Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

5 out of 5 stars Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20

After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-10

Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

Some Christian mainstream acts spend entire careers aiming for crossover appeal. Call Brian Littrell a little different because he is going against the grain. This Backstreet Boy has traded--for a moment at least--international glitz for a trip back home to his roots, spiritual roots that is, with Welcome Home. It's a journey that clearly resonates strongly with Littrell because he has released an album full of depth, reflection, diversity, and celebration. At least partial credit goes to producer Dan Muckala who has taken a vocal talent, stretched his boundaries, and combined with the artist to usher out a beautifully rich-sounding release. Starting firmly with his proclamation of faith ("My Answer Is You"), Littrell pours his heart and soul into a wonderful collection of material that ranges from hard-edged pop ("I'm Alive") to R&B/light jazz ("We Lift You Up") to classic Southern gospel ("Jesus Loves Me"). Littrell also offers several nods to his Backstreet days with his silky smooth vocals on "You Keep Givin' Me" and "Grace of My Life." There's a lot to be excited about with this release but perhaps two of the highlights come with the gripping "Gone Without Goodbye" and "Angels and Heroes." The former is a heart-wrenching tale of sharing the burden of grief with those who have lost loved ones tragically, while the latter builds on the ministry motif by suggesting that all of us are wired to be angels, if we so choose, in this lifetime. Littrell's transparency of heart and passionate vocals will make believers even out of the most hardened cynic. Welcome home Brian, we're glad you're back. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-21

This album is amazing, Brian has such a wonderful voice that he does so wonderful on all the songs. The best track on the whole album would either be Welcome home or Grace of my Life. He has come such a long way from BSB that he is like a different person. One of the best christian albums of all time. Would recommend it to anyone no matter the age, anyone can get something out of this cd, the message on some of the songs brings tears to your eyes. Buy it you will not regret this purchase, not in the slightest

5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2007-03-22

5 out of 5 stars LOOOOVE IT!!!.......2007-01-25

Okay, I will start by saying that THIS IS ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE CDS. Brian has always been my favorite vocalist of the Backstreet Boys, and he really shows off his amazing voice on this album. I LOVE almost every song on it, and the other two that I don't completely love are still very nice to listen to. My favorites are "Welcome Home", "Gone Without Goodbye", "Over My Head", and, especially, "Grace Of My Life". They have meaningful messages, which, paired with amazing harmonies and beautiful intstrumentals, create one of the most wonderful collections of songs I have ever been aquainted with. "Gone Without Goodbye" is so sad, it makes me want to go out and become, like, Superwoman or something so I can stop all that hurting. And then there's "Grace Of My Life", my favorite on the CD, and one of my favorite songs of all. I love how Brian expresses so well how much loves his wife! (Wow that was a freaky coincidence, just as I was writing that, "Grace Of My Life" starting playing on my iTunes...)
The only other thing I can say is, this is an AMAZING CD. If I could, I would rate it 1000 stars! BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT! You will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-18

I really love this cd. I thought that each song was carefully thought out and well considered. I'm glad they didn't feel compelled to do the standard album "twelve song package" but just left it where it was.

The vocals are great, the lyrics are great, the music is amazing! A man full of talent, he is an inspiration to Christians trying to live in the real world. Here is a man who has had international stardom to the ultimate level, and still stayed committed to the Lord through it all.

Great album, great work.

4 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise!.......2007-01-12

I received this CD for Christmas and I didn't even recognize the name Brian Littrell until someone told me that he was a former Backstreet Boys. I took it at face value and listened to see how he was as a solo artist. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the whole CD is a Contemporary Christian album which made me especially glad since I am a Christian. I was very impressed by the lyrics and thoughtfulness of each song. Notably Joy Williams and Mark Harris co-wrote on a couple of songs. Overall, I thought this album was great and it's a great addition in the Christian music market!

5 out of 5 stars Interstellar travel in your headphones........2007-05-31

Well, Stargate SG.1 has finally ended after 10 seasons, and this soundtrack CD covers only the first two. I think there's room for a new CD or two, and hopefully the Stargate SG.1 people will get around to creating one.

Anyway, I've listened to this CD once so far and I was very impressed. The music really is enjoyable on its own, and I found myself listening to the Cold Lazerus music twice before I continued throught the rest of the CD.

Finally, don't think there isn't much music on this CD because of the small nunber of tracks. Many of these tracks are six to ten minutes long.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Music Album.......2007-05-12

Great CD throughout. It's a shame the show is being cancelled after 10 years but this music helps to keep the memory on.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 1st Music release.......2004-10-24

The best of Stargate SG-1 is infact a 9 track compilation of the 1st 2 seasons of the TV show. It's really not the best of Stargate. I rather enjoyed the 1st release namely called Music of Stargate SG-1 and the actual movie music-score. However I still enjoyed the music from several episodes of the 2nd season, most notable being the music suite of Hathor.

A fan of the TV show should be pleasantly surprised by the suites in this CD. It won't disapoint.

5 out of 5 stars one for the fans.......2004-05-07

This CD is really one for the fans. If you've not watched Stargate SG-1 before, then it will be very limited in its' appeal.
I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2004-02-23

This is a great CD. Just listing to it makes me feel like I'm watching the show.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-31

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

4 out of 5 stars Toad on the Road.......2007-02-04

Toad The Wet Sprocket were riding at their peak when this concert took place. "Fear" became their biggest seller and the top forty welcomed "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean." This being a homecoming concert, both the band and their Santa Barbara fans were stoked, and the show comes off as a hero's welcome.

The band has always been underrated, and the compositions here (from the first three albums) show a lot of strength. Glen Phillips' gifts as a song-writer have never been truly recognized. While he (and the band, who co-wrote the majority of the material) did cultivate a folkish and, even at a certain level, mellow sound, there is a dark streak to many of their best songs. "One Little Girl" and "Hold Her Down" are unflinching takes on abuse, while "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" may be the most beautiful song to never hit the top-40. They were also not shy from experimenting, as "Butterflies" shows. (Love the Beatles quote at the end!)

All in all, "Welcome Home: Live" shows Toad The Wet Sprocket in full gale as a band. A band that toughed it out through years on the road and a couple of poorly selling albums to develop the chemistry and the tenacity that they were still there when the lucky break occurred. Along with the "P.S." best of collection, this CD is a terrific representation of the band at their toadiest. Incidentally, Phillip's post-toad solo work is quite good. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars It's live Toad, what else do you need to know?.......2005-12-06

Oh man, what a gem for fans. This live disc from 1992 is nearly flawless. It does only draw from the first three albums, but that's exactly why I love it. It has numerous songs from both their debut and my favorite album "Pale", and roughly half the disc is from "Fear", which is their hit-heavy and most popular album. Plus this is 19 tracks and 74 minutes long. The songs stick to the originals for the most part, but being live gives them a nice fresh sound. Glen speaks at a few points, but keeps to jamming for the most part. I really have no complaints with the tracklist, but in a perfect world this would also include "Covered In Roses" and "High On A Riverbed". Still, it's an excellent live record, and a must for Toad-heads.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Toad album for their long-time fans........2005-04-08

I don't know how else to put it. This album is amazing. It captures Toad at their best, when it comes to live performances. It's a shame these guys didn't get more recognition.. they much more than deserved it.

Anyway, as I said, this is the boys at their best. Everything is spot on. Every song sounds just as good as their studio counterparts, and some are even better. The emotion and musicianship put into each song are unparalleled by almost any of today's top bands.

If you are a bigger fan of Toad's later works (Dulcinea and Coil sessions), you may not enjoy this as much, since this was a performance from 92. Naturally, it encompasses their first 3 albums. You might want give the samples a good listen or 2 before you decide on making this purchase.

But if you are a long time fan, and/or if you enjoy their early albums, you MUST BUY THIS NOW!! It is that good. I bought it about a month ago, and it is has never left my cd changer since...

