The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Rather than riding the headwinds of continued interest in vintage disco--this is the lady who sang "I'm Coming Out," after all--Diana Ross's 1999 entry is a set of soggy adult-contemporary ballads and would-be "inspirational" numbers. If she's ever to score a radio comeback à la Cher, however, it'll be with one of the remixes tacked on at the CD's end. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Urban Diana Ross! .......2007-06-29
I absolutely love this album, I have been having it for a few years now and finally got the nerve to speak my opinion on it. This is probarly one of Diana's most overlooked albums she's ever made, I mean even though it's rated really good, it's not associated with her albums from the 70s and early 80s, but at least it's clear that this one is way better than anything from her RCA and early 90s days. The album contains R&B, urban funk, love ballads and some club music, throughout the album you'll notice the tone for it is mostly R&B and urban funk, mostly urban funk. The first three songs on the album,"Someone That You Loved Before" and if I remember "Carry On" appeared in Diana's T.V. movie "Double Platinum" and even though they appear in the movie they were not recorded for it. Overall each song compliments each other and Diana is great especially on "Carry On". This album is very fun, fresh, funky and free, so just remember "Every Day Is A New Day".
Not her most popular, but I personally love it @}->---.......2006-04-16
I really really like Diana Ross. She doesn't have the most powerful voice around, but it's pretty and soft and you can hear emotion in her vocals.
This cd wasn't her biggest success, but it's a gorgeous cd and I still listen to it even now. A lot of the music here, was on the Double Platnum 'soundtrack'. The two best songs is He Lives In You and Love Is All That Matters. She is a queen of ballads and there are plenty here. If you are a fan of hers and do not own this, you must do yourself a favour and buy it. It's a great cd.
Diana's Best Work Since Leaving The Supremes.......2005-05-30
I use to love to listen to Diana Ross when she sang with The Supremes. After she left, her music seemed to lack that certain spunk that she'd had while with The Supremes. I think that Every Day Is A New Day, is her best work so far since leaving the girl group. I can enjoy every song on the CD the same as I enjoy listening to The Supremes, without skipping to a better song. I have Diana's 4-CD collection, but I mostly only listen to Reflections I, because that is the one with all of The Supremes on it. Keep up the good work, Diana.
"The Divorce Album".......2005-05-26
Every Day Is A New Day (1999) was described by some as "the divorce album". Prior to the release of this album, Ross' then husband, the late Arne Naess, anoounced on National television his intent to divorce Ross before she even knew anything about it! This must have cut through the diva like a knife and the contents of this quite untypical album evidently reflects her thoughts and (distraught) feelings.
Every Day Is A New Day was released shortly after that London Heathrow Airport incident where Ross was arrested and detained for hours on end after allegedly assaulting a female security officer (she protested at the fact that her breasts had to be touched during a body search). Ross became the scourge of the media, criticising her for the incident amd this may have perharps overshadowed the release of this album as i had expected this to be a big comeback for Ross. This was one of her most carefully conceived recording projects in some years and saw the soul diva colloborating with a multiple number of producers including Arif Mardin, Chuckii Booker, Steve Skinner and Malik Pendelton, who were all established and respected producers in the R&B genre.
Every Day Is A New day had the soul diva carefully and succesfully updating her over-all style and sound. Some of the tracks capture some of her most gutsy, soulful performances in quite some time as she recorded only sporadically during the 1990's.
The album opens with Ross' triumphant and soaring renedition of He Lives In You (originally recorded by another great diva Tina Turner for Walt Disney's animated classic, The Lion King). Ross is backed by an effective South African orchestra and rousing gospel vocals on the tracks chrous. Ross delivers a razor-sharp performance that's brimming with emotion. He Lives In You perfectly complimented her legendary, goddess-like status and some even went so far to say that this was her most magnificent and exciting recordings in years.
The sparkling, vibrant ballad Love Is All That Matters, written by Diane Warren, was originally a duet with R&B sensation Brandy in Ross' television movie Double Platinum (1999). Ross' solo version is still effective and irrisistiable even though being familiar and quite typical of Ross' ballad stylings.
More unusual was Ross' blatantly personal, heartaching ballad, Until We Meet Again. It's undoubted that Ross was thinking of Arner Naess as she sings this song in anunusually deeper, huskier style. These emotions are evidently stirred up inside her as you hear her yearning, almost anguish-filled voice.
The album then abruptly swerves direction and drives into urban R&B terriotry on the cool, groovy Got To Be Free. Despite all of Ross' enduring glamour and elegance on stage she still (thankfully) retains some of that streetwise edge in her singing on tracks such as Got To Be Free. She enhances her delicate, melting voice to great effect on the verses whilst the chrous is contagious. This, complete with divine musical arranegements, would have made an ideal choice for release as a single but it remainded hidden away on this album.
The original, jazzy version of her club hit Not Over You Yet is deep and mellow with swirling, electronic, R&B flavoured sound effects on the tracks dreamy chrous. Ross is in superb voice, delivering another husky and compelling performance which was a complete contrast to the more famous dance she took into the British Top 10 charts. The gorgeous So They say continues the sweet, mellow mood and Ross' exuberant delivery is exhilirating.
The haunting, atmospheric title track serves as one of the projects ultimate highlights. The startling, compelling mixture of Soul-Acid Jazz-R&B is ignited by a moody, interesting vocal performance from Ross. Without trying to analyse this too much, it is not too perceptive to detect the blatant mixed up emotions on this track where her soft, delicate voice shifts between seemingly points of utter despair to complete self re-assurance. This was the beginning of what seemed to be Ross'troubled period between the time of her arrest at Heathrow Airport until the (at one time unthinkable) drunk-driving incident that led to Ross having a short spell in prison (well a total of just two days actually but for a world wide, phenomenal superstar like Diana Ross it still proved shocking). Every Day Is A New Day showed how Ross could comfortably hit the times impeccably well with, as usually the case with Ross, ease, style and finesse.
Another reflective track was the catchy Sugar Free, a commercial-flavoured R&B number that is very uplifting in its content whilst the stand-out ballad of the album has to be the fabulous, Someone That You Loved Before. Ross delivers anotyher stunning, heart-aching performance with her soft, evocative voice shimmering with drama and emotion. This was also featured in her movie, Double Platinum and was released as an American single though all too typically the Americans just weren't interested in any new Diana Ross record with interest in her solely generated on re-packagings of her greatest hits.
Hope Is An Open Window was a blatant attempt at updating the whole Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand) ethos though it fails to live up to the anthemic qualities of that track. Ross' stellar performance is impressive to say the least but her singing is literally drowned out at points by the raging gospel backing choir on the tracks chrous.
Carry On captures a red blooded, ferocious performance from the great soul diva. The fire and passion in her voice burns bright as she belts out this number with all her heart and soul, getting down and sounding like a true club mama! Ross showed she hadn't lost her touch on this jamming, rip-roaring number where her sharp, distinct vocals surfboard along those pumping, heavy bass-line, pulsating rhythms. A great dance record that is a would be classic. Undoubtedly should have been lifetd as a single.
The album then bows out (this review refers to the English release of this album so some of the remixes vary on the American version) out on another pumping dance tune, Not Over You Yet that became a big club hit in late 1999 as well as crossing over on to the main U.K Top 10 charts. i had just turend 20 when this came out and remembered really loving dancing to it in the clubs - infact it still stands very well now. It certainly showed that Ross hadn't lost that fire, sassiness and streetwise edge. Fntastic!
After the U.K Top 10 success of Not Over You Yet it looked as though Every Day Is A New Day was set to be a smash hit but alas, and rather bizarrley, the album peaked at No.71, spending just one week on the chart listings whilst not even embracing the U.S Top 100. Even so Every Day Is A New Day is overly a really great album from the soul diva and fans undoubtedly will be delighted!
Ian Phillips
Diana's Storybook of Love Gained & Love Lost.......2005-05-02
Ms Ross released three fine studio albums in the 90s: the pop classic "The Force Behind the Power" (a runaway Platinum success in the UK), the R&B classic "Take Me Higher" and this album, "Everyday is a New Day". "Take Me Higher" is, in my opinion, the best of the bunch, with "Everyday is a New Day" a close second.
Before listening to this album I recommend (if possible) that you watch the Diana & Brandy movie, "Double Platinum", as it'll put the songs into context. The album opens with the souring, majestic sound of South African drums and rhythms of "He Lives in You", which is an uplifting track. Diana's vocal delivery is alive, clear and confident.
