Album Description

From the time of Pythagoras, about 2600 years ago, music has been played on glass in various ways. In 1761, Benjamin Franklin invented the `glass armonica', which works on the same principle as running your finger around the rim of a wine glass. On Songs from Earth, William Wilde Zeitler has used the glass armonica's haunting, ethereal sound to create a moving collection of peaceful songs for yoga, massage or relaxation. Accompanied by harp, wine glass chorus, and other instruments, this music has a melodic spaciousness that is balm for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars New life for an old instrument........2007-05-17

The instrument that is central to this CD was first invented by Benjamin Franklin. It's a series of graduating glass bowls connected in the center by a rod of some kind. The whole thing turns and the edge of the bowls are played by hand. At least, that is what I understand of the instrument and it's history. Reagardless of whether you understand the mechanics of the device or not, the music is wonderfully restful, enjoyable and tranquil. I use it for my yoga sessions. I'm really pleased the insturment has been found is being played again.

Great Music - for relaxing, calming atmosphere- just feeling better about the world in general!

5 out of 5 stars Jana Wanner - Northeast Indiana.......2007-01-18

What wonderful melodies. Ethereal really. I am a teacher of primary students. They enjoy these sounds because of the calmly and thoughtful feelings they exude. I am a Christian and stay away from mystic items. I don't consider this music or style a mystic/dark genre. It is truly heavenly and peaceful. So welcome in this world. I have several of William Zeitler's music and other armonica artists. Being a lover of history, it was a wonderful discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Music from the Astral World!.......2005-07-21

I love this CD! It has bcome one of my favorites! Haunting melodies that stay with you for days....although the title is Songs from Earth, I feel a more appropriate description is music from the astral world. Wlm Zeitler has done a superb job with this CD!

5 out of 5 stars relaxing and beautiful music.......2004-10-25

My daughter (then 8 years old) bought this CD from Mr. Zeitler at a New Age fair. She wanted something to listen to at bedtime, partly to "sing her to sleep" and partly to block out sounds from the rest of the house. We both fell in love with this CD - I wish Amazon had samples to listen to - the glass armonica has a hauntingly unique, sweet, almost echoing sound. Imagine the music of the harp played on wine glasses (rubbing a wet finger around the rim.) The songs on the CD were composed specifically for the instrument, and would fit into any meditation or new age music collection. My daughter is now searching for similar CDs and of all the New Age offerings I have her listen to she says, "I want something quieter and calmer like the 'glass' CD." It's beautiful music. We highly recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars Novel Approach.......2003-10-01

I always think of this album as a turning point for Judy Collins. Although, if pressed I would be hard put to justify myself. There is something about both the songs she has written and the way she sings them that is different from her previous albums. Perhaps they are more upbeat, or contain some surprising personal insights into what makes the singer who she is. Whatever the reason, Shameless seems to be the completion of the process that started with Sanity and Grace, several years before.

There is considerable variety in the songs, most of which are originals. The optimism of the first three songs - 'Bright Morning Star', 'Melody', and 'Mountain Girl' - is subtle, but infectious and carries forward even in the face of two deeply touching social statements - 'Lily of the Valley' and 'Song for Sarajevo.' The album offers a wide spectrum of subject and styling strongly voices by a Judy Collins who seems suddenly to be 20 years younger. A surprise and delight.

Ostensibly, Shameless is intended as a musical companion to her novel by the same name. Of course, there is no way that an artist of Collins' caliber can produce a work that is not a reflection of her life and beliefs, and the same is true here. Couple this with her skills as a singer/songwriter and you have the basic ingredients for an album that is not only memorable, but grows better with repeated listenings.

      5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2000-12-08

This is Judy Collins at her very best--crystal clear voice, subdued musical background and subtle echo. Although the songs are written to relate to her fascinating novel by the same name, they stand fine by themselves with no novel knowledge. Most of the songs (to my ear) are new material and they are so beautiful! I especially liked Bright Morning Stars, Kerry Dancer and the tragic Lily of the Valley. Also included is Song for Sarajevo--a sad musical mourning for the war-ravaged people in that city. There is something so haunting about Judy Collins voice, even now I can close my eyes and hear those beautiful musical tones . . . .

