Customer Reviews:
YMO re-united for the Earth Live in Japan!.......2007-06-24
This is Yellow Magic Orchestra's 2nd and probably most famous album. The first vinyl version came out in 1979, and YMO was awarded the annual grand prize for the best album of the year in Japan (1979) when the rest of the world didn't know much about computer electric pop music, something YMO called 'Techno Pop'. Germany's Kraftwerk was one of only a few other groups of this kind.
This album contains famous pieces, including 'Technopolis', which starts with a computerised voice saying 'TOKIO', written by Ryuichi SAKAMOTO ('The Last Emperor', 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence'); 'Absolute Ego Dance' (by Harry HOSONO); and probably the most famous YMO number 'Rydeen' (by Yukihiro TAKAHASHI). I personally love the YMO version of the Beatles 'Day Tripper' and the main theme 'Solid State Survivor (SSS)', in which the guitarist of Sheena & the Rokkets, Makoto AYUKAWA, takes part. By the way, SSS contains some strange electric 'coughs' and 'laughter', and a Japanese expression 'Moshi Moshi? (Hello Hello?)' can also be heard a few times. 'Rydeen' contains some 'horse running' noises too. The sound of synthesizers (especially 'Prophet 5'), synthe-drums and the futuristic melody are all amazing! But the most amazing thing is that this album was released in 1979! YMO came to the USA & Europe in 1979, even before they became famous in their home country of Japan.
FYI: YMO was re-united for one night only for the Earth Live event from Kyoto(07/07/07). They were the last group to appear on stage in Japan and played a few pieces including the legendary 'Rydeen' with a new interpretation, which you can see on YouTube.
From the golden age of analog synthesis -- don't miss it.......2007-04-09
Many of the cuts on this CD were originally released on a vinyl record called "X Multiplies", with replicated mannequins of Sakamoto, Hosono, and Takahashi on the cover, staring at the camera. It was one of the coolest covers ever! It kinda makes you miss the days when cover art was, to a large extent, what sold music. Solid State Survivor was released later.
There are many wonderful cuts on this essential YMO CD, among them "Behind The Mask", with it's incredibly tight vocoder vocal and percussion section. It's one of my three favorite songs of all time -- I am a pro musician myself with a very broad musical perspective, and I'm telling you, I never tire of "Behind The Mask". Technopoly is pretty cool too. Nearly all the tracks are excellent, but Behind The Mask remains a classic for all time.
I can't strongly enough recommend YMO's other albums, as well. It's techno rock and it doesn't get any cleaner or tighter than this.
Great synthpop album.......2006-09-23
YMO is one of the pioneers of the synthpop as well as Kraftwerk and Devo. "Solid State Survivor" is considered to be the most famous album of them. Although it was released almost 25 yeas ago, you will never feel it old-fashoned. There is a story related to this album. Although Michael Jackson offered YMO to cover "Behind the Mask", YMO refused. Later, YMO regretted because it would be included in "Thriller" the mega hit album. In 1986, "Behind the Mask" was covered by Eric Clapton with Michael Jackson's lyrics.
Important album.......2006-08-06
While as usual not everything is first rate, and also some of this album has aged quite a bit, it is one of the better and more essential YMO albums. They were quite innoveative at the time and should not be forgotten for what they were: one of the most innovative early synth groups that were working in the tradition of Kraftwerk.
Yes!.......2006-06-18
Lighten up.
Ignore the sad clown at the top. Judging music based on the production technology used at the time of it's recording is an obvious sign of ignorance and one of the pitfalls of dealing with many electronic music fans ($$$$) in general. For those of us who understand context and know how to have a good time, this album is a gem. The sound of the production on this album gives it a timelessness and the overall character of this group, specifically this album, is wonderfully idiosyncratic and just can't be replicated. There are a few filler tracks, sure. Maybe two at the most. If that bothers you, you probably need to be reminded that this is YMO and not Stockhausen. If you're looking for a landmark synthpop album... BUY IT. If you like it, give Naughty Boys a chance. It sounds a lot different, but it's a welcomed runner up.

