A Missed Opportunity.......2007-03-25
But her fan base is so small and select, even illegal mp3's were rarely found on the web.
It is a shame that this reissue didn't include any supplimental material or bonus tracks. If anyone actually remembers the hit "Pilot of the Airways" they will be disappointed because the album version is very different from the single that played on the radio. The should have at least added the single version.
I wish real audiophile label had released the reissue. Compared to the wonderful reissues of artists like Chad & Jeremy Of Cabbages & Kings, Harper's Bizarre Anything Goes or The Free Design You Could Be Born Again, this is a disappointment.

Pure beauty.......2005-09-06
The result: "Pure," an album that is reminiscent of early Sarah Brightman, back when she did folk songs and showtunes. Westenra sticks close to her classical sound with songs like the delicate "In Trutina" and the traditional New Zealand song "Pokarekare Ana," which is rendered with the backing of a a rather muddled male chorus and some swelling strings.
However, Westenra doesn't neglect more modern songs, and she does well in classical pop as well as straightforward classical. The big difference seems to be a bit of synth and a delicate guitar melody, in songs like the charming "Beat of Your Heart" and dreamy "Why Painted the Moon Black?" It's a smooth, thoroughly sweet crossover effect.
Westenra also eschews the usual round of classical-pop songs, like "Nella Fantasia." I love that song, but it's been done so many times. Instead, she opts for Maori lullabies, Vivaldi ballads, the neglected "Mummer's Dance" and the orchestral cathedral grandeur of "Benedictus." She even covers Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," adding a modern feel to the finale.
That is not to say that every choice is an excellent one. "Wuthering Heights" has Westenra trying to sound more Bush-ian, while "Amazing Grace" is too simple vocally. Aside from those, her choices of song are excellent -- rich, uplifting and beautiful, and backed by a wide range of orchestral musicians, especially the strings.
There is also an accompanying EP, in which Westenra covers four Christmas ballads, and does them all justice. Her vocals are well suited to the dignified lyrics of songs like "The Mummer's Dance" and "Silent Night," although a bit less for the still-lovely "Mary Did You Know" and "Away in a Manger."
Her vocals themselves are not operatic, but they are strong, clear and sweet, without pretensions or dramatic flourishes. The effect is stunning, more given to magic and sweetness than to keeping to classical standards. Since this was recorded when Westenra was only sixteen, one wonders how good she'll be in ten years.
Despite comparisons to Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra is more like Sarah Brightman -- a sweet-voiced singer, straddling the fence between classical and pop. An enchanting experience.

Amazon.com essential recording
Leonard Bernstein's collaboration with Betty Comden and Adolph Green on Wonderful Town is one of his great Broadway triumphs, filled with memorable music and great lyrics. And the screwball tale of two fish-out-of-water small-town sisters in NYC (based on the play My Sister Eileen by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov) still sounds comical and fresh, despite the fact that it was written in the '50s and set in the '30s. Up until now, the 1958 television cast recording was the disc to have: a slightly embellished version of the original cast recording starring Rosalind Russell. The strong cast on this 1999 studio recording is every bit as impressive. Audra McDonald shines as Eileen during "A Little Bit in Love," Kim Criswell is a fine Ruth (though less memorable than Russell), and Thomas Hampson--a baritone best known for his work on the opera stage--is great as Ruth's gruff editor, Bob Baker. Simon Rattle's orchestrations are grand, yet quirky, a perfect match for Bernstein's score. It's easy to recommend a disc that has so many great vocal moments: "Conga!," "My Darlin' Eileen," "Conversation Piece," and "Pass the Football" (sung by Brent Barrett), to name a few. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
A crossover Wonderful Town far from Broadway.......2005-10-07
Simon Rattle startled Berlin by taking this same Wonderful Town to the Philharmonie as a gala performance. HOw in the world did they react? This performance is not much like real Broadway. Listen to just a few moments of the original cast recording with Rosalind Russell or the current NY revival with Donna Murphy, and you'll sense how many fish are out of water here.
Rattle does the best, conducting with real verve and an almost-good-enough grasp of the Boradway-swing idiom Bernstein was writing in. Eveyrone else is too obviously trying to sound like something they're not. Audra McDonald is a too-throaty Eileen, Kim Criswell an edgy, noisy Ruth, Thomas Hampson a stiffly operatic editor, Robert Baker. Altogether, this CD is an energetic but ersatz attempt to take Broadway where Broadway don't want to go.
Kim Criswell and Audra McDonald as the Sherwood sisters!.......2004-07-08
Criswell has the perfect brassy voice to sing the scores of Broadway's golden classics (she's also luminous on the '91 studio album of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN), and she fits the material of TOWN to a tee. Her spin on Ruth is well worth your time and money, especially her fetching "100 Easy Ways" and showstopping "Conga!". And, as with the ANNIE GET YOUR GUN album, she's once again paired with Thomas Hampson, who plays Ruth's love interest Bob Baker (he played Frank opposite her Annie Oakley).
Audra McDonald is likewise the perfect Eileen, perhaps offering up the definitive "A Little Bit in Love", and proves she's a comical cutup with "My Darlin' Eileen" as well as "Wrong-Note Rag". Brent Barrett is sadly under-used in the role of football-mad Wreck.
Conductor Simon Rattle gives the album a cracking pace which never slackens or drags. A top studio album which is enlivened no end by its perfectly-realised cast.
TOPS!.......2001-06-09
The lyrics of Betty Comden and Adolph Green are some of their best. The witty duo came back to Broadway for this show, their first reunion with Bernstein since the success of "On The Town" almost 10 years before. They had very recently written the wildly successful "Singin' In The Rain" in Hollywood and with "Wonderful Town" they (& the entire creative team) conquered New York City.
This CD, to my mind, is a heck of alot better in almost every way than the original cast recording which starred Rosalind Russell. Russell, of course, could not sing and although her role is heavy on comedy and light on music, Kim Criswell comes off better: she is funny & touching as well as caustic and light-handed as well as tough. Russell sounds angry and almost sullen throughout...also quite mature. Add to this, the fact that Criswell has a sensational singing voice. As her love interest,Thomas Hampson, one of our finest operatic baritones, knows exactly how to lighten his voice to sing musical comedy and does it beautifully. On the Russell CD, George Gaines merely sounds old and terribly fancy, like a serious singer who is slumming. Although Edith Adams is fine as "Eileen," Audra McDonald (a 3-time Tony winner, herself) is even better in the role of the girl that all New York City wants to woo. Brent Barrett brings his gorgeous voice, as well as comic skills to his one song as the football-playing dunce, "Wreck."
The sound on this 1999 recording is superb. The conductor, Sir Simon Rattle, throws himself into Bernstein's score with verve and shows exactly how much he loves American jazz and Broadway.
There are many comic numbers, all of which hit the mark, but I must mention that "A Little Bit In Love" and "A Quiet Girl" and "It's Love" have got to be three of the sweetest, cleverest, most charming "love" songs in any musical. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
An addicting recording.......2001-02-22

Just take it as read that Anne Sofie von Otter is in her usual captivating form. Her legions of fans needn't think twice before acquiring this fascinating new album. What, though, of the music itself? Pianist and composer Cécile Chaminade, born in Paris in 1857, is known to aficionados as a composer of piano miniatures, a fact reflected in what has crept into the recording catalogue over the years. Here, though, are the fruits of pianist Bengt Forsberg's enthusiasm for the songs. And irresistible they are, too. How on earth have such imaginative, charming, elegant, and beautifully crafted melodies (all on the subject of amour) escaped widespread acknowledgement for so long? There's a wide range of moods, from the bubbling "Malgré Nous" and the whimsical "L'Amour captif" to the passionate "Te souviens-tu?" and the reflective, bittersweet "Ma première lettre." As you might expect from a pianist-composer, the accompaniments are delightful, a fact relished to the full by Forsberg. Von Otter identifies with every phrase (barring the odd rather unseemly scoop) and emotion. Various short pieces for violin and piano, and two pianos, provide an engagingly performed bonus. --Andrew GreenCustomer Reviews:
SONGS OF INNOCENCE.......2005-05-21
The 25 love songs here are, with only one exception unless my ears deceive me, in major keys. The only poet whose name is familiar to me is Ronsard, and the sentiments are chaste and asexual from start to finish. Despite that they manage to sound very Parisian and ooh-la-la. They are not pale and maidenly but full of high spirits and energy. There are no dark shadows even in the minor-key number, and not a hint of the worldly-wisdom of Jane Austen. The piano parts are boldly written and occasionally quite demanding, and there is also a violin obbligato in the Minuet. In addition we are given three violin/piano duos (one arranged by Kreisler) and three slightly larger works for two pianos, in which it would be possible to hear the idiom of Saint-Saens but not for certain.