Therapy?'s sixth studio album is a rather sophisticated proposition. Where the Therapy? of 2000's retrospective, So Much for the Ten Year Plan, was the epitome of heads-down rock, their sixth studio album is, well, different. "Gimme Back My Brain" and the sinister "Stalk & Slash" attack with thundering drums and Andy Cairns's blood-curdling bark, but with the likes of "Dance," "I Am the Money," and "Alright" playing up their Nine Inch Nails ambitions, they've emerged as a world-class metal outfit. It's a menacing makeover, with fantastically clinical production adding an unnerving layer of grime and attitude that makes the otherwise glam-rock pop of "Body Bag Girl" something that would make Marilyn Manson proud. To the raw aggression and murky production, add the best hooks, riffs, and songs of their career. Shameless is Therapy?'s most balanced album to date. --Dan Gennoe

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shameless is simply awesome..........2005-01-11

I'm not sure how many kids have been writing on these boards, but the immaturity flows in their selfishness. This is a great album... it's not like any other album they put out. That's a good thing. People end up living in the past hoping for more and more of an artists "old" work. Get over it. You might not instantly fall in love with them from this CD, but if you're a Therapy? fan, you should love it in a short time. It has pep, it has a cuteness to it, but it's a great rock album. Lay off and Andy and the like, they have been a guitar crunching band with many styles, but rock and roll is at the heart of it. Shameless is yet another level of this and a great one.

1 out of 5 stars Should have been better.......2003-04-13

I've been a Therapy? fan for quite some time now, and still consider them one of my favorite bands. "Nurse" was a raw, yet interesting mix of styles. "Troublegum" was great when I was younger, but in retrospect seems poppy and largely substance free. "Infernal Love" was a complex, ambitious album, and probably their best work. "Semidetached" seemed to blend aspects of the previous three albums into a pop/rock amalgum that also worked well. However, since "Semidetached", Therapy? seems to have struggled to put out decent work. "Suicide Pact - You First" had its moments, as well as some of the best instrumentation on any T? album. But Andy Cairns newly-adopted growly voice made "SPYF" a step backwards for the band. If "SPYF" was a step backwards, "Shameless" was another one, followed by a drop off of a steep precipice. While "Dance" was a good song, and "I am the Money" and "This One's For You" were OK, the whole rest of this album was an overly dark, growly-voiced, big dumb rock festival. Let's hope T?'s forthcoming "High Anxiety" will be more of a return to form. I'd hate to think where the next step backwards would land them.

      3 out of 5 stars Uneven effort.......2002-02-22

They're back. They're mad. Just not as mad as they were last time, I'm afraid. The beginning of the album is great, though.
"Gimme Back My Brain" is the most energetic and kicking song I've heard for a long time. "Dance", "This One's For You", "I Am The Money", "Joey" and "Stalk & Slash" are also excellent songs. BUT... it's the rest of the material here that just doesn't make it. I have grown to expect this band to raise riot or at least be a bit more menacing than this. Instead, half of the material here is just boring and safe midway rock songs. AOR might still be a too bad insult, but this doesn't give me too much expectations for the band's future.

5 out of 5 stars best overall album from Therapy? since troublegum.......2001-12-17

I had high expectations from the boys from Ireland when I heard this album was coming out. I was not let down. This is the most solid album they have released in years. Suicide Pact had some [poor] songs on it, and lets face it, tramline and the boy's asleep are downright awful songs that keep semi-detached from being perfect. Not since troublegum has an album this good been released. It has no [lousy] songs on it. Every song is solid, although there are a few that are just run of the mill therapy? and don't really impress me much. Andy and company have given up trying to please the mainstream, and are making whatever they want to. Considering most of their fans are diehard(aka people like me), we are no longer surprised by anything they do. Everything is a new and original work. This album impresses me for it's diversity. Overall, this is the best album from the best band nobody has ever heard in years, and will be hard to top.

