About the Artist
Perhaps Jo Bray is not the first African singer, songwriter, producer, record entrepreneur to enter into the American Gospel Music Industry; but one thing is for sure: he is a musical genius. Born and raised in Ghana, Jos full name is Joseph Benjamin Bray. He was all of 7 years old when his uncle-in-law, a pianist, introduced him to the piano. Beginning with classical pieces, he learned to play church hymns and Ghanaian Traditional Choral pieces which helped him to start playing for his church and also for his high school choir. His musical abilities enabled him to become the music director for his college gospel group back in Ghana. It was during his college years at Southern Connecticut State University that Jo had the vision for Sound Word Music & Entertainment. Prior to starting the label Jo formed the Praise and Worship team for the Campus Crusade Ministry, served as the gospel choir director for ST Lukes Episcopal Church in New Haven, and currently serves as a musician at Church On The Rock located in New Haven, Connecticut. A classically trained musician and church "band guy" for many years, Jo draws on God and his musical background for creativity. Besides the piano, he enjoys playing the guitar which he learned to play during his college years. Jo tracked, played all piano and synthesizer in the "Nations" album. As a producer and a record executive, Jo looks forward to the challenges ahead. His goal is to produce more Christian artists, write new material and promote positive, cutting edge sounds to the ever changing music industry.
Nations, Music, Jo Bray, Urban gospel in a new style called "RWB-Rhythm and World Beats". RWB is a mixture of hip-hop,R &B, Reggae, Jazz, pop and African Highlife Music.

When Tommy Emmanuel opened this new album with the fire-breathing "Cantina Senese," I suspected he was finally going to do the rip-roaring country-old-timey-Celtic-jazz CD featuring the crowd-pleasing tunes he pulls out during concerts. But it doesn't take him long to slip into the more lyrical playing that has turned up on his recent discs. And that's not a bad thing. Emmanuel is the kind of player who scares other guitarists to death with the range of his influences and the precision of his technique. You can hear both on tracks like "Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag," with Emmanuel doing the 1930s Django Reinhardt thing. But the album is also full of delicate reveries like "The Mystery" and "The Digger's Waltz," the latter based on the military "Taps." The only shortcoming is "Walls," with Emmanuel and his wife, Elizabeth Watkins, in a vocal duet. It's heartfelt but sentimental, and its country-pop sound is like a speed bump in the middle of the disc. But he quickly redeems this "what the hell?" moment with "Lewis & Clark," as he plays gentle cross-rhythms against a melody that unfolds like an epic tale. The Mystery isn't definitive Tommy Emmanuel, but it shows why he's not only one of the finest players, but also one of the most detailed composers for finger-style guitar. --John Diliberto

Finger Lickin' Good!.......2007-05-12
What a player! This is a must have for any guitar fan! It's hard to believe all of this is done by finger picking. Chet Atkins found a gold mine in Tommy Emmanuel! This guy can flat play! He is so good that I don't care for the songs that have vocals. All I want to hear is his guitar! This is the first CD of his that I have bought, and I will be buying the rest of his arsenal. I was totally impressed and I'm more of an electric guitar fan. But, I apprciate any talented virtuoso styles. If you like guitar music, then check this guy out!
Great CD.......2007-01-16
This is a fabulous cd. It is no wonder he has been nominatted for a Grammy Award.
Tommy is brilliant.......2007-01-11
I just recently was exposed to this great artist when I saw a TV special on PBS. He impressed me so much I bought "Mystery", and after listening to it bought a second CD, "Midnight Drive". I am amazed at the sounds Tommy produces with his guitar on "Mystery". The music is beautiful and thoughtful. His music has a classical feeling, while remaining at grass roots level. No guiitar music lover should be without "Mystery" for their collection.
Tommy rules.......2007-01-10
Tommy Emmanuel is THE top guitar player. His music is great to listen to and his concerts are amazing. He puts his soul into his music and you can definately hear that in this CD. A must listen to.
Great !.......2007-01-10
My favorite : The Mystery ... a very great guitar player , you'll appreciate his smooth and free playing . I've been told he might have been created by an extraterrestrian experience for having such fast and long fingers...

Tommy Emmanuel is a veteran acoustic guitar player from Australia, where he's reputed to be a legend. He's written pop songs for Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau, and Sheena Easton and released skillfully played, if generic, smooth jazz albums. But it's as a solo acoustic finger-style player that Emmanuel makes jaws drop, and that's all you hear on this brilliant album. Emmanuel is an eclectic guitarist whose playing is infused with old-timey jazz on "Timberlake Road," New Age melodicism on "Those Who Wait," and a Celtic-classical tinge on "Padre." Emmanuel is capable of a dizzying array of harmonic effects, off-hand ornamentation, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and just about anything else you can do on an acoustic guitar. But while it's the technique that amazes, it's the songs that keep drawing you back with their intricate melodic invention. Perhaps because he's an unrepentant punster, Emmanuel is able to create just enough distance, with a cocked sideways glance, to keep his music on the right side of the line between sentimental and sublime. --John Diliberto
Album Description
2002 release from the native Australian who has 4 Platinum & 3 Gold albums. This is his first solo acoustic album and finally being released internationally on Steve Vai's Newly created Favored Nations Acoustic imprint. HDCD.

This man plays the music of my soul. Every song is happy, soothing, and pleasent to listen to.
My favorite.......2007-01-10
A book of songs in this album have been edited so you can try and play as he does ... so bad it's a bit hard to have the same velocity as he does. Here Luttrel for a smart sample.
The Best.......2006-05-22
The best acoustic guitar playing I've heard to date. Absolutely beautiful! Every aspiring guitar player should own and treasure this CD.
Amazing!!.......2006-05-04
This album is absolutely amazing! Technically and melodically remarkable. The sound is difficult to explain. You really must just listen to understand the beauty of this album. The tracks range from ballad to all out jams. Highly recommended!

Tommy Emmanuel is in my opinion a giant amongst giants. This CD is not only technically fantastic but is smooth and silky as well.

Endless Road.......2007-06-18
This album first captivated me for Tommy's sheer technical wizardry. After watching his early 2007 concert in Atlanta, and thereafter reading up more on whom I consider a music phenomenon, I began to understand why I could listen to this album in its entirety on a regular basis (it's become a permanent resident of my car's CD changer). Tommy seems to be able to tell a story with each song, with notes or measures emoted like words. Amazing. I'll venture to say, as a guitarist myself who strives to do so, that Tommy has gone beyond virtuosity to using guitar music as a language.
Some favorites are "Bella Soave" where Tommy slips in contrasty chord transitions, "Angelina" - whose universal likability is confirmed by several guitarists doing it on YouTube, and "Struttin," which creates a 20s imagery.
A musical treasure, in my opinion.
Tommy Emmanuel.......2007-01-24
Tommy's a fantastic guitarist. You have to see him life to appreciate his guitar talent. This is another CD that doesn't do him justice.
Dear Future Tommy Emmanuel Fan.......2007-01-17
If you love acoustic guitar, this album is definitely for you. Tommy Emmanuel can play with the best of them. Just turn up the volume and let the acoustic sound wash over you.
This is almost a totally solo album, with the exception of backup vocals on "I Still Can't Say Goodbye". Several of the songs follow the fingerstyle of Chet Atkins, and others follow the style of Merle Travis. Highlights include: "(The Man With The) Green Thumb", "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (this arrangement alone is worth the price of the album), as well as the title track "Endless Road".
If you're a long time Tommy Emmanuel fan and you don't yet have this album, don't hesitate to get it. It continues Tommy's very high standard for acoustic guitar music. If you're not a Tommy Emmanuel fan yet, but you've loved the guitar music of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, then this album is definitely for you. If you're new to acoustic guitar music altogether, then this is still a good place to start. I recommend this album as well as Tommy's new album "The Mystery". Buy both of them, and if you're not hooked, then, to coin a phrase, check your pulse.
Perfect Road Trip Music.......2007-01-12
The album "Endless Road" is a very satisfying blend of contemporary, jazz and "controlled jamming" music. It is one of the few albums I can listen to in its entirety and repeatedly. The first time I heard Emmanuel's "Over the Rainbow", I had to pull off the road and wait for the radio to identify the artist. It is shear acoustic artistry! The balance of the album is not remakes of earlier or familiar tunes, and each cut is sufficiently unique and satisfying to play during long commutes/drives or when needing time to think things over or when your spirits need a gentle uplift!
Perfection.......2007-01-11
According to Chet Atkins and myself Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest living guitar player. This disk is no exception. Tommy sits there and plays and you think there are many guitars playing at once. Everyone should have a chance to hear him.

