Sax Winterlude is a welcome departure from the typical hyper-jolly, sometimes brash holiday CDs. The music is contemplative and perfect for enjoying a hot mug of cocoa or a glass of winter wine.

Another installment in the "Winterlude" CD series, "Sax Winterlude" (Volume 5) gives a somewhat different twist on instrumental Christmas music than the other offerings in the series.

This CD is more attuned to those cold, winter nights when you're with that certain someone in front of the fireplace, or alone with your thoughts and a mug of hot cocoa.

As the name implies, the saxophone dominates this CD, but there is also a good mix of other instruments, making for a contemplative Christmas, which is the real intent of the series.

The players include: Mark Douthit (tenor and soprano saxophone); John Hammond (drums); Gary Lunn (bass); Mark Baldwin (acoustic and electric guitars); Bob Patin and Tim Akers (keyboards); and Eric Darken (percussion).

Don't let the instruments fool you -- "Sax Winterlude" is just as enjoyable a CD as the other offerings in this series. At just under 42 minutes, it is not as long as other Christmas CD's that emphasize quantity over quality, but there is still a good amount of music to hear.

Note: this CD is out of print, so it may be difficult to obtain. However, you will not be dissapointed in obtaining this title. Another recommendation for your Christmas music collection.

    I'm currently on my third copy of WINTERLUDE and it continues to be a favorite -- the instrumentals make lovely background music. I especially like to listen to it in my car...it's very calming and relaxing.

    I think of it as wintertime music, not just Christmas time. It is a joy to listen to, and I may go after the rest of the series John Darnall has made.

    The music on this album serves as the perfect counterpoint to the craziness of the Christmas season. Each selection is an introspective gem. You can listen to it all day long and never tire of it. My favorite is track #7, it has one of the nicest piano arrangements I have ever heard.

    I absolutely love this CD. I kind of "stumbled" upon this while Christmas shopping about 10 years ago. I love this one so much I had it played as quiet music before my wedding (which was obviously in December). If you like quiet/meditation music for the holidays or it works very well for background music at a Christmas party, I highly recommend this CD.

    "Winterlude" is yet another in the "Winterlude" Christmas CD series (specifically, Volume 8) that offers a thoughtful, musical Noel. This CD consists of a mix of traditional carols, both religious and secular.

    Regency Music again demonstrates that a musical offering need not be vocal to be pleasant. "Winterlude" is a good way to relax after a day of tree-trimming, frolicking in the snow, or shopping, and is right at home whether you're visiting with friends or alone with your thoughts.

    The performers include: Alan Steinberger, Bruce Martin, Bill Altvater and John Arnn (keyboards); John Darnall (guitar); and Eric Darken (percussion).

    Like the other CD's in the series, "Winterlude" blends equally well with a mug of hot cocoa, a warm blanket, a fire in the fireplace, and a light snowfall viewed from a frosted window. Also, as with the other offerings in this series, this CD is relatively short (just under 34 minutes), but the choice of carols is more important than the number of carols.

    Note: this CD is out of print, so it may be difficult to obtain. Yet it is a good way to round out the "Winterlude" series and really reflect on the Christmas season. Therefore, I recommend it as part of your Christmas music collection.

    I first heard "Winterlude" while getting physical therapy during the holidays of 1996. My husband and I were in an auto accident in November, and this music really helped to ease my pain during PT. I found the title of CD, and went and bought them all. "Winterlude" and "Guitar Winterlude" are my favs, but the others are just as great. If you find them for sale, buy them. They are very difficult to find. Happy Holidays to all, and be safe!!

    I recieved this CD for Christmas a few years ago, and it immidiately became my favorite. You just can't play it enough times! I was so excited when I found the Piano Winterlude piano book. I play through it all the time, and a lot of the songs are memorized now! David captures a unique Christmas mood that keeps your spirits stirred. Enjoy!!

    There are a plethora of instrumental Christmas CDs available on the market today, but none can compare to "Piano Winterlude." This is the perfect Christmas album.