4 out of 5 stars Exceeds My Expectations.......2001-11-03

I've never been able to call Therapy? a metal band because of their over-bearing melodic structure, so I've always referred to them as a band caught somewhere inbetween the grunge movement of the early 90s and the alt-metal movement of the mid 90s. Therapy?'s sixth studio album, "Shameless", shows no signs of them slowing down. But, it does rid of the cliche metal of "Suicide Pact" as well as the "love your neighbor" feel of "Infernal Love". I've always believed that Therapy? have had the ability to make a record as accomplished as Troublegum, but they have yet to do so. "Shameless" leaves me with the least amount of overbearing complaints since Troublegum. "Gimme Back My Brain" starts out the album with some pure rock 'n' roll intensity. "Dance" shows a hint of 80s new wave influence through Andy's vocals. "Wicked Man" may even show a little bit of a Mike Muir influence from Andy (after all, he is a fan of early 80s hardcore punk). "Theme from DeLorean" comes out of nowhere with some awesome riffs and strange vocal deliveries from Andy, as well as a bass-driven build-up that comes to a close with a nice drum fill. "Joey" also intro's with some great riffs and catchy vocals. "Endless Psychology" switches between metal riffs and melodic progressive strings effortlessly. "Shameless" ends on a very different note then the one it started on, though. "Body Bag Girl" and "Stalk and Slash" are both songs that have a more dark, gothic feel than most Therapy? fans are used to. However, "Shameless" is an accomplished record by a band that has never seemed to get the attention they've deserved over the years. These masters of melody are impossible not to like. The product of such great hooks along with great musicianship is a classic recipe.

4 out of 5 stars Glam Will Never Go Away.......2000-10-23

I bought this CD after visiting Stevie Rachelle's Website. If you don't know who he is, chances are you are here by accident. Anyhow, Stevie lent his voice to some of these tracks, which also includes collaboration with Steve Summers from Pretty Boy Floyd and Bruce Kullick (ex-Kiss). What you get is a pretty decent glam CD, much in the vain of PBF or early Poison. If that's your sound, then this CD is worth picking up. I guess this guy is German or something, as he's got a following in Europe. As you know, glam kind of got stamped to death by Nirvana in North America, but I must say it is nice to listen to a fun, party-rock CD once in awhile to remember that life is still about a good time, not crying in your soup.

3 out of 5 stars Too country for me, but really good........2000-10-02

This music is way too country for my tastes, but I couldn't resist listening to a CD titled "Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay, or Dead." Keep in mind, however, that all country is too country for me. Most of the lyrics are hilarious, and Kacey has a great voice! When the songs get more serious, her voice soars without the annoying melodrama and screeching of self-titled "divas." Her voice is as real as the lyrics. If you like country, or irony, give this CD a listen!

      5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!!.......2000-09-19

Kacey Jones is smart, funny, and very talented. This collection of songs illustrates her stylistic versatility and her keen ear for how a song should be presented. Self produced, this album features some of the finest musicians in Nashville. Kacey's duet with the legendary Delbert McClinton, "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" is sure to sell albums, but dig deeper and you're sure to find satisfaction with the more serious selections, too. Kacey is irreverant and funny but neither of those characteristics overshadow her supreme musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars Kacey lands a winner with new album.......2000-09-15

This is really funny, sweet and entertaining stuff! Jones has a great, husky voice that really shines on songs like Christmas Card From A Hooker and Over The Rainbow. It's humor mixed with sincerity but she pulls it all off! Love the remake of You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly Too, she and Delbert McClinton make a swell pair.

      Album Description

David Starobin's award-winning "New Music with Guitar" series continues with the release of Volume Six. This CD includes solo and chamber works written between 1992 and 2000, performed by Grammy-nominated guitar virtuoso David Starobin, backed by Pulitzer prize-winning composer/percussionist George Crumb and Speculum Musicae. The disc features guitar solos by Gunther Schuller, Michael Starobin, Richard Wernick, Melinda Wagner, David Liptak, and Paul Lansky--all in premiere recordings. Volume Six also contains George Crumb's "Mundus Canis"--with the composer performing (and whispering and yelling) on percussion. Starobin and Crumb have toured throughout the USA and Europe with this series of "dog portraits" delighting audiences and critics with these five humoresques. To conclude the disc, Elliott Carter's fantastically inventive sextet, "Luimen" is performed by Speculum Musicae, New York City's virtuoso new music band. London's "Classical Guitar" magazine says of David Starobin: "First and foremost there is the incredible David Starobin. His contribution has been invaluable, without price, impossible to estimate. If there were an award for the player most likely to further the cause of the guitar in the musical mainstream, we would be inclined to nominate David Starobin"

4 out of 5 stars I'm going to risk buying this..........2007-07-16

I heard perhaps three of the Joshua Variations on my local NPR station the other day and they were outstanding. Merry, light, captivating... not the sort of music I associate with "new music." I'm afraid the rest of the pieces will live down to my expectations, new music-wise. I'll check back when I get the CD.