This is the Toad album I have been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Great live show from one of rocks's most overlooked bands.......2005-03-31

Finally, a live CD from Toad the Wet Sprocket. It's about time! And it surely doesn't disappoint. This band never got half the credit or recognition they deserved. But this CD is one treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to follow them throughout the years. My only complaint is that "Good Intentions" is not here. But that's all right. The outstanding quality of the album as a whole speaks for itself, and is reason enough to get this. If you're new to Toad the Wet Sprocket, I would recommend getting their studio albums first and then picking up this one. And for the long-time fan, get this NOW. Toad may be no more, but they sure left behind some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Gem-A MUST buy!!!.......2005-01-29

This album offers something for everyone, whether it be the seasoned fan or a newcomer to Toad's music. The versions of All I Want, Fall Down, and I Won't Take These Things for Granted are stellar, and some of the songs, like Know Me, are augmented with some new lyrics and intros. It's a perfect representation of what this band was capable of, and makes me wish they were still together. There are some neat little anecdotes from Glen (Is It for Me?, Brother), and the crowd is supportive, but not overbearing. This has to be one of the finest live recordings I've encountered recently. Even if you just remember Toad the Wet Sprocket from the early 90s, pick up this CD. You won't regret it. I can only hope there will be others.

4 out of 5 stars didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22

I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.

3 out of 5 stars Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20

If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.

Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22

My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.

"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.

All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!

4 out of 5 stars a lost gem.......2004-10-14

i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.

1 out of 5 stars Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19

BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

I bought this CD to have some authentic English Renaissance music in my collection,
and fell in love with it. The Earl of Oxford March is particularly appealing.

5 out of 5 stars They don't come much better........2005-08-23

The incomparable Canadian Brass make this album a rare treat. From the first notes of Holborne's "Galliard" to the magnificent complexity of Byrd's "Fitzwilliam Suite", their renditions are sheer delight. The music is both relaxing and enjoyably stimulating. Repeated hearings allow the listener to discover some hidden turn or embellishment that was not noticed before, or to appreciate again the antiphonal and complementary interplay of the instruments in the antique harmonies they create. A most enjoyable recording.

5 out of 5 stars The finest brass ensembles all on 1 album.......2002-01-31

I got this CD quite a while ago, and I still listen to it almost daily. Best at night in a candlelit room while it's raining sipping fine wine and reminising of the Renaissance festival! (wierd, I know. But that's just me) If you have an interest in this time period, you won't regret buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting spin on English Renaissance Music.......2000-08-09

The composers of 16th century England were able to take the music of other countries and produce something uniquely their own. So, too, has Canadian Brass taken English Renaissance music and made it into something wonderfully different. Immediately accessible (and acceptable) to modern ears, these tunes are a splendid treat. Almans and Galliards take on a whole new flavor when done entirely by brass instruments.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound. Definitely a must for your collection........1999-11-05

I listen to this CD about once a week while riding to work so that I can keep my sanity. It was a gift from my daughters that keeps on giving.

Aimee Mann's resurgence as a solo artist with the Magnolia soundtrack returned scrutiny to her early work with Boston's 'Til Tuesday. There are moments on the group's second album ("On Sunday," "David Denies," "No One Is Watching You Now") that contain the sense of romance and loss that fuel her solo work. However, the period production is not always in sympathy with the sentiments. Cavernous echo and other glossy, mid-'80s touches nearly overwhelm the songs. It's a testament to Mann's skills that some songs shine through. Welcome Home will ultimately prove pleasing to those who came of age in the '80s, as well as Mann completists. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Their 2nd Best Album.......2007-07-17

I would recommend "Everything's Different Now" over this one, but if you already have that, this makes a great second choice. The best tracks are indeed the more popular hits, but songs such as "On Sunday" and "David Denies" are also great album cuts.

