Fabulous!.......2007-06-04
If you like olde English folk songs this cd is for you. It is outstanding.
Three albums in one package.......2005-05-23
Tim Hart and Maddy Prior became founder members of Steeleye Span, one of Britain's leading folk-rock groups. Before that, they established their reputation playing the folk club circuit. During that time, they recorded two albums of traditional folk songs, now combined to form the first CD here.
The music is suitably primitive with very little musical accompaniment, sometimes none at all. These albums were apparently each recorded in one afternoon with no second takes although Tim and Maddy wanted to re-record some songs. There are mistakes but one of the biggest is when Tim incorrectly pronounces Keighley (Key-ley instead of Keith-ley) in Dalesman's lament. Re-recording would not have helped there since Tim didn't realize his mistake until the album was released.
Maddy and Tim each sing solo and there are also some duets. Tim's rustic voice will not appeal to everybody although I quite like it. Nevertheless, Maddy was then (and still is) a class act and the best tracks are those that feature Maddy. My favorites here include Maid that's deep in love, Bruton tow, The brisk butcher, The stately southerner, Copshawholme fair, Horn of the hunter, Queen Eleanor's confession and Captain Wedderburn's courtship. You don't get songs like those anymore. One of Tim's solos (Paddy stole the rope) is an amusing song about two men and a rope.
After forming Steeleye Span, it came as a surprise that they recorded this third album of old English folk songs in 1972. Unlike the previous two albums, this was recorded professionally and includes three non-traditional songs. While the music is still clearly traditional (albeit more polished) with none of the rock influence of Steeleye Span, there are none of the mistakes that you can find on the first two. This album is on the second CD. It's a pity there wasn't a fourth album to fill the spare capacity.
Maddy does nearly all the singing although Tim gets some solos (The ploughboy and the Cockney, Dancing at Whitsun) and joins Maddy on other songs (Of all the birds, Westron wynds, Sorry the day I was married, Adam catched Eve). Tim is mainly preoccupied playing guitars, dulcimer, harmonium, psaltery and tabor. Other musicians (not from Steeleye Span) play mandolin, string bass, percussion, bells and electric bass. This may seem a lot of instruments for a traditional folk album but of course, they aren't all used on the same tracks. Quite rightly, the dominant instrument here is Maddy's superb voice, one of the finest that has ever graced the world of folk music. Among the highlights are The false knights on the road, I live not where I love, Three drunken maidens and Serving girls holiday.
If you enjoy traditional folk music and you didn't buy the albums when they were previously available separately, you will surely enjoy this fine collection.
Great duo Brit Folk.......2004-12-22
Wonderful to have these hard to find albums ('68/'69 & '71) together in one place. The first two contain songs like "Bruton Town" & "Maid That's Deep in Love" also done (quite differently) a bit later by Pentangle, classics like "Farewell Nancy" & one Steeleye Span does too, "Copshawholme Fair." Disc Two is "Summer Solstice" with just a bit more instrumentation, & one of the great Brit folk duet albums I think. Wonderful versions of songs like "I Live Not Where I Love," "False Knight on the Road," & upbeat clever ones like "3 Drunken Maidens." These are very straightforward versions of the songs, but lovely interaction of their voices, which are even more evident here than in Steeleye I think. & many great solo ones too. Sound isn't wonderful (esp. disc one), as original recordings were done quickly with very basic equipment, & shows a bit in remastering. Much better on the more complicated "Summer Solstice." Anyway, IMO it doesn't matter. Pity they didn't do more duos, but these are gems IMO, and show off two of the best singers of this music in the past 25 years. Interesting, brief interviews with them in liner notes too.

+ 1/2 stars...English Folk At Its Finest.......2004-11-11
Before forming Steeleye Span with Ashley Hutchings in 1969, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior had recorded two albums, FOLK SONGS OF OLDE ENGLAND VOL. 1 and VOL. 2 in 1968. After recording the first three Steeleye Span albums, Hart and Prior returned to the studio in 1972 to record this minor classic of traditional English Folk.
Unlike the rock elements (drums and electric guitars) introduced into Steeleye Span recordings, this is an unplugged affair with Hart on guitars and dulcimer. Vocal chores are split between Hart and Prior, sometimes singing solo (Prior on the delicate "The False Knight on the Road" and "I Live Not Where I Love," Hart on "The Ploughboy and the Cockney" and the haunting "Dancing at Whitsun") and occasionally singing duet ("Of All the Birds," "Westron Wynde," "Sorry the Day I Was Married" and "Adam Catched Eve").
Hart and Prior are augmented by Andy Irvine on mandolin (he would later form the celtic band Planxty), John Ryan on string bass, Gerry Conway on percussion and bells, and Pat Donaldson on electric bass.
All told, this is English folk of the highest order. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Ahh! Maddy!.......2004-06-25
This will be a brief and short review: Buy this album! -- the track "Dancing At Whitsun" is more than worth the price of this cd! It is perhaps the best track you wil; ever hear on any cd by an artist of any genre! I love it! Maddy Prior and Tim Hart have made a great contributioin to celtic/folk/rock traditional music in Steeleye Span . . . and this is equal to anything they did in that group! :)
The heart of Steeleye Span strike again.......2000-07-12
Two of the core members of Steeleye Span get together to share more progressive English folk music. Maddy Prior & Tim Hart have been with Steeleye Span since the beginning and it really shows! There polished repartee is a lot lighter on electrical instruments and has more vocals than most Steeley Span music. THIS IS A MUST HAVE CD!

