About the Artist
"Steve Ball Roadshow" music features gentle, textural, hummable songs arranged for multiple voices and interlocking acoustic guitars. Their live sets feature an exceptional blend of musical influences including Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists, Steve Reich, Kate Bush, Simon and Garfunkle, Jonatha Brooke, U2, Pete Townshend, David Byrne, Richard Thompson, the Cars, the Church, U2, Yes, and Peter Gabriel.

The Steve Ball Roadshow (SBRS) has been playing in and all around the Seattle area since 1997 in different configurations, both acoustic and electric. The current lineup features combinations of guitarists Austin-transplant Travis Hartnett, Portland-transplant Travis Metcalf, and Canadian-transplant Derek DiFilippo playing acoustic and electric guitars and basses. All members of the Roadshow sing.

CD1 "Roadshow" features fifteen original Steve Ball compositions, acoustic math-pop short story songs arranged for multiple voices, multiple guitars, drums and percussion.

CD2 "Naïve Melodies" features a stunning blend of obscure but familiar cover songs clothed in unique arrangements for multiple voices and multiple acoustic and electric guitars, drums and percussion.

CD3 "Knotwork" features fifteen instrumental ambient acoustic guitar interludes and remixed arrangements of new, historic, and select songs from the Steve Ball Roadshow live repertoire.

Highlight of this project includes a vocal version of the Yes classic "Starship Trooper" (CD2) featuring Tony Levin on NS electric bass, and an acoustic instrumental version of the same song with Tony Levin on acoustic bass (CD3).

I have a little bias since I've had the pleasure of working with Steve and other musicians appearing on these CDs for a while now. However, one of the things that particularly struck me with these recordings is how the excellent guitar work doesn't get in the way of the Music that drips from these CDs. Roadshow (CD1 of 3) has a wonderful blend of all original compositions many of which have a delightfully pop sensibility to them. Pop and Guitar Craft are rarely heard in the same sentence! Naive Melodies (CD2 of 3) is a great collection of uniquely interpreted covers from a wide range of artists from The Who to U2 to Brian Eno. I love all of these, but perhaps my favorites are Wave with the beautiful additional female vocal and Under the Milky Way with the stunning emotive E-bow lead intro. Finally, but not least, Knotwork (CD3 of 3) is an all instrumental collage. The musical textures on this CD are wonderful and at times breathtaking.

Great melding of Guitar Craft style with popular material.......2004-01-01

Roadshow was a bit surprising with its popiness (in a good way)-- especially the first few selections -- but it also got into a nice 'craft' groove later. Naive Melodies is great. A great melding of Guitar Craft style with the popular material to give consistent, valid interpretations of these songs. I particularly liked Lay My Love. What a neat mix -- even got the Church in there. I probably liked Knotwork even better than the other albums.