5 out of 5 stars Til Tuesday.......2007-06-11

Excellent work by the Til Tuesday group. Aimee Mann's emotion comes out in these songs. I lost this one and HAD to replace it, my collection wouldn't be complete without it. I purchased the Aimee Mann solo CD with a little disappointment (I can't even remember the name of it). I don't listen to it at all, but Welcome Home is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A courageous artistic move... and an outstanding pop album........2005-09-04

Til Tuesday, the former band of the now legendary singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, will forever be remembered for their unique debut single ("Voices Carry", perhaps one of the most striking songs of the 80s).However, there was much more to this band than meets the eye. As demonstrated on their sadly overlooked sophomore album "Welcome Home", this band was powered by a unique artist (Aimee Mann) backed by solid musicians that seemed willing to take chances. It would have been easy to try to come up with a sequel to "Voices Carry", but what we got instead was an album filled with personal songs and musical settings that were totally untypical of the era in which the album was released. The moment you'll hear the second song on the album (the brilliant masterpiece "Coming Up Close", one of Mann's finest compositions ever), you will know how special this album is. This was the first pop song of the 80s to heavily feature acoustic guitars, a few years before Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega or Melissa Etheridge became millionaires with their good old six strings. And the rest of the album is just as good : "Have mercy" and "No-one is watching you now" are heartbreaking tales with a haunting melody and an achingly expressive vocal, "On Sunday" is a smouldering uptempo number that slowly builds up to an intense finale, "Will she just fall down" is reminiscent of the Beatles, and songs like "Angels never call" and "David denies" add layers after layers of floating notes until it all becomes an aural reverie.

Don't look for a weak spot on this album, for you won't find one. Some songs don't have the same emotional depth or musical originality ("Lovers day" and "What about love", for instance), but they remain powerful compositions nonetheless. If there's only one thing wrong with this album, it's the poor reaction it got from the record-buying public, which clearly wasn't ready in 1986 for this kind of vintage, song-oriented music; the first single "What about love" created very little waves, and the two follow-ups ("On Sunday" and "Coming up close") went totally unnoticed. But now that Til Tuesday's good fortunes on the charts don't matter anymore, music lovers will be well advised to check out this courageous album.

Aimee Mann's loyal fans will have just as much fun (re)discovering this album; it became clear with this album that she was a truly unique artist, and she started to find her voice and her persona as a songwriter on this album. The eventual demise of Til Tuesday eventually allowed her to spread her wings and to make the kind of music that she wanted to make, with no regards to commercial conventions. Saying no to these conventions and expectations with "Welcome Home", Aimee set a path for herself as an artist that she would stick with for over twenty years : the path of an artist whose vision and creativity wouldn't be restrained by trends. It was a rare quality in the 80s... and it's still just as rare today.

4 out of 5 stars All these years later, it still sounds great.......2005-03-16

Perhaps it's nostalgia, but I slid this disc into the player the other night and it still sounded wonderful. 'Til Tuesday will never be remembered as one of the seminal bands of the '80s, but anyone who appreciates the how music of that era embraced a stripped-down simplicity without losing melody will appreciate it.

Today, the disc reveals some of the chronic production stylings of the 80s - its final mix was overcompressed and, as a result, tends to produce a Phil Spector-ish wall-of-sound feeling with minimal instrumentation. A little overdone, in this post-Nirvana/hip hop world. Even so, it shouldn't detract new listeners from Aimee Mann's lovely voice, sense of melody and heartfelt lyrics.

Its uber-romanticism might turn some listeners off - to their own loss. This is lovely, wistful pop music, and I always thought this band should have been more successful than it was. There were other bands of the era that had more of an impact, but few that consistently created such a beautiful noise.

5 out of 5 stars An 80's pop\alt classic.......2004-08-06

While going through a box of old cassettes I re-discovered this collection of songs. I had forgotten how timely and powerfull Mann's music and lyrics were. While looking for this CD on line I found a great review by David Medsker at the popmatters website and I didn't feel alone in my memory of Welcome Home.

