Editorial Reviews
Muzine, June 2003
One of the most impressive acoustic CDs in recent years, the dambrots debut marks them as a band to watch.

Album Description
Sweet yet soulful vocals, fine decorative acoustic guitar work, and a unique blending of pop and folk influences, combine to make "especially not love" a stunning debut CD by the dambrots. Listeners are drawn in immediately to this collection of 12 deeply moving and emotionally gripping tracks.

The powerful but understated lyrics explore diverse and compelling subject matter, making the CD an emotionally charged ride from start to finish. While tracks like "not quite," and "pointless" are filled with a sense of skepticism and betrayal, others like the upbeat and uplifting "catching up with yourself" are full of hope and optimism. "sandy," one of the CD’s best tracks, relates the story of its title character with great sympathy. The vocals throughout are powerful and haunting, particularly on several other highlights like "all the sorority girls," "revue # 25" and "all that heaven allows."

With this debut behind them, the dambrots' musical horizons appear to be limitless. "especially not love" is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Especially Not Love.......2003-07-07

I am a longtime admirer of the great female voices of the 70's, 80's and 90's such as Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Suzanne Vega, and Sarah McLachlan, and so I was very excited when I heard The Dambrots "Especially Not Love". The Dambrots' vocalist Dawn Marie captures the folkish, lyrical sense of the 60's and 70's, with elements of the new wave, and Lilith Fair era sounds of the 80's the 90's, while still creating a style that is uniquely her own. "Especially Not Love" has excited me more than anything I've heard in quite some time, and I find myself playing it over and over again.
The Dambrots definitely have my attention.

5 out of 5 stars Iýve been waiting for a CD like this........2003-04-17

This CD is a breath of fresh air. I've been waiting for a band like this, that can bring music back to the basics: a voice and an acoustic guitar telling the world something. The vocals are perfectly delivered, never overstated. You can almost feel the pain and heartbreak in her voice when she sings some of the songs. The acoustic guitar arrangements capture the songs beautifully. It's amazing how much power there is in the sound with very little instrumentation. I'm very happy to have discovered this band.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful debut.......2003-04-13

This CD is both beautiful and haunting. Wistful, melancholy, but also playful, clever and sincere. I especially liked "catching up with yourself," "hey sunshine" and "pointless." The songs contain elements of folk and pop that can't be categorized neatly, and these pretty and heartfelt tunes really took me to another place. "especially not love" hits a number of emotional chords, yearning and hopeful, sad yet caring.
