There's very little doubt that the Gipsy Kings are good at what they do--they've become the brand name in Sevillana, the pop-oriented flamenco style. Since 1989, when the single "Bamboleo" and their Gipsy Kings album broke through and went gold in the United States, they've found a willing audience in America for their style, which, while flashy, doesn't demand a great deal of the listener, unlike more hardcore versions of flamenco. This double set collects 37 of their biggest tracks, including a version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," into one package guaranteed to satisfy fans of their precise, jubilant playing. And there's no denying they have the power to move people with their singing and fretwork, making this a must for those who want to experience all the familiar material in one sitting. Like the band themselves, the record is an unqualified success as a greatest hits package. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
This is my second copy!.......2007-01-10
This double CD by the Gipsy Kings is one of my all-time favorites! I now have 2 copies of this CD and I introduce the Gipsy Kings to as many people as I possibly can. Everytime "Volare" plays, I feel like dancing! Just really great, infectious, "feel-good" music! You do not have to understand Spanish to enjoy!
I'm dancing as I write this!!!.......2006-07-25
While I am not a music connoisseur, I can tell you that my whole family LOVES this album. From my 34 yr. old husband right down to our 1 yr. old son and all others in between. You will not be disappointed! This is our favorite album of the summer and we try hard to be flamenco dancers while singing along and cleaning the house-it's quite a show, I assure you...
Rumba Flamenca I love!.......2006-04-04
I must say that the Gypsy Kings are simply musical geniuses. Every song of theirs is a "Hit" in itself. The history of how they came together is also very fascinating. I grew up listening to these guys thanks to my dad. The first time I heard the Gypsy Kings was in 1991 (this is when I didn't even know who they were!). When sitting in the car, he would pop his cassette in the tape player and all of a sudden, this music would put me in a trance. I finally found out who they were in 96' and I was glad that I did. Bem, Bem Maria; Tu Quieres Volver, and El Verano are my all time favorites. I could listen to these 3 songs over and over and never get tired of it. It's not only the strong rhythm that they bring in their music, but its also the hard melody they play out in all of their studio recordings. For anyone who is reading this and is not familiar with the Gypsy Kings, I suggest you buy an album from them. I recommend "Volare! - The Very Best Of The Gipsy..." Since it has all their greatest hits. Once you do, you will fall in love with the sounds of Rumba Flamenca!
Great music!.......2006-03-13
I had been meaning to buy music by the Gypsy Kings for some time - having always heard mention of them. I am really glad I finally did! The collection is a great introduction to their wonderful music. It is fun and energetic - beautiful songs in spanish!
Buy it already.......2005-12-15
Whether you have all the previous albums, seen them in concert, or are just discovering this band you will love this album.
It is a must have for anyone with a little spice in their collection.
This 2 disc album brings to life the history of this group, it fills the room you play it in with love and energy, and it fills you with a taste of their inspirations.
Enjoy!

The Barcelona-based nuevo-roots outfit is back with a third entertaining, anarchistic yet wildly danceable amalgam. The rousing guitar of Ramón Giménez and sinuous, Moorish-tinged vocals of Marina "la Canillas" Abad are wreathed in handclaps and percussion, plus scathing brass charts, remarkably creative scratching, beats and other electronic embellishments. There are also flurries of quotes from a far-flung array of traditions outside their own, such as reggae and rap, but the band's antic inclusiveness never derails their individuality or adulterates the heritages of their collaborators. After all, their hometown is one of Europe's great musical hotbeds, in which flamenco, rumba Catalana and other local styles are often fused with whatever is at hand or just arrived. Guest stars this time out include Faada Freddy from the Senegalese hip-hop collective Daara J, Indian fusioneers Prithpal Rajput and Nitin Sawhney, and Cuban pianist Roberto Carcàsses. From nearer home, Flamenco guitar legend Pepe Habichuela and Spanish singing star Martirio sit in, along with tres and guitar master Raúl Rodrígues of Son de la Frontera, another band with fervent global leanings, this time toward Cuba. The lush packaging includes a CD-ROM containing videos, lyric translations, works by fourteen illustrators and other extras. --Christina Roden

Brilliant CD!!.......2007-07-12
Brilliant CD!! Fantastic vocals, musicianship, songs and production mixing Flamenco (especially rhumba and bulerias) with influences of salsa, India, the Middle East, jazz, Drum 'n' Bass, reggae, hip-hop and rap (including beat-box)... all while retaining it's Flamenco core! At times, rhythmically complex, the CD is still funky as hell and will appeal to most listeners who enjoy the styles mentioned above.
Off to see the wizard.......2007-06-27
Ojos de Brujo (Eyes of the Wizard) is one of the most creative bands in Spain at the moment. They blend stains of pure flamenco (guitarist Ramón Gimenez comes from a line of flamenco guitarists) with hip-hop, jazz, African, Indian, whatever... to make their own unique withches brew. The new album may not be as genre-bending as their second disc "Bari", which I discovered on a trip to Spain a few years back, but after virtually inventing a new style that would be difficult to do. Vocalist Marina Abad is a commanding presence. Check the band out live if you have a chance; they just rocked LA's California Plaza for a free Grand Performance concert. This disc has ample highlights, in particular "Todo Tiende," "Runalí," "Feedback" and "Respira." A must-have disc for fans of Spanish and Latin music.

Bought this as something to listen to before moving to Spain for a few months. Amazing!
Ojos de brujo.......2007-06-08
An amazing CD for those that like flamanco/hip hop/spanish music from Spain. I lived there for 2 years and fell in love with the rich culture within music. Enjoy the great tunes, I know I am rocking out in my car solo.
Muy bueno.......2007-05-15
This is another good CD from OdB, but not quite as great as Bari. However, this one comes with a second disc with videos, lyrics in several languages, and a little mini-movie, which I loved. I definitely recommend this, but make sure you have Bari as well.

Some may complain that Ojos De Brujo is simply the latest group to pillage flamenco music, but they'd be missing the point. This Barcelona band grew up with the flamenco tradition while also devouring a steady diet of hip-hop, punk, funk, gypsy and Middle Eastern music, so the inclusion of rapping, turntables and funk grooves is a logical one for these upstarts. Marina "La Canillas" Abad doesn't have the range that a conservatory-trained singer might have, but she makes up for it with her vivid, socially conscious lyrics and staccato delivery, which can skitter into rapid-fire rapping that resonates surprisingly well with flamenco's chattering rhythms. Indeed, the group is unafraid to mix anything: "Naita" starts out as a traditional song before breaking into a techno finale. More graceful is the fusion on "Memorias Perdías," which meshes flamenco, gypsy and swing jazz. One of the most hotly anticipated releases of the spring, Bari has a punky spirit that will make it a pick on many year-end lists. --Tad Hendrickson

I almost wore this CD out!.......2007-05-15
If you love upbeat flamenco complete with vocals and lots of stomping and clapping, get this CD right now. It's so hard to find anything like this in the States - it makes me want to quit my life and move to Sevilla today!
Flamenco and hip hop fusion that works.......2006-02-27
Ojos de Brujo, "Eye of the Wizard", is a musician collective from Catalan Spain. Their music base is Flamenco but they bravely mix hip-hop, rap, and jazz in a fused frenzy of originality. Unlike most music fusions, Ojos de Brujo is able to remain true to its roots and still produce a unique sound. Their Bari Album of 2002 is their second release and the first time I heard it I was amazed at how they were able to join the deeply emotional lyrics of Flamenco with the more urban and street sound of hip-hop. Their lead singer, Marina Abad, can inspire deep emotions with her traditional Flamenco renditions but she inspires amazement when she breaks into a rap in the middle of the song Zambra. I hate to admit that I have been very biased when it comes to hearing rap from European bands, and usually found their attempts innocent at best, compared to the more real sound we hear in the USA. But Ojos de Brujo pulls it off because they are rapping about their emotions and world, and are able to incorporate rap lyrics into the pulse and rhythm of Flamenco, a music genre that is very much in their blood as much as culture. Do not get me wrong, 75% of the music is Flamenco on this album, but just when you think it is just the same traditional beat, they mix it up and hit you with a completely new sound. Ojos de Brujo is one of those jewels of originality and inspiration that you find by word of mouth, or by mistake, but when you hear them you know you are listening to something special. Ojos de Brujo's Bari album is a fruit of that genius and like all genius; it is fleeting and only temporary.
Rare energy.......2005-12-28
This isn't flamenco fused with anything, this is a brand new recipe and it comes off fantastic. Energetic, with a strong flamenco beat cooked in with a variety of styles to produce an amazing collection of really excellent songs. If you like any of the new style flamenco with a beat, this is a must. Of the 30 second sample cuts provided by Amazon, listen to #2 Tiempo De Solea, and #5 Quien Engana No Gana, that will give you an excellent idea of how strong this album is.
excellent music from Spain.......2005-11-28
I heard this for the first time in Mexico City, and I just absolutely loved it from the outset. Especially thrilling is track 5 "quien engana no gana." An incredibly successful blend of traditional and modern. Also check out Radio Tarifa.
Bari.......2005-10-11
A very interesting album, the familiar voice of the past albums with a different edge.

Even if you're not well-versed in Portuguese fado music, it's easy to be swayed by its rich, mournful sense of emotion. Mariza, one of the genre's premiere contemporary vocalists, see fado as an international language. She makes a convincing case on Concerto em Lisboa, a live recording captured duirng her acclaimed performance at the Tower of Belem. It's an alternately elegant and electric showcase, highlighted by Mariza's gorgeous, piercing voice. She's backed by a full orchestra, whose timing and tightness only add to the experience. From the opening strains of "Loucura" through the closing "Ó Gente Da Minha Terra," Mariza is alternately somber and festive, creating a perfect synergy of singer and musicians. The disc's shattering standout track, "Menino Do Bairro Negro," is likely as gorgeous as anything you've heard in any language. --Joey Guerra
Album Description
Mariza's brand new live CD recorded in front of 20,000+ people at the magnificent and picturesque gardens of Torre De Belem in her home town of Lisbon, Portugal. Recorded in 2005, with an orchestra (Sinfonetta de Lisbon) led by Jacques Morelenbaum, the beautiful fado singer transports the listener to a timeless evening in Lisbon.
The special bonus DVD is a documentary called Mariza And The Story Of Fado, which examines the art of fado, its history and development through interviews with and performances by Mariza and other fadistas, musicians and experts. Filmed on location in Lisbon, the program contains archival footage of famous past singers, including the late acclaimed Amalia Rodrigues
Customer Reviews:
What a concert!.......2007-06-29
I was in Belem for see this singer, I think is her greatest concert of all time, if you love this singer, after you will listen this concert you will love more Mariza.
awesome Mariza.......2007-04-11
If you like Mariza, if you like the Fado, you will love this combination. The CD is rich and pure, the DVD is wonderful, like being there. This may be the best yet Mariza , even with the applause....
Spendid.......2007-04-10
The cd of the concert was excellent, but the dvd documents and illuminates the history of the beautiful fado music of Portugal in such a meaningful way. Truly a masterpiece.
Lovely Portuguese fados - nice CD + DVD set.......2007-04-07
The concert CD is lovely, with Mariza soaring over a band led by Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum (known for his recent live work with Caetano Veloso...) They work through a variety of fado styles, from the weepiest love songs to giddy folk dances, each style performed with good humor and power.
The added bonus documentary film DVD is a real treat, not only for the glimpses of Mariza and other contemporary fado stars, but for its look back at the roots of the genre and its meaning to Portuguese society. Particularly interesting is its examination of fado's political and social significance -- originally the fado was type of left-wing protest song, but it was subverted in the 1930s by the dictatorship that ruled Portugal until the mid-1970s. The junta made fado music into a propaganda tool, emphasizing romantic love and family values, to the exclusion of older themes about hard work and hard times. After the dictatorship toppled, fado fell into disrepute, but regained popularity in the 1980s and '90s when a new generation cast about for a way to guard Portuguese culture from the encroachments of globalized (American) popular entertainment. A fascinating story, laced with many soulful performances.
Excellent value for money.......2007-04-03
This is an excellent package...this is Mariza at her best..her vocals are emotional and captivating, and the bonus DVD documentary about the Story of Fado is so very informative and entertaining at the same time, including not only live footage of Mariza and her contemporaries, but also rare live footage of the doyenne of the genre, Amalia Rodrigues. That said, I am particularly peeved by the comments of your reviewer, D.Parr "dtakoma" who says that the CD could not be downloaded on his MP3 player and calls it a "crime". Mr. Parr, I just downloaded my CD onto my "IPod" with no trouble at all. Perhaps your player is faulty, or you may have an import copy from Europe or a "bootleg"? The true "crime" is in misleading people!!!

Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a zapateado played by Nino Ricardo) to track 11: Manolo de Huelva accompanying the voice of Manuel Vallejo. Suddenly we are in a cuadro, the natural environment of flamenco, with a group of participants clapping, stamping their feet, and shouting encouragement to the musicians. No longer is it just a man sitting alone on a stage or in a studio, playing the guitar fluently and flawlessly; this is cante hondo, the heart of flamenco, intense and astringent, and the best of this disc's many flavors. --Joe McLellan
Customer Reviews:
This album is for musicians.......2007-05-21
I am a big fan of flamenco, but I am not a musician. I still like and appreciate the music in this album, but I think it is for musicians who can understand the skill.
Four of the Best (before the 2 Pacos).......2007-03-28
This is a high quality recording of four of the best Flamenco Guitarist predecessors to Paco Peña and Paco de Lucia.
This is where my flamenco journey began.......2006-09-08
Not only is this CD flamenco puro at its best, It almost defines flamenco puro. The performers are all famous (sabicas, nino ricardo, manolo de huelva and Melchor de Marchena). The performances are old (40-50 years +) and are true to the spirit of flamenco puro.
I listened to other flamenco guitar performances, but not until I listened to this CD several times did I fall in love with the flamenco guitar.
For all lovers of true Flamenco.......2002-04-12
With all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.
RAW, hard core, Flamenco Guitar!!!.......1999-07-28
If you are looking for something along the lines of Gypsy Soul (HIGHLY recommend it) or Gypsy Passion (also wonderful music), which I was, this most likely is not one for you.
This is R-A-W & hard core Flamenco guitar without much, if any, other vocal or instrumental accompaniment. I guess, the title says it all.
The masters can sure "pick'em".
I am warming up to it......slowly ;-).

If the legendary singer Amália Rodrigues is the queen of fado, the national song genre of Portugal, this debut by Mariza announces her coronation as its crown princess of the 21st century. This twentysomething, Mozambique-born beauty of Portuguese, Spanish, German, African, and Indian descent rapidly rose from the Mouraria district of Lisbon to become fado's newest and brightest star. The 12 selections on this recording are arranged in chamber-style ensembles consisting of bass, piano, classical guitar, and its 12-stringed, Portuguese cousin, the Portuguese viola. Songs like "O Gente Da Minha Terra" and the traditional "Por Ti" ring with a haunting feeling of saudade well beyond Mariza's years. "Maria Lisboa," "Ha Fest Na Mouraria" (with cellist Davide Zaccaria), and "Barco Negro" are peppered with Iberian and African-flavored percussion. Mariza sings these songs of love, God, and country with a youthful vitality that proves that fado is alive and well. --Eugene Holley Jr.

This is the best cd of fado of all time.......2007-06-29
You will listen how is great this singer, how is great Jorge Fernando, the pictures of Mariza on expo 98 in Lisbon, one of my favorite place of the world, this young singer started with this cd, now the best of her discography.
Tear jerking fantasyland and WOW.......2007-06-27
I was watching a Korean movie and a song from Mariza was playing. I swear I kept playing that one part of the movie so I could hear the song over and over. I tracked down the artist and album and bought it here at amazon. OMG - her voice is like a dream. The guitar just enwraps her voice to make the experience that much more. This is an album is perfect after work with a glass of wine and candles. The songs allow you to feel as if your in another place an another time. Happy to get lost in the music. A must buy!!!!

