Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Inspirational!.......2004-10-08
Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Hymn singing as it should be.......2002-01-17
This is a very fine recital drawn from the core of the church and cathedral choir repertoire. Martin Neary proves here (perhaps more convincingly than anyone else) that a good hymn can be just as magical as a through-composed anthem for choir alone, and that the repetition of a single tune over verse after verse need not be a dull experience.
The hymns and tunes selected are indeed among the best-loved works in English church music. "O God, our help in ages past," "Love Divine," "Eternal Father, strong to save," "Be thou my vision," "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer" and the eventide chestnuts "Abide with me" and "The day thou gavest" are all bound to be the most recognisable even to those who are not regular churchgoers. Some of the Victorian composers have immortalised the cream of their talent in such hymns as "The King of Love my shepherd is" and "O thou, who camest from above." Purcell's tune "Westminster Abbey" - extracted from his anthem "O God, thou art my God" and set to the words "Christ is made the sure foundation" - shows how a stroke of inspiration of long ago can survive endless musical change by being adapted and absorbed into hymnody. Another adapted work is Hubert Parry's hymn "O Praise ye the Lord," actually the final part of an extended anthem ("Hear my words, ye people") and is presented on this disc in its original form, making for an interesting and refreshing change to the repetitive verses of the rest of the collection. Completing the programme are settings that fall more definitely outside of the realms of congregational singing: the powerful "Kontakion of the Dead" to an ancient tune and harmonisation from Kiev; the moving Air from County Derry set to the verse "I would be true" for unaccompanied boys voices (as sung by these very choristers at the Funeral of Princess Diana in 1997); Martin Neary's little tune "Studland" written for the blessing "May the Grace of Christ our Saviour;" his lovely arrangement of Sebastian Temple's "Make me a channel of your peace" (also sung at the Diana funeral) is here as well. Each item is a gem in its own right.
In this performance, each gem is polished to a high standard. Contrast is effectively made by the use of subtly different forces for different verses - there is an appropriate use of boisterous tenors and basses in "O worship the King" at the verse "O tell of his might," and a plethora of soul-stirring unaccompanied verses, particularly in "Praise to the Holiest in the Height." (I would challenge anybody to find a more moving moment in hymnody, achieved with such utter simplicity, than the performance of "And in the garden secretly, and on the Cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die" as it is on this disc.) This is not to say that Martin Baker's accompaniments are not another wonderful element in the performance: for instance, his clever doubling of the tune at a low octave in "Who would true valour see" for the words "No lion can him fright; he'll with a giant fight." On the subject of words, every single one is treated with care and attention to its meaning, individually and in context - the ensemble is finely honed and the enunciation is immaculate. Martin Neary draws every ounce of poetical significance from the words in these hymns, making real sense of them and allow them to speak as music, not simply as long lines of verse to get through as quickly as possible (which is often the problem arising with hymn singing in many churches today). As a finishing touch, several hymns have descants and alternative harmonisations, many of them supplied by Neary, who knows how to make them effective, stunning and highly original. An ensemble of trumpets and drums joins the Abbey Choir and organ for the performance of "All people that on earth do dwell" in the festive arrangement by Vaughan Williams - this is as stirring as many of the other hymns are moving.
This collection is a sample of hymnody that (in my humble opinion) far outweighs others I have encountered. There's a certain joy in listening to these performances - a joy that somehow remains fresh on repeated hearings. An inspired and inspirational programme: most warmly recommended!

Based on the novel 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell, The Pajama Game hit Broadway in May 1954 and ran over 1,000 performances. The plot revolves around a labor dispute at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, with two couples (Eddie Foy Jr. and Carol Haney, John Raitt and Janis Paige) in the middle of it. The score, by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, includes Raitt's classic ballad "Hey There" (dueting with himself as recorded on a dictation machine), the humorous "Think of the Time I Save," and "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway," both set to memorable choreography by a Broadway novice named Bob Fosse. The following year, the Adler-Ross-Fosse team would team up again with Damn Yankees.
The 2000 remastered version of The Pajama Game features vastly improved sound and bonus tracks taken from a 1954 radio show: Raitt's "The World Around Us" (dropped from the show) and Raitt and Paige's "There Once Was a Man," both with a rehearsal pianist, and Adler and Ross themselves singing "Hernando's Hideaway" with Ross at the piano. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Just Like I Remeber When I was Young.......2006-07-27
My father was a big fan of Broadway musicals. I remember going to see the Pajama Game and Damn Yankees in a summer stock theater in Warwick R.I. which contributed to me developing my own love for musicals in the 50's and 60's. This recording though in monaural is an excellent reproduction of the LP record my father had and I used to listen to (sans scratches!). I would recommend this to any person who used to like these old classics. I would like to see a local theater group do this some day before it's completely forgotten. The interviews with the composer/lyricist and notes in the CD were wonderful too.
More is less........2004-08-15
A monster hit when it opened in 1954, and still a staple of community theatre groups, PAJAMA GAME has a delightfully refreshing score that never takes itself too seriously. On the whole it offers a better-than-average number of stand-out songs: "I'm Not At All in love", "Hey There", "Small talk", "Steam heat", "Hernando's Hideaway" and the ensmble "7 1/2 Cents." There are, however a few stumbles. "A new Town is a Blue Town" is dreary. "Her Is" is silly although the Bob Fosse dance routine made it work on stage. Both these were dropped from the movie version, so I suspect the authors also felt this material was weak.
The movie retained all of the original cast leads except for Janis Paige as Babe (replaced by Doris Day.) Day sings Babe's songs better, so your choice between the cast album and the movie soundtrack will depend on whether you need the whole score or not.
As for ths reissue...once again Sony has done a first-rate job. The sound is full bodied and rich, though necessarily mono, and the package includes some well-written liner notes.
A great recording, with the best cast, but..........2004-05-03
"The Pajama Game" is a truly great musical. Although it's most popular songs have truly been immortalized, such as "Hernando's Hideaway" and "Hey There", the show itself seems to be sadly forgotten by many (depite winning both Best Score and Best Musical in the Tonys). It remains very popular with amateurs and high schools, though.
This recording of The Pajama Game, a remastered version on the original cast, has VASTLY improved sound and some great extra tracks. Despite the new tracks, though, a lot of the score is completley missing from this recording, and a lot of the songs have been abridged, cutting out dialogue sections and a lot of dance music, like the wonderful "Jealousy Ballet" number, but the loss can be both a blessing and a curse.
The cast is the best recorded, in my opinion.
John Raitt as Sid - I'm not sure if this show was Raitt's star turn or Carousel was, but regardless, he is a fantastic talent and it really shows on this recording. His solos on this recording are superior to any other renditions. "Hey There", "A New Town Is a Blue Town", and "There Once Was a Man"(my personal favorite) are just fantastic. Great all around.
Janis Paige as Babe - Ok...she grows on you. If Paige is not singing in a more characterized voice, than she needs to be shot because she sounds like a wounded animal, BUT for the role her funky voice is very well suited. Her belt voice doesn't use much vibrato or any classical broadway norms, but her much grittier voice brings a more "real" feel to her character. "I'm Not At All In Love" is great and her comedic-like turn in "There Once Was a Man" is also fantastic.
Eddie Foy Jr. as Hines - I just recently finished performing as Hines in a production of "The Pajama Game" so I know the role well. Foy is my favorite recorded Hines, he has such a different voice and personality to his character that simply cannot be imitated. It's a shame so much of his role was cut from the movie. "I'll Never Be Jealous Again" is pleasantly comic, "Think Of The Time I Save" is cute and pleasant, and the opening is also great. An excellent performance.
Carol Haney as Gladys - Gladys is THE show stealing role of "The Pajama Game", and the underrated and underused Carol Haney stole this production way back when. Haney is cooky, lovable, and on stage, a fantastic dancer. Haney stepped into the role originally envisioned for Gwen Verdon and made it the role it is today, funny and wonderful. Haney sings two of the show's classics, "Steam Heat"(the best recorded), and "Hernando's Hideaway" both totally wonderful.
Stanley Prager as Prez - A really great performance. Prager gives a rough, growling voice to Prez and it comes off as a great perfomance. "Her Is" is great, as is "Seven and A Half Cents"(although Prager's voice humorously cracks in mid-verse). A good performance.
Reta Shaw as Mabel - Can't pull off a cute and perverted old lady any other way. Shaw's performance is solid in "I'll Never Be Jealous Again" with Foy. Pleasant to listen to.