Customer Reviews:
Better than most solo projects.......2007-06-23
Melanie Brown's second attempt at a Solo Album was a sucess. I LOVED every single song on this album. You'd be thick not to buy this.
Not good, not bad........2007-03-27
I must say that after listening the progress of Mel C, Emma, Geri, even Victoria in a few tracks I heard on the internet of her never released album, I think Mel B shows less progress doing an album like this.
LA State of Mind has both good and bad, but is not as good as many Spice albums. It has great songs such as Beautiful Girl, which I think is the best and it could have been better as a single than Today. Other great songs are Stay in bed days, LA State of Mind and Hold on. But Sweet pleasure... I hate that song as the same as Forever's "Time goes by" and Hot's "Hell no". I consider Music of the Night a copy of Geri's Mi Chico Latino because of the style (and is not as good as Geri's).
I'm going to say, this album is OK, but only for Spice Girls's fans, specially Mel B's fans.
Think "L.A.!".......2006-11-20
My how time changes things. Back in 1998, whilst touring America with former bandmates the Spice Girls, Melanie B declared that New York should've been her home. "Urban". "Raw". "Real". Adjectives she used to describe New York, while adjectives such as "tacky" & "false" described Los Angeles.
But motherhood & exposure to the nature of British celebrity must have changed Melanie's mind. Melanie now does indeed live in L.A. Though, after the madcap adventures of the Spice Girls, a divorce, a misdirected debut record, a bestseller book,& a daughter mellowed the "scary" in this spice.
"L.A. State of Mind" finds Melanie not discussing the Hollywood nature of L.A., but celebrating the warm & inviting calm it brought her. After her debut, Melanie took time between that record & this one. The sound here is radically different from "Hot", rightfully & thankfully so. Melanie was much more involved in this indie affair.
The eclecticism Melanie was known for, comes through on inspirational opener "Today", a number that is so positive, one can't help but smile. Even the subject of bad days is tackled with a Sheryl Crow affirmation feel on the bouncy "Stay In Bed Days". "If I Had My Life Again" & "In Too Deep" give the record a sturdy center, as they frankly address life & love, & celebrate them in all their confusing glory.
She's never sounded better, if at times she reaches too much, on "Beautiful Girl" & "Hold On". Hell, she smoulders on the spoken, sexy "Sweet Pleasure".
Overall, while this was not at all a commercial or critical darling in her native Britain or anywhere else for that matter, those that have heard it have come away with positive words about it. Melanie seems content & it comes across here. Honestly, with humor,& a little "spice". Forgive the pun, highly recommended!
When people look up the word "flop" in the dictionary..........2006-07-09
...they should find Melanie Brown's picture next to the definition. Is there such a thing as the post-Spice Girls curse? Apparently so, since neither Sporty, Baby, Ginger or Posh have managed to keep their musical careers afloat after the band split up. And our beloved Scary is no exception. Apart from the singles Word Up, found on the "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" soundtrack, and I Want You Back, which featured Missy Elliott, all of Mel's songs failed to inspire any kind of interest. Her debut album Hot was a flop... and LA State of Mind was an even bigger one, selling an appallingly poor 4500 copies worldwide. Why is that? Well, maybe it's because it's a very bad album? With laughable songs and really low production values? In fact, I think that this is exactly what Melanie has been missing : a good producer. I Want You Back was awesome, but only because Missy Elliott produced it. I mean, think about it: the Spice Girls were a manufactured band that worked only because their Svengali Simon Fuller is a marketing genius. As a team, they were great, but individually, they all suck, because none of them has the talent to make it on her own. Except maybe for Mel C, but I digress. I read somewhere that Melanie Brown has retired from the music business. Maybe it's just as well, because it seems that nobody wants her there anyway.
A Nice Surprise!.......2006-06-18
This purchase was a nice musical surprise. I do have Melanie's previous effort "Hot" and was impressed with the production quality, but not with it's inconsistency in musical texture. There seemed to be a lack of a theme...whereas her newest cd seems to have a lot more of a thematic flow. The production of L.A. State of Mind is so different, that it's hard to register as Mel B at times, however, it shows her personal and musical growth and her ability to diversify and try something new. Worth a listen!

"Simply a Stunner".......2006-07-21
Ideal for an opera lover, or for anyone who loves gorgeous singing. I am an opera nut and was introduced to this one by accident; "Au gond du temple saint" from Pearl Fishers (selection #6, disc one) was playing on the stereo in the Metropolitan Opera giftshop when I walked in at intermission one night. I thought it was so stunning I bought my first copy of the CD then and there; and have bought 2 other "back-up copies" since then, as well as having it on my iPod.
Good choice for opera lovers........2001-08-16
If you are in search of a cd containing various popular pieces from the greatest operas in the world, then search no more. This cd contains classic operatic pieces, sung by some of the most talented tenors and sopranos out there, including Placido Domingo. Madame Butterfly's Un Bel Di and Turandot's Nessun Dorma are, without a doubt, two of the most emotional and dramatic songs ever composed. Fortunately, this inexpensive two cd set includes those songs and many more. This cd is a delight to own, whether or not you've ever attended an opera.

It's really jazz........2006-11-28
Jass Accordian may seem like an oxymoron; but Art plays real jazz. The closest sound that I know is George Shearing. Although Art is mellow, he is also complex. So one hears more at each playing of his album.
I watched Art on early Chicago television. I loved his music before I "listened to jazz". And his magic has not dwindled over the decades.
A must in you collection!.......2004-06-25
In the story of this instrument there have been just four legends. Dick Contino , Maurice Larcange , Christian Di Maccio and Art van Damme.
Van Damme's style is interesting , romantic and sometimes influenced with jazz rhytms ; and the results are extraordinary.
However when Van Damme is inspired in the romantic mood , he produces golden performances , as gone with the wind and Laura , for instance.
Acquire this record , because the velvet sound generated by Van Damme is unique. The name of the album couldn't be more precise.
A winner CD!
ACCORDION ALA MODE.......2002-01-27
I've been a fan of Art VanDamme since the late 1940's.No one can
noodle the instrument like Art.For those who'd like more background on accordion find a copy of the Golden Age of Accordion. There's an extensive biography on VanDamme in that book.I have all Art's vinyl recordings. This CD is clean & well
recorded. For those that sneer at accordion, listening to this CD
might change your mind and make you a fan!
Thanks Dad!.......2001-08-22
My father has played Accordian since he was a very small child. He played in a polka band when he became old enough to play in bars. After hours he would go down town and sit in with the local jazz musicians. My father always had some vinyl of some great player on the turn table most every night while i was growing up. Monk, Diz, Bird, Miles and Art. It may seem funny sounding to you, But Art Van Damme is the king of his instrument and just as great an artist. He could play great ballads like Miles. Dizzying hot upbeat tunes like Bird or foot taping latin beats like Dizzy. I personally am greatful I had a chance to know who he was and am Very glad his work is coming out on CD.
The Career has Ended but the Music Lingers on and on.......2001-03-10
Sadly Art Van Damme has retired but technology keeps him going. This album is among his best, if only for "Ecstasy," seldom recorded by anyone today for some unexplained reason. And Art can kill all the lingering sounds of polkas and Lady of Spain sounds still punishing your ear drums from yesteryear. If a sixth star were possible, for any of his albums, I would add it.