A veteran of long years on the Boston club scene and a stint as sideman to former J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf, guitarist Johnny A. originally self-released this masterful, tasteful solo record to much local acclaim, and then guitar ace Steve Vai added the musician to the roster of his label. Proving that the term "guitar god" has too often been misapplied in the post-Van Halen era of diddly-squeak school of soloing, Johnny A. draws on a more classic pantheon of American fret deity for inspiration, including Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, James Burton, Nokie Edwards, and Wes Montgomery. And like the late Danny Gatton (whom the musician's fiery solos recall), Johnny's years as a sideman have taught him the importance of space and dynamics. The smoky, moody title track sets the tone. While his choice of covers (the Beatles' "Yes It Is," Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman," and the Ventures' signature "Walk, Don't Run") underscore his restraint, the guitarist proves his overdrive can burn with the best of them on "Two Wheel Horse," "In the Wind," and the rockabilly kicker "Up in the Attic." --Jerry McCulley

Buy This CD.......2006-11-10
If you love to dance, if you love guitar, if you love witnessing (in this case audibly) a master craftsman practicing his craft then you need to own this music.
Johnny A, by his own admission, has had a long and tortuous love affair with his guitar; and like any long-term affair where each partner begins to assume characteristics and traits of the other, Johnny A has melded himself with his guitar to the extent that it has become an extension of his body, his soul, his mind. He has become one with his music. This man can flat out play guitar.
I can't listen to this CD without dancing...I have to move, it's that evocative. And it is sooooooo smooth and sweet, like ear candy or soul candy. Definitely my favorite CD, still, after a year and a half. If you love good guitar and if you love to move and be moved, this CD is just what you need.
"holy Chet Atkins Batman!".......2006-07-05
I do not know if people that do not play the guitar understand the value and meaning of tone; but most guitar players lack that one rare ability to achieve the perfect meld of guitar and melody through the right set up WITH originality and verve. Johnny A has been around for along time performing other artists songs, but wow!, he should not have spent so many years as a sideman. This CD will grab you from the first cut with haunting chord progression with that unique custom hollow body sound. You will be hooked right then and there. This CD will take you on a ride of classics,rock-a-billy,swing, blues and downright DIRTY rock and roll, Texas style. This is a must, buy it, give it, and you will never tire of it. If you do not love this CD, then give your stereo away and buy some books....You guitar players, listen and learn how the tone of your guitar and the phrasing you use can be magical..
Although He's a Relative Unknown, Johnny A's Album Has A Stellar Quality About It.......2006-01-08
Sometimes it's fun to be a fan of an obscure artist, but in this case there is absolutely no joy in it. Both of Johnny A's albums should be far more popular than they are.
I like to say that there are really only two kinds of music---Good music and BAD music. Johnny A's music is so damn good, it's truly a crime that more people don't know about it. Just listen to some of the horible dreck that gets played 24-7 on our American airwaves. No wonder we're in such sad shape!
Johnny A's music appeals to a wide variety of people. I've given at least ten of his albums to friends and every one of them has thanked me profusely.
Too many people are missing out on a delicious, sweetly smokin' guitar instrumental album that can be listened to repeatedly without a hint of boredom.
My good friend Kirk from Malibu turned me onto J.A. about two years ago---he truly gave me a gift that I will treasure for the rest of my life. It's really THAT good!
Fresh Sound Cool Vibe.......2005-08-16
Johnny A. has a cool style. Whatever song he plays he makes it his own. This gives his CD a very cool unified vibe with an edge which is uniquely Johnny A. Goofy photo in the CD liner, though.
Keep an eye on this man!.......2005-07-27
Johnny A is truly a rising star. I saw him live "by accident" and was very happy that I was introduced to his music. He is still relatively unknown, unfortunately. He seems to be quite popular in Boston, where he is originally from, but even here in NJ, I haven't heard his music played on the radio yet. He deserves more than this. There is way too much crappy music around that's polluting our radios which almost makes it a crime not to give this guy the sort of fame he deserves for his work. The fact that you have over 40 reviews of his CD and most of them give 5 stars certainly says something for how solid, original, creative, and high-quality his music is. Truly a work of art. He stands right up there with many guitar greats like SRV, BB King, Albert King, Eric Clapton, and others. However, in contrast to these guys, Johnny's CDs are all instrumentals, and the fact that he is able to capture the sort of attention and admiration that he does with guitar instumental work is both noteworthy and testament to his talent and creativity as both a songwriter and a guitar player. His style is extremely diverse, and I was amazed at how many different tones of sounds he was able to extract from one custom-made Johnny A signature Gibson guitar. I mean, wow. After listening to this CD and his other new CD, try to see him live, and you will not be sorry. Johnny is simply a gem, and I really hope his career flourishes to the sort of fame and wide recognition he deserves.

Virtuoso.......2007-05-15
If you own more than three guitars you will love this disc. It hangs out on my iPod with the legends, Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery, Christopher Parkening, Joe Pass, Leo Kottke ...
Magnificent.
In Canada we would call him Johnny Eh? Seriously 2 thumbs up!.......2007-04-04
I was driving to work about a month ago and heard an instrumental version of "Poor Side of Town." I waited till the DJ came on to find out who did this incredible guitar work.
It was Johnny A.
I'm a little late getting into this artist; but I am now hooked. I bought this CD and will now purchase his "Sometime Tuesday Morning" CD next.
He has an amazing sound that reminds me a little of Hank B. Marvin; but he is his own man. Couldn't recommend this CD any higher.
Great jazz guitar player.......2007-01-11
This is a very good CD of excellent jazz guitar with a slight blues tinge. Very good technique and recording.
Organic appeal.......2007-01-03
Johnny A's "Get Inside" has the uncanny ability of growing on one. Everyone I have loaned this to or played it for enjoys it more and more with each listen. I bought it after seeing Johnny A in concert summer of 2006. He is an amazing guitarist and song writer. His covers are unique and tasty, too--he picks unexpected and great tunes. This has been one of the best additions to my music collections ever. I also recommend his previous CD, "Sometime Tuesday Morning".
A musician's musician...clean, diverse, & dazzling!!!.......2006-11-22
Johnny A's blues & jazz tones are simply luscious to the guitar-lover's ear. His complex scales and blazing sweeps are spine-tingling. You know a musician is among rare air when he can compile a mixture of jazz, blues, rock, country, & 50's-sounding riffs into one perfectly structured album. "Get Inside" is a fantastic sophomore effort by Johnny A. & deserves noteworthy attention from the public & other musicians. To see Johnny play live is the true measure of what this guy is made of, though. Most of his gigs are small in nature & very intimate. He is almost always available to talk to either before or after a show (or both). I would very much like to see Joe Satriani & Steve Vai throw an invitation Johnny's way for a future G3 tour. There's a large audience out there waiting to see an amazing guitar player who has been under the radar for years. But this album!!!