Mariza has a voice that will touch your soul. If you have never heard fado you will be enchanted by the voice of this artist. She has a depth in all range of keys and sings from the heart. You might like to see the DVD she has of a live concert in Lisbon this will truly let you into her private world.
beautiful.......2007-05-08
I first saw Mariza on a "Bravo" video. Although the songs are sung in Portuguese...which I profess to have no translational ability to convert ~ the beauty of Mariza's voice and the purity of the musical accompaniament of this entire CD transcends completely & obliterates the language barrier.
I understand that when Mariza began her career as a singer ~ she was compared to the biggest icon of the Fado of all times...Amália Rodrigues... I have since purchased a CD of Amália & can guarantee...Mariza wins hands up!
Put your head phones on, drop out and tune in...you will be transported to the beautiful!!! :-)

Standing out amid a very strong crop of young new fado singers, Mozambique-born Mariza returns with Transparente, her third album. While her second, Fado Curvo, announced her as a great new voice on the scene, this one reaffirms that flowering promise while expanding the depth of her range. She gets help from great Brazilian cellist, arranger and producer Jacques Morelenbaum, who adds a lush orchestral backdrop to this folksy torch song form, extending the bittersweet melodies even though it does file away some of the edges. No matter, the singer's phrasing and timing are calibrated for drama, and her voice soars with happiness or quivers with passion. Highlights include a panoramic version of the fado traditional "O Silencio da Guitarra" and a small group rendering of "Recusa." Her moving away from the tradition may trouble purist, but this album endears itself easily if given a listen. -- Tad Hendrickson

superb.......2007-04-04
beautifully crafted album with not only Fado but African and Brazilian rhythms. A must for Mariza fans.
modernistic fado.......2006-12-29
I enjoyed this CD very much. Mariza is a talented singer but far from the spectacular Amalia Rodrigues. Call me traditional if you will, I'm still a fan of the poise, dress and sound of old world Portugal. Regardless, this is an enjoyable CD for those wishing to experience fado. A good buy.
MARIZA - A REAL ARTIST.......2006-11-03
Mariza is the best fado/popular singer since Amalia Rodrigues, the great classic fado singer. Her voice is outstanding. Such a hard style of music to sing and she does it so effortlessly. Yes, she is what you can call "MASTER OF HIS ART". This CD, like all her CD's are worthy of 5 stars, in my opinion.
Not Mariza at her best, but still...........2006-08-29
This CD is slightly disappointing. It's much lighter in tone than the other material by Mariza I've bought, and I far preferred the tracks on Fado em Mim and, even better, Fado Curvo, which I think is wonderful. But then, once you've already got those, might as well get this, because she is truly magnificent. If you like fado, you can't fail to like her.
Dark chocolaty-rich voice courts steafast sadness of fado.......2006-03-22
Gorgeous voice with simple settings of a quiet string orchestra and quintessential, spare Portuguese guitars, with a flute or accordion if needed. The dark, chocolaty richness of Mariza's voice naturally courts the quiet, steadfast, but deeply felt sadness of fado. This fado spirit colors everything on this CD, but given that, she displays a broad emotional palette, from utterly deep and dark to perky and romantically hopeful. Strong, compelling performance throughout, much stronger than I expected based on Fado Curvo. Stand-out: tr 13-Dues Lágrimas de Orvalho (slow, dark duet between Marizo and a Parisian street cello, full of pathos and hurt). [41:26]

Amalia Rodrigues is the unchallenged queen of fado--the Portuguese equivalent of flamenco or blues--and one of the greatest singers on record. Her voice is rich and sinuous, with the soulful intensity of a Billie Holiday or Edith Piaf, but a warmth and sense of phrasing all her own. This retrospective ranges from her first recordings in 1952 up to 1970 and gives a superb picture of her work. The instrumentation is simple guitar and Portuguese mandolin, perfectly framing her aching laments and flowing melodies, like a gentler version of flamenco or a continental cousin of Cesaria Evora's morna. The songs include folk and popular material, but the emphasis is on the deep, passionate fado, and it doesn't get any better than this. --Elijah Wald