    Imagine yourself at home on a winter's night. It's twilight, a light snow is falling, and inside, you are cozied up to the fireplace with a mug of hot cocoa or wassail, the Christmas tree is sparkling with lights and tinsel, and from somewhere comes the sound of a solo piano playing softly in the background.

    "Piano Winterlude" will set this scene for you perfectly. It is a compilation of traditional carols, hymns, and popular Christmas songs, played by pianist David Huntsinger.

    This CD will remind you of joyful Christmases past, or of happy gatherings with family and friends singing carols, or perhaps you'll reflect on the the contentment and the solemnity of the holiday season.

    While the CD is somewhat short (only 35 minutes), it remains one of the most important pieces in my Christmas music collection. This is one case where quality is more important than quantity. If you never purchase another CD, you'll definitely want to add this one to your collection.

    Note: This CD is out of print, so it may be difficult to obtain. However, your searching will be greatly rewarded once you have found it, for you will never tire of the sounds of the comtemplative Christmas that "Piano Winterlude" inspires.

    Because of this tape (I originally purchased the audio cassette), I am now addicted to piano music. I am in this site today to try to find it on CD. This is absolutely beautiful music and I'm looking for it every Christmas. I only wish it contained more music than it does. It's also very difficult to find another one that comes close to being as good as this one. I had to start buying classical music to quench my thirst for more of this kind of music!

    We own a library of over 1000 cds of various genres, and if I could only pick one to keep, this would be it. I've owned this CD for years, and I always come back to it, even at times other than Christmas. It is all piano, no other vocals or instrumentals. It's peaceful, soothing, uplifiting, even on a bleak February day or a blustery September night.

    Point of note, this album is currently listed on Amazon as "Various Artists" but from everything I can tell on my CD, it's played and produced by one artist, pianist David Huntsinger.

    This is by far one of my favorite Christmas CDs. Covering a few well-known and some centuries-old songs, the overall tone of this album is both celebratory and romantic, making it perfect for holiday get-togethers or solo listening. The piano is beautifully played, and if you really dig both Christmas and piano music, there is no finer blend of the two.

    5 out of 5 stars Another Great Instrumental Christmas CD.......2005-11-03

    Another entry in the "Winterlude" series, this is another of those instrumental Christmas CDs that you'll want to play while contemplating a reminiscent Christmas.

    As with "Piano Winterlude," which I have also reviewed here, "Guitar Winterlude" is another CD to listen to in the background while sitting in front of the fire with that special someone, or watching a gentle snowfall in twilight through a frost-framed window, and enjoying the twinkle of lights, the glitter of tinsel, and the reflective glow of glass ornaments on the Christmas tree.

    The music exudes a warmth that is hard to describe in words. The CD is slightly more jazzier than "Piano Winterlude," but it sets the same basic mood, with just the right mix of light jazz and orchestral and solo instrumentals, along with a slight hint of the human voice here and there to create the perfect introspective soundscape. Probably the best way to describe this CD is "a sonic parallel of the reds, greens, silvers and golds of a decorated room on Christmas Eve."

    The mood is set with "The House on Rowley's Bay" (track 1) and "Snowbound" (track 4). In between, the CD weaves itself around traditional carols with guitar, orchestra and various solo instruments, until finally it arrives at its destination with a restatement of the original theme (track 9).

    The players include: Mark Baldwin, Craig Nelson, Pat Coil, David Hamilton, Mark Douthit, Eric Darken, and the Nashville String Machine.

    At just under 42 minutes, the CD is not a long one. However, as in other "Winterlude" offerings, the emphasis is more on quality than quantity, making this CD an excellent addition to any Christmas CD collection.

    Note: This CD is out of print, so it may be difficult to obtain. However, as with the other "Winterlude" CDs, your search will be greatly rewarded, as this CD will help you to experience those special, contemplative moods that the Christmas season creates.

    For those who can't get enough Kenny G., this instrumental collection fills the gap. The sax soars and spirals through the tunes with light support by keyboard and percussion.
    The performers include Mark Douthit, John Hammond, Gary Lunn, Mark Baldwin, Bob Patin, Tim Akers, and Eric Darken. The Christmas music is treated very well and not overwhelmed. I loved it! The music is very subtle and contemplative.
