From Buda Musique France, the producers of the much-honored "Ethiopiques" series, this is the first installment of a projected library of Swahili-language music from the Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, which lie nestled in the Indian Ocean just off the East African nation of Tanzania, and nearby mainland localities. Curated by Werner Graebner and devoted to chronicling material dating primarily from the 1920s through the 1980s (although deserving modern items will also be archived), the albums will no doubt prove an invaluable resource but must not to be remotely mistaken for dull academic exercises. Volume One is dedicated to tarab, a sexy, swaying orchestral music with intense Arabic influences and an underlying Indian subtext, the whole warmed by the sub-Saharan gift for limpid melody. As played by the century-old Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club's consort of sweet-sour fiddles, percussion, Egyptian plucked strings, wooden flutes and zithers, the whole overlaid with sinuous male and female vocals, both solo and choral, it is the music of star-jeweled twilights, where spice-laden tropical breezes sport with slow-cresting ocean waves. --Christina Roden
Album Description
"This is a beautiful recording from Zanzibar, extremely refreshing and haunting. A very unique mixture of sounds and traditions - East Mediterranean music, Arabic music and so obviously African at the same time. Female and male vocals are superb and the choir responding to each singer is just wonderful! " - Amazon.com
The Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club was founded in 1905 following the Sultan's intention to create recreational associations on the island. The name means "brothers who love one another," and reflects the egalitarian and supportive aims of the club. The group is the oldest in Zanzibar, and has been one of the main currents in Zanzibari music throughout this century - sales of their cassettes comprise the bulk of the cassette copy-shops' trade! After the revolution in 1964, the name was changed to the Malindi Musical Club, but it has recently reverted to the original name. Swahili taarab music bears strong similarities to the classic Egyptian orchestras, with influences from India and Africa. Ikhwani Safaa's violins, ud, quanun, nai, keyboards, bass, guitar and percussion make up a sound that swells like the ocean while their celebrated vocalists - including Maulidi Mohamed and Rukia Ramadhani - lead a selection of the club's favorite classic songs. The first disc of this excellent series pays tribute to the storied Ikhwani Safaa taarab orchestra, which celebrated its centenary in 2005!

This new collection presents Swahili popular music from the eastern coast of Africa - Lamu, Mombasa, Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and the Comoros. Volume 1 pays tribute to Ikhwani Sxafaa, Zanzibar's oldest music club, celebrating its centenary in 2005!

This is a beautiful recording from Zanzibar, extremely refreshing and haunting. A very unique mixture of sounds and traditions. East Mediterranean music, Arabic music and so obviously African at the same time. Female and male vocals are superb and the choir responding to each singer is just wonderful! The tarab is definitely there. The sound is also extremely good.

Customer Reviews:
Every last note..........2006-06-14
A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