Anne Sofie von Otter's expression in the photographs will tell you at a glance how she intends to go about the songs. Her voice is nothing like Piaf's of course, and the songs would not bring the house down at the Paris Olympia, but she gets as near to that style as artistic integrity allows. Her French sounds very good indeed to me, and she gives Chaminade everything she has got, all vivacity, extroversion and joie-de-vivre. Chaminade seems to have nothing to regret either.
The other artists distinguish themselves thoroughly. The feel of enjoyment about this recital comes through as strongly from Bengt Forsberg's vigorous and dexterous piano-playing as from the singer herself. The violin parts are done very well, joining in the general mood, and there is a fine sturdy contribution on the second piano from Peter Jablonski. Everything about this disc delighted me from start to finish. The recorded sound is just about ideal for the purpose, and even the liner note is very good. Full texts of the songs are of course provided, with English translation and German Uebersetzung. One of the songs proclaims `Je voudrais etre une fleur'. It's a bit late now, but I sometimes wonder whether innocence doesn't have more to be said for it than we are vectored into believing in these enlightened days.
Anne Sofie brings Chaminade's songs to light and life!.......2004-03-20
Delightful.......2003-12-10
The artistry of von Otter, is captivating, and Forsberg clearly has an affinity for Chaminade's romantic French music.
It is easy to record and sell the tried and true, but Anne Sofie von Otter and Bengt Forsberg (and DG) have done something risky in recording Chaminade's music. She is not Mozart. At the time of this writing this recording ranked 38,201 on Amazon.com's sale ranking system. And so, perhaps it will not payoff for the artists and the company involved. Perhaps this CD will not be available for long. Perhaps. But IT IS available NOW, and so I encourage anyone who reads this to find a way to hear this delightful music in these nearly perfect performances.
I highly recommend it.
Musical Archaeology of a Very High Order.......2002-05-30
Fortunately for us she is instead singing the lovely songs of the undeservedly obscure Cecile Chaminade, whose exquisite and entirely retrograde songs are given their due and more in these sensitive and heartfelt performances. Several cheers at least should be given for the worthy contributions of pianists Bengt Forsberg and Peter Jablonski (the former on both song accompaniments and the instrumental tracks that end the album) as well for Nils-Erik Sparf on violin.
This collection is just the thing for anyone fond of intelligent singing, sentimental poetry, or music that aims to warm a tired heart. It is most of all for anyone who knows, with Mlle. Chaminade, that one might someday forget one's first love letter, but never the feeling that inspired it...

fine studio "West Side Story".......2006-10-21
Michael Ball and Barbara Bonney play the doomed lovers Tony and Maria. Ball, a musical theatre veteran, easily slips into the material and performs it handsomely. Barbara Bonney, an opera singer best-known for her peerless Mozart soprano roles, seems a little unsteady treading in a different style of music (but the role of Maria is quite suited to an operatic soprano voice). On the whole, Ball and Bonney make quite a team and the recording flatters them both immensely.
