Amazon.com essential recording

The epic sweep of Ragtime is captured in its opening prologue, a nine-minute kaleidoscope of fictional characters mingling with historical figures from the early 20th century as originally captured in E.L. Doctorow's sprawling novel. As the story continues, we meet pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Brian Stokes Mitchell) and his child's mother, Sarah (Audra McDonald), who has been taken in by a respectable family (including Marin Mazzie as Mother). Parallel story lines of the Latvian immigrant Tateh (Peter Friedman), the entertainer Evelyn Nesbit (Lynnette Perry), and even Harry Houdini (Jim Corti) and Emma Goldman (Judy Kaye) eventually mingle and merge. Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on This Island) mix marches, cakewalks, and of course ragtime to create a rich, compelling score, including Sarah's song to her baby, "Your Daddy's Son," her soaring duet with Coalhouse, "Wheels of a Dream," Mother's self-revealing "Back to Before," and numerous set pieces, all performed by a perfect cast. Ragtime was nominated for 12 Tony Awards in 1998, with wins for McDonald, original score, book, and orchestration. The CD also includes an eight-minute symphonic suite conducted by Paul Gemignani and a booklet with photos, full lyrics, and a history of how the score was written. Tragic, touching, and ultimately triumphant, Ragtime is an American classic. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of an excellent show.......2007-05-26

I highly recommend this item, especially if you're looking for a new favorite musical. Buy this 2 CD set, instead of the 1 CD version because 1) the 1 CD version is merely a concept album, and the final show underwent numerous changes before taking its final form, 2) In order to fit on 1 CD some of the best music of the show is cut from the other version, and 3) the 2 CD version contains enough narration and plot songs that if you've never seen the show you have a very good idea of what it's about.

Unlike many other cast albums, "Ragtime" doesn't contain any clunker songs. Every one is either catchy, innovative, heart wrenching, or outright fun.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime.......2007-05-15

Got the CD after seeing the show, and have listened again and again with increasing appreciation for the show, and the novel, which I re-read after many years.
"It's somehow haunting me . . ."

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Inspirational Cast Recording! .......2006-09-13

This 2-disc set is the most beautiful recording you will ever come across. The sound is perfect and it contains all of the songs from the musical, unlike the 'Highlights' CD. The singers are brilliant and they play their roles perfectly. Brian Stokes Mitchell is a wonderful and intense Coalhouse, and Peter Friedman is a beautiful voice as Tateh. Marin Mazzie and Audra McDonald co-star as Mother and Sarah, and Mark Jacoby is a inspirational and powerful Father. Lynette Perry and Jim Corti are halarious as Evelyn Nesbit and Harry Houndini. Some of the best songs on this recording are:

Prolouge: Ragtime
Journey On
Success
Gettin Ready Rag
New Music
Wheels of a Dream
Justice
Till We Reach That Day
Coalhouse's Silioquy
Coalhouse Demands
What a Game(halarious!)
Atlantic City
Our Children
He Wanted to Say
Look What You've Done
Epilouge

This recording also includes a bonus track: The Ragtime Symphonic Suite, which contains the tunes to the main songs in Ragtime. Like the other songs, this track is wonderful. If you are looking for a recording that will make you laugh, cry, and inspire you all at once, this is the perfect buy for you!

5 out of 5 stars In the Age of Sondheim, this piece stands beside his work and doesn't pale at all........2006-06-18

"Ragtime" utilzes so many different elements. From a compositional stand point, the music begins as does the story. We have three different classes of people and three different styles of music. As the musical proceeds and the classes begin to mingle and then clash, the music does the same thing. This is a subtle element of brilliance; most audience memebers wouldn't catch this. This piece comes as close to opera as does "Sweeney Todd". The recording includes a Orchestra Suite at the end that is so well written that it stands beautifully on it's own and doesn't sound like a last minute Overture. Each character is well defined by musical motif. The cast is outstanding with the very best singers and actors available to Broadway and Lincoln Center. Marin Mazzie sings the remarkable "Back To Before" and Audra MacDonald "Your Daddy's Hands" making them songs that will stand as monuments to theatre the way that "People" does for Streisand, "Rose's Turn" For Merman, "Hello Dolly" for Carol Channing. The musical skill of the orchestra is remarkable, whether it's the pianist, the clarinet sounding like an Eastern European standard. Or the remarkable first violin who climbes up a scale to bring a piece together at the end for a pitch so beautifully played at the top of the instrument's range. The songs themselves are spectacular; each piece develops and we do hear character development themes; each repeated motif in a song has thickened and developed along with the character, so we never ever feel as though the score was written hastily. "Ragtime" is a musical that defies the old line, "Theatre in New York is Dead."

