Product Description
DISSOLUTION WAGON, which takes its title from the lead song, is the 3rd album from the 52nd String Band, and includes 16 popular selections of WBTS songs. The selections are a mix of basically three types of 19th century music: military songs, parlor songs, and minstrel tunes, and ends with a period minstrel skit. The band uses original sheet music as reference material for all of the songs, which are done exactly as they were in the 1840 s, 50 s, and 60 s. Several songs on the album, such as RISING OF THE MOON, GENERAL PIKE S DIXIE, and DISSOLUTION WAGON, reflect older popular melodies to which new words were written for the times. This occurred in many instances where songs were re-adapted with changed verses, and in many cases a very popular song was changed by Northern or Southern soldiers and would thus become their song. The minstrel tunes like RING DE BANJO and GLENDY BURK became more popular around the soldiers campfire at night, as did the soldiers laments in TENTING ON THE OLD CAMPGROUND and ALL QUIET ALONG THE POTOMAC. Songs like CHEER BOYS CHEER and the jaunty GARY OWEN kept the spirits up. Many of the homefront songs like JOE CLARK and NELLY BLY became favorite dance tunes, which the band has reproduced in period style, and which are used at the Civil War dances that the band performs for around the country. The 52nd String Band has become known as The Most Entertaining Dance Band in Civil War Reenacting. This CD was released on May 7, 2002, the anniversary date of the vote by the Tennessee General Assembly to dissolve the State s ties from the Union and explore an alliance with the fledgling Confederate States of America. This vote to secede was soon overwhelmingly ratified by the state's citizens.Music Album:
