Customer Reviews:
stellar compilation........2007-03-19
i did not arrive on the planet until 1961, so these were not my songs, but i am loving them all the same. a devoted audiophile, i have been acquiring a taste for popular music from the forties only recently. this is a stellar collection if you are looking for pop music from that era. if you get this double cd compilation, rhino records 2 cd's titled "songs that got us through WWII volumes 1 & 2," and "G.I. jukebox," from hip-o records, you will have 5 discs (with some, but not much overlap in songs) of music to transport you back in time for an entire evening. highly enjoyable stuff.
Awesome collection for the WWII generation..........2007-03-02
I work with elderly people and purchased this CD to play for them at their New Year's Eve party. They loved it.... Nostalgia was definitely in the air. There are a lot of songs on this CD for a great price. Highly recommended.
GREAT CD- Had a 1940's party -Residents Loved it!.......2007-01-18
Ordered this cd for our 1940's Afternoon of Music. Our Elderly Residents Loved it! Great selection!
Good songs, but some later remakes.......2006-06-03
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, if you're enjoying this collection -- I hope you'll continue to enjoy it.
But those who are thinking about purchasing this set should know that some of these recordings are not the original versions, but were recorded well after World War II. For example, the Andrews Sisters and Harry James, among the artists represented on this compilation issued by Capitol, were not on that label until after the war. The reason that the sound quality here is so good, at least on some songs, is that those recordings were made in stereo during the 1950s.
Even the usually reliable All Music Guide mistakenly assumed that Capitol created this good-sounding collection through cross-label licensing and 24-bit mastering. In reality, the label simply used its own later versions of some of the songs, rather than licensing the originals from other labels.
None of this is a reason not to enjoy this collection unless you're looking for recordings that were actually around during World War II -- if so, you'll need to keep searching. I give this collection only 2 stars because I think that Capitol may be trying to convince consumers that these are the original versions of the recordings, when they're not. (If Capitol had actually obtained those originals, this collection would deserve 5 stars easily.)
You'll be singing these songs all day long........2006-01-23
Of all the CDs of songs of the 1940s that I have heard, this one really touched both me and my wife a lot. We play the songs whenever we are in the car and we find ourselves waking up in the morning singing these wonderful songs.
The remastering has produced terrific sounds of these songs we grew up with. This would be a wonderful gift for someone who was alive in during Worl War II. Or, a wonderful gift if you want to know what music was like in the 1940s (which we refer to as the good old days).
So many of the big bands of those days like Les Brown, Kay Kyser, Harry James, Stan Kenton. And vocalists like The Andrew Sisters, Helen O'Connell, Peggy Lee, and Jo Stafford singing these songs just as they sounded back then.
This music brings back those wonderful days when a typical date was to go dancing to one of these bands. You'll have such good memories when you hear them.
My wife and I couldn't be any happier or more enthused by any other CDs (yes there are two CDs, a total of 40 songs).
Do you remember Mairzy Doats, Tampico, the Pied Pipers singing Dream, Drinkin Rum and Coca Cola, Long Ago and Far Away, Johnny Mercer singing Strip Polka, and Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition. So many great songs popular during World War II.

old memories.......2006-03-04
I found this disk brilliant and was delighted when i was able to obtain it through amazon. i first heard it on the Russell DAVIES SHOW on BBC radio two and was amazed at how these two great tunesmiths work so well together. Great melodies too from a sad time in our history.
Master Vocal, Master Piano Command - What Else to Say.......2000-07-10
... OK, the repertoire is II War songs, a brilliant idea possibly credited to Tormé. This is a live recording with a beautiful opening by George Shearing playing "Lili Marlene" in a sensitive way that I presume must have shocked the audience due to their complete silence and reverence and to Shearing's tenderness. Don't lose the chance to listen to it.
A nostalgic mix of fun and romance.......1999-06-10
Torme and Shearing team up to present the best of the songs of the World War II era. They emphasize romantic ballads, with some lighter songs (e.g. "This is the Army") added for fun. This listener, born nine years after the war ended, wanted to go and volunteer at the nearest Stage Door Canteen after hearing this recording for the first time. It's that real, that moving, that good.

Jim Taylor's second collection. This recording, along with the first volume, is a collection of toe-tapping campfire tunes, barn dance music, and minstrel show melodies that were current around the time of the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Excellent Old Time Historic Folk Music!.......2003-01-29
For all of us that were traumatized by their high school history class, let's call this old time Bluegrass or Folk Music. This is a repeat of their first Civil War volume, and this review is a repeat of my admiration for the first volume. This CD is a bit slower paced and adds a Tin Whistle. I like to play my Irish Drum, Bones and Spoons to the first album. I like to play my Bouzouki, Banjo and Guitar to the second. Thank you for the Irish influence. My ancestors fought on both sides of the Civil War. That makes a lot of sense, Irish killing Irish under generals with English last names. A strange twist of fate. Unfortunately, this was one of the only alternatives to the Great Potato Famine back in the motherland. What if they put down their rifles and picked up their instruments and had a huge jam session instead of a war? Please read my review of the first album. The back up guitar in this album stands out more, and I love the skillful "bridge" transitions between chords. If the Jim Taylor group wants to keep making these CD's, I'll keep buying them. This is old time music at its best by an excellent group.
Music Lover.......2002-11-15
If you liked Jim Taylor first "Civil War Collection" you will love this one as well. Jim's Civil War Collections 1 and 2 are a must for anyone interested in Civil War music or in general Old Time music. I highly recommend, you will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Get this with "The Best of the Big Bands".......2006-04-06
Both items-, "The Best of the Big Bands" and "The War Year" are remarkable. They contain some extraordinarily rare recordings by famous artists such as a young "Doris Day" singing "Sentimental Journey" "Bing Crosby" singing "Shoo Shoo Baby," the latter being a wonderful piece of live history, and "Cab Calloway's - Minnie The Moocher"
Many of the tracks were originally "V-Discs" and intended for eventual destruction. That is, each "V-Disc" was to entertain the troops (of the greatest generation) for an allotted time, and then each fragile disc was to be melted-down.
I think, one can't own one box set without the other - they ought to be bought together to get an all-inclusive experience of the era.
However, don't look for flawless Glenn Miller recordings - or any other Big Band for that matter - in these box sets. Every recording in these box sets are presented in their original format - and what could be better! Personally, I don't want any of these recordings so clean that they are deprived of their original charm. Digital remastering can be taken a bit too far sometimes.
I've had to borrow this set for a longtime from a dear friend, but now I'll have my own.
Great 4 cd Series of some of the best songs from the era.......1999-05-22
If you want a great collection of music from the war years, this is it. I was not sure when I bought it because none of the artists were listed. But, not to worry, it all the original artists. Brings back memories about my parents and what they had to go through with the war.

Amazon.com essential recording
This two-CD set provides a window on the varied pop and jazz styles that flourished in the period, as well as an excellent portrait of Ella Fitzgerald between 1941 and 1946. The material ranges far afield, mixing ballads and period novelties like "Stone Cold Dead in the Market," with appearances by the Ink Spots and Louis Jordan. It's on the uptempo jazz tunes, however, that Fitzgerald reveals a new dimension of her talent, scat singing with the fluency and creativity of a first-rate instrumentalist. Her early grasp of bop is apparent in "Flying Home" and "My Baby Sleeps Like Bebop." --Stuart Broomer

Its interesting to notice how long it took for Ella Fitzgerald to grow up as artist. In her Chick Webb days her voice was just a chubby little charming sound and during 40-ies she was still singing too many novelty tunes: judging from this material one would NEVER in million years guess what a giant of jazz music she would became in the next decade.I am sure it was not only big bad company excecutive who make her sing such a silly songs as "Stone Cold Dead In the Market" (!), Ella herself obviously had some weaknes for novelties as well and it would need a strong personality of Norman Granz to point her in the right direction 10 years later, with his Songbook series. To enjoy this double CD one has to program the listening track, choosing best songs instead playing everything simply because her talent was wasted on too many ditties of the day.Presence of such guests as Ink Spots,The Delta Rhytm Boys and Louis Jordan was a good marketing trick, but most of this songs have did not age gracefully as Ella's later work for Verve. For lovers of 40-ies music this double CD is obligatory and I was curious to hear Fitzgerald's growth as a singer from 30-ies Band vocalist to 50-ies Songbook legend, but too much of this music is forgettable!

Mills Brothers Till then.......2002-05-19
This song reminds me of my army days in New Guinea
Great Music From A Troubled Time.......2001-06-13
These are the songs the country was singing and listening to during World War II. It is always interesting to know what music America was listening to during various stages in its history and this two CD set contains an excellent sample of the songs that were popular during this period. I wasn't familiar with all the songs, but I have heard of most of them. Prior to being aware of this music set, I introduced a number of these songs to 4th and 5th graders in a volunteer class and they enjoyed listening to them and singing along to the words. I bought a number of this CD set as a surprise gift for them and I know they will enjoy it when I send it to them. It showed me that kids will enjoy old music if they are introduced to it. You will enjoy these songs whether you remember them or not. This is the way it was. Listen!
World War II nostalia.......2001-01-15
A fabulous double CD of the music of the war years interspersed with news flashes of great historic importance. A wonderful trip down memory lane for those who remember these years and a great historic resource for those who do not. The selection of the music is outstanding!