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime, Ragtime , Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime, Ragtime!!!!!.......2006-01-27

When I was 11 I got the oppertunity to see Ragtime on Broadway, but back then I really didn't get how deep and beautiful the score was and is. Back then I just thought it was boring and I couldn't wait to leave so I could be that much closer to seeing the Lion King (Which is also an amazing musical, but anyway).
Now that I'm older I truly see how amazing the score is and that it really deserved the Tony. This recording is also inspired, from the first 8 min sweeping introduction into the show, to the it's reprise at the end almost every song is wonderful. Beautifully written and preformed.

Where popular music is concerned, most immigrant populations begin by looking back toward their homelands before developing styles that reflect their own take on the slow, arduous process of assimilation. Eastern European Jewish musicians had especially rich traditions to draw upon, although in the old country, professional players were often treated like social pariahs. But this began to change in the New World; many vaudeville and big band tunes evolved from klezmer tunes and owe as much to long-ago shtetl weddings as Tin Pan Alley. The cover says it all: "Jewface" is a wry reference to "blackface," yet another form of ethnic minstrelsy that is presently regarded as unspeakably un-PC. Recorded as early as 1905 and rescued from fragile wax cylinders and 78-rpm recordings, the tunes collected here are chock-full of Yiddish-inflected dialect pieces (comedian Jackie Mason is a modern descendant). They are often crudely, raucously funny, if one can get past the now-repugnant stereotypes. These ditties, which must have cheered up thousands of lonely newcomers, are heard in understandably antique yet remarkably clear sound. All are well worth the price of admission but Irving Kaufman's "My Yiddisha Mammy," which probably inspired Al Jolson, and "Becky Is Back in the Ballet," recorded by Fanny Brice in 1922, are both falling-on-the-floor, boffo numbers--in more ways than one! --Christina Roden

Album Description

What did the dawn of American pop music sound like? The answer can be found on the new Reboot Stereophonic release Jewface, consisting of Jewish minstrel songs that took vaudeville stages by storm at the turn of the twentieth century. Composed by legendary tunesmiths like Irving Berlin and Gus Kahn, many of these songs made use of authentically Jewish musical motifs, fusing them with every Jewish stereotype under the sun. From "Under the Matzos Tree" to "I'm a Yiddish Cowboy," exploring the Jewface recordings reveals one of the dirty little secrets of American culture: some of the very first hit records were fiendishly catchy Jewish musical creations! All of these songs have been re mastered from cylinder recordings to create one of the most remarkable, and perhaps offensive, albums ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fasicnating but not PC.......2007-05-07

These classic performances might offend a few people, but they are a wonderful souvenir of an earlier time in America when ethic material of this type was commonplace.
And many of the performances are terrific.

4 out of 5 stars Yiddish vaudeville.......2007-02-22

This album is exactly what it advertises itself to be: a compendium of songs and comedy routines featuring the stereotypical Jewish immigrant parodies popular in vaudeville before the 1930's. PC it ain't, but a necessary piece of theatre history it is. To listen to Fanny Brice singing "Becky Is Back In The Ballet" is worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Offensive Here!.......2007-01-28

Anyone who would be offended by Jewface is probably not Jewish at all! We have always had the ability to laugh at ourselves and this CD is nothing less than pure gold to the grand tradition of angst.

Enjoy

P.S. - The mastering from these old wax gems is a job well done!

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-01-16

This is a very entertaining collection of quirky old Jewish vaudeville-type songs. Yes, they sound scratchy, because a number of them were taken from really old (wax cylinders, even) recordings, but we like old radio stuff, so this didn't bother us. These were all pieces that we had never heard before, and we love them. Uncensored, self-effacing American Jewish humor. Cultural history in a jewelcase. What's not to like?