Well, all in all, this recording, though very abridged, has the best cast and is just as good as a choice for a recording of the show. Both is better, but for casual and curious listeners, this one beats the London cast. For those who really want the full score, go London. If I had to pick the superior, I would very reluctantly choose this one(reluctantly, due to the abridged score and Ms. Paige. One thing is for sure, every theater lover must own a copy of this wonderful show.
Excellent musical...one of the best.......2003-05-28
I love the Pajama Game. First of all, it had an immense influence on me, having been the first musical I ever heard and the force that originally set in motion by fixation on Broadway musicals.
I also have to _deeply_ disagree with Mr. Stuart Howard, and to suggest that he in fact has no idea what he is talking about. All the musicals he said were "more important" than the Pajama Game only seem that way because they have been revived time and again. "Pajama Game" simply had the bad luck to become hopelessly dated due to cultural changes, and thus nearly impossible to revive successfully. Still, I personally think "Hernando's hideaway" and "Think of the time I save" still qualify as modern classics, and certainly it's hard to argue that "Once-a-year-day" hasn't been absorbed into our cultural consciousness.
As for Ms. Paige, I _love_ her cynical, witty delivery and extremely unique voice and style of singing, and I tend to believe that anyone who can't see her appeal has, to be blunt, outlandishly poor taste in music.
I love the Pajama Game, and, incidentally, I _highly recommend this CD. John Raitt's voice is a little cold, but it is also amazingly beautiful. The three comedy relief roles will all have you howling, Janice Paige is, as stated before, a genius, and unlike in my musicals, the songs will give you a sufficient idea of not only the story, but the characters...and "The Pajama Game" has deeper and more complex characters than any of the other old-fashioned musical comedies I can think of.
The Cat's Pajamas.......2003-02-18
Super score. Two standards of the genre: Hey There and Hernando's Hideaway, but also a number of outstanding production numbers and duets: "Seven and a Half Cents", "Steam Heat", "I'll Never Be Jealous Again", "There Once Was a Man". Most of the singing is excellent but sometimes I have to admit Janis Paige isn't on pitch and I prefer (dare I say it) Doris Day in the movie. John Raitt is the professional he always was. This is a 50's musical through and through, filled with serious love songs, comedy with a satirical bite, and endless energy. The extra tracks on this CD are nothing too wonderful, with excerpts from a pretty banal interview with composer Jerry Ross, but they do include a song you won't hear (for good reason -- despite inteviewer Mike Wallace's glowing support it is a pretty bad song) in the show. Want to know why this show was so good: George Abbott, John Raitt, Bob Fosse, Harold Prince, Adler and Ross, Eddie Foy, Jerome Robbins, Carol Haney, Peter Gennaro. Yes, there are shows with a power-packed line-up like that, that have been bad, but not many. Enjoy the memories this will bring back.

"Ghosts of the Abyss Soundtrack".......2003-04-15
The music fits the film well. The best tune on the album is a remake of Darkness, Darkness (youngbloods 1967) sung by an unknown artist Lisa Torban. A voice that just makes you repeat the selection over and over.
Ghosts of the Awesomeness.......2003-04-14
Oh my goodness! This was the best 3D Imax I have ever seen! (and yes I've seen more than one). And the soundtrack made it as good as it is! The song at the end called Darkness, Darkness was so fantastic and made me cry so much! Best ever!

Album Description
Welcome to Cross Way Church. What you are about to hear is the Spirit-Filled sound of the original music of our fellowship and what you may hear on any given Sunday morning at Cross Way. It was our hope to put the Spirit of true Worship on tape. And so very little was done in terms of overdubs and corrections. We didn't want this CD to be "perfect". That wouldn't be real. Our prayer is that this music will bring you into the Empowering Presence of the Almighty and encourage you to seek His wonderful face like never before. And if you're ever in neighborhood, stop by and visit us. We would love to worship with you.

Crossway Worship Band Rocks the soul.......2004-03-14
This band has real soul. With a fantastic blend of voices and instruments, this album raises praise to a new level. Pastor Doug Simmers and his band awaken the soul with "Come On Somebody" - my personal favorite on this album. What a way to come to the Lord! Try it out and you'll never be the same. I highly recommend all three albums if you are in to Christian Music to rock (and roll) the soul.