Customer Reviews:
Beware - this is NOT the right version!.......2007-07-07
This is a fantastic CD and all, but as of July '07, what they're shipping is not the "10 Years After" (Dix Ans Apres) version, which includes a bonus disc and has all 33 pieces listed on this page. I got a single 16-song disc, the same one I bought 3 or 4 years ago. Buyer beware.
Disc one is great....disc two doesn't exist...beware.......2007-07-05
I have the original 16-track version of this recording and couldn't agree more with the glowing comments left by others. However, this listing is somewhat misleading as the reviews mention that it is a newer release with a bonus disc containing 17 extra tracks. Since other reviews and the Alia Vox website itself mention that such a thing exists, I went ahead and ordered it, only to receive the same single disc version I already had. Amazon tells me the double one isn't available, so beware.
It's still great music though.
Hauntingly Beautiful.......2006-06-11
I was introduced to this utterly, utterly gorgeous soundtrack via a "friend of a friend", to whom I am eternally grateful. I listened to this on cassette tape too many times to count. The music is hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric, dark and moody, tragic and deep. This is music from the Baroque period but nothing like Bach, or Purcell, or Handel.
Vive Savall and M. Sainte Colombe .......2006-04-27
I saw the film and was enthralled by the portrayals of Sainte Colombe and Marin Marais. (Depardu was superb as always.) Some reviewers thought the film dull or tedious. I suppose in today's film culture where there is so much action without much substance there are those who would concur. I thought is was an excellent study of the characters and the music, which is rarity even in films about musicians.
French Baroque Performed by The Absolute Master of the Viola Da Gamba.......2005-10-09
In addition to French Baroque being generally and wrongly relegated to secondary status compared to Italian or German Baroque, there are probably less than 200 professional players who specialize in the viola da gamba as an instrument which was used mostly by French Baroque composers. Out of those few 200 performers, Jordi Savall is the undisputed master of his craft not only in performing French Baroque but really any Baroque piece for the viola da gamba. This soundtrack is a fine example on the diversity and depth of not only the viola's range but on works of various composers during the French Baroque period: especially the works of Marais and Sainte-Colombe. This album is also a great sample of the simply exemplary talent of Jordi Savall as a violist.
The double album primarily contains solos or duets for viola da gamba by Marais and Sainte-Colombe but has pieces by other contemporaries such as Lully. This album is a great sample of the variety of works and composers of the unique French Baroque tradition that continued to use the viola while other musical styles in Europe had virtually abandoned it for the cello. The viola da gamba has a lot more range, depth, and resonance than the cello and so the music is moodier and more contemplative than cello works such as Bach's magnificent cello suites. Solo music for viola from the French Baroque also allows freer interpretation than conventional compositions for orchestra or other chamber pieces. The jewel in this album is Marais' haunting but divine Sonnerie de Ste-Genevieve in which the dynamics of the violas and violins are truly a spiritual voyage into one's soul; at points serenely docile to demonically ferocious as if phantasms both luring and forbidding the listener to follow. The intricate complexity and resonance of this exquisite piece makes it one of the most spiritually moving Baroque sonet variations I have ever heard and it's one of my personal favorites. Both Marais and Sainte-Colombe were probably the pinnacle of achievement in terms of expressive techniques for the viola da gamba during the French Baroque period while later contemporaries such as Forqueray and Couperin became more formulaic although no less accomplished.
Jordi Savall has many priceless performances apart from this soundtrack and he is really the only competent artist for both viola da gamba specifically and primarily all French Baroque interpretations. There are no other viola players who can even compare to Savall as they really sound as little else than amateurs in comparison to his applied skills and passion of playing. I strongly recommend for anyone looking for music for viola da gamba or really any French Baroque to buy Savall/Le Concert Des Nations' performances exclusively as there's simply nothing else to look for or find that's in his caliber. Apart from a few other performnances by groups such as Les Arts Florissants, I guarantee you that the performances of all others in this style will rise to no further than being mediocre at best such as Harncourt or even Koopman who often plays with Savall. Most other viola performers quickly descend to atrocious standards in comparison to those of Savall. Even though Savall's recordings tend to be on the more expensive side, he's worth every penny take my word for it: you won't regret it! What you will regret is having bought a mediocre viola peformance after you hear Savall's as the differences will be very significant.

