About the Artist
Overall Grand Prize Winner in the USA Songwriting Contest in 1997, Lisa McCormick’s work has aired on nationally syndicated radio programs "World Café" (WXPN, Philadelphia), "Acoustic Café" (Ann Arbor, MI), and National Public Radio, as well as stations around the U.S. and the world.

Her debut CD, "Right Now", produced in 1996 by veteran folk/rocker Jonathan Edwards, earned the titles "Artist of the Year" and "Record of the Year" by Maine Public Radio. "Right Now" went on to receive preliminary nominations for "Song of the Year", "Pop Female Vocal Performance", and "Pop Album of the Year" for the 40th annual Grammy Awards.

A second CD, a solo acoustic EP entitled "Seven Solos" was released on McCormick’s own Ruthie’s Noise label in 1998. McCormick’s third CD, "Sacred", produced by Paul Antonell and John Platania, was released on the Ruthie’s Noise label in 1999.

In 1997, Lisa took the Grand Prize in the MIXX Magazine Indie Band Contest, joined on stage by bassist Graham Maby (Joe Jackson, They Might Be Giants). In 1995, McCormick was selected to showcase at the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Songwriter Showcase, sponsored by the National Academy of Popular Music. Other honors include a Fellowship Award in Music from the Vermont State Arts Council, recognition in the Billboard Magazine Songwriter’s Contest, and a 1999 nomination from Vermont Senator James Jeffords to be the one performing artist to represent her state on the Millennium Stage at Washington D.C.’s venerable Kennedy Center.

McCormick’s single "Gravitate" was chosen by Performing Songwriter magazine for their "Best of the Year" CD, and also appeared in the soundtrack of the Lifetime Channel’s "Beyond Chance" program, hosted by Melissa Etheridge. Boston’s New England Performer Magazine describes McCormick as "…an absolute genius. She is funny, sexy, smart, literate, sardonic, witty, and sings with all the power of a rock diva."

In addition to her own performances, McCormick has been invited to open the show for numerous national artists, including Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann, Jonathan Edwards, and Joan Armatrading.

Tragedy of tragedies: Sun Records legend Roy Orbison passed away only a few weeks after issuing this sunny comeback in 1989. Rescued from the oldies also-ran circuit by his membership in the Traveling Wilburys--alongside fellow legends Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and ELO's Jeff Lynne--the Wayfaring One implemented these stellar pals and others on Mystery Girl and even allowed his son to compose some lyrics for him. Wonder of wonders: his angelic tenor rang true on every track and set the stage for what might've been a huge pop-culture renaissance. No need to fret about the "if only"s. One spin through the radio-chummy "You Got It," and the "Pretty Woman" legacy is crystal clear. We're lucky he was able to record it. --Tom Lanham

5 out of 5 stars A Love So Beautiful.......2007-06-13

Today, after happily ordering the Traveling Wilburys' re-release, I became nostalgic about Roy Orbison & George Harrison, two of my all-time favorites. When I looked at comments on Mystery Girl, I was delighted to see that most listeners rate this album 5 stars. But, I noticed that "A Love So Beautiful" is rarely mentioned. Please listen to it again -- it is outstanding. I rate it as one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. This album was a gift for my birthday in 1989, and even after 18 years, I still am awed each time I hear Roy hit that high note in the word "away." If you're undecided as to whether or not to purchase this album, DO! It's wonderul.

5 out of 5 stars A sorrowful end ,but beautiful songwriting/vocals.......2007-03-25

Roy was a west Texan, raised amidst the blowing sand, rattlesnakes, oil rigs, and women eager to break your heart. Like Buddy Holly, it all shines in the timeless music that he made. This CD is as close to perfect as it gets,as far as come-back albums. The production is absolutely great, and while I love all his older stuff, this is in a whole other league. Music by another Good Texan--buy a copy and put it with the SRV and Buddy Holly.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-03-13

Even though this is more than 10 years old and Roy's last LP, it was fresh and fun listening. You can definitely see ELO's influence in several of the songs but still fun music

4 out of 5 stars It's Roy, It's His Last -- What Else Do You Need to Know?.......2006-09-30

Mystery Girl is an inconsistent CD, with a couple of -- for me -- very weak songs, In the Real World and A Love So Beautiful. But while nothing matches his best work on Monument in the late fifties and early sixties, Roy's voice was still fabulous here, showing not a trace of age or doubt as he hits those wonderful high notes. And some of the songs, particularly You Got It, Careless Heart, and the title cut, approach earlier classics like Pretty Woman and Only the Lonely. The Comedians, written by Elvis Costello, is Running Scared with a different denouement. The snare drum even sounds like RS. And Windsurfer reminds me why Roy's music sometimes drew comparisons to opera. Like opera, in this song he takes a centuries old helping of plot corniness -- guy can't get girl, so he dies for her -- and through some lovely music (OK, you don't get drums very often in opera), a chorus for witness, and, especially, his soaring tragic voice makes the cliche both moving and fresh again.

