Album Description
Rodney Miller and Randy Miller's New England Chestnuts Vols. 1 & 2 are "classics" of the contra music genre. They were first released as LP records in the early 1980s. After 20 years of collective listening, the consensus has emerged that these recordings are the definitive musical statements of these traditional New England contra tunes. Rodney Miller's talent was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1983 when he was designated a "Master Fiddler." These two CDs are recommended listening for musicians, callers and listeners interested in hearing the music that has had America dancing since colonial times. The liner notes contain a wealth of information about New England contra music and dance. Here is the sound of classic New England contra music at its best.

This CD is the kind you can listen to over and over again and never tire of it. It Presents the old time favorite New England Contra dance tunes that we all grew up loving - Hulls Victory, Petronella, Steamboat Quickstep, Rory O'More, Road to Boston, White Cockade and others. These are all played with the kind of zest that Rodney Miller is famous for.

Album Description
America saw big changes in the 1960s and early '70s with new ideas, new mores, and new music. In New England, the contra scene was in ferment, with exciting things being done by bands like New England Tradition, The Canterbury Dance Orchestra and the Miller brothers. This recording, featuring Bob McQuillen, April Limber and Pete Colby, is a classic and has lost none of its magic with time. Bob McQuillen recently received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts recognizing his long contribution to folk tradition in New England.

Exuberant.......2006-06-25
This album, as I expected, is unfailingly uplifting and beautiful. I've heard McQuillen live before, and I think heard some of these tunes, I believe at Augusta Workshops once or twice, but was probably too busy whirling, smiling and laughing (contra dancing)to take serious note. So "take serious note"!! Great stuff - keep the tradition going...