Although this album isn't as immediate as "Take Me Higher", it's interesting none the less for the following reason: like "The Boss" and the "Diana" albums, the tracks here mirrored the events of Diana's personal life very strongly. Little did we know at the time that Diana's marriage to Arne Naess was on the verge of collapsing, and that she would embark on one of the darkest journeys of her life.
There's a melancholic feel to the album and this is apparent in the ballads. The first ballad, a Diana Warren composition, is "Love Is All That Matters", which is a beautiful track. It should have been released as a single.
"Until We Meet Again" is the second ballad on the album and it opens with a lovely guitar intro. The lyrics are particularly poignant:
"Who would have ever thought the day would ever come
When we would see a love like this fall into pieces"
There's a touch of sadness is Diana's voice that's quite moving.
The middle tracks have a laid-back R&B groove, and most of them were produced by 'Zavy Kid' Malik Pendleton. "Got To Be Free" is a cool cut - Diana sounds great. However, the outstanding R&B cut has to be "Not Over You Yet", which is one of the sweetest uptempo cuts that Diana has recorded. It has her singing in a lower key than normal. It's very different to the Metro version that was a UK Top Ten smash hit.
"So They Say" and "Every Day Is A New Day" are mid-tempo R&B grooves, the latter being the funkier of the two.
"Sugarfree", produced by Chuckii Booker, is the second most outstanding R&B cut. It's a sort of cat and mouse love tease that Diana pulls off with ease.
"Someone That You Love Before" (written by Diane Warren and Eric Carmen) has a bitter-sweet touch to it. You get the impression that this was her heartfelt message to Arne (who sadly fell to his death in a climbing accident in 2004).
"Hope Is An Open Window", co-written by Diana herself, is my least favourite song on the album. Sure, I love the spoken intro and the gospel backing vocals, but it's one of those schmaltzy "if we hold on to each other, everything will be ok" messages that Diana seems susceptible to singing. There's one on every album!
The movie version of "Carry On" is far more soulful than the diluted remixed version included on the album - it's still an inspirational dance anthem.
Please note that there are at least 3 international versions of this album - the North American version includes the awesome Hex Hector remix of "Until We Meet Again"; the UK/European version includes the Metro mix of "Not Over You Yet" and the Japanese version includes another Diana composition, the funky "Drop The Mask". By the way, the latter track is included on the "Not Over You Yet" single, so you may be able to find it on Amazon.
So there you have it - an interesting, contemporary album with a touch of melancholy. I got the impression that Diana dropped her guarded veneer and poured out her heart about love gained, love lost and the heartache that follows. For this reason, the album comes highly recommended.

Is any recorded, tenor, singing voice as lovely as Kenny Baker's? As a child, I often heard him during the 1930s on the Jack Benny show, but have scarcely thought of him since. Amazon.com offers him on four CDs: BABES IN TOYLAND, LOVE WALKED IN, THE STARLIT HOUR and WEILL FROM BERLIN TO BROADWAY. Over the years, I have heard the recorded voices of many tenors, mostly operatic. Their fine voices were excellently trained, often to a wider range and more difficult music. But note for note, their sound as recorded is not I think as sheerly beautiful as Kenny Baker's. A splendid, unspoiled, unstrained, natural gift, put to disciplined and tasteful use! His enunciation is remarkably clear, and his musical line, perfectly smooth. He makes each song a different story, as in the six pieces here from BABES IN TOYLAND.
My claim is easy to test. This website has CDs with excerpts for listening to the best tenors of the 20th century, including Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Giovanni Martinelli, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Richard Crooks, Jussi Bjoerling, Morton Downey, Mario Lanza, Giuseppe di Stefano, Nicolai Gedda, Jan Peerce, Leopold Simoneau, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Of course, the earlier the career, the greater the damage to the recorded voice from primitive technology. Heard live, who knows which voice was most beautiful? But at least we have what earlier centuries could only imagine: lasting copies of live performances. Listen to Kenny Baker's voice on tracks 2 and 8 of BABES IN TOYLAND, and then compare.
The numbers from THE RED MILL will make you want to hear more. This operetta, also composed by Victor Herbert, was first produced in 1906, three years after BABES IN TOYLAND. "Moonbeams" (well sung by Eileen Farrell) is lovely; "Because You're You" (a duet between Farrell and Felix Knight) is quite simple but surprisingly affecting. The last two are the best: "Every Day Is Ladies' Day with Me," and "In Old New York." They are patter songs, perhaps inspired by, and surely as deft, as the ones that Gilbert and Sullivan were writing two decades earlier. Both are sung by Wilbur Evans, in a rich baritone, with perfect enunciation and marvelous comic flair. Great fun!
