Kenny Burrell's music is a wonderful blend of elegance and conviction, musical inventiveness and thoughtful restraint. On this 1967 session, the guitarist is joined by regular associates--tenorist Stanley Turrentine, conga drummer Ray Barretto, bassist Major Holley, and drummer Bill English--and together they concentrate on the subtlest and deepest hues of the blues, combining strong rhythmic grooves with a feeling of late-night reflection. There's never a misstep or a superfluous note, from the funky Latin hit "Chitlins Con Carne" to Burrell's deeply felt solo "Soul Lament" and the concentrated swing of "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good to You." The result is a masterpiece, and the 24-bit remastering by the original engineer, Rudy Van Gelder, adds to the spaciousness and intimacy that have always been hallmarks of the session. --Stuart BroomerAlbum Description
Alfred Lion considered this his favorite production and well he should have. Without piano, Burrell, Stanley Turrentine and company get a clean open sound and a deep groove on such now classic compositions as the title tune and "Chitlins Con Carne", which has become a blues band staple. This RVG Series compact disc also includes extra photographs and 2 bonus tracks.

Blindingly Brilliant All-Time Classic!!!!!.......2006-08-04
The opener, "Chitlins Con Carne", is one of Kenny's best-known sizzlers. "Soul Lament" is both gently and deeply touching. The title song, "Midnight Blue" has a care-free and easy feel. "Saturday Night Blues" features Stanley Turrentine at his best. "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To You" highlights Kenny Burrell at his inspired and awesome finest. There is also a bonus cut, "K Twist" that was not included in the original album.
Kenny Burrell touches music afficienados from all generations. His guitar portrays a subtle exuberance that most musicians envy. Inspired, artistic, and soulful, Kenny Burrell is timeless! Kenny's flawless sound is ageless and color-blind.....his music is world class.
Evocative.......2006-02-01
Classic Blues.......2005-12-11
Of particular note, "Soul Lament", with Burrell playing
solo guitar. "Midnight Blue", a nice, upbeat number.
Burrell has a very nice chord solo on
"Bee Baby, Ain't I Good To You".
Both Burrell and Turrentine really cook on the
up tempo numbers "Saturday Night Blues" and "Kenny's Sound".

Let's Make This Precious.......2007-04-16
What is the most identifiable element of Dexy's Midnight Runners' sound? Is it the Stax-like horns that bolster these cuts with their taut R&B charts? Is it the Irish gypsy fiddle of Steve Brennan and Helen O'Hara? How about Billy Adams' sprightly banjo? Their bedraggled, dungareed street image is certainly distinctive as hell. Or it could very possibly be bandleader and songwriter Kevin Rowland's off-kilter vocals that sound like the common ground between Ric Ocasek, Joe Strummer, and Van Morrison (wherever that may be).
Speaking of Van Morrison, Dexy's fusion of rock, soul, and Irish folk certainly owes much to the Man's work - they cover his "Jackie Wilson Said" on TOO-RYE-AY as a matter of fact. But especially toward the end of the album as the songs start to get longer and blend into one another, that same indefinable, searching quality emerges in Rowland's songwriting as he emulates Van's incantory talk-singing. This is especially evident in the album's shortest ("I'll Show You") and longest ("Until I Believe in My Soul") songs, the latter of which is probably the best song on the album this side of "Come On Eileen". Combined with the prominent fiddle alongside the R&B elements TOO-RYE-AY actually reminds me of Morrison's INTO THE MUSIC, and that's compliment, since INTO THE MUSIC happens to be one of my favourite albums ever. But that's not to say that Dexy's Midnight Runners are derivative. They have a sound all their own, and make no mistake - you'd never mistake a song like "The Celtic Soul Brothers" or "Plan B" for anything but Dexy's.
Evidently, Dexy's Midnight Runners only have two other albums: SEARCHING FOR THE YOUNG SOUL REBELS and DON'T STAND ME DOWN. And if they're anywhere near as good as TOO-RYE-AY (and everything I've heard, in terms of reviews and listening both, has been indicative of the affirmative) I'll be going after them in the not-too-distant future.
Great Record - but stop arguing about ska!.......2007-02-08
In the U.S., Dexy's Midnight Runners were a one hit wonder of the first order, but in the UK, they charted hit after hit after hit in the early 80's. Pick up this album, or better yet, pick up "Let's Make This Precious," and you'll see why. You won't regret it.
But please, let's not get into an argument about who "invented" ska here. To claim that either DMR or the Clash invented ska is absurd. Ska - like reggae, its cousin, a Caribbean/American form of popular music characterized by its hybridization of U.S. American R&B with an Afrocentric rhythmic sensibility - was huuuuge among British youth in the 60's and 70's, and found a niche audience in the burgeoning punk scene in London. Bands like the Clash (and hundreds of others) anglicized ska/reggae, creating from it their own "rebel music," but it was also swiftly aestheticized and adopted/assimilated by any number of punk subcultures, including, ironically, an often-sinister brand of racist skinhead. But whatever.
not your typical 80's techno-pop drivel!.......2007-01-31
One Good Song Does Not an Album Make.......2006-06-13
How another reviewer could state this band deserved as much billing as the Beatles is beyond me. No accounting for poor taste.
That reviewer also makes the statement: "Do I detect Commodore-mania with 'Jackie Wilson Said'". Not sure what the reviewer meant by that statement.
As good as it gets..........2006-02-08
I didn't particularly like "Come on Eileen" when it was big, but someone (who???) gave me this tape to listen to one night in college and that was it. I could be found on many a night with it on my headphones at RISD's architecture studio. I still have the same cassette and I still love it to death. Sorry to whoever lent it to me... man so I owe you one! If you haven't heard this, do yourself a favor and give a shot, you will not be sorry!

Brilliant Musicianship, Though-Provoking Lyrics -- A Must-Own CD!.......2007-01-17
I saw the Oils around the time of this release. I'll never forget the gig. Peter Garrett loomed larged on the stage. His jerky movements and impassioned vocal delivery are branded into my brain.
At the time of the release of Blue Sky Mining, the Oils were on nearly every radio station in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I remember one DJ who commented, "This is the best song on the radio" just before he spun the disc. For a DJ to actually voice an opinion takes guts. And to make such an absolute statement takes more still.
But the DJ's comments are entirely justified. "Blue Sky Mining" is a great song -- one that takes it place among many great songs on this album. Catchy, clever, powerful, unique -- Midnight Oil's Blue Sky Mining album is a milestone release, one of my favorites in my 2,500+ CD collection.
I highly recommend Blue Sky Mining.

Simply the Best.......2005-06-21
The album starts off very strongly - the first five tracks (including Blue Sky Mining, Stars of Warburton, and Bedlam Bridge) are pure class. The songs are very easy to listen to.
If I had to think about a perfect album, this would probably be the closest that I could get to in finding such a beast. The songs on this album have a melodical, inspiring feel to them. I personally like Mountains of Burma, this song lifts you up and lets your head spin in the heavens.
It is, in my opinion, Midnight Oil's best ever album. Better than Diesel and Dust. But it now.
Astonishing music with thought provoking lyrics .......2005-06-07
On a side note, they were awesome to see live. They all had more energy then any group I have ever seen live.
Midnight Oil - A Continuing Success .......2004-09-21
Blue Sky Mining, the first track is easily one of Midnight Oil's best of the best. It was based on a event that happened in Australia some time ago, and by remembering the event in a song format, I suppose Peter and his group is hoping that listeners won't forget lightly. Other songs to listen to that I found interesting and nice on this album release were Forgotten Years and King of the Mountain.
ALl in all, Blue Sky Mining, the CD is a strong follow up on this band's previous work. Good going Midnight Oil!

