Album Description

This stellar 20 bit remastered double CD release includes all of the songs performed by Wes Montgomery's quartet, at the Paris' Theatre des Champs Elysees on March 27, 1965. It is arguably the best live recording of Wes Montgomery and the sound quality is excellent. Accompanied by the outstanding pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Arthur Harper, drummer Jimmy Lovelace and special guest, tenor saxophone virtuoso Johnny Griffin, this release is a testimony to the magic of Wes Montgomery's guitar playing, and his ability to innovate and excel in a live performance setting. Definitive Records. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Live CD.......2005-11-10

I was skeptical at first. If the recording is so great, why hasn't it come out before now? But I bought the cd anyway and was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if it is better than "Live at the Half Note" or "Full House," but it is definitely on the same level as those two cd's. And if you consider that Wes' best playing seems to be what he does live, it is a must have for any jazz guitar fan.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't hear it, don't need to........2005-09-29

I'm a professional jazz guitar player and I have almost everything by Wes, as I should since he is the one and only toff player in jazz guitar. I don't have this one CD, but I don't even need to. I know that what Wes is doing here is astonishing, simple, real, honest and overwhelming, as is every single note he has ever played. The stars given by every one here shows I can't be wrong. As a study I have taken solos by Wes and the most impressive thing is not the technical complexities at all - Wes is rather simple - but how his mind must have worked, and this you can feel when playing along with him. His mind is always one or two bars ahead, so the "simple" becomes misteriously impossible and this is the trace of the genius; once you hear it you go "my god, this is so simple, how didn't I think of this before?" It's like Beethoven's 9th, so simple, so obvious and so beautiful. This man represents the spirit of jazz in the most loving way and this is why I arrogantly wrote this review of a CD I never heard.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Marvelous !!!.......2005-06-12

this is as good as it gets for Wes Montgomery's live playing- a very uptempo night of playing with lotsa chops... i don't like the actual recorded sound of the recording as much as "Smokin' at the Half Note"- seems like there is more treble in Wes' amp settings than i am used to or maybe it was just the settings of the tape recorder 0r P.A. board... still, this is a ferocious night of Wes' playing with more of a Bebop feel than Swing in the style- GRRREAT JAZZ !!! a wonder-full compliment to "Smokin' at the Half Note" which has a warmer, softer vibe in that club concert... if you love Wes- you gotta hear this recording !!!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for guitarists and Wes completists only........2005-03-02

Wes is admittedly more "aggressive" in his playing on this occasion, partly due to his band mates and the nature and length of the program. Unlike the grooving, always "in the pocket," rhythm section of "Smokin' at the Half Note" (Kelly, Chambers, Cobb), the Harold Mabern-led rhythm section gives the music a forward edge, or emotive quality, suggestive of Coltrane and McCoy. The result is often music based on tension and release rather than melodic inventiveness--leading to some purely "physical" playing and grandstanding on the parts of Mabern and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (the two ballads opening the second disk are my favorite moments of the concert).

The audio is acceptable--and thankfully the balance favors Wes' guitar, which sounds as "fat" and consistent as ever. But I suspect this recording won't wear as well with me and other non-guitarists as his meetings with Wynton Kelley, Milt Jackson, and Jimmy Smith, not to mention the classic Riverside studio albums. If there were more of Wes on record, I'd give this one 4 stars. Pick it up only if you have "Smokin'," "Full House," and "The Incredible Artistry."

5 out of 5 stars Wes turned it out.......2004-11-14

got to hear this whole set&was feeling it from start to end. Wes&His Band knocked it out.I was already diging His Live One Smoking at the Half Note but this One is even more tighter if you can beleive that.Wes with His Signature playing&Styling just moves you.strogn arrangements.some of His Albums back in the day didn't always Highlight him properly as this Set does so well.enjoy!!!

Yeah brother cats, we all had the Wes video recorded in Belgium. I know you jazzcats like me had the Wes video (I had the VHS now I have it in DVD), the one the begins with this version of Impressions, so you know how good is this stuff. I could not add nothing more because you know what an exceptional music is the music you have here. But I can say to fill this white page that this reissue is really well done by Gambit. Three european shows on a single cd. They're short shows for sure. But absolutly to have if you are in love with Wes, like me. I'm mad about Wes. But let's hear what he does on Trane's Impressions. I mean. His talent was mindblowing... This music has been recorded in 1965 and Wes sounds light years ahead still today! The tunes list is a little bit repetitive of course (anyway repetita juvant), you have three versions of Twisted blues, a couple of Here's that rainy day, another couple of Jingles, but .. you know that Wes really could create very different versions of the solo for one song, really IMPROVISING. His melodic gift was so amazing that he didn't play cliches, he really reinvented the solo each time following his incredible rhythmic sense. Impressive only if you don't know how magic Wes was. Here you'll find again the reasons why Wes is considered the best of them all and one of the greatetst musicians that ever lived. The bands that played with Wes were great. Harold Mabern trio and Martial Solal combo did fantastic job in supporting Wes. If you have a good Wes collection you have to own this. It is an important chapter in his history.