Texas guitar prodigy Eric Johnson returns to recording after a near-decade absence with a lush, typically restrained collection that eschews flash for fluid cool. Arranging the album's 16 songs into a musical triptych whose sections are labeled "Prelude," "Courante" and "Allemande," Johnson aims at creating a landscape of shifting moods that's as subtle as it is mature. The guitarist's trademark lyrical style is immediately showcased on the title track, "Summer Jam" and the stately fallen astronaut tribute, "Columbia." The first section is also energized by the funked-up "Good to Me," before Johnson turns to fare that's variously more impressionistic (the instrumental "Sea Secret"), conscience-driven (the pop-savvy ballad "Sad Legacy") and smooth-groove, r&b sultry ("From My Heart"). The infectious finger-pickin' "Tribute to Jerry Reed" segues into a final act that includes the romance of "Your Sweet Eyes" (with guest Shawn Colvin adding her distinctive harmonies), "Hesistant"'s tasteful Wes Montgomery-isms and the 70's charged, acid-jazz of "Magnetized." His fusion-lite cover of Dylan's "My Back Pages" and saccharine "Sunnaround You" withstanding, it's another fine tribute to Johnson's tasteful, often introspective muse. -- Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Another great CD from a brilliant guitarist.......2006-10-25
This is an impressive effort. This CD has been played fairly constantly in my car for the past 3 weeks. What impresses me is that I consistently find new bits that stand out depending on my mood. There are some great grooves, brilliant fills, and rocking riffs in classic Eric Johnson style in the first movement, 'Prelude'. The opener 'Bloom' and 'Good To Me' are probably the highlights there. Mr. Johnson then turns it down a bit during 'Courante', the second movement.
'Sad Legacy' and 'From My Heart' are both great introspective songs. 'Sad Legacy' builds a sense of urgency and 'From My Heart' has a mellower, R&B feel and nice jazzy runs. These two are probably my favorites off the album.
The last movement, 'Allemande' starts off with a nice old-school style jazzy number, 'Hesistant'. 'Magnetized' gets things rocking again, before a very good atmospheric classical guitar piece, 'Ciel' ends the ride.
Eric plays an wide variety of styles on this release and manages to keep it all together as one cohesive piece, with one small exception. Tribute to Jerry Reed, while a nice bit of picking doesn't fit on this CD for me, especially after the sitar on 'Cruise The Nile'.
I'd recommend this CD to anyone who enjoyed Ah Via Musicom or Venus Isle. Or, if you aren't familiar with Eric johnson already, then do yourself a favor and pick up a CD. This one is as good as any of his studio albums to start off with.
hard to review.......2006-08-12
I can see why some are disappointed with 'Bloom' since a few songs aren't so fresh. Still, this CD is amazing if you make a copy of a "Best of Bloom" (Of the first six fast songs, I usually only listen to Bloom and the cooler than cool Good to Me.)
For me, this would be:
1. Bloom
4. Good to Me
7. Sea Secret
8. Sad Legacy
10. Cruise the Nile
12. Your Sweet Eyes
9. From My Heart
Not to knock the other songs, but this is the 27 minute CD I like. Perfect in the summer. I feel sorry for people who don't hear Bloom.
Getting weaker with age...EJ needs to practice.......2006-07-19
Seriously friends...I was watching a youthful EJ on the ACL DVD and he just blew my mind, lick after lick but let's be real...Bloom is a repeat of the same old thing except not as good as it used to be.
EJ, take it from one of your biggest fans who owns all of your music...if you come out with another album, don't use samples because you think that they will help you modernize the music or "relate" to the kids. Go into the woodshed and seriously, build a chair. You need to practice and learn something new if you're going to do something original ever again. Otherwise, each and every album that you put out is going to sound the same as old ones...like this one does.
Still, much respect. You are a great master of the instrument but, PRACTICE!
a musical garden.......2006-07-10
This was the first cd of its type I have brought into my audio library, but it was a good introduction. I've known about Eric Johnson for most of his career and always was fond of his sound, but just never got around to adding any of his stuff to my collection. Then I went to a joint Joe Satriani/Eric Johnson evening, and the next day there were 3 new cds in my collection. This, his latest, is a nice presentation of all of his stuff, from chicken-pickin' (the excellent "Tribute to Jerry Reed") to smooth, cool jazz ("Hesitant" ; "Ciel"), to working his pleasant tenor in one of his forays into lyricism (the also pleasant "Sad Legacy" and "Your Sweet Eyes"). My main fault with Johnson's music is I can hardly ever understand what he's singing, but his voice is so agreeable and his tunes so listenable that i'm willing to overlook it. This is a solid body of work, full of clean lilting notes and stinging riffs. A good inclusion in the library of any guitar aficianado.
Eric Johnson Delivers.......2006-07-09
Bloom is definitely one of Eric Johnson's strongest efforts. Almost every song on the album is a winner. The couple that aren't are still really enjoyable.
What I love about EJ is that first he is always very diverse with his songs. They have a wide range of feel and texture that very few musicians have.
Secondly his guitar playing is amazing. His guitar's tone is perfect for each song. Be it the signature EJ sound in Columbia, the definite twang in Tribute to Jerry Reed, the Eastern feel in Cruise the Nile or the stirring chimes in Your Sweet Eyes. And he is able to make the guitar pieces important, yet never overbearing.
This is definitely an album that gets maximum play on my iPod...

