I really enjoy this cd. It's doesn't have a lot of singing, and the songs do still sound like they were the original recordings. If you don't like songs that sound like that this isn't the cd for you. If you are an Elizabeth Cotten fan, then this is a great cd for you.

An American Treasure.......2005-12-30

What can I say? Elizabeth Cotten was one of the best guitar players of all time and almost no one knows about her.I have enormous respect for all the great guitarists from all genres of modern music and to my ears no one comes close,except maybe Mississippi John Hurt, to her fluid and gentle approach to the guitar.
And to think this was recorded in her bedroom instead of a studio gives this disc a refreshing sound,just like she was sitting on her bed and playing just for you.Great just to listen to and essential to anyone who is a fan of acoustic guitar playing at its finest.
Freight Train is not just a classic song but it sounds like it has always been here like the mountains and the sky.I love this disc and everything about it.Essential and highly recommended.

Elizabeth does a wonderful job here. Don't expect a lot from the recording itself but the songs are great American History. Great background music.

When I first heard this CD I was astounded not just by the
technical ability of Libba Cotten, but also by the sheer
spiritual feeling she gives to the songs. She also plays really
gently, never overemphasising anything.

Move Over John Hurt.......2002-02-26

These phenomenal songs were recorded by Mike Seeger in Elizabeth Cotten's bedroom. Elizabeth Cotten had stopped playing guitar for over twenty years when the Seeger family "discovered" her (she was working as their maid!)

Cotten's completely "by ear" playing is among the most subtle and harmonically nuanced in "roots folk music". Strangely, she does not get anywhere near the attention of Mississipi John Hurt, though she is a far better and more interesting guitar player (this is not to knock John Hurt, who is also great.)

Listen up all you Wilco fans, this is a must buy cd! I was extremely impressed with this album. Bluegrass Wilco is a match that couldnt be more right. Freight Train Heart became a huge hit for Jimmy Barnes, and with good reason. It followed on directly from the blue-collar rock of Bodyswerve and For the Working Class Man, yet managed to create its own identity. While it may have lacked complete originality ('Driving Wheels' is a simple update of 'Working Class Man'), Barnes managed to make this set of songs an instant classic, thanks to the strength of singles like 'Waitin' for the Heartache'. Slightly more polished than For the Working Class Man (but never losing sight of its pub-rock origins), Freight Train Heart nevertheless runs neck and neck with that album for the title of Barnes' best release. 1987 release.

If you are wanting an introduction to Australian rock then you should look no further than this release. The CD opens with the classic Driving Wheels (which was written by Schon and Cain from Journey fame) and also contains the classic Too much aint enough and Waitin for the heartache. The closing track, Walk on should make it as part of a movie score - truely classic. If you have heard of Cold Chisel - they were and are still regarded as one of Australias premier bands, and liked what they did then this should make a part of your CD collection

Pioneers of the Duet.......2006-02-05

The Delmore brothers are one of those names that you no longer hear. And that's a real shame. Not only were they the frist true "power" duet, but introduced the world to the finest musicians ever to grace the music world, including none other than Merle Travis and Wayne Raney. The 20 songs contained here are not your usual traditional country....in fact, at the time of their recordings, the Delmore Bros could probably be better characterized as Rock and Roll (had it been "invented" at the time!) or Bop. This album is well worth your money, and definately, worth a listen.

Guitar booging Delmores.......2004-01-17

This is like a Jimmie Rogers album or a Robert Johnson Album, or Decca Basie, it is soooooooooo good that when you play it, it stays on the player for days, sometimes weeks. This is the last part of the Delmore Brother's career. It contains stuff that is typical of their old stuff, but suffused with the new approach to country music that came after World War II. Probably Arthur Guitar Boogie Smith (as opposed to Fiddlin' Arthur Smith) ushered it in with his Guitar Boogie. However, the Delmore Brothers here joined by Wayne Rayney, and Jethro Burns (the great electric mandolinist of Homer and Jethro) who ad some great electric guitar playing on a lot of the cuts, get the thing going with great guitar boogie music.
there is something sweet and real and at the same time modern--despite the cynicsm of the liner notes that come with the CD that don't understand it--and really working class about it. I keep thinking of the used car blues, and the Sand Mountain Blues. "I am just a poor boy and work's my middle name."
Like I say, discount the cynicism of the liner notes. Steamboat Bill the last song is a great rhythm tune.
It's good to remember that the guitar boogie music along with folks who came this way via a Western Swing direction like Moon Mullican were part of what inspired rockabilly along with rhythm and blues and rock and roll.