5 out of 5 stars A real treasure!.......2005-11-14

This Gambit release features 79 minutes of Wes Montgomery live in Belgium, England and Germany in 1965. Wes plays at his absolute best on the three sessions, two of which include one of his most exciting quartets ( with Harold Mabern, Arthur Harper and Jimmy Lovelace). The recording quality is very good throughout the CD. Serious fans will want to grab this item right away, before it goes out of print.

    Album Description

1965 was a busy year in Bill Evans' career, beginning with a New York studio session on February 3, accompanied by Israels and Bunker. The session was issued as Trio 65. The trio then began a European tour where they were recorded in Paris on February 13. This is the concert concluded on the current release, which was taken from a radio broadcast. As a bonus, we have added a rare radio broadcast from New York's Birdland, which also features Chuck Israels on bass, but with Paul Motian on drums. The announcer is Sidney "Symphony Sid" Torin, whose voice and pet phrases are well-known by Jazz fans. Torin presented many live broadcasts from Birdland, the Royal Roost, the Hi Hat and other venues, which were fortunately saved for posterity by the likes of Boris Rose and a few more aficionados, who were eagerly waiting at home with their recording machines, ready to capture the broadcasts' every note. That's probably how these three tunes were preserved. Lonehill Jazz. 2007.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2005-05-04

I got a really old scratchy CD of this concert, but the sound blows me away. Coltrane's one and only live version of A Love Supreme (actually he performed parts of it live later, but these are lost to history) is truly a revelation. It is much less meditative than the studio version, with a hard edged sound that is typical of Coltrane's live performances.

Acknowledgement: Unfortunately this track, the most famous, is also the least inspired. Coltrane seems almost weary during his solos, and the repeated Love Supreme motif in several keys seems forced and sloppy this time. There is no chanting. The tune simply breaks off strangely.

Resolution: This movement, representing Coltrane's resolution to give up drugs and follow the "esteemed path" is a brutal, agonising channeling of pain. Coltrane at one stage makes a noise I have never heard on a sax before - a kind of puffing asthmatic sound that is rather disturbing. The general atmosphere is one of pain and anguish, which is very suitable for the movement.

Pursuance: This movement, representing Coltrane's pursuance of the "love supreme", is even more far out than the previous movement. The performance of "Pursuance" here is widely regarded as a masterpiece of improvisation, and I can't argue with that. Trane had taken a big step towards the avant-garde by this time, and you can hear it.

Psalm: If anything this is even farther out than "Pursuance", because there is no beat. Trane almost totally ignores the words to his poem, and after about two bars from the original version he goes way, way out. He does a call and response series, in which he barks out a motif in an avant garde screech, then answers it with a melodious and reflective motif.

Impressions: A ten minute bass solo precedes an ear-stretching series of solos by Trane that almost totally obliterate the original melody. When the head of the tune reappears at the end, it is almost unrecogniseable amongst the squeaks and hoots.

The version I have also includes Naima. This is my favorite version of this Coltrane standard; Coltrane's 1965 sound stretches the boundaries of the old Quartet sound, so that the usually reflective, peaceful tune suddenly vanishes in a welter of emotive screaming - before miraculously returning at the end, unscathed. This is truly a remarkable performance.

2 out of 5 stars For Diehard Coltrane Fans Only, I Think.......2003-08-14

I think you have to be a really serious fan of Coltrane to enjoy this album. Without hearing another version of Love Supreme before listening to this one, I don't think you can appreciate the longer version. I would not want this to be one's first exposure to John Coltrane - older and less unconventional pieces like Equinox, My Favorite Things, and others might be a better place to start. I am only a casual Coltrane fan, and I was put off by both tracks.

This performance has been issued under several labels, one which added Naima as a bonus track.

                5 out of 5 stars SUPREME.......2002-03-26

If you know and love John Coltrane's quintessential "A love supreme" then you also need to hear the version included in this performance. Following on from the cathartic experiment that was "Ascension", this interpretation is much freer than the original as well as being fifteen minutes longer.

The group (Coltrane's "classic" quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums) are all on excellent form and although they adhere to the same four-part structure of the studio recording, things start to get really interesting during the "Pursuance" section which culminates in a frenetic duet between Coltrane and Jones. Then, in an extended "Psalm", Trane breaks free from the self-imposed restrictions of the original to produce a blistering coda of overtone exploration....

                5 out of 5 stars A Must Supreme.......2001-12-13

This is the only live version of 'A Love Supreme' and is really worth having it since everything played by Trane in Juan les Pins and Paris that summer is first class Trane.
