In the wake of his Sixth Sense triumph, young director M. Night Shyamalan shrewdly marketed himself as a marquee draw, a thriller auteur in the vein of Hitchcock and DePalma. In the process he's also run headlong into one of Hollywood's truest adages: There's no such thing as a sure thing. But while his tale of an isolated hamlet ringed by mysterious, threatening 'others' met with tepid reviews and disappointing box office, it also underscored another filmmaking truism: So-so films can still be blessed with magnificent musical scores. This hauntingly beautiful, yet thoroughly contemporary orchestral soundtrack by James Newton-Howard distinguishes itself at every turn, becoming a clear standout in the ongoing collaboration between the composer and Shyamalan. While similar fusions of minimalist and post-modern musical influences can sometimes seem not much more than hollow intellectual exercises, Newton-Howard inhabits his hypnotic arpeggios and droning rhythms here with an evocative undercurrent of the mysterious and mystical. The composer leans heavily on solo violin to conjure a mock folk tradition of indistinct origins, wedding it to a contemporary classical sense that's as seamless as it is distinguished. -- Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Excellent Score -- Very Unique.......2007-02-22
It was with this score that he really caught my attention. The central theme of the film is a love story, and the characters just happen to be caught up in a nightmarish scenario. The score reflects this perfectly; some of the pieces are classically romantic, quiet pieces, while others are thunderous and frightening to reflect the danger and terror portrayed in the film.
James Newton Howard's later works, like "King Kong" (2005) and his co-score with Hans Zimmer on "Batman Begins" (2005) continued to show that he is rightly considered one of Hollywood's A-list composers for big films.
One of the few good things about this wretched film.......2006-11-05
The score elevates the film.......2006-08-09
While there are a couple pieces in the score that are a little more high-octane in terms of suspense, most of the music is very low-key. Still suspenseful, even spooky at times, but in a very understated and thoughtful way. In some ways similar to Howard's score for 'Signs', which also used repeated rhythms and themes throughout in different ways, the music for 'The Village' differs from the standard "scary movie" score by having pieces which establish a real emotional depth and presence. 'The Village' is a film about love and loss, and much of the music expresses those themes perfectly.
A big part of how the music gets to the depths of emotion is the solo violin performances of Hilary Hahn, present to some extent in almost every piece. From the opening strains of "Noah Visits," the first piece on the CD, her violin speaks the language of the heart and draws the listener into a beautiful world of haunting music, inescapable and compelling. I am amazed by her versatility here. From the fast rhythmic notes of "The Gravel Road" to the high strains of "I Cannot See His Color" to the final, bittersweet tones of "The Vote," Hahn's violin creates a steady thread through the whole score, unifying it and making it unique at the same time. I've listened to several of Hahn's classical performances as well, but I have to say that of what I've heard, her performance for 'The Village' may be her most unique and most compelling yet.
The combination of James Newton Howard's compositions and Hilary Hahn's lush performance have created some beautiful music for 'The Village'. Whether you love the movie or hate it, or even if you're just looking for some rich orchestral music with a beautiful violin performance, this score is well worth owning and listening to many times over.
Good Soundtrack!.......2006-08-03
Nice...but a little overrated,.......2006-06-08
I have mixed feelings--the music is definitely very pretty, very soothing (or agressive when needed), but I never really felt like I was listening to anything but just 'another' score here. There really isn't anything especially beautiful or stand-out, and I have heard orchestral scores from independent films (see 2002's "Stranded", a low-budget sci-fi film made for only about four million clams that boasts one of the most gorgeous scores you will ever hear)that are more memorable and evocative.
This, I hate to say it, just kinda felt "blah" to me.
Not bad.
Just...kinda..."Blah".

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.Customer Reviews:
Touching.......2007-07-04
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.
Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

A unicorn, a rainbow spitting zebra and what looks to be a horse sprouting a third eye are engaged in group sex on the illustrated cover of CocoRosie's second album. If that leads you to expect something playful and magical but also starkly screwed-up from the recording inside, you are on the right path. With assistance from Antony and Devendra, Ark is easily one of the most rewarding releases of 2005. The core of the music is made by singers/multi-instrumentalists Sierra and Bianca Cassidy, formerly estranged sisters who bonded over music and made their magical debut in a Paris flat. Their music has a lunatic music box feel that ought to appeal to fans of Bjork and Joanna Newsom, while the lyrics mine transgressive territory more often found in a book by JT LeRoy than a pop song. The true stars of the album are the singers' lovely, ethereal voices, which refract a '30s jazz-blues idiom through a strangely deadened, forever-sad delivery. It's the vocal equivalent of the toymaker's creations from Blade Runner and it is simply beautiful! -Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
Since the mysterious and beautiful "La Maison de Mon Reve" surfaced in early 2004, CocoRosie have spent months traveling the world with the likes of Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, Antony And The Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, and Blonde Redhead. Along the way, "Noah's Ark" took shape, where heart-offerings of friends, family, loved ones and lost ones surface gracefully, contributing depth to the narrative journey. "Noah's Ark" is the result of a rootless reality, a drifting consciousness across state lines, date lines, time lines...connected to the past, vague about the future. But the heart of these songs is always issued from a tender present.Customer Reviews:

just too weird really.......2006-04-21
Then there is acquired taste (see: Stina Nordenstam).
And then there is quirky but endearing (see: Joanna Newsom).
And after all that we hit Coco Rosie who are weird, quirky and an acquired taste but, if we are being brutally honest, there is not enough of the listenable and endearing about their music to make you tolerate the oddities.
For some this will be a delight and they will rave about the album till the cows come home. But most should be warned, this is eclectic in the extreme and simply does not have enough good tunes to make it a worthwhile listen.
A shame, really.

Parents have to admit: the brains of the folks behind Baby Einstein seem awfully big when it comes to scheming up additions to their charming series. Baby Noah, the latest, leads crib-bound musical explorers on a journey through a classical landscape teeming with wildlife. It's an unlikely sounding concept--doubting Thomas moms and dads can't be blamed for wondering if this is a forced and flimsy attempt at adhering to a theme, or if an armload of classical pieces with animal overtones actually exists--but it's pulled off with Einstein-ian intelligence and flair. Creatures roam the classical catalog with the frequency of silver-haired tuxedo-wearing conductors, the producers effectively put across, and there's no restrictions on their adaptability. Beethoven's Piano Sonata 15, Op. 28, Fourth Movement, thus becomes "The Elephant, The Giraffe, and The Butterfly"--you can almost hear the beating of wings and the clomping of hooves--and Scarlatti's excellent Sonata in E Major becomes an absolutely aquatic-sounding "Seahorse Water Ballet." As always, the Music Box Orchestra players pad their performances with lullaby gentleness. If snoozability is the name of your game when it comes to music to develop your baby's intelligence by, you'll find no ark more hospitable. --Tammy La Gorce

So we have "The Teddy Bears Picnic," "A Morning in Noah's Ark," "The Two Little Bullfinches," "Turkey in the Straw," and even "Tiger Rag." The Noah's Ark number is replete with animal sounds by a guest expert and links up with an earlier Dorian release called "A Trip to Coney Island: Descriptive Overtures from America's Golden Age" (DOR-80153), which introduced me to a form of musical tone poem very popular around the turn of the century.
This is one of those rare recordings that will appeal to all age levels; and scholars will be delighted to note that "Turkey in the Straw" is actually a Humoresque for Clarinet. Also anyone who has ever seen barnyard chickens in any old Warner Brothers cartoon will have already heard "Chicken Reel." A very definite 5 star Grabbit.

THE Best Album of 2005.......2005-10-25
It is impossible for me to sound like a decent reviewer here... I can't help but gush like an overjoyed child. I am serious when I say that HE IS AMAZING and his songs are beautiful, fun, danceable, and meaningful (check out La Voix De Sages.) He is able to blend reggae with a soulful edge, with classical guitar beats, and hard, rythmic drums with a background gospel that, when I close my eyes, I can only imagine would be the background music I would want if I were traveling in Africa. This is what is amazing: You don't NEED to close your eyes (or shell out any money) for a trip to paradise... whether through the sparkling expanse of blue waters on the coast to the grasslands in the mainland... you are just, simply, beautifully, THERE.
I hope this man is able to have a lifetime of success and happiness on the foundation of his musical career. He deserves it. And it's about time the world had a wakeup call to what great music is.

Pretty Good Album.......2005-11-28
The songs are a little shorter than the originals, but still manage to be pretty good. It's amazing what they've done with just a few classic instruments and no synthesizer. The mood of the songs are a little different from the album, it's not so much "night" music, as it is... classic. You can picture yourself eating in a brightly lit, fancy French cafe with this music in the background, rather than being at a club or on the streets at night.
The only problem is that the music lacks a certain amount of energy, which was present on the original album.
I would still reccomend this CD to anyone who likes classical music and the Killers.