During that time, they recorded two albums of traditional folk songs, of which this is the first. The music is suitably primitive with very little musical accompaniment, sometimes none at all. Re-recording would not have helped there since Tim didn't realize his mistake until the album was released.
Maddy and Tim each get their share of solo vocals (there are also some duets) but Tim's rustic voice will not appeal to everybody although I quite like it. Nevertheless, Maddy was then (and still is) a class act and the best tracks are those that feature Maddy. On the second volume (which I've already reviewed), Maddy does most of the singing and that, together with the extra experience that Tim and Maddy had in folk music, makes it a better collection. My favorites here include Maid that's deep in love, Bruton tow, The brisk butcher and The stately southerner.
If you are interested in traditional folk music performed in a style close to its origins centuries ago, this is as close as you are likely to find on CD.
Wonderful.......2005-03-29
Ranges from the very haunting to the very funny - all with beautiful melodies and delicate arrangements.
Acoustic Loveliness.......2003-02-21
This album is a bit like listening to an acoustic version of Steeleye Span. The songs are well-picked and varied. Maddy Prior and Tim Hart sing expressively and harmonize wonderfully together. "Dalesman's Litany" is one of the most striking songs I have ever heard. An altogether enjoyable album.
Folk Songs of Olde England.......2000-07-10
It's a pleasure for me to sit by the fire with all the lights off and listen to this wonderful voice.

Folk duo's best album as a duo.......2005-05-03
Tim Hart and Maddy Prior were founder members of Steeleye Span in 1969 and remained with the group until its first disbandment in 1978. Before that, Tim and Maddy had recorded a couple of albums of old English folk songs. They were recorded cheaply on primitive equipment and sound as close as you are ever likely to get on record to raw, traditional folk music.
Maddy does nearly all the singing although Tim gets some solos (The ploughboy and the Cockney, Dancing at Whitsun) and joins Maddy on other songs (Of all the birds, Westron wynds, Sorry the day I was married, Adam catched Eve). lovely, lively traditional music.......2004-02-14
I bought this album looking for more of Steeleye Span's early work, before they began to sound like a 70's rock band. I already loved Please to See the King and Below the Salt, their most traditonal albums, and Hark the Village Wait, which is also wonderful despite the banal drumming, but found that I disliked their later, more electric albums.
Summer Solstice is delightful. All acoustic, with 2 engaging voices, plenty of spunk, lively traditional rhythm, and an alternate version of one of my favorite Steeleye songs, False Knight on the Road -- here a gorgeous full-throated Maddy Prior solo. (On Please to See the King, it's a fast-talking riddle-song duet between 2 men, I'm not sure who -- the CD I have doesn't list credits.) Most of the songs and snippets of song are traditional, and the one or two that are modern fit in well with the others. I'd recommend this album to anyone who likes traditional acoustic music.
Timeless. Not Just For Renaissance Revival Fair Loonys!.......2003-02-26
Lilting and romantic collection conjuring images of formalized courtship from the time of maidens, knights, chastity belts and men in tight. The passion that lay beneath the rituals burns through with Maddy and Tim. Not overtly historical or folky if you know what i mean. You will be moved. Merlin! My scepter and bong! At once!
The Perfect Medieval CD.......2002-02-16
I was given a (bad) copy of this CD on tape a long time ago. I have since worn it out because I love it so much. There is a choice of love songs, from 'I love him but he's so far away' to 'I wish I'd never met him in the first place'. Lighthearted songs and serious - there's even a drinking song!
Perfect for any Medievalist.

Traditional English folk close to authentic.......2005-04-18
Tim Hart and Maddy Prior became founder members of Steeleye Span, one of Britain's leading folk-rock groups. Before that, they established their reputation playing the folk club circuit. During that time, they recorded two albums of traditional folk songs, of which this is the second. The music is suitably primitive with very little musical accompaniment, sometimes none at all. Maddy does most of the singing although Tim gets some solo vocals and there are also some duets. Tim's rustic voice will not appeal to everybody although I quite like it. Nevertheless, Maddy was then (and still is) a class act and the best tracks are those that feature Maddy.
Among my favorites here are Copshawholme fair, Horn of the hunter, Queen Eleanor's confession and Captain Wedderburn's courtship. You don't get songs like those anymore. One of Tim's solos (Paddy stole the rope) is an amusing song about two men and a rope.
If you are interested in traditional folk music performed in a style close to its origins centuries ago, this is as close as you are likely to find on CD.
Two beautifully complementary voices.......2001-12-14
I first became interested in British folk music in the early '80s, and a friend introduced me to a number of songs from this album. Ever since, the voices of Tim Hart and Maddy Prior have symbolized for me what's best about folk vocals.
The best-known track on this CD is probably "Fiddler's Green". I have since heard many other renditions of the song, but none has even come close to Hart and Prior for sheer beauty. Tim Hart's voice features most prominently in that song, and in general features more prominently on this CD than on Volume 1. Maddy Prior's voice is certainly indispensible here, but she plays more of a supporting role in most of the tracks.
Pre-Steeleye Folk Magic.......2000-02-11
Before forming Steeleye Span, Tim Hart and Maddy Prior were a major attraction around the folk clubs of Britain. Although understandably a little thin on production values, this is a wonderful period piece which is every bit as enjoyable now as when it was first recorded back in the late sixties. Maddy's vocals are as glorious as ever; Tim's slightly nasal delivery is the only relatively weak point but he provides effective harmony and instrumental support. A very satisfying mix of humourous and more reflectve songs, this is an album of timeless quality which gives some interesting pointers to the direction Steeleye Span would soon be taking. Definitely worth adding to your collection.