LaVerne Williams, mezzo soprano, again displays why it's sometimes very hard for an opera singer to try adapting their voices to another genre of music. The role of Anita is written and best performed by a fiery belter, not the tranquil mezzo that Ms Williams uses on this recording. "America" comes across as a whisper rather than a scream, and "A Boy Like That", grief-stricken Anita's verbal attack on Maria, is not all that it could have been.
This recording features quite a lot of the dance and ballet music, and some snippets of dialogue to indicate the progression of the story. This is arguably Leonard Bernstein's greatest gift to the musical theatre, filled with haunting and sweeping melodies, coupled with Stephen Sondheim's earliest of lyrics.
Although it's not the best recording of the score, you could do a lot worse than this WEST SIDE STORY.

That's The Truth.......2006-03-29
Monica Stucchi was only the model imagine and nothing else, she didn't sing in these songs, not even back vox.
Dora Carofiglio (Novecento) Sung "The Night", "Get Closer" and "It's so easy", Simona Zanini (Radiorama, Doctor's Cat) sung all the other tracks and wrote all the lyrics herself!
This is the truth, many people still hope that Monica duet in some songs or something like that, it makes me laugh!
The album features the big hits "The Night" and "Get Closer" both successfully in Europe, the other songs are very nice, but didn't get the attention they need, probably because people noticed the voice was very different, by the way a good album, romantic!
She sings some, she fakes some.......2006-01-11
Classic Slow Italo Disco music.......2005-12-15
The huge European hit single "The Night" and it's identi-kit follow up "Get Closer" are both here, together with Valerie's 3rd single "It's So Easy". The style is Italo or Eurodisco, but at a very sloooow BPM so it's quite dreamy and actually rather hard to dance to. This style has been called "Romantic Dance" and even "Sleaze Energy" (!!) by some Italo enthusiasts, and it's hard to find any other contemporary music style to compare it to, although other Italo artists have come close, such as "American Love" by Rose Laurens, and "It's You" by Sheila Stewart (try finding THAT one on CD, now!). The rest of this CD feature Valerie's rather strange take on the King Arthur legend which made up her 1986 themed album "The Legend".
Valerie Dore is actually a stage name, and singing duties were apparently swapped between two different singers, so it's hard to tell if the idea was the singer's own, or just a project created by some producer who was in need of a vocalist. I don't even know if the attractive young lady who appears on this cover as well as in TV appearances is actually responsible for the vocals. The songs vary in style from slow-dance to ballads and a couple of instrumentals, and although some of them seem weak on first listening, the album actually stands up quite well as a whole after a few listens. Sadly, if anything let's the music down it is the "Valerie Dore" vocal performance, which is rather thin and strained, plus her thick accent really chews up most of the English lyrics.
My only disappointment is that ZYX did not include the 12" single versions of "King Arthur" and "Lancelot" on here, instead of the short album mixes, plus Valerie also released a great single called "Wrong Direction" which is quite hard to find and would have made this collection even better. Instead, two really ghastly "club" mixes of "The Night" have been tacked on, which were obviously done a long time after the orginal time of release and are not in the spirit of the original sound at all. But hey, its the only Valerie Dore CD there is, so you ain't got much choice. A good basic compilation.
Arthurian Disco - I kid you not!.......2002-05-07
The music for the Arthurian-themed songs is by Marco Tansini and it's disco all right but it's "Italo Disco" -- more melodic and less aggressive than American dancemusic from the 80s. Imagine a cross between CAMELOT and FLASHDANCE and you've got the idea. The production values are not all that great but there are some bright and attractive dancetunes here as well as a couple of romantic and evocative slow songs.
The lyrics by Simona Zanini confure up a medieval never-never land of knights in shining armor, magic, and romance. "Lancelot" was the big hit single from the album, but there are other songs that I personally like better.
"The Wizard" paints a vibrant picture of Merlin at the height of his powers, full of confidence, exuberance, and life -- far from the stereotype of the doddering old man! This would be a great song for anyone wishing to tune into the youthful/Mercurial energies of The Magician archetype.