4 out of 5 stars a very enjoyable final work.......2006-09-14

This was a great point in Roy Oribon's career b/c he was resurrected out of obscurity by his inclusion with the "Traveling Wilburys" supergroup.

Back in the later 80's, all of the Traveling Wilburys had albums that came out at around the same time with each other of the friends helping each other out.

If youy like the Traveling Wilburys (and who could not!) then you would have to enjoy this work. I think that Tom Petty, George Harrison and Roy all had their cds produced by former ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. This cd is an extention to Petty's "Full Moon Fever", Harrison's "Cloud Nine" and Lynne's "Armchair Theater".

Of course, the trademark sound of Orbison's yearning vocals, twangy guitar, hook filled choruses and rockabilly themes are still there.

Some highlights of the cd is the often heard "You got it", plus the gems of "Shes a mysrtery to me", "California Blue" and "Dream you". The rest of the songs are great and there is definitely no filler on this final tributory album.

There are a lot of collaborations/assistance from other noted artists but, unlike the Santana nonsense ( I hate it and see it as a corporate raid into otherwise sacred rock music), the help is very subtle thereby preserving this as a true Orbison work.

This cd has the essense of a true classic and should always remain timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Roy's swan song is a winner.......2007-07-07

The great Roy Orbison was on the brink of a MAJOR comeback when he was taken from us, much too early. God decided he wanted the angel in black by his side. Released posthumously, the "Mystery Girl" album lived up to the promise that this great artist would show us much more. The CD opens with the hit "You Got It", which was a breath of fresh air on the airwaves at the time. The lyrics to the next track, "In the Real World", turned out to be so prophetic, if this song doesn't move you, you're made of stone. "(All I Can Do Is) Dream You" is a slice of rockabilly harkening back to Roy's mid-50s roots, punchy and raucous. "A Love So Beautiful" tells of a love gone wrong, one of the subjects Roy sang of with authority. "California Blue" is an ode to the home he was spending an increasing amount of time away from, the song soaring and satisfying. The "title" track, "She's a Mystery to Me", tells of a love not quite as sunny as one might want, but nonetheless accepts on its own terms. "The Comedians" is so close in form and subject to "Running Scared", but ends differently than that classic, in performance just as satisfying. Of the last three songs, only "Windsurfer" stands as a "throwaway", but to my ears, it still satisfies with Roy's soaring vocals (how to describe his voice without using the word soaring??)and some sprightly guitar. "The Only One" tells of a breakup, and Roy was the expert on breakup songs, but on this one, he is looking on, and comes across with some sage observations. The CD ends with "Careless Heart", this time Roy is on the receiving end of a heartache, and of course, delivers hindsight as to why. There was one more CD cobbled together after this, "King of Hearts", but it is only a collection of songs finished in the wake of his untimely death. "Mystery Girl", though only 37 minutes, is one of the most satisfying albums ever made by ANYONE, and certainly hints that Roy had a lot more in him, had he lived. If you can get it on the cheap, more's better, but if you loved Roy, this is a stellar example of his craft, easily sitting in the company of his classic Monument albums of the 60s.

5 out of 5 stars Some old favourites, and some unfamiliar, enjoyable voices and songs.......2007-03-11

This compilation has the usual songs that immediately bring the name of composer Victor Herbert to mind - Ah, sweet mystery of life, I'm falling in love with someone and Tramp, tramp, tramp - with such well known voices as those of Macdonald, Eddy and the famous tenors, Richard Crooks, Richard Tauber and Charles Kullmann.

Perhaps of greater interest to many listeners will be the relatively seldom heard artists, such as John McHugh, Florence Easton and Florence George. All three have very pleasant voices and aural personalities.

It is a somewhat mixed delight to hear Amelita Galli-Curci, John McCormack, Alma Gluck and Richard Werrenrath in recordings from the acoustic era. My personal favourite from that group is Galli-Cutci's charming version of A kiss in the dark.

Altogether, a well chosen mixture of the familiar and the out of the way, carefully and well re-recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

5 out of 5 stars They don't write music like this anymore.......2006-12-31

Who cares if a soprano is singing songs written for a tenor or Thine Alone was written as a duet? This is a perfectly lovely album, and I've never heard my two favorites--Thine Alone, Toyland--sung more beautifully. The soprano, Virginia Croskery, takes no liberties with the music--sings it lovingly and as it was written. Refreshing in our self-indulgent times when singers seem to think it compulsory to "make a song their own" or whatever it is they think they're doing.