Product Description
While working on the book and film project, "40 Days and 1001 Nights", in which internationally famed bellydancer, Tamalyn Dallal lives in five Islamic countries, writes and films her experiences, she was in Egypt's Siwa Oasis. A Bedouin man asked "Would you like to hear the music from Zanzibar?". He played "Ifkhar", and she fell in love...with the music. That song inspired her journey to Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Africa that used to be part of the Omani Sultanate. "Taarab" is the most popular music of Zanzibar. It began near the turn of the century when the sultan sent musicians to Egypt to study music with the great masters. A unique style emerged, gracefully blending classical Egyptian, East African, and even Cuban sounds. "Taarab" means "Being transported by music". "Bashraf" are instrumental songs also played in Zanzibar. This style originated in Turkey, lives on throughout the Arab world, and Zanzibaris gave it a whole new meaning. On her first day in Zanzibar, a young man approached and asked, what are you looking for? She replied "Taarab".She was led up an old staircase, to the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club, that was formed 101 years ago, and today, it is like the "Buena Vista Social Club" of Zanzibar. Ikhwani Safaa are the creators of her favorite song "Ifkhar", and the only people in the world who play it. Ms. Dallal and Ikhwani Safaa collaborated on this cd, using Bashraf, and adapting Taarab music to make the perfect, most intense and heartfelt bellydance music on the market. If you like the classic sound of Egypt's "Golden Age", coupled with romanicism of old Havana, with depth and complexity, and no synthesizers, you will love this cd.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Amazing.......2007-01-18
The music brings you back in time . The music is pure and if you know the story of how this CD was made, u would love it even more. It is music to your ears!
"The Perfect Belly Dance Music.".......2006-08-23
Arranged for belly dance performances, this CD is a real find not only for dancers but for any World Music enthusiast. It presents new and traditional compositions from the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar, a band that was founded in 1905 and has been playing ever since, passing its music along from each generation to the next. In Zanzibar, its CDs outsell all other music albums combined, though they and their music are virtually unknown beyond the island's shores. The population of Zanzibar, an autonomous island state that is part of Tanzania, is made up of Swahili-speaking Islamic East Africans, and their traditional music, called taarab, is a unique blend of Egyptian-Arabic melodies and instrumentation with the driving rhythms of equatorial Africa and Swahili lyrics. Tamalyn Dallal, the CD's producer, is one of America's top belly dancers and a former Miss World of Belly Dance. She left Florida's South Beach scene a couple of years back after about 25 years as a performer, leader of an internationally known dance company and director of South Beach's MidEastern Dance Exchange studio, to embark on a solo journey of explore through the most remote parts of the Islamic world, teaching, studying regional dance and music styles and gathering material for an ambitious multimedia project - videos, recordings and a planned book. Since she left, many of us who knew her have been following her adventures via the blogosphere. In the liner notes to this CD, she describes how, in Malindi, Zanzibar, she followed a young guide into a back alley and up a wooden staircase to a rooftop. "This is Ikhwani Safaa," he told her. "You should come back in the night." She did, spent evening after evening at the club, and realized, "This is the perfect belly dance music." And Dallal knows what she's talking about, as this CD proves.

Major Surprise!.......2003-08-26
i didn't really know what to expect from this cd when i bought it, except that i really like the rough guide series, and i could be reimbursed for it (i work in a travel store). an easy risk. what a shock when i listened to it! from the first track i knew it was going to be special. the influences are just fantastic, there doesn't seem to be any one major category to place it in. Warm, jazzy, afro-cuban, bold, all across the board. i would definitely recommend this. needless to say it never made it to my work, this one's a keeper...
An unlikely gem.......2003-03-29
Well the Rough Guide compilers have done it again...for those of you familiar with the Rough Guide series and who are devoted fans, I don't have to convince you of the incomparable quality of these compilations.
For all the rest of you, this CD will prove my point. It captures forms of music from the Indian Ocean which are little known in the West, and is real treat, combining lilting and highly distinctive melodies with wonderful rocking rhythms evoking the Indian Ocean waves, steeped in history (as the jacket notes point out) from thousands of years of ships and cultures crisscrossing its waters.
On this CD, you'll find the sweet melodies of Malagasy country music, soulful subtle blues of the Reunion Islands, Arabic spice from Zanzibar, Mauritian reggae, Seychelles polkas and folk/electronica fusion from the Comoros Islands. Sounds intriguing? Just wait until you hear it.
Personal favorites include the magnificent opening track "Koba" from Madagascar, "Sak la Point" from La Reunion, "Sense" from Mauritius and the pounding upbeat closing track "Mamandrako".
If you're a jaded world music listener who thinks they've heard it all, then this CD is an absolute must to revive your faith in the beauty of music; really, it's a must for just about anyone.

"Certainly on this disc, old is gold." -SONGLINES
Pays tribute to Ikhwani Safaa, one of Zanzibar's most storied taarab orchestras, which celebrated its centenary in 2005! Recently recorded with Taj Mahal (as the Zanzibar Culture Musical Club) on a new release. Swahili taarab music bears strong similarities to the classic Egyptian orchestras of the Umm Kulthum era, with influences from India and Africa.

Customer Reviews:
Incredible.......2004-08-03
His music was original, while taking bits and pieces from traditional tunes. He really does not get the credit he deserves! I never imagined he meant for some of his songs to be played the way he played them.
Staggering Virtuosity!.......1998-12-20
Percy Grainger was a man of spectacular gifts. He was one of the most original composer/arrangers in the early part of this century. He was also a spectacular pianist in an age of spectacular pianists. This amazing CD documents Grainger's formidible gifts. It cannot be over-praised. Both the music and the performances are well worthy of any piano lover's attention. Don't miss this one!
