Rating: 'Excellent'
Standouts include "The Old Dark Lord of Mordor"... "Mnemonics" is a hoot..."Great Divide" is beautiful.
Product Description:
"See, I'm the kind of fella who forgets his cerebellum when his pesky genetellum get involved."
-"Mnemonics" "So we packed our bags and headed out to Minas Trith. Met the Gollum, who talks like Yoda with a lisp. Went through Tudor and Fordor; I thought Hatchback might be next!"
-"Old Dark Lord of Mordor" "In ancient Greece, we now have found, they turned the ways of love around. As stoically as they knew how, they looked at love from both sides now."
-"It's All Been Done Before"
"Tickle" carries on the witty, wordy, funny tradition of Tom Lehrer and Cole Porter in a collection of jazzy comic songs on topics from the history of sex to the last sour years of Frodo Baggins to the contents of Elvis Presley's refrigerator.
Other highlights are sendups of the Irish ("The Irish Bachelor Farmer") and of Jersey girls, and a funny exercise in writing a song using the fewest possible words ("Sunday").
The CD also mixes in some more heartfelt songs, including a homey description of the joys of a long marriage ("Sanctuary") and an elegy to a lost father ("The Great Divide").
The many guest artists include NYC funnyman Teddy Goldstein and Brian Gundersdorf of "We're About 9." The CD is produced by the duo Andy & Denise.
This is a CD that uses wit and laughter to entertain...qualities that are often hard to find.

Excellent argument for watching Shakespeare's plays.......2005-11-29
These are well worth the listen, but they will probably not set your toes to tapping as you might to performances by, for example, the Renaissance specialist band Piffaro.

Sing-along science, now there's a high concept. Singing Science offers a tsunami of information about astronomy, biology, chemistry, and ecology. Call it a prepubescent high-sci primer. But parents be warned: So much information comes so quickly in many of these sing-alongs that younger kids may have trouble understanding the words, let alone comprehending their meaning. Repeat plays are recommended. That said, scientific learning is often supported by familiar nursery rhyme melodies. You probably never were taught about sea creatures to the tune of "Home on the Range" (here called "Home on the Sea"), or learned that the study of fish ("Ichthyology") is a hummable proposition. But your kids might well go for the method and the melodies (an explanation of "Ecology"--complete with talk of "symbiotic relationships"--is sung to "Pop Goes the Weasel"). With 31 tracks exploring the world that we live in, the disc features an array of musical styles, from rap to classical, opening up the seemingly unlimited knowledge of science for young minds. For parents, however, who may have to further explain the many concepts, it might make you feel more like a mad scientist. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Excellent introduction to science!!!.......2005-04-29
I love giving these CD's for birthday presents to my children's friends! I highly recommend this CD!
Science Fun for school-age kids.......2002-11-12
My 6- and 9-year-old sons love this recording and ask for it frequently. Most of the songs are upbeat, lively and fun, not to mention informative. But as a parent, I don't like the way the writers have taken liberties with rhyme and syllable emphasis to fit the lyrics into the tunes. And they have also sometimes taken liberties with scientific accuracy in order to make the song "work", such as when they sing about "amoebian families". These songs also seem to be particularly likely to get stuck in my head, much to my chagrin.
The scientific emphasis of this collection is heavy on Biology, with a little Ecology, Astronomy, and Chemistry and others thrown in.
The CD comes with complete lyrics to all 31 songs, which is good because they are sometimes a little complicated and difficult to hear correctly when sung.
This CD teaches a lot of what I call Science Trivia. It is undoubtedly impressive when my 9-year-old recites the chemical formulas for sugar or aspirin, identifies the phylum to which sponges belong, and explains that "annelida reproduce as hermaphrodites" (which simply means that earthworms and their cousins have both male and female parts in one organism, and are therefore able to reproduce without the need of a partner), or my 6-year-old recites the body parts of an insect, identifies the study of fish as icthyology or explains how to say "yes" in several different languages. However, as cute as it is, real science learning is much more about understanding than it is about memorizing facts. Still, this CD can jump-start discussions on several scientific topics, if you and your children are so inclined.

This attractive package comes with the sort of lustrous and vivid cover art reproductions Harmonia Mundi is known for, as well as a 69-page book of notes in four languages, complete with real binding. Musically, though, these studied historically correct performances are flat. They lack a sense of fun and daring. The dances are a bit pedestrian. And though there may be no way of positively historically verifying that these, mostly anonymous, 17th-century tunes were meant to elicit love, joy, and laughter, I'll put my money on the theory. --Gwendolyn FreedCustomer Reviews:

Among other things, Henry VIII appears to have been responsible for bringing the violin to England. The original group of Jewish-Italian string players who came to work for Henry started a musical institution that continued as part of the royal household until it was disbanded in the 1920s. The music featured here represents "the sort of music the violin consort would have played during Queen Elizabeth's reign." Not surprisingly, many of the pieces are dances; others are consort pieces; still others are arrangements of popular songs of the day. The seven members of the Parley of Instruments--which in this case includes violins, violas, bass violin, lute, virginals, and drum--take full charge of this music and quite carry us away with their obvious enthusiasm and energetic performances. This is one of those rare recordings that both enlightens and entertains. A treasure that belongs in every early music library. --David VernierMusic Album:
