This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

Friar Stan Fortuna, Catholic priest and member of the order of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in New York City's environs, is also a recording artist whose message is delivered in the musical idiom most suited to his audience. On Sacro Song, his listeners are today's Catholic youth and Fortuna churns it up with rap and hip-hop laced with jazz horns, samples, and electronic programming. Backed by a group of highly stylized vocalists and rappers, Sacro Song both ends and begins with "Glory B," updated versions of what many will recognize as the popular Benediction hymn, "Gloria Patri." "Never Been Born" raps on pro-choice and the mercy of forgiveness, while "The Zipper Zone" speaks out for chastity and "Kumbya" stands up against drugs and teen suicide. Other numbers are anthems of praise, brotherly love, and spiritual renewal, all of which are done with taste and surprising aptitude, a happy marriage of evangelism and street credibility. --Paige La Grone

    Album Description

This is a 100% Catholic Rap CD which touches on themes such as pro-life and teenage suicide prevention. It is designed to deliver positive Catholic messages to our youth in the musical format that they most appreciate. A soul-stirrin', foot-stompin', in ya face mystical catechesis!

5 out of 5 stars Fr Stan 2001.......2002-01-12

I met Fr Stan last year, and went to a couple of his workshops which were amazing and really relevant to me. This was the first Christian CD I ever bought & I have to rate it in my top 3 albums of all time! I would recommend this album to anyone interested in something slightly different to the usual hymn thing. Grab it, and if you ever get the opportunity, grab Fr Stan too for a chat that is!

5 out of 5 stars Fr. Stan, Thank You.......2000-12-12

5 out of 5 stars Father Stan a GREAT INFLUENCE!.......2000-06-28

I seen Father Stan at the Sacred Heart Retreat House quite recently and he really made an impact on me with his music. This albums music is something we can all relate with. I commend Father Stan for contributing such a great talent and admire him for giving the proceeds from the album to help those less fortunate then ourselves. This is a great album!

5 out of 5 stars Father Stan is the man!.......2000-03-14

I attended a Youth 2000 recently where Father Stan was present. He has the wonderful spark about him that you just love. You can see his holiness shine. He is someone you would want to be around constantly with his humor, personality, holiness, and awesome singing talent. He puts out a good message and does not sing garbage. It is enjoyable music that I can listen to without worrying about bad messages. After I heard him sing at Youth 2000 I knew his CD would be 10 times as great. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a soul-stirrin', foot-stompin', in ya face religous but cool album!

Composer Sarah Stanton has imbued this music with her very heart and soul, and her deep connection with God. The harmony falls through the ear, stripping away the toughest layers. As it reaches towards the innermost part of the soul, it wraps itself around the heart like a shield of acceptance and peace. Ever beckoning and full of nostalgia, the music soothes as long-awaited rest is found. Therefore, come and listen…the music bids you peace.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not just another classical recording.......2004-11-10

This is an excellent recording of a talented string quartet performing Sarah Stanton's original compositions. Although these tunes are classical in nature, they do not follow typical classical chord progressions. Just when you think you know where the arrangement is going, the music flows in a different direction. Very interesting works and well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars great work from Jim Steinman.......2006-06-16

Jim Steinman, known for his operatic-style rock music (Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, etc.) has shown a more classic style of him in this one-of-a-kind musical. He takes several styles from the Civil War era and twists them with modern musical treatments.

You can hear many bits and pieces of music used in this album that Steinman uses much later in some of his rock songs, such as the intro to Making Love Out of Nothing at All, chorale phrases from The Future Ain't What it Used to Be and many others.

If you are a Steinman fan, this is a must!! Ray Earl Fox does a great job with the lyrics and they compliment the music to a tee.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it so much I got the rights!.......2004-05-26

Upon hearing this musical I loved it so much I went out and got the rights to direct it onstage this October in Cincinnati! I was always a fan of Jim Steinman's music, but I now also have a great respect for the lyrics of Ray Fox. Fox is a wordsmith much in the tradition of Stephen Sondheim, with intricate wordplay and quick patter. I would suspect that it was his early work with Fox on this project that led Steinman himself into developing into a world class, phrase twisting. lyricist himself. And of course you have Steinman's great ear for melody, but with a much different feel than his Rock music. A great lost treasure of American theater (come see it in October!)

5 out of 5 stars The Confidence Man.......2004-04-02

One of the undiscovered classics of the century. I hope to produce the first Australian production in November 2005. This show has a long and winding history, but I'll leave all that to the liner notes. Ray Errol Fox is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. I have never seen another talent like him - expect for Rupert Holmes - and these are the men I hold among my chief inspiration. Jim Steinman, the composer, whom many of you will remember from Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell has actually re-used many of these tunes in his subsequent projects. If you want the original version of his closing song from Pandora's Box, listen to Track One. "Milady" and "Something of this Masquerade may Follow" were re-used for TANZ DER VAMPIRE. Thank God this was finally released. It's a beautiful, heroic and courageous, discovered-at-last masterpiece of American musical theater.

5 out of 5 stars The Confidence Man.......2004-03-07

When a friend gave me "The Confidence Man" as a Christmas gift, he advised me that I would be in for a treat. I was somewhat skeptical since I had never heard of it, but since it was based on a Herman Melville novel, I was intrigued. And it had music by Jim Steinman. I liked the story, of course, and the music, but it was the lyrics (by Ray Eroll Fox) that captivated me. They are witty, literate and consistently surprising. I find something new to admire every time I listen. Anyone into American musical theater shouldn't be without this one!

5 out of 5 stars Simply buy it........2001-12-27

I loved Airwave by Rank 1 (Especially the ATB remix) but when i heard such is life i couldnt believe it. This group consists of Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij (two dutch producers) who know how to do powerful tracks with a special touch. a touch that reminds me the melancholic landscapes of North Europe. It has AWESOME vocals on it sung by some girl called Shanokee and the traditional rank 1 synth strings which i really love!!! please listen to the strings and how it starts with a mellow violin and it turns on a fuzzy string synth and I FEEEEEL FREE!!!!
It's a powerful song and, it's strange but i prefer the radio edit against all the other versions. (i usually like the original mix or club mixes) but this radio edit is perfect. Sit tight because Rank 1 are preparing a new album so if it's as good as their singles i will buy it!!! and in the same order you should buy the next ATB album which will be called 'Dedicated' and i'm sure it will carry us straight to paradise!!!

Enjoy it but first of all buy it (dont download hehe)

    3 out of 5 stars Rank 1 falls down a bit........2001-09-17

Rank1 take the great track " many miles, too soon". and give it some bad vocals. with some so-so remixs. The vocals just kill this track. make it almost a joke. same they did wiht airwave. Try to forgot them and it becomes a good track
