to relax to.

Based on other reviews, and my love of many Native American recordings, I thought I would love this CD. I was wrong. Just not my style. Next time I'm definitely going to have to listen to the tracks before I buy. A few of the songs are nice, but most just not what I like.

looking for music to remember the Lewis&Clark expedition.......2005-08-02

I haven't listen to the whole CD yet, but from what I could gather, the name and the music samples make me think this is the best music companion for my trip down the Columbia river. I'll be on the river 200 years to the date when Lewis&Clark continued their journey from the Snake River, into the Columbia and finally the ocean.

I'll let you know if it work indeed.

The Best Ever!.......2004-04-08

This is the first CD I have ever bought, or heard, from Native Americans. Now, I listen to it over and over and over again, no matter what I am doing. It is very beautiful with a variety of calming, moving sounds. You can feel the music move right through you, clensing your mind, body and senses.
I definitely recommend this CD above all others.

This CD is listenable and has some nice music, but has nothing memorable. There is no rousing main theme that I expect from a soundtrack and many of the songs are not particularly good. If you are interested in music from this period, get the soundtracks to "Last of the Mohicans, The Patriot, and A&E's Revolution" (if you can find and afford that last one). Pass on this one.

This contains a variety of Native music-from a wide field of repected artists.Good music to listen to and relax-I play it in the car when travelling to Pow-Wow or gatherings to get grounded and become ready to be with my Native family.

"Peace of Mind".......2001-05-19

This is a beautifully done compilation of various native artists that is in the genre of "easy listening". The songs in native tongue are soothing, uncomplicated and restorative. I found my worries disappear as I listened to it. The outstanding piece on this one for me was "Mother Earth" by Joanne Shenendoah. I would have bought the tape for this one alone. The words of truth and lovely melody with her pristine voice is amazingly beautiful. Priemaux and Mike are also among my favorites. High recomendation!

I've had most of these songs on vinyl and they provide me with many wonderful memories. Paul Robeson had an unusual voice: a bass with baritone colorations, huge and powerful, with what can best be described as a mellow urgency. If that description confuses, then you'll just have to get this album and hear for yourself what I mean.
Robeson championed the cause of the working man through his music. Joe Hill is one of my favorites, in which Paul sinks down to the vocal depths with an astounding ease. The Song of the Plains is a rouser, and, if I remember correctly, it's sung in two languages. The Ballad For Americans is here, and it's a classic... and, for me, it's the very definition of America and the great spirit and soul of its people and its greatness. By and By is one of my favorite spirituals, and this is the version I remember. Who sang spirituals with as much richness and depth of feeling as Paul Robeson? Maybe Marian Anderson, whose voice was unique and whose life broke through so many barriers.
This is an album for those who love freedom and the many races who seek it. God bless Paul Robeson for his incredible contribution to humanity.