Product Description
Guitar legend Adrian Belew will be the primary guitarist for the brand new concept CD by Man on Fire, titled Habitat. Adrian brings his signature style to this release, providing a stunning array of searing solos and unique textural soundscapes to the recordings. Adrians contributions add a whole new layer to the CD, which Man on Fire believes to be their most definitive musical statement to date. Conceptually Habitat details a variety of different lives existing within the confines of a single urban city block. Each of the tracks paints a musical portrait of one or more of the individuals living within this block, allowing for the CD as a whole to reflect many varied emotions and dynamics. In addition to the contributions from Adrian Belew, Habitat features the amazing artistry of former Kansas violinist David Ragsdale, who adds an intoxicating combination of gorgeous, melodic atmosphere and fierce technical virtuosity to the tracks on which he performs. The final mixes of Habitat were mastered by veteran mastering engineer Brad Blackwood (Evanescence).

AMAZING!.......2005-11-21
First and foremost, BUY THIS CD! This is an amazing album that mixes elements of modern music, ambience, and progressive hard rock all into one sick mix. In this musical journey you experience the lives of 10 people on 1 city block. The music is very complex, sometimes catchy, rockin, melodic.... probably more. With Adrian Belew playing guitar and solos from an ELECTRIC VIOLIN by the guy who played for Smashing Pumpkins, your in for some real treats. If your a fan of music get this CD. Think King Crimson meets RPWL meets modern alternative.

First poster missed..........2005-04-15
The first poster is mistaken. Adrian Smith's first solo band was A.S.A.P (Adrian Smith And Project) a few years before doing Psycho Motel....
Adrian was always my fav in Maiden and I love his style on these records. I highly recommend them for any Maiden fan or non-fan alike.
A PHENOMENAL PIECE OF ROCK 'N' ROLL.......2003-02-24
This is Adrian Smith's solo band's debut, and it is an amazing one. This is completely different from any Iron Maiden, the songs are more polished over with melodic hooks and radio friendly harmonies. Where the second album by this group is better, this one is much heavier, and that is why I find myself listening to this one a bit more than "Welcome To The World," their second album. Both albums are truly great and worthy of 5 stars, I only wish this band would get back together and do another one...That probably won't happen, not too many people knew of Psycho Motel and Adrian Smith has his hands full lead guitaring Iron Maiden again these days, oh well!
AVERAGE.........2001-09-05
COmpared to other ex-Maiden solo efforts, like Dickinson's "ACCIDENT OF BIRTH" and Blaze's "SILICON MESSIAH", this album by legenday Adrian SMith is nothing less than a greta dissapointment. Of course it's not bad played, it's just that the songs are not good. For you to have a clear idea, is similar to Dickinson's SKUNKWORKS...
Progressive light rock.......2001-05-10
I really didn't understand why others compared this album with Bruce Dickinson's solo carreer, since they are extremely different. This album is a light progressive rock, just like Deep Purple in the old days (Machine Head, for example). Considering that Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple's former guitar player) was the greatest influence of Adrian Smith, the fact that his solo project sounds very likely Rainbow is expectable. Now, what does this progressive hard rock have to do with the heavy metal that Bruce done on Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding?? Any of the Bruce solo albuns, except for Tattooed Millionaire, are heavier than this one. If you enjoy Deep Purple you will enjoy this album too. However, since the sound is simply nice, even though you don't like Deep Purple, its worthy for the Iron Maiden admirer.
Pretty good..........2000-07-14
Adrian Smith uses some of the great heavy tones that he and Roy Z employed in Bruce Dickinson's last solo outtings. However, the vocalist is very run of the mill. Go get it if like me you like Maiden, but know that it does not sound like Maiden. Man, if Bruce or Adrian himself did the vocals, this album would be a great one.

Rare 1995 Box Set.......2003-10-25
This is the Canadian Box Set that is so rare and hard to find. Containing 49 songs from 1969 to 1980, there are great cuts, rare B-sides, live recordings, unreleased singles and previously unreleased material. The box itself is a 12" X 12" standard with a 3-D see-through cover and also contains a lengthy booklet with history, notes, and rare photographs.
