Editorial Reviews Michael grew up in upstate New York along the shores of the Hudson River. At 19 years old, he moved to the Mexican border town of Laredo, Texas to work as a late night DJ. One night, he played Turn, Turn, Turn by the 60s folkrock group The Byrds. As the song played, Michael recalled seeing folk artists like Pete Seegar, Harry Chapin and others performing in his old hometown north of New York City. Two months later, he settled into the mountain hamlet of Mousie, Kentucky to begin his journey to become a folksinger. For the next three years, Michael travelled up and down the hollers of the Appalachian mountains enjoying the music of the mountain people. He participated in hundreds of front porch hootenannies where folks would pull out their banjos and fiddles and play the old songs that their grandparents taught them. He began performing concerts at hundreds of colleges, schools and fairs. He sang songs about the earth, performed for the benefit of the homeless and farm families, and played for shelters helping battered women and children. In all, he sang to over two million people in one four year stretch. Billboard Magazine headlined him as an "UnSung Hero." He has been featured on CNN, TNN, Headline News, NPR, the Bravo Movie Channel and several syndicated radio shows. You can hear Michael each week on his internationally syndicated radio program, the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour.

Album Description
It took a lifetime of songwriting, hours of rehearsals in my farmhouse and thousands of people willing to sit in a theatre and listen to us play to make this album. Songs for the Michael Johnathon and the Folkboy Orchestra Live! were recorded during various broadcasts of the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour and feature several guest artists including Andrea Zonn, the Kruger Brothers, Maura O'Connell and Sweet Honey in the Rock as well as my friends and music mates, the FolkBoy Orchestra. Captain Don Cornwell (bass), Ben "The Kid" Sollee (cello) and Hotlicks Harsha Sen (mandolin) are brilliant musicians and wonderful people. We hope you enjoy our favorite live performances from recent WoodSongs broadcasts.

The music is well-arranged, relaxed and at times meditative.......2004-06-09
Johnathon's music is relaxed and at times meditative. "Chimney and the Grave," a nearly eight-minute poem and song, for example, stimulates the imagination. "The cradle now becomes the grave of a future left behind." Favorite cuts of mine include "Winter's Eve," "New Wood," and "Winter Has Me in its Grip." Michael Johnathon's live performances clearly emphasize his songs' lyrical messages. He also ends the project by paying tribute to the topical (and often times disenfranchised) songwriter, Bob Dylan, with a cover of "Knocking on Heaven's Door." With his energy, passion and deep lyrics, Johnathon follows a muse similar to Dylan's. I particularly enjoy his simpler songs of love and home, while others with more allusion and imagery require a higher degree of listener scrutiny. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
