"These tunes have a deceptive simplicity; they both mirror and magnify..."
Del Suggs
"Listening to John's music is like peeling an onion: each layer reveals a new fresh image..."

Review by Dee Andrews Bartell (sister of John Blue).......2002-06-27
My review may be a little on the personal side since John Blue is my brother. Some people may know that we lost John Blue on Janurary 26, 2002. John has been playing and writing music since he was a teenager. Our family has been honored with his music for many years. When he passed away we found songs that he had written on all kinds of paper through the entire house. I have been fortunate to have private concerts here in my home with the niece's and nephew's sitting on his knee or sitting behind him with their arms around his neck. We love him very much. His songs touch every one. John had a big heart and he had many experiences in life...experiences that that people may find that they have been through also. That is what makes his music so wonderful. Most of it is living life which can be tough. John has written many songs that were not on this CD. We are in the process of getting some of these songs together and possibly trying to make another CD to celebrate John's life.
Of course all of his songs are my favorite but if I had to select one song from this CD it would be "I Loved You With My Song". This song was primarily written for his family when he was having heart problems and the doctors had called me and said they did not think John was going to live. Well, another miracle in John's life. He lived but they did not think he would be here for more than six months.
When he releases this CD the remarks he made when he introduced the song were "I did not think I was going to live so I thought I needed to write something". It means so much to me because I know that the way he expressed his love was through his music. Even though John had only been fortunate enough to release the one CD I think his music is some of the best.
I love you John Blue and I am so thankful that I have this music to play over and over again and to pass on to others that will come in our lineage throughout the years. I am also thankful for the tapes that we have of Blue singing his songs for us that will always be stored in our hearts. We are fornutate not just to hear him but to see him which lifts up my heart.
I wish you all had had the oppurtunity to meet Blue in person. He was a special person and it definitely is revealed in his music.
Blessings to you all and thank you for your wonderful comments regarding my brother and my best friend "John Blue". Their will never be anyone quite like him.
The Deep and Meaningful Sound of this Artist go Beyond words.......2000-10-29
INCREDIBLE MUSIC; I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS CD WAS NOMINATED AND RECEIVED TOP RATINGS IN THE 2000 GRAMMY AWARDS INCLUDING ONE OF THE TOP NEW ALBUMS, TOP VOCALIST AND TOP NEW FOLK ARTIST THIS ARTIST IS ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDS TO COME ALONG IN A LONG TIME. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF MORE CD'S HAVE COME OUT SINCE PIRATE'S SON: MY CD OF PIRATE'S SON IS ALMOST WORN OUT I'VE PLAYED IT SO MUCH. I WILL BE BUYING ANOTHER ONE SOON. JOHN BLUE'S MUSIC IS NOTHING SHORT OF "AWESOME".......... HAL GRANGE
Refreshing ballad variety.......2000-06-30
It seems that most songs on ballad CD's sound the same. Not so with "Pirates Son." Each is a separate story with a variety of accompaniment. As a cruising sailor, "Sail Away" has become the most often played track...sounds like my life. I think any listener will find themselves in one or two of the cuts. Great music for any occassion.

Unmatched musicality!.......2004-02-16
I grew up listening to this album long before the age of the CD, and I'm delighted to see it is now available through that more durable medium. This album from the late fifties was recorded early in the long history of the Deller Consort--an extraordinary ensemble of bass, baritone, tenor, counter tenor (Alfred Deller himself), and two sopranos. Every one of these soloists is an outstanding musician in his/her own right, and together they create music that is virtually unmatched. They are, of course, aided by Ralph Vaughan Williams' gorgeous settings of traditional British folk songs. In addition to the many a cappella choral renditions, this album also includes a number of solos for counter tenor and lute, which are beautifully performed by Deller.