5 Stars Discounting Recording Problems.......2007-05-14
The content is terrific. This CD is one of a series of classical music masters. The only problem is that tracks 38 and later have a lot of distortion/static. I returned thinking it was a problem with the disc, but the replacement disc had the same problem. If not for that, I would have rated 5 stars.
Perfect for homeschooling........2007-01-29
The narratives are short enough to keep your children's attention, the music may be short in some instances but if you're playing it in the background for exposure- it doesn't matter. The price is great and the cheapest you'll find in addition to the 4 for 3 deal. We have all 18 of these cds and don't regret it!
In Words & Music.......2000-07-24
I have found this recording series to be a very helpful introductory teaching device for my young children. It gives a brief history of the composer and samples of the musical style.
Don't blink.......2000-05-03
The music on this CD is all wonderful, and it's a perfect CD toget - if you have the attention span of a soap bubble! Thisis a "sampler" with narrative and very few of thepieces listed are actually played in their entirety. Even pieces which are short to begin with are excerpted. We are given a whole minute of the Hallelujah Chorus and a rousing 45 seconds from the overture from "Ezio". This is a teaching CD which gives some fine examples to support the narration - but they are very short examples. A few bars here and there is all you get.

I would buy it just to hear the opening and closing of "Truth". If you don't believe me give the first 2 minute of that track a listen.

Yes, this album is as good as you think it would be (Petrucci and Rudess are the best in the business). Buy it!
A Hidden Gem... in spots........2007-03-08
Complaints: 1. a good bit of this is a bit more moody or slow than I was hoping for from these two... (not that, when the is right, those particular songs don't sound great). 2. As others have noted, Petrucci's monstrous technique on electric guitar doesn't translate seamlessly to acoustic: he's far better than most, but not "perfect" the way he usually is on electric.
Compliments: 1. Petrucci on "Bite of the Mosquito" is just plain a jaw-on-the-floor extravaganza of speed/alternate picking in vein of Flight of the Bumblebee... when you see the title and ponder the possibilities, you might wonder what Petrucci is capable of... and even with expectations very high, he still proceeds to blow you away. I can't believe nobody has singled this song out yet. Sure, it's "just shredding," but if you play guitar, then give it a listen, and then find the tab, and then add it to your practice regimen: the ultimate exercise in speed/alternate pciking AND it sounds great, unlike your usual chromatic practice runs. 2. "In the Moment" and "Black Ice" seem particularly well put together and are kind of what I expected all along.
If you like shred, get it for the last track... and if you like the moodier aspects of DT and get into the music as much as the mastery, you'll like it even more than I did.
Good stuff........2007-02-14
I stumbled upon this disc while surfing the www. Decided to purchase it based on John Petrucci's name, the name of the disc, and because it was a piano and guitar duet. I assumed that the piano player would be halfway decent because he was playing with Petrucci. The cd did not disappoint.