Nat "King" Cole endured more than his share of scorn and rebuke from all manner of fans and critics. He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. The session brings several Swing Era stars on board: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. The horns and violin fronted a semistandard jazz setup of guitar, drums, and percussion, along with Cole's own considerable chops on piano. As an improviser, Cole heavily influenced a generation of ivory ticklers, including Oscar Peterson and others, and here he shows himself a stellar pianist. His runs bespeak Cole's utter perfection on the keyboard. This is a crucial document. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

that's the feel of jimmy smith's opening number. mr. smith is a master of the blues, and when he entered the studio with stanley turrentine and kenny burrell in tow, a super session was put in place. mr. smith revolutionized the hammond b-3 making it a staple of hard bop jazz, but he never forgot the roots of the instrument--blues shacks and also church halls. this album covers the spectrum, revealing the funk at the heart of jazz, but also exploring the nuances of bop--"a subtle one"--
getting this album is getting one of the true masterpieces of the blue note catalog.

The biggest irony of Julie London's singing career was the fact that she never could give herself enough credit. She never felt her voice was special, and constantly downplayed her abilities. In the realm of the great jazz ladies, there was nobody who could touch her, nor will there ever be. Julie London was a complete original, and this reissue of 'Around Midnight' will be welcomed with open arms by her legion of fans.

The best.......2007-01-09
And the songs she chooses are just wonderful.
Simply Elegant.......2002-04-16
If elegance is restraint of ornament allied with purity of form and richness of substance, then Mabel Mercer is simply elegant.
Among this rich substance there are some evergreens like "I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore," '"Loverly," "Young and Foolish," and, perhaps, "Blame It On My Youth". But most of these songs were obscure even when the albums were recorded in 1956 and 1958, and the passing of more than 40 years has not shed any more light on them. Some are minor works of major composers and lyricists: Romberg, Hammerstein, Kern, Rodgers, Hart, Lerner, Lowe, Coward, the Gershwins, Arlen, Mercer, Bernstein, Comden and Green. Others are works of a group of less known talent: Howard, Wilder, Levant, Coleman, and Grant. But all tell simple stories or present poignant images, and after a night at the theater Mercer's 11:30 PM audience was ready for gentle songs of quiet reflection made, perhaps, even more evocative by their very unfamiliarity.
Almost all of the songs are about love at some stage: anticipation ("Wait Til You See Her"), yearning ("Lonely Little Boy"), despair ("Blue Moon," "If Love Were All'), fulfillment ("Some Other Time"), loss ("He Was Too Good To Me," "Guess I'll Go Back Home"), lost youth ("Isn't It a Pity," "Young and Foolish"), and gained wisdom ("Once Around the Clock," "Sail Away").
Most of the lyrics are of the Seine/champagne variety, although of course there is Noel Coward with this rhyming full-house ("though I never really grumble life's a jumble indeed, and in my efforts to succeed I've had to formulate a creed"), and Ira Gershwin shows his usual virtuosity in "Isn't it a Pity":
Think of all the lonely nights we've wasted: I with the neighbors, you at silly labors,
What joys untasted: I reading Heine, you somewhere in China
. . .
Think of all the lonely years we've wasted: fishing for salmon, loosing at backgammon,
What joys untasted: my nights were sour spent with Schopenhauer
Mercer adds only the most subtle trace of distaste to the word "Schopenhauer." In "Guess I'll go Back Home" she adds just the slightest emphasis to the first "he": "I'll walk by the house where he used to live, I hope he married well." It's the verbal equivalent of a slightly raised eyebrow or an up-turned palm.
On "Midnight at Mabel Mercer's" the accompaniment is provided by two pianos. The pianos are particularly well arranged on "Sonnet," " Wait Til you See Her," and especially "Young and Foolish." On "Once in a Blue Moon" strings are added. Even at this point in her career, Mercer had the ability to overpower the accompaniment. She chose not to, and the strings are distracting.
Two discs of Mercer magic.......2001-07-20
At last!.......2001-04-05
Mabel Mercer is, I know, an acquired taste, but, for those in the process of acquiring the taste, this selection is a splendid introduction.