A lovely overview of the preeminent fadista.......2007-05-07
While I'm no expert on Portuguese fado music, for the last few years I have been buying and listening to CDs from some of the most notable international performers. Many of them, especially Misia, draw inspiration from the late Amália Rodrigues--the most famous and adored singer of fado in the twentieth century. This collection spans several decades of her work, and all the tracks are strong. Priced modestly, the "Art of Amália" is an excellent choice to survey the tremendous skill and passion of this very important singer in the genre. It would make an excellent addition to any fado collection, and it could also make for a nice introduction to fado for fans of world music generally.
amalia.......2006-03-15
What can I say about this magnificent fadista that hasn't already been said. As far as I'm concerned no one can ever even come close to this fantastic artist. She puts so much feelings into every song that I can not help but to get teary eyed.
The voice of the "Iberian Blues".......2005-08-03
Fado is a traditional portuguese music that has many meanings that cannot be found in a dictionary. It deals with fate and "saudade", a feeling best described as a melancholic reminescence of times past, but can also deal with day to day life, its joys and sadnesses. It often is described as the Portuguese answer to Blues, although musically they have very little in common. Amalia was the voice that brought international recognition to this musical style, and what makes her music so special and universally appealing is that her voice transcends the lyrics and stories she sings about. Even if you do not understand portuguese - the sounds of the guitar and "violao" in the background highlighted by her imense range and depth will haunt you into thoughtfulness. Her music is best enjoyed in solitude as it can inspire reflection and introspective. Now, don't let my intelectual musings scare you away - listen and discover it for yourself and find out if you have some "saudade" in you.
Poor quality sound.......2005-03-09
The sound quality of this CD is so poor that I can't bear to listen to it. There is a lot of distortion. If I try to listen to the CD using headphones, then the channel separation becomes a problem; I hear one guitar and the singer's voice in one ear, and the other guitar (too loud) in the other ear. If I put the CD in my CD jukebox, then I cringe every time one of the songs on this disc is played, because it is recorded at a really high level, and that, combined with the distortion, hurts my ears.
The Queen of Fado.......2005-01-28
To listent to Amália Rodrigues is to be hynotized by the sheer parodxical nature of life's eternal beaty and never-ending sadness. Never have I heard such a hauntingly beautiful voice. Her talent is unmatched. You may not understand her language, but the beauty is, you don't have to understand her words to understand her emotion.

one another great cd of this great musician.......2007-05-12
You will listen a real soul of Spain with other influences, Paco de Lucia is not only a great guitar player but he is more, is music is great and this cd is full of great moments of different flamenco.....
good start.......2007-02-13
I found this album while searching for spanish flamenco guitar music and was not disappointed. Since then, I've heard other flamenco guitarists and De Lucia stands alone. His strings sound like rubber as he gracefully, yet powerfully, plays in delicate bursts that still leave me astounded by the enchanted beauty of espana. Every now and then there will come a guitar phrase that blows my mind and this was just what I was looking for. This feeling doesn't stick with me, though. I'm not in Spain and De Lucia is a somewhat cheesy for my taste, but he's probably one of the very best.
Siroco - Falling short of my expectations.......2006-11-04
Not the best Paco in my opinion. You can pass on this one and not miss too much.
INSANE!!!!!!.......2006-10-23
This album made me want to throw my guitars into the fireplace (and I'm not kidding). La Barrossa has to be the finest guitar piece I've ever heard. The word "genius" is often misused on those who really are not. Well...flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia really is. Aside from his rediculously flawless technique, his musical ideas, especially considering the times, are incredibly rich, complex, and just brilliant. Granted, some of Paco's music goes right over my head, and can take a lifetime to disect. This is not music for "flamenco purists." When anything in life runs its course, the universe has a way of shaking it up it (sometimes violently) to keep it in line with its ultimate destiny, neverending growth. Paco de Lucia is that shakeup, and has given us a lifetime of inspiration.
My only quip with this album is the production style. It's in the typical style of most modern flamenco records, drowning everything in reverb. Just my personal preference, I'd prefer a bit more warmth and upfront presence.
I would also highly suggest his Luzia (1998) and Live in America (1993).
Essential for Paco Lovers.......2004-11-01
Paco De lucia is the best guitarest ever in his generation and this album is excellent..u will like it more each time u listen to it...all titles are very good but Gloria Al Nino Ricardo is a ten star rating, one of the best Solea played by Paco de Lucia...infact this album is one of the best albums of Paco...