Interesting representation of the singer.......2003-11-07
Eva Turner was condemned to be remembered as a one role singer; the role of Turrandot. Her artistry went far beyond that. She was a slow starter in many ways, and it took a considerable amount of time for major houses outside Italy to notice her. Yes, she was enjoyed and used in the Italian opera houses, but ignored in her own land. Eventually, she made her debut there and was a hit. Her voice is not to everyone's liking, and some critics found her interpretations very "ordinary." Some felt she couldn't color her voice enough to render complete interpretations of the roles she sang.
The real problem was her voice was not subtle at all. Through her development it grew and grew in size (many other singers didn't want to sing with her, not because of her personality -- she was a trouper, but because they had to strain so to be heard when singing with her). As with all very large voices, the virtues are astonishing and the vices just as pronounced. Perhaps she was not capable of much subtle coloring as many smaller voices were capable of, but she was able to "raise the roof" in the theatres she sang in, and present a very powerful living drama. Her intonation was nearly perfect at all times. And, unlike is often thought, she had great stage presence.
Finally, when a role came her way, one in which she had no competition, people were willing to actually open their ears and hear what she had to offer.
This set of recordings is very interesting to listen to. Yes, as with all "complete works of anyone" we hear repeats of various arias. The key then is to listen and see what changes had developed as the performer expanded their understanding of the role. Few singers really show much development in that regard. In this case, there are improvements that we hear from time to time.
Some of the pieces recorded do nothing for me, and I wouldn't have wasted the time recording them, however, they reflect what producers were having singers record at that time.
One role that Turner sang and excelled in was the Leonora from Trovatore. Yes, she had the necessary agility. She even produced a beautiful trill. Sadly, nothing here gives evidence to this fact.
I recommend this recording for those interested in having recordings of this great and under appreciated singer who had so much to give. I recommend it also for those interested in hearing a truly huge voice (some say that even Nilsson could come close to the power of Turner) recorded with minimal destortion. We are not able to know exactly how magnificent her voice really was, not even through these recordings, but we can hear the even quality of her noble instrument.
It is a pricey set, but for those who are interested in historic recordings of very famous singers, I would recommend it.
Voice of a Legend.......2001-01-13
Dame Eva Turner was arguably the greatest singer that England produced in the last century. Sadly, she was also one of the most under-recorded singers in history. This compilation finally releases in one package all of the material that we know of at this time. Unfortunately, that means that there are numerous recordings of the same arias, done at different times. Rumors continue as to the existence of more material in the vaults of companies in England, but none of that is available.
What you will hear is the voice of the definitive Turandot, a role which Dame Eva premiered in many houses, though the first performance of the opera was sung by Rosa Raisa. However, Franco Alfano, who completed the opera after Puccini's death proclaimed Dame Eva as the perfect Turandot. She effortlessly produces enormous waves of sound that are, at turns, steely or supple. Her instrument was one that has only been equaled by the great Birgit Nilsson.
Dame Eva left the stage in 1949 and moved to Oklahoma, where she was a professor of voice at the University of Oklahoma for 10 years before returning to her native England and taking her place on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory. She died in 1990, at the age of 98.

Album Description
When Jan Berry lived out the lyrics to 'Deadman's Curve' in 1966 and wound up in a coma, his partner, Dean Torrence, kept the duo's name alive. Helped out by friends from Phil Spector's 'Wrecking Crew', Dean cut this sparkling little mini-masterpeice, shing as the raindrops beading up on the top of a Grand Prix. A Sundazed release.

Where do I begin?.......2007-05-25
For J&D fans, "Save For A Rainy Day" is the Holy Grail. As with "Pop Symphony," I long hopelessly scoured used record stores for these releases. The best I could do was a pretty good copy of "Command Performance," which I happily paid a fortune for.
Whoever invented CD's is the Edison of our time. It has allowed treasures like "Save For A Rainy Day" to be rereleased in what is clearly a better format. The bonus tracks included on many of these rereleases are like a personal gift.
"Save For A Rainy Day" was as wonderful as I imagined. Sure, Dean is not the greatest lead vocalist in pop history, but you can literally hear the effort and passion on each track.
There are some complaints about the quality of the sound, but it simply can't be helped. It was recorded in 2-track mono in Joe Osborne's garage, not 48-track stereo in the Capitol studios.
Just friggin' buy it!
A nice album to listen to while its raining outside..........2005-04-12
One of the first, and finest, lo-fi albums ever made. Don't look for anything life changing in this release, just some nice sounding pop music and slightly odd rain-themed sounds and songs. A pleasant oddity.
A good first album.......2005-02-18
This album was Dean Torrence's first solo album after Jan's accident. The album is hampered by Dean's "bubble gum" type music and simple lyrics. Also, Dean is not a strong singer on this album. However, it is a good first album effort.
If you can get a copy, please contrast this album with Jan Berry's first post-accident album (a bootleg) "Carnival of Sound". (Dean only sings background on a couple of songs, at most). I was surprised how good "Carnival of Sound" is when compared to "Save for a Rainy Day". This album was mostly done by musicians and friends of Jan, almost completely without Dean. For the first time, Jan had limited direct personal input into an album (due to his accident). In this case, Jan did not (could not) sing on the album and did very little writting for the album. Mostly, he contributed to the album concept and direction, arrangement, and production.
We used to play in Joe's garage.......2004-03-11
This is the first Jan & Dean album recorded after Jan Berry's horrific car crash. Previous Jan & Dean albums had been produced by Jan, so with Jan layed up in the hospital, Dean Torrence produced this album. He actually ended up making a minor masterpiece. But to backtrack a little, the album actually started when Dean heard a demo of the song "Yellow Balloon". Dean loved the song, and he decided to make it the next Jan & Dean single. Then he decided to record a whole album based around "Yellow Balloon", with all the songs having a "rain" theme. He even went so far as to include rain sound effects between all the songs. There were ten songs on the original album; five originals and five covers. The CD version features the complete original album in mono, plus 13 bonus tracks of stereo versions, alternate takes and backing tracks. Recommended for fans of the California sound.
Psychedelic Surf Pastiche!.......2003-12-21
Dean Torrence has long been overlooked via Jan Berry's awesome writing and arranging skills, and also from the fact that he was not always used as a vocalist on many of the Jan & Dean hits (Tony, Vic & Manuel were first, followed by Sloan & Barri). The other vocalists have proverbially thrown it in Dean's face over the years, making it so that he ends up looking like a schmoe. Furthermore, notorious "re-telling" of events, various MOR releases with Mike Love (during the '80s) and mullett haircuts haven't helped Dean emerge as a serious artist. However, re-evaluation of his talent is in order, due largely to this fantastic release (and various 45s with the same band, before and after SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY).
Recorded in 1966 in Jan's wake (Berry was in a coma), and as an attempt to keep the Jan & Dean name alive, SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY has Torrence and band providing a moody/mellow sound that adds to the notion of its era. The album proper was linked together by the sound of rain showers (with each track being lyrically about rain, as well).
"Like a Summer Rain" (co-written with Gary Zekley) is not only the crowning achievement of RAINY DAY, but is amongst the best Jan & Dean songs ever. Dean's falsetto vocal is insane, the perfect inflection of a warm summer storm. His version of "Yellow Balloon" boasts a thick bassline behind a wall of vocals, making this psychedelic/surf arrangement echo-y and dense, reminiscent of the Pyramids and Chantays recordings from 1963-64. The high point of Sundazed's CD reissue is "California Lullaby"; recorded and released before the RAINY DAY sessions, it's a hand-in-glove fit with the rest, and an honest reflection of the Greater Los Angeles area's romantic geography. ("You can come with me to the mountain or the sea, if you want to/Everything that is mine, you can have it that's just fine with me now") Anyone living in L.A. knows that you can truly go to the mountain or the sea at any time (and with a keen sense of timing, you can still avoid the traffic).
Other highlights are: the exotica-influenced "Save for a Rainy Day Theme"; a Frankie Avalon-esque version of "When Sunny Gets Blue"; and an a-tonal take on the Lovin' Spoonful's "Rain on the Roof." I only wish they had included the earlier single take of "Like a Summer Rain" (titled "Here Comes the Rain"). Sundazed also released a 4-song EP containing instrumental versions of several RAINY DAY tracks not on the CD (and excellent liner notes on the back sleeve).
Unfortunately, this CD has too often been reviewed by smarmy journalists who don't like the material. A new aethetic might be to allow people who enjoy classic recordings to write positive reviews... not out of naivete, but out of honest-to-god insight. SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY is my pick for a damp Los Angeles afternoon. Viva Dean!