Arthur's relationship with Morgause/Morgaine is not spelled out but is hinted at in "The Magic Rain," in which somebody (Merlin?) catches ominous glimpses of the web of spells being woven around the king ("I see shadows fight alone on the ground, I see maidens calling out with no sound, I see signs in the air telling me what I've found...").
"Guinevere" is a dreamy reflection on the troubling beauty of the troubled queen ("Guinevere your eyes are like the sun... can they see through the shadows?"). Musically it reminds me of "Melody Fair" by the Bee Gees.
"The Sword In The Heart" is a love duet that sounds a lot like a Lionel Ritchie song. The theme of pain and betrayal and the image of the sword in the heart recall the scenes of Arthur's betrayal by Guinevere and Lancelot, and Merlin's betrayal by Morgan in EXCALIBUR.
And the cycle comes to an end with "The End of Story," as we close the storybook and come back to (sigh) real life.
In contrast to most disco songs, Zanini's lyrics are memorable for their poetry and imagery. Unfortunately, you can hardly understand them because of Valerie Dore's thick accent (she's from Morocco). My wiseguy roommate says that when she sings about King Arthur, it sounds like she's saying "King Ethel!"
And while Dore's voice is pretty enough -- it's nice to hear somebody sing instead of scream -- I find it rather thin, girlish, and unimpressive. Quite honestly, I think these songs would sound better if they were sung by somebody else! In my opinion, the strong point of this album is the songs, not the performance.
The non-Arthurian songs that fill out the album have standard disco lyrics and they don't do much for me. But I understand they were big hits in European dance clubs in the mid-80s.

Classic Radio Comedy.......2007-05-17
I enjoyed this CD immensely but am truly looking forward to ordering the box set with all of their material. If you are not familiar with Hudson & Landry, this is a good place to start without investing a lot of money. Now, if you enjoy radio comedy as I do, we have a local D.J. that's gone nation wide that you should check out, Roy D. Mercer! Greatest Fits: The Best of How Big'a Boy Are Ya? He's what I'd call "red neck humor". The skits are actual telephone calls that he's made on-the-air out of the Tulsa classic rock station and has some "bone to pick" with the unsuspecting person on the other end. He usually threatens to come down there are "kick ye *arse*" and a few other colorful analogies. Some of his words are bleeped from the radio but he's not over-the-top vulgar as are so many stand-up comedians these days. So if live radio comedy is your thing, this is a good one that follows the example set by the masters, Hudson & Landry.
One last trivia fact about this Hudson & Landry release is that the old Dore record label was commissioned for this pressing of this collection. I hadn't heard any thing from that label since the original "Percolator" song of the late 50's.
"Hi, Ace!!! Love your cufflinks!!!".......2005-07-26
Of course, the various "Ajax" bits are timeless, except for the political correctness police having issues with the portrayal of the drunk, and of course, the "Obscene Phone Bust." These were bits that my college buddies and I would listen to along with Cheech and Chong, and soon phrases such as "Hi Ace!" and "Boy, I couldn't live like that" became part of our vocabularies.
Their humor, while slightly racier than what you would see from comics on TV at the time (early 70's), was probably overshadowed by the emerging rawness of Carlin, Pryor and others, so by today's standards Hudson and Landry could probably be considered extremely tame. But being "tame" doesn't mean it's not funny, and this stuff is hilarious.
The only reason I give this collection only 4 stars instead of 5 is for the disc itself and NOT the humor. The edited versions are a disappointment, and I think the collection could have included tracks such as "Ajax Pet Store" ("Here, Fred!") and the pair of Kearsarge bits.
If you're interested in discovering some truly underrated comedy, treat yourself to Hudson and Landry. This collection is a good place to start, but if you can find the original issues, by all means buy them and take a nice ride on "Ajax Airlines."

A blast from the past.......2003-04-15
Of course, the morning people in less conservative, anyway in the 7o's Pittsburgh (Like Jim Quinn and Obrien and Gary-who have a CD of their bits, a local version.) Played them quite heavily. Next to Cheech and Chong, they had to be the best.