Rock and Roll begins as a phase of R & B starting around 1950-1953 before any Sun records were made of rockabilly, although in the late 40s there had been a R & B craze of songs on the topic and using the words "Rock and Roll." As for Sun, one of the first Rock and Roll records, Ike Turner/Jackie Brenson's historic "Rocket 88," (in 1952 or 53 I believe) was recorded by Sun. Sun began primarily as a blues and R & B operation that sold or leased recordings to national distributors like Chess and King. The young, barely out of high school Ike Turner, functioned like an A & R man for sun bringing some of the greatest blues stars like Howling Wolf into the studios for the first time and cuting some fine records himself.

Great Historical Meaning!.......2003-09-13

I played this record to a few friends of mine who are really into roots rock 'n' roll and rockabilly and they couldn't believe it that they never heard about the Delmore Brothers and Wayne Raney! This is the music that paved the way for Sun Records and all the new rockabilly styles in the 1950's. There is so much power and energy in this music! It is so good to have this compilation available, it should be in every collection of music lovers, no matter if you are into Country, Blues or Rockabilly/Rock 'N' Roll!

It Doesn't Get Better Than This !.......2003-01-08

Ace Records should be given a big pat on the back for releasing these Delmore Brothers classics cut for King Records between 1946 - 1952 . If you like bluesy , hillbilly , country boogie in its rawest form , this cd is a must . Fantastic vocal harmonies , great blues harp , great guitar picking and twenty tracks that are the equal to anything that you will find in American Roots music . These recordings are as earthy as the soil of the Elkmont farm that the brothers grew up on , and so influential in that they played a major part in laying down the blueprint for the Rock&Roll that was to change the 20th Century for ever . I can't think of higher praise than that !

Every Track Is a Delight.......2001-01-22

Several years ago The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website included a list entitled 500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll. The Delmore Brothers' "Hillbilly Boogie" made that list. After picking up this CD it's easy to see why. Though they were a country act, they incorporated blues, boogie and rockabilly elements into their sound. Rabon and Alton Delmore recorded for King from 1946 until 1952, when Rabon died of lung cancer. [Alton died in 1964.] The twenty tracks included here (half of which are originals) provide a terrific overview of two musicians who--as the liner notes point out--"were too modern for the determined traditionalism of bluegrass, (but) too oldtime for the hip-swivelling of rock 'n' roll." Every track is a delight. This is important listening. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Playing Time - 55:04 -- Hailing from Charlottesville, Va., Old School Freight Train is a quintet that chooses bluegrass instruments for their largely original material that incorporates blues, jazz, Latin, swing and rock grooves. Why, they even take on a Celtic motif with an original "Mr. Parshif's Jig" that eventually evolves into the lightning speed of a reel. Their only covers on this project are Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927," both tastefully rendered in fine new acoustic fashion. David Grisman, who guests with his mandolin on "Euridice," offers that the band caught his attention, and they now have a place on the Acoustic Disc label. Joe Craven plays percussion on two tracks.

OSFT's contemporary acoustic music is arranged and built around evocative lyrics which should've been included in the CD jacket. Guitarist Jesse Harper sings with exhilarating electricity, more characteristic of a jazz vocalist. The dynamics in the band's music call for rhythmic and tempo variations that impart power and intensity. Instrumental breaks are shared among all the band members, and their song's appealing melodies are lyrical and fluid.

Besides Harper, Old School Freight Train includes Pete Frostic (mandolin), Ben Krakauer (banjo), Nate Leath (fiddle), and Darrell Muller (bass). The title track and some of the other offerings ("Drama Queen" or "Broken Pieces") have commercial leanings which clearly open up the door for significant airplay. The closer, "Dance" is explosive and distinctive. The band's eclectic nature covers a great deal of ground from bluegrass ("Henry Brown" and "Lookee Here") to R&B ("Superstition") to adventures south of the border ("Tango Chutney" and "Euridice"). Pete Frostic's "Trick Dog" is also a zealous stringed exploration featuring mandocello.