At first glance, the wedding of newly discovered lyrics by Okie folk legend Woody Guthrie to melodies by the Klezmatics--a band that blends the sounds and images of Yiddish culture with world music and American traditions--seems incongruous, at best. But there is method in the madness of executive producer and Woody's daughter, Nora Guthrie. In the 1940s, the Guthries family lived in the heavily Jewish borough of Brooklyn, where their visitors included not only such activist pals as Pete Seeger, but Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt--Guthrie's mother-in-law--who shared his devotion to message and idealism. The troubadour's dusted-off words, particularly on "Mermaid Avenue," show his constant awareness and appreciation of Jewish culture, as well as his predictable fixation with the fleetingness of life in a time of war ("Pass Away," "Goin' Away to Sea"). Yet there is a new gentleness and renewed love of poetry in many of these pieces, especially in the closing song, "Heaven," which reflects Guthrie's continuing social consciousness, i.e., labor struggles and the homeless. The Klezmatics, on their first English-language album, push Woody's folkie form into the 21st century, with melodies built around Middle Eastern or Slavic frameworks--put to best use on the delicate lullaby "Heddy Down" and the affirming "Wheel of Life." --Alanna Nash

    Album Description

The story of Wonder Wheel is a glorious tale of happenstance and discovery, populated by luminaries from different worlds and different eras.

In the pantheon: American folk icon Woody Guthrie and world music superstars the Klezmatics, Woody's daughter, Nora Guthrie, maestro Itzhak Perlman—whose chance meeting with Nora helped plant the seed for the project, Celtic vocalist Susan McKeown, and producers GoodandEvil (Sex Mob, Elysian Fields, Felix Da Housecat).

These Coney Island-wrought lyrics add a less-known urban dimension to a man seen as the avatar of dust- bowl ballads. But, like thousands of his songs, they were left unrecorded, their music forgotten.

The result, seven years in the making, is Wonder Wheel—a record Nora describes as "Just as my father would have wanted." The album reflects Woody's political stance and social agenda into a larger, global mirror, and brings a 20th century American figurehead to a 21st-century audience. Woody's lyrics—set to music that's filled with Eastern European, klezmer, Latin, Celtic, Afro-Caribbean and folk flavors—take on a universal life of their own. As GoodandEvil's Danny Blume notes, the music is "an intense combination of the familiar and the exotic. But above all, it's completely natural, all-encompassing, and intensely human."

From my childhood on, I have reveled in the music of Mickey Katz. Originally issued as yiddish comedy records, the records, originally on 78's went into oblivion with the number of yiddish speakers. A few survived, and the best of them are on this release. Even if you have to listen with a yiddish english phrase book, or dictionary, it is worth the effort not to let this wonderful humor disappear.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of klezmer favorites!.......2006-09-30

Premiere violinist Itzhak Perlman is joined live in concert by four premiere klezmer groups: Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Vibrant, poignant and distinctly old-world, klezmer is the musical style that developed among Eastern European Jews. Featuring the soulful fire of violin, clarinet, accordion, mandolin and vocal leads, accompanied by cimbalom (a hammered-dulcimer), piano, drums. There are a few soulful slow tunes mixed in amongst the fiery dances, but most of the selections on "Live in the Fiddler's House" are fun and up tempo, full of the instrumental virtuosity one would expect both of this genre, and of a concert violinist of Itzhak Perlman caliber. Klezmer is some of the world's best good-time music, right up there with Irish jigs, Cajun two-steps and country banjo pickin'. But it's not all sweetness and light; inherent in the mournful, minor mode of this traditional music is blend of opposites--both the sorrow of persecution and defiant sense of fun-in-the-moment inherent of a culture displaced, trying to maintain its identity in an ever-changing and often hostile world. And therein lies klezmer's appeal to the soul. For more great Jewish music, try any of the separate releases by Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and his band, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. You might also enjoy "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World," the traditional Sephardic music of the group Voice of the Turtle, and the unplugged world fusion of Basya Schechter and Pharoah's Daughter in "Out of the Reeds."

Although it's a kind of live version of "In the Fiddler's House", the repertoire is not the same (they only share one or two songs). The bands accompanying Itzhak Perlman are at their best (they are the best klezmer performers!). I prefer, personally, Andy Statman's clarinet and mandolin (Andy's Ride and Meron Nign/In the Sukke are my favorites); then there are great moments with Brave Old World (Doina Naftule and A Hora mit Branfn are beautiful pieces) and the Klezmatics, of course. The 12 minute finale is an absolute well crafted medley, under Klezmer Conservatory Band's leader, Hankus Netsky. I did'n want it to end.
I don't like at all the women voices of Klezmer Conservatory Band, although the instrumental pieces (like Khosidl) are amazing.
There is not a second in this album which is not top klezmer.

5 out of 5 stars This was a fun C.D........1999-01-16

For people who are into Klezmer music this is the finest C.D.! For Klezmer music lovers, this is a masterpiece.

    Album Description

    "A gilt-edged masterpiece." -- Jewish Week

"Best Middle East Peace Plan." -- Village Voice

"I want more of this band, much more." -- Global Rhythm

"A sound both hypnotic and charged." -- Washington Post

"Fuses Middle Eastern and Jewish sounds with a dark, indie pop sensibility." -- All Music Guide

Following Matisyahu's dramatic crossover from the Jewish market into the secular world, the most popular female New York Jewish musical artist is ready to break out! Haran features catchy songs that blend a Middle Eastern sound with contemporary hooks and a folk/pop mentality. Easy to dance to, it works for all audiences. Blending a psychedelic sensibility and a pan-Mediterranean sensuality, Basya Schechter leads her band through swirling Hasidic chants, Mizrachi and Sephardi folk-rock, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings, and electronica. Her sound has been cultivated by her Hasidic music background and a series of trips to the Middle East, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Central Africa, Turkey, Kurdistan, and Greece. She has recorded four albums: three with Pharaoh's Daughter and one instrumental exploration with Persian santur player Alan Kushan. Over the past two years, Schechter was the recipient of numerous compositional and project grants from the New York State Council of the Arts, American Composers Forum, and American Music Center.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb! .......2007-05-18

This highly anticipated release lives every bit up to expectations, and then some. With help from producer Fred Rubens, the album showcases the band's signature innovative Middle Eastern sound with modern-day grit and attitude. To be sure, the force of this album rests firmly on the foundation of Shechter's exquisite compositions. Still, it is the incredible musicianship of the band that makes this nothing short of a masterpiece. In addition to the earnest vocals of leader Basya Schechter and her oud and saz playing, the album features stellar performances by core band members playing violin, bass, organ, recorders, accordian, drums, and percussion. Topping it all off are exciting guest performances including Alan Kushan on santur, Adam Levy (of Norah Jones' band) on guitar, and others. This music is exquisite but edgy, authentic but contemporary, and absolutely infectious. This is World Music at its best--intricate and nuanced, but utterly accessible, blending swirling, syncopated seas of polyrhythm with beautiful, singable melodies. Pharaoh's Daughter's scope may be compared to that of Béla Fleck, who also draws from a wide array of musical traditions and sounds. However, while Fleck's combinations can sometimes sound forced, these always seem to work perfectly. Highlights include a Celtic-infused "Kah Ribon" with santur, Jason Lindner's psychedelic organ over Schecter's oud on "By Way of Haran," Levy's haunting guitar on the gripping "Hagar," and the rich, sensuous violin of Meg Okura on "Samai."

In his introductory note to this CD, Itzhak Perlman informs us that, more than anything else he has recorded, this is truly his own music--"what you might hear if you came to my house and I decided to jam with some friends." And jam he does--with some very talented friends indeed. Klezmer music, which combines the folk and religious music of Yiddish-speaking cultures with various musical traditions of countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Greece, is unusual territory for a major label and a superstar artist, but here the combination works perfectly. Perlman, who normally is the star of his recordings, just blends into the whole celebration. The playing of violin, accordion, mandolin, clarinet, and other instruments is stylish, infectious, and at times virtuosic. Strangely, the sound lacks openness, inhibiting the characteristically vibrant timbres of these instruments. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Souful and beautiful........2007-03-26

I love Jewish klezmer music, which I forgot to mention in another review of ethnic music, and this one is masterful. I love Itzhak Perlman's violin, both classical, and not. On this one though, he is matched equally with some of the greatest Jewish instrumentalists, and vocalists. Again, like with Greek music, I don't know the language, but that doesn't change my love of this incredibly, soulful, and exciting music. I recommend it as one of my favorites. R. Duane Gibson.