Disc 1 contains unreleased versions of, "Space Oddity (Demo)", "London Bye Ta-Ta", rare B-sides, "Wild Eye Boy From Freecloud", "Round & Round" and cuts from "The Man Who Sold The World", "Hunky Dory", "Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust", "Aladdin Sane" and "Ziggy Stardust: The Movie".
Disc 2 contains unreleased versions of, "1984/Dodo", "After Today", "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City", cuts from "Pin-Ups", "Diamond Dogs", "David Live", "Young Americans" and "Station To Station".
Disc 3 contains the German version of "Heroes" ("Helden"-worth the set alone) and cuts from "Low", "Heroes", "Live From Stage", "Lodger" and "Scary Monsters".
The cuts are all some of Bowie's best and some never made it to single status. This is a really great find for fans and collectors.

A Mussorgsky feast beyond praise.......2006-06-11
It was incredibly generous of DG to throw toegther these great performances--one of them legenday--in a bargain two-fer. The legendary performance, of course, is Richter's 1958 Pictures at an Exhibition performed in concert. The rights are owned by Philips, but I don't know if their latest remastering has been used here. The complaints about dreadful sonics are justified: the piano is far away and tinny, the Sofia audience coughs continuously--some of them are lucky to have left with their lungs intact--and there is a noisy exhaust fan in the foreground. It's a testimony to Richter's incandescent reading that it survives beyond all obstacles.
Another high point is the orchestral reading of Pictures under Giulini with the CSO. This was a famous recording in its day, because Giulini took the thrice-familiar music seriously, a bit slower than usual, adding many individual touches. Maybe his approach becomes ponderous and too serious at times, but it's one of a kind, and the solo winds in the orchestra are a delight.
Actually, I was most moved by Vishnievskaya's selection of songs, recorded in the Soviet Union with Igor Markevitch adding his superlative accompaniments--this is Mussorgsky singing of the highest order. But so is Fassbaender's Songs and Dances of Death, despite her lack of Slavic authenticity. Maazel bombs through Night on Bald Mountain with suitable thrills.
In all, this Panorama two-fer can't be faulted. It's one of the very best in the seeries, and several of the choicest things on it are otherwise out of print.
A STRONG REBUTTLE to the "bad" reviews........2006-05-19
155 minutes of music and one reviewer gives these CDs 1 star for couging here and there during 7 minutes of Richter's Pictures recital. Not continually mind you. I DON'T GET IT!
A reviewer doesn't like vocal music..so 2 stars. I DON'T GET IT! Just because one does not like "classical" vocals, doesn't mean they stink.
This is over 2 1/2 hours at single CD budget price. Geez...
Giulini gives a superbly recorded THRILLING performance of Pictures that, in my humble opinion, is second only to Reiner's. Also with the CSO 15 years earlier.
This 34+ minutes alone is worth the price of this collection.
The excerpts from Boris Gudonov are considered one of the best performances in the catalog (Karajan/VPO). 29 minutes and a good way to determine if you want to purchase the complete opera 3 CD set for over $30+ bucks.
Markevich/Vishnevskaya is considered to be the definitive version for the "6 songs".
The Kovanshchina prelude (Dawn on The Moskva River) is one the most heart rending themes in the canon. Simply gorgeous 6 minute piece of music.
I could go on and on.
Sure there are a few "gaffs" on these CDs. Maazel brings in Bald Mountain in under 10 minutes. Whew!
But hey...kudos to the orchestra for being able to play that well, that fast without stumbling over each other. Quite exhilerating acually.
And Then there is Richter's famous/"infamous" Pictures. Yes the annoying cough and a not so sonic recording. But anyone looking for just this track should already have been aware of this problem. "Classisists" have been talking about this problem for 50+ years. Obviously it can't be fixed. But still several coughs in 30+ minutes just makes it sound as live a performance as it is.
So let's recap...155 minutes of music with maybe parts of 15 minutes of minor problems for DISCOUNT bucks. Pretty good math I'd say. Equals 5 STARS where I come from.