This was only the second recording for the Guitar Trio, coming a full 16 years after 1980's Friday Night in San Francisco, but it's a fitting sequel. Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin once again demonstrate extraordinary virtuosity, accelerated runs tumbling over one another until identities blur. Repeated listening, however, starts to focus on the subtle differences in nuance, especially in the compositions. Though DeLucia grew up in a tradition of Spanish flamenco guitar, Brazilian rhythmic touches often appear in his work, beginning with the opening "Estiba." The American Di Meola seems influenced by music of the Middle East ("Beyond the Mirage"), and the English McLaughlin has strong affinities with the music of Northern India, most apparent here in his "Letter from India." Ultimately, the impression of dazzling techniques gives way, revealing the group's deeper empathy. --Adam Rains
Customer Reviews:
Frenetic Jazz Guitar Workouts!.......2007-01-17
This cd is a wonderful release by three of the top Jazz guitarists in the world. John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, and Paco de Lucia combine their talents to create a compelling, fast paced acoustic bossa nova tinged jazz record. Each song features elegant riffing and frenetic runs up and down the fretboard. This music is lightning captured on disc, and it makes for a sizzling instrumental masterpiece. 5 stars easy!
Stunning?.......2006-05-26
I'm sorry to all the people who've praised this album so far, this was the only album (of the ones that I've owned) by ANY of the three great guitarists that I gave away for free. For those who enjoy the Azzura and Beyond the Mirage renditions found on this album, I can assure you that there exists a better version of each on Al Di Meola's "The Infinite Desire" album ... don't believe me, just go out and listen to this cd. As for Paco De Lucia, with the realease of "Cositas Buenas" he returns to playing the style that he was born for, and to me that is much more rewarding than hearing him on this cd trying to showcase his ability to go hand in hand with the other two guitarists ... quite frankly he's in a league of his own when it comes to the
guitar! As for John McLaughlin he's more mainstream than the other three ... yeah he has more of those over sappy lovey dovy tunes that corrupted North American music throughout his albums. To me he belongs with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, George Lynch ... the G3 style of guitarists. As good as he is technically, I don't think he's on par with the other two guitarists on this album. Sorry for the directness, it's how I felt about this album! That's why it was an easy give-away.
Magnificent, a night to be remembered.......2005-02-14
When this three got together it was a night to remember. Each guitarist has his own style; Paco is pure gypsy passion and speed, Di Meola is creative strnght and improvisation and Maclughlin has that impeccable playing. The three put together is probably the best guitar live show ever, theres something here for everybody. It carries you effortlessly from flamenco to jazz to blues to the Pink Panther theme song without you even noticing it. I can listen to this album time and time again.
Masterful, someone help me out though.......2004-05-12
We all know how brilliant and hard working each of these musicians are and it shows in the music. I fully recommend the album and due to my love for Eastern and more specifically Indian music, I enjoy the piece, "A letter from India" the most. Does someone know where I can get the sheet music to this cd though? I really want to get it and play with some friends of mine but I haven't found any yet. If you know anything, please Email me at Changewiththeseasons@hotmail.com.
Yea, long mail I know.
Brilliant and beautiful..........2003-02-14
"Friday Night in San Francisco" is both among one of the greatest live recordings of all time and among the greatest classical/flamenco guitar recordings ever. The interplay is stunning between John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, and Paco De Lucia, three of the greatest musical geniuses of our time (and I do not say that lightly...the music these three produce on their own is always full of rich texture, technical brilliance, and musical quality). This '96 recording, while not possessing the same magic as the "Friday Night..." recording (how could it, when that was one of those magical nights when everything looks, sounds, and FEELS good?), is still a wonderful piece of work. It's clear that between these three guitarists is a rapport that stands the test of time, a collaboration the likes of which most bands can only strive for, that sense of mutual cooperation and enjoyment that just enhances the goodness of the music they make. Each person has their moment to shine, either as a soloist, or as a songwriter. I am partial to "Espiritu" and "Azzura," both penned by Al DiMeola, but the opening track, "La Estiba" by Paco De Lucia tells you, right away from the first notes that this is going to be a beautiful listening experience.
This is the kind of music for any occasion. Need background music for a party? This is perfect. Need to unwind after a long day at work? Or maybe you need something to hear while at work? Pop this in. Need to feel good after feeling bad? This music will do it. This is the kind of album that reminds us why we love music in the first place. Of course nothing can rival or compare to "Friday Night...", but this comes in at a close second, and it should belong in any true music lover's collection.