    5 out of 5 stars In the Fiddler's House.......2007-01-17

Perlman at his best. If you want to buy just one CD with Perlman performing, this is it.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-09-27

I recently rediscovered this CD (my mom had purchased about three years ago) and put it into my stereo just to see what it would be like. Little did I know that I was in for a huge - and pleasant - surprise!

"In the Fiddler's House" is what you might hear if you went to a Jewish person's house. It has that intimate, personal feeling. All the songs are great: some are fast, some are slow, some are a little in between. Overall it's a fantastic CD that can be enjoyed whether you're Jewish or not.

I would have to say that undoubtedly track 4 "Wedding Medley" is the best track on the CD (I'm listening to it as I write this). The combination of songs is not only seamless, but gives the song a feeling of surprise. The voices and instruments on this track are very, very lively and fun.

Buy this CD (or at least listen to some of the audio samples) and you'll discover the hidden surprises of Itzhak Perlman's "In the Fiddler's House"!

5 out of 5 stars Filled With Sprit!.......2002-06-24

I love this Itzhak Perlman CD...from the first time I listened to it, I was enchanted! I had never really known about klezmer (Jewish) music before, and this CD was a wonderful introduction to it. Klezmer is very emotional music, and Itzhak and his "friends" certainly bring that into the music. The violin and the other instruments are very mournful and soulful on some pieces-making them sound very haunting and "East European"-almost Persian. Other songs are party or celebration songs, played with wild abandon and zaniness-they really make you want to dance the hora! The instrumental side of "In the Fiddler's House" isn't the only great thing-the singing really adds to the CD. The vocals are in Yiddish (a very neat-sounding language) and go even further to make this CD a real "Jewish experience." The best thing about this CD? You absolutely do not have to be Jewish to enjoy it! I'm not, and I still can't get enough of this unique and soulful music...you'll be hooked once you hear it, too!

    5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2000-03-08

Like I said, I love it. I borrowed it from a friend, never having heard Itzhak Perlman before. It is absolutely magical. My favorite track is number 5. It sounds so enchanting and mystical. This is definately a must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Jewish Joni Mitchell.......2007-05-27

I belong to the same Temple as Debbie, so maybe I'm biased but...my tastes run Beck/Radiohead/Tori Amos and ironically, she fits into that combination perfectly. This is a religious CD made for those of the Jewish persuasion, to be sure. It's perfect for either private time background music or as thoughtful meditations. Thank G-d Debbie is a Jew and chooses to use her gift to create soundtracks for us. She's a gift from G-d, to be sure. Yeah, ok, some of it is kinda MOR but it's only a few songs. `Miriam's Song' is the bestest, my favorite. Much love to ya, Debbie...

I am waiting for Debbie Friedman's new CD to come out this month, but until then... I love this CD because it has all of your Debbie Friedman favorites and a few songs that you may not have known about, but will come to love. This anthology is great and very complete. Now... that new album, which is coming out has got to be Debbie's best. Did you go to the listen page for it? Awesome.

Master mandolinist David Grisman and clarinet virtuoso Andy Statman, in a long-awaited follow-up to Songs of Our Fathers (1995), have again combined their shared Jewish heritages. That both men are veterans of the "newgrass" and folk scenes comes across in the Appalachian-like swing of the title selection and their collaboration sounds unforced and mutually sympathetic throughout. Statman's honking, shrieking clarinet, with its echoes of past masters like Giora Feidman and Dave Tarras, soars and swoops along, just this side of spoken language. Grisman's plangent yet mellifluous plucked strings are miracles of flawless technique and taste, and he is periodically joined by Statman on the same instrument. The duo are assisted by studio drummer Hal Blaine and Enrique Coria on acoustic guitar, both of whom also appeared on Songs of Our Fathers, plus noted slide guitarist Bob Brozman and Grisman's son, Samson, who ably sits in on bass. Highlights include "Oifen Pripitchik" (On the Hearth), a sweetly melancholy 19th-century Yiddish song, and the Chassidic niggun, "Ani Ma'amin" (I Believe), composed by Rabbi Ezriel Dovid Fastag in a cattle car en route to the Treblinka death camp-- it later became a survivalist anthem sung in other such hell-holes. --Christina Roden