The selections on this CD were recorded in 1944 and 1945, then released in 1946 on both 78s and 10" LPs. For this CD, they were remastered from wartime lacquered-glass originals. Baker and Evans emerge in radiant form, surely much closer to live sound than reached our family radio via AM transmission 65 years ago. The orchestral and choral sound is less attractive. Poorly miked?
Very, very truncated........2002-12-09
The scores of Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" and "The Red Mill" are lovely classics, but the incomplete scores represented by this Decca Broadway remastering of its antiquated 78s are not the best reprentation. My advice: wait for the John McGlinn "Babes in Toyland" to be released. As for "The Red Mill", you'd do better to pick up the Ohio Light Opera's double-CD from Albany Records.
incomplete pleasure.......2002-11-09
Two terrible mistakes keep this from 5 stars.. BABES IN TOYLAND is not complete as they are missing the delightful IN THE TOYMAKER'S WORKSHOP. Why? In THE RED MILL they use a butchered take of EVERY DAY IS LADIES DAY WITH ME. Again, why?
John McGlinn will be out with a complete BABES soon - and there is a lot of music in it - so you may want to wait.
Finally available on CD!.......2002-08-01
Decca's 1946 album of selections from Victor Herbert's celebrated musical was a welcome addition to record libraries, covering most of the major songs plus some of the delightful dance music. The album was reissued as a ten-inch Lp in 1949. A later reissue in 1957 dropped 4 songs to fit the score on one side of a twelve-inch Lp backed by six selections from Herbert's THE RED MILL. That pairing is reproduced here but the CD contains the complete BABES IN TOYLAND program! It's nice to have it back too! Nice of Decca to give us this early Christmas present this year. But BABES IN TOYLAND is a score that enchants all year round. How strange that no other complete recording exists.
The six selections form THE RED MILL offer a nice bonus, and the selections are well sung.

bravarto.......2005-05-03
this is my second arto tuncboyacian purchase and Im as delighted
as ever with it. his musik is refreshing and honest. it takes courage and dedication to produce material like this, and that is a rare thing these days.
Incredible live or recorded.......2002-03-23
I heard Arto live last night and was completely blown away by this musician. I had heard his CD's which I just love, but never imagined he could do all those interesting instruments and sounds live. Even the incomprehensible "international" language he often sings in is unmistakably real. The music kept you rivited for 2 full hours, which is about 6 times longer than my normal attention span for live music, even if I like it. I highly recommend you listen to this great, fun, unique sound.
"The life is a dream and one day we will wake up to reality".......2002-01-05
"The life is a dream and one day we will wake up to reality". Those are the words of author's 7-year-old son. Words, that entirely convey the essence of this spiritually condensed music. I was completely carried away by the music and the voice of Arto Tuncboyaciyan, but when I read his comments to the album I realized that this man is one of those that are born to purify the humanity, to make us cleaner and kinder. An Armenian born in Turkey in an ancient Greek village absorbed the musical traditions of those nations. His deep connection to his roots and extremely fruitful cooperation with Paul Winter created this amazing blend of music. To me the most remarkable works are #1 "Broken Arm" - a unique blend of Armenian, Greek and Turkish intonations and #4 "I Miss You Every Moment My Brother" - a crystal clear Armenian melody.
Awsome.......2001-05-31
If there were more stars beside five I'll give this CD 5 more.
Fantastic, Armenian-influenced music.......2001-02-17
This release came out about the same time as "Journey with the Sun" the new CD by Paul Winter and the Earth Band. Mr. Tuncboyaciyan contributed what I thought were the better pieces on the Paul Winter CD. Tuncboyaciyan is mostly known as a percussionist, but he also has an aboslutely mesmerizing voice. On this release, you get additional music by Arto and the Earth Band. The other musicians on the CD include: Jim Beard (keyboards), Eugene Friesen (cello), Hanneke Cassel (violin), Franz Hakl (trumpet), Paul Winter (soprano sax), Joannie Madden (Irish whistle), Vardan Crigoryan (duduk), Peter Herbert (bass), and Dixon van Winkle (tuba). With that line up you understand that this is not your traditional, Middle-Eastern percussion, singing with duduk-type music. this is a real nice blend of folk/world music that really works. I especially like cut number 1, "Broken Arm" (which is also on "Journey with the Sun") and the heartsong on cut 4, "I miss You Every Moment my Brother". when I played that latter cut on the radio in Alaska, I got several calls asking about the musician, and how to get ahold of the CD. This is a CD which is well worth the investment, emotionally as well as musically.

Album Description
Percy Faith was the master of distilling the best of melodies and in this collection from 1958, Percy rescues us from the images that Victor Herbert melodies tend to evoke - the operetta, and the "erstwhile lady singing (belting out?) Herbert tunes at the piano." With this in mind, Percy's early stereo spectacular brings us the best of the Victor Herbert tunes - with the grand voice of the orchestra to bring out the beauty of each song - twenty-three Victor Herbert songs in this collection! (Bill Halvorsen)

Customer Reviews:
Inauthentic Herbert/authentic Percy Faith.......2006-09-03
If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."
disappointment.......2006-08-14
This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.
"music giants come together ~ Herbert & Faith".......2004-02-09
Now we have something that only Percy Faith could tackle "The Columbia Album of Victor Herbert", composer Victor Herbert has all the elements that Mr. Faith was looking for, and what a workout the award winning Percy Faith Orchestra has in store for them, look at the result...pure satisfaction and then some ~ "TOYLAND" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Percy's arrangement comes from the heart and weaves a magic spell over the listener ~ "MARCH OF THE TOYS", once again the signature arrangement comes to the surface of each cue that Mr. Faith records, very stimulating performance ~ listen to this cue and visualize the toys coming to life ~ "A KISS IN THE DARK" and "KISS ME AGAIN", once again the magic prevails with soft and sweeping strings, The Percy Faith Touch comes to the forefront ~ and Percy was always there to record the music whenever the time presented itself, and it is here and now.
Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.
Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!
Total Time: 73:46 on 23 Tracks ~ Collectables 7565 ~ (9/16/2003)
Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08
Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.

THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL.......2005-05-31
Hey (good) music-lovers;
Take it from me- these guys are the real deal. As a childhood friend of their drummer, I know how much blood, sweat and tears went into this record- and it is truly amazing. It features powerful lyrics and a sound that is unique in its texture and style- it appeals to lovers of several genres. And, take it from someone who knows, these guys deserve success. In short, this record rocks and is a must-have to any hardcore/emo/punk lover worth their salt.

AWESOME!!!.......2005-03-31
I went to one of their shows last year and bought this CD. I couldn't beleive a band this good hasn't blown up. They could be huge if people gave them more recognition. Most bands in the top of the charts suck, so don't think END is bad just because you haven't heard of them. If you are reading this review, and like punk/hardcore then i suggest you buy this CD immediately. The guitar work and agression in this record is astounding. BUY IT.

Get This C.d. Its amazing!!!! Great guitars and drumming. Very Heavy S***...... Also very melodic.
A pleasant surprise.......2005-02-09
These three Canadians from Winnipeg have certainly filled a large amount of space on their most current offering, "The Shadows Cast." With just three, count them, three members, EVERY NEW DAY put out music that could fill every crack and crevice of a huge hall while still sounding professional with a seasoned-like veteran vibe. For many, their brand of music is described as Hardcore based with identifiable, sing-a-long melodies that would incite a crowd chorus after just a few songs. Their Hardcore intensity is present in every song as you might expect from an album of this caliber but when the swooning, borderline uplifting melodies take action the entire mood shifts pleasantly without you wondering what happened. In order to further enhance the harmonic moments, a viola and a violin were introduced in particular spots that truly brought forth a genuine sense of the ethereal and the unknown. Thankfully, those portions weren't thrown into the mix just for the sake of being different-it felt appropriate and most impressively, natural. EVERY NEW DAY has blurred the lines between brazen hardcore and popish accessibility without ever steering towards one side of those conflicting styles for support. They balanced the two with a graceful temperament while never compromising their speedy hooks or their hardcore tendencies. A couple of tracks worth mentioning are "One Day Older", "Ashes Fill the Air" and "Final Breath". These are by far the strongest tracks that showcased all they have to offer from their endless arsenal of music. Solid output from these hardcore Canadians.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19
I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.
FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28
The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

JILL EICHENBERRY ASTOUNDS IN THIS VERY MUSICAL BROADWAY DISASTER . . . . .......2006-12-26
". . . appealing and gutsy . . . " (William Raidy, Newark Star-Ledger) ". . . An engaging musical . . . a musical with a message and a welcome surprise . . . " (Jeffrey Lyons, CBS Radio) ". . . the show casts a pall over the audience." (Frank Rich, New York Times) ". . . a lifeless score and humorless book . . . " (John Kendrick, [...]) "Considered by some to be one of the ten worst Broadway plays. " (Victoria Woodhull website)
After three weeks of previews, ONWARD VICTORIA opened (and closed) at the Martin Beck Theatre on December 14, 1980. Eight months later, members of the original cast gathered at RCA Studios in New York to record the show. I, for one, am extremely grateful that they did and am indebted to Original Cast Records for its remastered 1994 CD release. Usually in agreement with John Kendrick, I do not find the score "lifeless." Rather, I find it refreshing and inventive; an "old-fashioned" Broadway score in the very best sense of the term.
Economic reality has extracted a heavy toll from the Broadway musical, primarily in the number of singers and dancers employed and the size and quality of the orchestra. String sections have been replaced by synthesizers; a crack dance corps and a separate big-voiced chorus have given way to 16 or fewer singer/dancers who do neither as well as they did in the good old days; the overture has all but disappeared; excellence has been replaced by ordinary. Not the case with ONWARD VICTORIA.
Just give a listen to the excellent vocal writing and choral work in the opening number "In New York The Only Sin Is Being Timid" (listed as "The Age of Brass" on opening night), Victoria's campaign song "Onward Victoria" (or, "Victoria's Banner"), "You Cannot Drown the Dream," and the hymn-parody "A Valentine for Beecher;" and the stand-up-and-cheer second act finale. Incidentally, are those Bach-trumpets I hear in "Valentine?" Maybe the book was humorless, but catch the references to incest as per Sophocles in "Something for the Lord," artfully sung by Jim Jansen, and this line - and others - from "Beecher's Defense": "Plymouth Church should be proud to have a preacher so endowed." Not all the lyrics are as inspired as these ("Love and Joy" is a case in point), but even Oscar Hammerstein, II, penned a few clinkers. How about this gem from SOUND OF MUSIC: "You need someone older and wiser telling you what to do-ooh. I am 17 going on 18. I'll take care of you."
The cast is uniformly excellent, but Jill Eikenberry is a revelation! Known primarily as "Ann Kelsey" on TVs "LA Law" (153 episodes, 1986-1994), she reveals herself as a fine singer-actress in the role of Victoria Woodhull, a feminist who, decades before women won the right to vote, was the Equal Rights Party candidate for President, running against incumbent Ulysses S. Grant. In addition to her campaign-style numbers, Ms. Eikenberry gives us two lovely, character-building ballads, "I've Had a Taste of Forever" & "Another Life." Beth Austin, as Woodhull's sister Tennie Clafin, joins Victoria in "Magnetic Healing" & "I Depend on You" and gets her chance to shine in the big, brassy, show-stopping "Respectable." Lenny Wolpe (Feldzieg in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE), as restaurateur Charlie Delmonico, has a great time with "Unescorted Women;" Jim Jansen (Post Office prosecutor Anthony Comstock) gleefully reveals "Every Day I Do a Little Something for the Lord;" Michael Zaslow (Henry Ward Beecher, charismatic preacher of Brooklyn's Plymouth Church) explains away his wife's infidelity with "A Woman Like Beth" and joins Victoria in "Love and Joy," the only number that, in my opinion, doesn't succeed.
A "lifeless score?" I think not. Rather, a delightful score that transcends its appallingly bad book. (See also WHOOP-UP, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, et. al.) Without a complete rewrite of the book, it's doubtful that ONWARD VICTORIA will ever again find its way onto the stage, so let's be grateful that this fine recording, with members of the original Broadway cast, is here for us to enjoy.
Highly recommended.
Melodies for a change - Thank God!.......2002-12-13
I thoroughly enjoyed ONWARD VICTORIA'S lush score. I am unable, even after 2 weeks, to get Mr. Herrmann's melodies out of my head. It is unfortunate that the theatrical environment of today only encourages the big, garish, pop scores of the talent-less British wave of writers. I hope Mr. Herrmann keeps on doing what he is doing - Thank you Keith Herrmann!
