4 out of 5 stars Great Debut Solo Album from James Labrie.......2005-01-09

Keep it to Yourself is the debut solo album of Mullmuzzler, which is Dream Theater vocalist James Labrie's solo project. Labrie decided put this disc out in 1999 when he was approached by the Magna Carta label executives. Supporting him on the instrumentation (and songwriting) were Shadow Gallery and Magellan members as well as many others. Don't be fouled by the "solo album" tag since there is plenty of room for each musician to display their skilled musicianship and add their creative input in the songs.

Labrie's biggest songwriting partner is without doubt Dali's Dilemma keyboardist Matt Guillory (who plays even a bigger role on the second Mullmuzzler disc). Guillory is an extremely accomplished musician; not only does he play his instrument perfectly, but he is also a terrific composer who brings each song a new dimension. Feel free to check out the debut Zero Hour record if you want to hear him cut loose and shred his heart out. Guillory co-wrote three songs on Keep it to Yourself, namely the first two songs "His Voice" and "Statued", plus the experimental "Lace". The first two tracks are easily my favourite numbers on this disc, and I believe it's because of the undeniable Guillory influence. Both songs are relatively heavier and more dynamic than the others and filled with meticulous orchestration, sparse piano and keyboard work with calculated bass by Bryan Beller and excellent guitar runs by Mike Keneally (Zappa, Vai, Beer for Dolphins). James Labrie's vocals on this album are significantly different than his stuff with Dream Theater. This is understandable, since Mullmuzzler gives him the chance to do things he can't do in DT and experiment with new musical ideas. "Statued" picks up where "His Voice" leaves off and delves into a thunderous drum attack by one of the world's greatest drummers, Mike Mangini (Extreme, Steve Vai, Annihilator), and showcases more liberate bass lines from guitarist Mike Keneally's bandmate. The song has several stop-and-start sections with mood and tempo shifts. I really enjoy the sense of contrast exhibited in this tune.

Each song has something different to offer. "Shores of Avalon" may be one of the more accessible tracks. It begins with nice Egyptian riffing and gives way to a beautifully composed, warm guitar solo played by Mike Keneally. No wonder why Frank Zappa called him "his best student ever". Check this guy's solo albums out as well. It's not just chops like Steve Vai; this guy writes MUSIC. Needless to say, this being a solo effort, there is a strong emphasis on vocal arrangements, and since it's Terry Brown of Rush and Fates Warning fame who handles the crisp production here, lots of subtleties shine through. Besides "Shores of Avalon", "Guardian Angel", "Sacrifice", and "Slow Burn" were also co-written by Shadow Gallery members. Their input is easily recognisable, especially Carl-Cadden James'. Give a listen to the mathematic guitar run on "Guardian Angel" (sounds like Gary Wehrkamp loves that) or the dense acoustics on the ballads "Sacrifice" and "Slow Burn", the latter which features a poignant guitar solo.

"Beelzebubba" is the strangest (but also one of the most progressive) songs on the record. It eerily reminds me of Devin Townsend's "Bad Devil" on his Infinity record. The song portrays all aspects of jazz, prog rock and post-pop without getting too serious. Lyrically it's a satire on Clinton and his 'affair' at the White House. Like I said, the chorus sounds like Devin Townsend, which I like, since Devin is a godly musician as well. Not all songs are fun though; actually it's just "Beelzebubba" that has a joky tone to it. The song "His Voice", for example, is about finding out that a close friend was in need of help, yet, unfortunately being unable to notice that. I read somewhere that Labrie actually wrote it for a friend of his who committed suicide. Trent Gardner from Magellan lends his talents to the two most bizarre compositions on the album, one of them being "Beelzebubba" and the other one being the longest song "As a Man Thinks". Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of that one, as it seems a bit odd in structure, except its closing with that static keyboard work by Guillory. I also have to mention Matt Guillory's somewhat unexpected intro on "Lace" where he dabbles with electronic elements. In short, Keep it to Yourself expands upon creative songwriting and a plethora of interesting instruments including trumpet, saxophone, trombone and horn. Since most of the album was written via exchanging ideas through emails, long-distance phone calls, etc., this was merely a taste of what's to come. Labrie explored with deeper ideas on the second Mullmuzzler CD, which is also highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Do not Keep it to Yourself!!!.......2004-02-10

Man, talk about a great CD! I wasn't really sure what to expect when buying this CD, other than LaBrie's voice. This CD is in my regular rotation.