Overall, this is an excellent CD for those who want Mussorgsky's major orchestral output in one package at a bargain price.
Top conductors, top orchestras, great performances and, except for Richter's Pictures, GREAT SONICS.
If you want a truly magnificent solo piano Pictures try Pletnev's on Virgin Classics. It will blow you away. And you get the bonus of his own piano transcription of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty which is even better.
ENJOY!
Review for Richter's "Pictures" Only.......2006-04-24
I was thrilled to find that Deutsche Grammophon has reissued Sviatoslav Richter's famous Sophia performance of "Pictures." I have owned it on tape, but have until now not had it on CD. I was surprised by previous reviews of this edition, since I thought that the explosive coughing had been toned down substantially. My tape broke years ago, so maybe my memory is off. But the re-engineering of this performace has been one of the most needed "retrofits" in the entire classical catalogue. The sound quality of this edition is certainly much better than the old Polydor record.
I also will refrain from entering the "Is it the greatest Pictures ever?"-debate. It is my favorite. One sometimes hears critics dismiss the piano--thus Mussorgsky's--version as monochromatic. But Richter presents a much more percussive version than most others, which may be why some people don't care for it. (My dad played this piece with a more Romantic reading.) It's a matter of taste: I have never cared for the Ravel version, probably because the percussive aspect doesn't translate into orchestration.
I almost never write music reviews, since I'd hate to convince people to plunk down good money on a CD that conforms to my taste but not theirs. BUT, if you have enjoyed this performace in the past . . .
I give five stars to Richter recital, which amazes me still. I agree that his deliberate "clunkers" are distracting. But having listened to this performance for almost twenty years, it is the "correct" playing of Pictures that now jars me. If you love this performance, as I clearly do, you'll be happy to have this CD. Just don't Google the Hartmann pictures which inspired Mussorgsky. It's disillusioning, but they aren't very good!
A bad whooping cough in 1958 in Sofia, Bulgaria.......2006-04-17
I was listening to the magnificient percussion and
overall sound of this double release, from 2000, #469 169-2,
when throughout the 1st CD, which opens up with the Mussorgsky
number PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION, there's an irritating
musician in the room, exhibiting signs of a bad whooping cough,
thereby totally destroying the 20 minutes or so recording!
There are many soft passages throughout the number, and
it is just incredible that DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON allowed the
bad caugh distractions and irritations (cough! cough! cough!)
to stay on the tape!
Unbelievable! It's so bad, I thought about unloading this
art work, at a second hand music store for a buck and a half,
although I surely paid more than $20 for this double CD release
a few years ago.
I don't care much for the vocal pieces, either.
Aside from that, the remainder of the release is very strong,
so ...I can't bring myself to unload it....yet, anyway.
Giant performance!.......2005-06-03
Carlo Maria Giulini has been to my mind one of the most aristocratic, intelligent, wisdom and remarkable conductors in the last Century. Born in 1914, Giulini owns that special touch of genius that has been proved in several ocassions.
There are several works in the Symphonic repertoire whose meaning depends in last instance of your personal world's approach. The list wold be extremely long but briefly I would name five classic works: The Eroica, The First of Mahler, The Ninth of Bruckner, The fourth of Nielsen and this work.
What do you demand from this work? Fireworks, nostalgic approach, musical musculature, effectism or tonal poolish?
Besides a great amount of recorded versions, there is however, a relatively small number of succesful performances from the early forties with Arturo Toscanini, Guido Cantelli and Igor Markevitch in the fifties, Dorati in the sixties and then Markevitch again and Giulini in the seventies.
Giulini gives this work a remarkable stature, enriching the score with sumptuous details and rubatos, smart accents, inflexions, color sense and above all a noblesse spirit that personally I haven't listened in any other previous version.
Go for this golden treasure recording. But do not expect great fireworks exercises. Giulini never searched the gallery' s applause. He was a honest and original master by himself: his personal landmark.