5 out of 5 stars an elegant and sensitive treatment of classic favorites!.......2004-01-13

Totally enchanted with this CD. The soprano supremely gifted and the orchestra - stunning. I highly recommend it for the sensitive music lover!

1 out of 5 stars He deserves better.......2000-02-29

This new Victor Herbert is a disaster. The soloist is bad and destroys Romany Life. Her other songs aren't much better. Most of the vocal music was written with a chorus in mind. No chorus. Over half the vocal selections are mutilated. 2/3rds of Kiss Me Again is gone, about 1/2 of Moonbeams cannot be found, the second verse of A Kiss in the Dark is among the missing, etc. Thine Alone was written as a duet. Molly was written for a tenor. They are sung by a soprano. Herbert wrote so much music beautiful music but onl;y his most famous can be found here. Three or four orchestral selections are all that can be recommended. Until John McGlinn or Richard Bonynge realize that Herbert once existed he is in trouble. Naxos and Brion are not the answer.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to recorded Americana.......2000-01-19

It is a Good Thing that Naxos is starting an American Classics series at their usual budget price and that Victor Herbert is featured on two of them. We have as of this writing the purely instrumental (8.559025) and its sequel (8.559026). The latter features soprano Virginia Croskery and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Keith Brion. Yes, this offers an interesting comparison with the old Beverly Sills offering of much the same material. Ms. Croskery's vocalizing is very good indeed and perhaps more in keeping with the kind of voice for which much of this music was composed; but while Ms. Sills' voice is quite thrilling, it is perhaps a touch too operatic for this lightweight material. On the other hand, the Naxos sound is far beyond what the older set can give us. Of the 16 selections on this CD, 5 are instrumental. Of the vocals, not all were written for the soprano voice ("Toyland" for example); but most were and we have here what you would expect: "Romany Life," "Kiss in the Dark," "Italian Street Song," "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," and so on. Some listeners might have some trouble with the singer's very top notes; but at this price and for lack of anything competitive that is still available, this is still a very good purchase. This disc makes a fine companion piece, not only to the other Naxos set, but also to a concert of Herbert and Romberg duets on Newport Classic label titled "Sweethearts."

Album Description

Percy Faith was the master of distilling the best of melodies and in this collection from 1958, Percy rescues us from the images that Victor Herbert melodies tend to evoke - the operetta, and the "erstwhile lady singing (belting out?) Herbert tunes at the piano." With this in mind, Percy's early stereo spectacular brings us the best of the Victor Herbert tunes - with the grand voice of the orchestra to bring out the beauty of each song - twenty-three Victor Herbert songs in this collection! (Bill Halvorsen)

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Inauthentic Herbert/authentic Percy Faith.......2006-09-03

If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."

1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2006-08-14

This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.

5 out of 5 stars "music giants come together ~ Herbert & Faith".......2004-02-09

Now we have something that only Percy Faith could tackle "The Columbia Album of Victor Herbert", composer Victor Herbert has all the elements that Mr. Faith was looking for, and what a workout the award winning Percy Faith Orchestra has in store for them, look at the result...pure satisfaction and then some ~ "TOYLAND" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Percy's arrangement comes from the heart and weaves a magic spell over the listener ~ "MARCH OF THE TOYS", once again the signature arrangement comes to the surface of each cue that Mr. Faith records, very stimulating performance ~ listen to this cue and visualize the toys coming to life ~ "A KISS IN THE DARK" and "KISS ME AGAIN", once again the magic prevails with soft and sweeping strings, The Percy Faith Touch comes to the forefront ~ and Percy was always there to record the music whenever the time presented itself, and it is here and now.

Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.

Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08

Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.

5 out of 5 stars Percy Faith-Columbia Album Of Victor Herbert.......2003-09-18

This is one of Percy Faith's most beautiful albums and it is finally on cd.Most of this album is beautiful and lush but there is a few songs that are brassy,2 Christmas songs and 1 Semi classical song. Here is the song list.

2)Spanish Life-Brassy
3)Dream Girl-Lush
4)Because Your You're You-Lush
5)Toyland-Lush Christmas This is the most beautiful version of toyland I have ever heard although Johnny Mathis has a pretty good version too.You should play Percy's version during the Christmas season off of this cd.
6)March Of The Toys-Brassy Christmas with Drums interspursed.Percy's version of this song is great and should also get a lot of play during the holiday season.

All 23 Songs are just with orchestra and no chrous. Also the two Christmas Songs on this album are not available on his other 3 Christmas albums only here. You may also like Percy Faith's Columbia Album of George Gershwin if it's still available,if it's not Collectibles will probebly be reissiuing it eventually. If you like beautiful music this album must be in your collection.Doubtless a lot of these songs probebly got played on beautiful music stations before beautiful music died out on the radio.