So why write a review on a disc almost 20 years old? Medsker reminded me that there are some artists who don't get the acclaim yet still produce timeless music. This disc carried me through a transition off of a 5 year relationship that lasted from my freshman year of high school to my sophmore year of college. Every word of every lyric speaks to an emotion that I experienced during this stage. David Denies, Have Mercy, No One is Watching You Now and Coming Up Close all have a certain perspective that offers sympathy for failed love rather than simply detailing it. Aimee's vocal gift is one which elevates the words to something tangible and not just someone's story. The power of a songwriter is to make the listener feel as if the song is for everyone. I can't say that we have all been there but I would be willing to wager that if you haven't experienced it, you know someone who has and Aimee will touch that chord in you that evokes the pain and hence will make it seem as if it was your experience.

I wouldn't classify this as your typical 80's bubblegum new wave or pop. This has a more mature sound which works well with the more mature lyrics. You will get your 80's synth in songs such as Lover's Day and for some this may be a tough sell but there is enough subtle guitar work to carry you through. I can't recommend this disc enough

Bryn Terfel is the most recent in a long line of great Welsh singers (and certainly one of the greatest)--a people who proverbially are "born with music in the blood and poetry in the soul." Here, he sings the songs of his native Wales: hymns, folksongs, art songs, tender lullabies, yearning songs of love and homesickness, and heroic, defiant patriotic songs--including the Welsh National Anthem, which opens and closes the program. Terfel's voice, flowing out effortlessly like a golden stream, is phenomenal for its incomparable beauty, its range of dynamics, its inflection, and its intensity; his expressiveness is simpler and more natural than usual, and seems really to come straight from his soul. In honor of another great Welsh tradition, two splendid male choirs accompany him; in the fine orchestra, the English horn and harp soloists are particularly striking. The only false note on this heartwarming disc is the lush, garish orchestration, which runs counter to the ingenuous spirit of the songs and often almost resembles a soundtrack. The prime example is the lovely lullaby that's popular in English as "All Through the Night." Terfel sings it with wonderful simplicity; the orchestration is out of a grade-B movie. No wonder, therefore, that the more magical moments are those in which Terfel sings alone with a cappella chorus, harps, or piano; especially in the quiet, inward songs. The accompanying booklet is done beautifully, with stunning photographs of the Welsh countryside, a brief account of Welsh history and music, and texts in both Welsh and English. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gwlad! Gwlad!.......2007-06-03

I saw Bryn Terfel sing Mozart at Lyric Opera in Chicago--unforgettable stage presence and energy, but I was more taken with his performances of English songs I'd heard on the radio. On this disc the full range of his musical talent is on display, alternately belting out nationalist songs, then singing hymns and traditional pieces with amazing tenderness. There are moments where the arrangements are a bit cheesy but the choirs are fantastic and Terfel is in fabulous voice throughout. Being a DG production the sonics are warm and natural. Overall, a beautiful addition to Terfel's wide ranging discography.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2007-05-12

I only bought this CD because I wanted a good recording of Cvm Rhondda. Well I got that and much more. Myfanwy is just wonderful. I didn't know who Bryn Terfel was, but now I'm a fan.

5 out of 5 stars So Welsh!.......2006-11-10

An absolutely delightful CD just full of the most wonderful melodic welsh songs and hymns, and what can you say about Bryn's voice other than 'fabulous', rich and vibrant - rather like smooth, dark chocolate. What a wonderful Christmas gift this CD would be for someone who has exquisite taste in music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable and Uplifting CD.......2005-07-24

Bryn Terfel picked songs that meant a lot to him growing up in Wales, and also which represent the Welsh spirit. I really enjoy listening to this CD, and know you will, too! Simply beautiful and stirring melodies, sound food for both ear and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Wales.......2004-05-15

Bryn Terfel, with his magnificent baritone, sings a wonderful selection of songs that makes me wish that I was Welsh. My husband was born in Wales and this is a wonderful way for our children to know more of their heritage by listening to the Welsh language as it is sung and following the words in Welsh, then reading the translation. This CD is definitely a favorite.