The CD opens guns blazing, a fiery synth riff that gives way to a more subtle, subdued lyrical exchange. The power from the beginning interweaves itself throughout the first track. Great synths, driving drums, and amazing guitar work. The whole ensemble is stapled together by LaBrie's unique voice. A lot of layering is done. LaBrie harmonizes himself many times on this CD.

Dream Theater is what this CD purchase stemmed from. Expect the same power in the music... fast and technical. Perhaps not as intricate as Dream Theater, but the dynamic changes are really nice. A lot of changing back and forth from driving lines to a more mellow, then building back to the drive.

Lots of great bass work on this CD. Overall, good music, held together by a good singer. EXCELLENT work by LaBrie. One of my favorite CDs!

5 out of 5 stars A great album from a virtuosic singer and band.......2002-11-04

...First of all, this band is not supposed to sound like Dream Theater, and if you really listen to it, you will find that it does not. The various instrumentalists offer very different playing styles from the members of DT, especially the drummer, Mike Mangini, who played with Extreme, a band radically different from DT. Mike Kineally is a phenomenal guitar player, just ask a medium to ask Frank Zappa (Kineally was in his band). The only common thread is James LaBrie, who (miracle of miracles!) IS the singer for Dream Theater! Secondly, the album was not an effort to sound like Dream Theater or be compared to DT in any way. On the contrary, James L. was attempting to do something different, apart from DT. I think he succeeded very well. This album is full of exciting and beautiful music.
"Beelzebubba" has to be one of the most unique and quirky songs out there today, it is fantastic. "Guardian Angel" has a great groove, and "As A Man Thinks" has some great moments, with some nice harmonies from James. If you can get it through your skull that this is not supposed to be DT, you will find this to be a wonderful album.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but no Dream Theater..........2001-07-10

Don't get me wrong, James Labrie writes a great song. Maybe he was lost in the over indulging likes of Dream Theater and he felt the need to really do his own thing. Trouble is, much of this disc sounds like DT. While there are some sweet lullibies in "Sacrifice" and "Slow Burn", the other songs have that rocking progressive attitude we've come to know & love with LaBrie's tenure with DT. The first 3 songs ("His Voice", "Statued", and "Shores of Avalon") fire out of the shoot with a hard & crunchy feel. The middle of the disc slows down a bit and then it ends with the least inspired & noisy untitled cut labeled "As A Man Thinks". Overall a very good effort by LaBrie & Co, and it does rival those early songs of a young DT. But if you listen to the supporting Mullmuzzler cast, you'll realize that their musicianship, tho very competent, can't compete with DT's peerless Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung & Rudess.

5 out of 5 stars Great vocals, lots of diversity........2001-03-18

James LaBrie's excellent solo project shows that he's more than just a phenomenally talented singer, but he's a solid songwriter as well. With Dream Theater, LaBrie's songwriting is rather undervalued among his virtuoso peers, but here you really see what he's made of.

LaBrie sounds excellent, visceral and strong and confident, far better than Dream Theater's Falling Into Infinity, which was released not-so-long before this. His emotional expression is also impeccable, which is one of the reasons I love Dream Theater so much. Nowhere is this more evident than on the nondescript ballads. Mullmuzzler's trips into the tunnel of love may have been awfully banal had the vocals not brought them up a few notches.

The impassioned opener "His Voice" shows the album's principal feel: melodic metal/rock with a progressive leaning. There's some great quirky moments, like the Zappa-esque "Beelzebubba," with its use of brass, and the audacious "As a Man Thinks," which features melody shifts aplenty, bombastic vocals, and thoughtful lyrics. The sentimental rocker "Guardian Angel" and the mini-epic "Shores of Avalon" are also highlights. Each song offers something different thanks to considerable variety and tight musicianship. Overall, a great disc for James LaBrie fans.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04

I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

        5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

        4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.