The band has been together since 2000 and won awards at Telluride and Rockygrass. Their first self-titled album came out in 2002. With sound and energy that get an audience to sit up and take notice, OSFT is steaming up the hill of success. Don't let "Run" fool you into thinking that they are suffering from an identity crisis. These boys clearly have the musical acumen to journey into whatever territory their adventurous tastes take them. Their music exudes originality, tact and innovation. Acoustic Delight.......2005-06-06

I had the unexpected delight last night of seeing this extremely talented quintet at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Their fresh sound is accurately captured on this CD.

Old School Freight Train has found a new recipe for making some very tasty music: Two cups of excellent song writing, 5 scoops of instrumental virtuosity (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass), steamed together with the rhythmic sensibilities of a jazz band, served up with pop-right tightness.

More creative than new-grass, more focused than a jam band, these guys sound like Nickel Creek meet the (American Beauty/Workingman's Dead era) Grateful Dead. Well crafted acoustic music with a focus on the song and the feeling makes this CD something special.

A must have for any music fan.......2005-05-26

I recently attended a concert in Boston in which Old School Freight Train was one of the featured bands. They played some really different music with a great sound. During intermission I purchased the cd "Run" and briefly talked to mandolin player Pete Frostic.I am very glad I did.It is the freshest sound I have heard in a long time. Part bluegrass, part latin, part rock, part blues, even a hint of funk (cover version of the Stevie Wonder song "Superstition" which by the way is really cool). From the very first track "Run" you realise that these kids are really something special. Lead singer and guitarist (also plays some realy kicking percussion) Jesse Harper has an excellent voice which really adds to the bands unique sound. The album is produced by legendary mandolin player David Grisman who does an excellent job producing this album, especially the song "Broken Pieces" an anti war song with some excellent lyrics such as "and when we you learn it's children who get burned when bombs fall in foreign lands" and a really great melody and crisp sound. Another high point is the latin sounding instrumental "Tango Chutney" this song can best be described in 3 letters WOW!I very highly recommend this cd to everyone, especially those who like bluegrass and rock bands like the Grateful Dead. (...)I look forward to hearing more from these guys in the future and I'msure you will too after hearing this cd.

OSFT is a tremendously talented group of young people. Their style has a very nice Grissman/Furtado/Fleck quality. Very clean, well recorded and mixed, with great original tunes. If you like bluegrass style or acoustic music type sounds, this CD is a must have. Really, really good.

These guys are amazing musicians with a mature sense of taste and emotion far beyond their years. Their arrangements are intricate and tight and show off their technical dexterity as well as their keen sense of musicality. You will definitely want to keep your eyes on them; they will go far!

New Breed.......2003-03-08

Old School Freight Train's music doesn't fit well into of the usual pigeonholes. Not really bluegrass, not really newgrass, not really jazz, not a jam band. It's original and just is what it is. There seem to be several acoustic bands around these days doing their own thing, and Old School Freight Train is one of the very best.

music is sloppy...not tight at all. latin songs are generic and without any feeling. lyrics are silly and band sounds like your mediocre wannabe newgrass. do yourself a favor and pick up something worthwhile like yonder mountain and leave these kids on the shelf

Not Just Bluegrass!.......2003-01-04

This cd has been in my discman for three weeks now. I love the ecclectic mix of music presented here. This acoustic outfit does Latin, jazz, bluegrass and more. The best part is that all eleven songs on the album are original compositions.

Modern recordings of train songs.......2003-04-19

Some of the other volumes in this series contain very old recordings dating back to the first half of the twentieth century, but this set is restricted to tracks laid down in the last quarter of that century. Being recorded so long after the passing of the age of the train as a primary means of travel, they show the continuing fascination that some people have with trains.

Like the first two volumes in this series, Steel rails and Mystery train, this collection focuses on country and bluegrass music. Marty Stuart learned a lot through time spent working with Johnny Cash, a noted singer of train songs, so it is entirely appropriate that he opens this set with a stunning version of Blue train.

Among the other highlights, I particularly enjoy It won't be long (Kathy Chiavola) Kansas City southern (Pure prairie league), Trains don't run from Nashville (Kate Campbell), Boxcars (Joe Ely) and My baby thinks she's a train (Asleep at the wheel).

This is yet another excellent collection of train songs from Rounder.

A Terrific Variety..........2001-10-02

A little bit of everything on this CD, from blues and a few instrumentals to humor. Many of these songs have a nice 'sing along' quality that makes this CD a take-along for those looong family drives. The quality of the recordings are decent, and the original songs are performed by the original artists. All in all, vol. 4 of this set is my personal favorite for its diversity and the fact that two of the songs just make me laugh ('I Like Trains' and 'My Baby Thinks She's a Train').

A tasty collection to tease the palate.......2000-12-13

I first heard a couple of these songs on a little local radio station, WWHP 98.3FM. When I realized they were on one CD, I bought it! This is my favorite driving CD. Slip it in the player, hit the highway and cruise. Let the rhythm of the trains rock you. Some great artists on here. Joe Ely's soulful "Boxcars" about a poor farmer's plight is great. Eaglesmith's "I Like Trains" will cause me to get a ticket some day. NRBQ's "Next Stop Battleboro" is a nice contrast - almost elegant. Consider this one a sampler because it will tempt you to get other CD's from these Rounder artists.

This North Carolina pre-grass quartet takes old-time, string- band, and fiddle tunes and injects them with a propulsive energy and buoyant spirit. To a certain extent, that's what Bill Monroe did more than 50 years earlier, but unlike Big Mon, the Hoppers stick to the old-time repertoire exclusively, digging up fine 1920s and 1930s gems; they also retain old-time's rougher edges, stopping short of bluegrass's precision. Certainly, they have the chops to merit liner notes from the venerable Charles Wolfe, especially David Bass on fiddle, who handles his romping contest-fiddling splashes with aplomb. Banjoist Frank Lee and guitarist Cary Fridley offer standout harmonizing, as on the Carter Family's "Anchored in Love," "Warfare," and "We Shall All Be Reunited;" Fridley's striking a cappella dirge "A Roving on a Winter's Night" marks another highlight. Despite their talent, taste in material, and exuberance, however, they seem to lack that tiny little distinguishing characteristic that would carry them to the next level. Still, the sundae is quite tasty, even if the cherry's missing. --Marc Greilsamer

This album gives old standards fire and passion. If you are fond of mountain music and the American folk tradition, this might very well be a great pick to get you up and dancing. In a number of songs on this album, the sound-focus is primarily on the fiddle playing. More of an instrumental give-and-take might have added a little extra color in places. Yet the vocal harmonizing is really something special, and the ballads add a special beauty. I got this album after traveling through the great state of New Hampshire and hearing a song called "We Shall All Be Reunited." If you get a copy of this album for this song and this song only, you will be richly rewarded. To hear such a sweet voice singing these nostalgic and hopeful words was a true honor for me. The Freights are even tighter on this, their second CD........1999-09-28

This group is magic as a unit. They play with awareness and respect for the old-time styles, but above all, with enthusiasm and focus. The solo ballads are also beautifully sung.

old music, new life.......1998-10-02

It's no simple trick to carry old-time Southern music into the late 20th Century, especially when those grand 1920s recordings from which the revivalist bands draw their repertoires are readily available in reissues from Yazoo, Revenant, Smithsonian/Folkways, and other labels. But the Freight Hoppers pull it off more successfully than any outfit we've heard in a while. In fact, they're surely the most accomplished neo-old-time outfit since the legendary Highwoods Stringband in the 1970s. The songs here are largely standards -- "Nobody's Business" in particular should have been left in mothballs -- but on the whole the Freight Hoppers manage to make even the worn-out sound fresh, through distinctive arrangements, unusual melodies, and pleasing harmonies. They cut right to the heart, at once dark and hopeful, of the venerable hymn "We Shall All Be Reunited," and the warhorse "Shortenin' Bread" comes roaring back to life in their accomplished hands. All in all, this engaging and entertaining exercise gives us cause for hope that even better is to come.
