Still funny, but not as funny.......2007-05-29

The original package of four "2000-yr-old Man" discs is where it's at. They kept it clean, so my kids could enjoy it, too. There's a lot of explicit language on this disc, which is disappointing. Still, it's good enough, and the chemistry is still there between Brooks and Reiner.

These Guys Are Still Funny.......2007-05-07

This album is a useful part of anyone's repertoire if you just want a good laugh provided by two old pros in the comedy business. There's nothing complicated; just good fun.

2000 Year-Old Man in 2000.......2006-08-12

Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner are great. A worthy sequel to their original interview.

The best word I can come up with to describe this album is riotous. Where Brooks and Reiner came up with this concept, I don't know, but Brooks must have a wild imagination to have developed this outrageous character. Just listen to it!

Mel Brooks improvising answers to Carl Reiner's straight interview questions. This one after they'd already done this bit decades ago. Funny stuff. In fact, I've rarely ever played any comedy album more than 1 or 2 times except for the Woody Allen Stand Up Comedy 2 record set material from 1964-1968.

This stuff is funny and I like hearing it again, say once a year on average. Sorta like watching a good movie again. There's hardly any klinkers on this album, maybe none.

I'm just glad they've done several of these albums. The idea is sound and Reiner and Brooks play perfectly off each other. Reiner is just barely not too stuffy enough to be a good straight man to Brooks who just barely is able to keep from totally unraveling. In fact, I think it's Reiner who keeps Brooks reined in and Brooks who keeps Reiner from getting too stiff. Funny stuff kids. A gotta own album. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Among The Best Vienna Philharmonic Strauss Recordings Ever.......2003-01-05

Along with my recording of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's 2001 New Year's Concert, this has become my favorite in the longstanding Vienna Philharmonic series. Muti leads the orchestra in a series of elegant, unmannered performances of the Strauss family's music, with exquisite interpretations of the waltzes "Wine, Women and Song" and "On The Beautiful Blue Danube". The sound quality from EMI's recording team is absolutely first rate and much better than most who've recorded these concerts. The Penguin Guide To Classical Music rates this performance as among the definitive Vienna Philharmonic New Year concerts. ...

This is good value at any price........2001-08-02

Happy the reviewer who was lucky enough to attend this concert! In far distant Australia we can only watch and listen enthralled to a telecast, a yearly rite which always brings tears to this reviewer's eyes. A CD of each concert is soon on the market, and the New Year 2000 issue is one of the best. The program itself is well balanced in all respects, not least in that it provides four items receiving their first performance at these concerts alongside many perennial favourites. Johann Strauss Jnr's longest waltz "Wein, Weib und Gesang" is here, complete with its superb introduction. Wagner selected this 1869 waltz to be played in the foyer at Bayreuth during intermission. Ricardo Muti achieves largely unfussy and unmannered performances. Some might consider the slight holding back of the flow early in IA and 3A sections of the waltz "An der schonen blauen Donau" a little excessive. Elsewhere the dynamic shadings, and the subtleties of phrasing sound as natural and as easy as breathing. EMI's engineers were on hand to record the event and they provide some of the most realistic sound quality I have ever heard. The well-mannered and well-heeled morning audience provide never an audible cough or sniffle (such is the magic of the Strauss Family), and they provide some disciplined clapping during the "Radetzky March". There is 92 minutes of music here, spread over 2CDs. This is good value at any price.

An Amazing New Years Concert.......2001-07-07

I was lucky enough to attend two of the three performances of this concert in Vienna, (Tickets are awarded via a raffle conducted by the Vienna Philharmonic).

The concert was wonderful, the music well paced, the audience was enthralled. Muti had a working relationship with the orchestra not like any other concert in recent history.

The recording captured all of the acoustical excitement of the concert, right down to the Triangle being played in the Blue Danube Waltz. The listener feels as if they are in the concert hall with the rest of the audience.

This is probably the best New Year's Concert recording ever.

As with the history of art, the Vatican has played an important role in fostering the creation of music; and in writing music for the Catholic Church's rituals, composers like Palestrina and Monteverdi became cornerstones in the development of Western music. So it's fitting that the Vatican has decided to celebrate the Great Jubilee 2000--its commemoration of the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Christ--with a collection of music. Magnificat includes performances of very familiar pieces of sacred music (Franck's "Panis angelicus," Gounod's "Ave Maria," and Mozart's "Ave verum," one of the most sublime pieces ever written) as well as some newly commissioned works: the "Cantico del giubileo" of Ennio Morricone (commissioned for Magnificat) and Jean-Paul Lécot's official hymn for the Jubilee. Deliciously ethereal collection.......2006-12-28

This is one of the most beautiful collections of choral music I've ever heard, and as a choir singer since childhood, I've heard a lot. The soloists are fantastic; their reputations certainly precede them in these performances. I found this CD particularly beautiful at Christmastime, but it's not necessarilly seasonal music.

The highlights of the CD (and those songs I listened to three times in a row, are Paola Cecchi's performances of Llama de Amor Viva and Figlio Mio. Her voice is soft and smooth and absolutely delicious. I heartily recommend this CD to those who enjoy choral music, latin litergy, and incredible harmony.

Music for the Soul.......2002-07-29

I am listening to this CD this moment and it is truly Music for the Soul. Caballe has always been my favorite, and she is again compelling on this CD. I am delighted to be a new fan of Paula Cecchi on track 11, Figlio Mio. I will look for other music by her. She has a beautiful voice. I recommend this CD to all.

This album is so lovely. This is too bad that every songs are known as other famous singer's songs. To be precise, all the songs are her original, and she just offer them to other singers before she release this album. But her singing is still remarkable.

This really is a great album, but most of the songs are cover versions, especially the Mai Kuraki songs "Love, Day after Tomorrow", "This is your life", "Happy days", "Secret of my heart", "Delicious Way" and "Stay by my side" would rather be worth listened in their original version!

But I have to admit that Aika's singing skills aren't quite like any other artist's: Just like a mystic chant, it really goes straight to the heart!

It's a pity that GIZA USA took most of Mai Kuraki's songs, which already have been released on american territory. They should have rather let Aika participate more on the album, presenting her own songs, especially as they are telling on her official HomePage what a great songstress Aika should be!?

And don't let you blend by the publicity of the album, as she is as new to japanese audience, then she is to US audience!

Wonderful lyrics, but..........2002-03-23

I would gladly buy another album by Akia--her voice and songwriting skills shine through the manufactured sound that is present on this disk. Akia's lyrics translate very well to English--but the American pop music plauge seems to have infected the music.

What Aika needs is a new producer and a live band to go with it--then she'd be very close to perfecting a sound to match her words. I'd suggest taking a page or two from Chihiro Onitsuka's book would suit her better in the long run.

deep meditative music.......2007-03-22

I first heard the Gundecha Brothers live on a recent trip to India. It was at the annual music festival for Swami Vivakanada's birthday in Kolkata jan 2007. I was amazed at their amazing technique, beautiful tone and incredible sound. This recording recreates the spirit of that concert. Although recorded at a live festival in 2001, the sound quality is excellent as is the performance of this wonderful jugalbandi or duet performance. Dhrupad is one of the most ancient vocal forms of India and has it's roots in Vedic chanting, a 2000 year old tradition. Given the time needed for appreciation, this music will captivate and reward the listener with it's deeply meditative quality.
