How many licks does it take?.......2007-03-28
While not 100% great to the core, this is a decent album to sit back and chill-out to. The combination of rich synthetic textures and dry vocals makes for a unique ambience. Peter's singing style can be an aquired taste for some, so listening to all eleven tracks in succession might be a challenge. Much like licking a Tootsie-pop to the chewey goodness at the center, you may end up crunching through the mass of the album and playing the songs you really like the most.
For me, listening to my favorite songs on this album is a nice break from the more aggressive electronica that I normally listen to. If fact, any song from this album would work very well in making a personal compilation of almost any style of electronic music.
The music itself is well designed and offers a lot of detail. Bass lines are fat, there's usually a nice groove to hook you in and good balance of texture and atmosphere.
My only complaint about Casting Shadows is that while any one song you listen to is great, I wish there were maybe one or two more instrumental tracks to break the vocal monotony....either that, or perhaps a different vocalist on a couple of tracks, such as a colaborator, would have been nice. The last song, "In Time" is instrumental, and is a very nice song...but it's - the last song.
But despite my minor complaint, I highly recommend adding this to your library whatever style of electronica you listen to.
Excellent and ehhh...........2007-03-27
it sounds strange to say both - but the songs that are good, are Excellent and the others are just good.
Absolutely amazing..........2006-09-30
The title really says it all. It's a mellow disk, but absolutely stunning. Peter's voice is haunting and beautiful, and Markus's talent really shines through in the music. The songwriting is amazing in every vocal track, and even the instrumental "In time" is emotional. Kein Zurück really stands out as a heartfelt track, even if you don't speak German. If you're going to buy one CD, this should be it. Flawless masterpiece.
Gorgeous.......2006-02-20
There's little here that is dance-floor groovy in the way of 'Spectators'. That doesn't detract from the album, however, as the songs are gorgeous--arguably their best work as songwriters. I have to admit it didn't impress me at first (especially after the more catchy, upbeat 'Spectators') until I listened to it late at night with the music up and lights down. It was then that I realized just what they had accomplished on this album. It's not the best to dance to, but this is my favorite Wolfsheim album to just sit and listen to. The arrangements are lush and beautiful, and the vocals are rich and stirring. Surprisingly (for such a mellow album), it worked very well live, too. This is one of my all-time favorite albums.
It grew on me.......2005-11-13
I owned this disk for a year before I really listened to it. I tore the plastic off it and listened to the first track in quiet anticipation. It did not have the tone I expected from the first few lyrics I had read and to this day I do not like the second track. So I tossed it into a drawer and forgot about it, disappointed that it did not live up to the other disks put out by the group. Later, I had my ipod on random and heard the other tracks and they haunted me. They were stuck in my head. I heard them over and over. I think the strength of this group has always been its lyrics. They are profound and they mean different things to different people at different points in their lives. There are songs I heard nearly 10 years ago that were meaningful then that are still meaningful, but they mean something else to me now. This disk does not disappoint. I hope the group continues to produce music. It is the soundtrack of my life.

Product Description
The Plague of Crafty Guitarists - volume one Since Robert Fripp began the first Guitar Craft course March 25th, 1985, over 2,000 beginning, aspiring, and professional musicians from around the world have come in contact with Guitar Craft principles and practices. This CD is the first in a series that documents recent recordings by a few so-called "Crafty Guitarists" who have applied and/or assimilated (or perhaps completely missed?) the work of Guitar Craft. The tracks here represent one small slice of a diverse and growing body of new music being generated by the global mobile community of musicians within the extended Guitar Craft family.

LINER NOTES
Steve Ball Online Diary - Thursday July 10, 2003
"Ongoing discussion with Amy and Bill in the DGM office in LA about a potential project for the fall:
a compilation of music from former League of Crafty Guitarists and Guitar Craft-related musicians. There seems to be a need for this for both audience and musicians.
I remember speaking with Jim Sullivan, Boston Globe Music Editor in 1989 about the fact that over the next 20 years he was likely to see an entire generation of musicians sprout up all over the world full of former members of the League. He had just seen the League play the Paradise and was intrigued by these strange musicians and their odd tuning and practices.
Fourteen years later, Jim would likely be surprised by the list of current and former League and Guitar Craft musicians who are soon to receive an invitation to participate in a compilation. The draft list of invitees is impressive. Perhaps later this month or next, I'll have the gumption to share this list. For now, best to get the project planned and launched first."
Special thanks to: David Singleton (who named this project ! ), Robert Fripp, and the extended global Guitar Craft family.

Customer Reviews:
A Pleasant Surprise........2000-04-03
I caught Leigh's performance at a local bookstore and bought her CD on the spot. She is a pleasure to listen to. I'd no idea how tense I was after a long road trip and a family get- together, until I encountered her singing before a roomful of coffee-sipping admirers (every seat taken)... and felt the tension drop from my shoulders like baggage thoughtlessly forgotten and carried long after the destination had been reached. I can add nothing to the comments of the previous reviewers, other than to suggest to the reader that Leigh Hilger sings with the voice of an honest fellow traveller and friend, reminding you to stop a moment, smell the coffee, and lay your burden aside for a little while.
Unexpected Gem.......2000-02-07
Browsing the shelves of CDs at my radio station, I happened upon this one, luckily decided to play it, and absolutely loved it. Especially excellent tracks include "Willi Brown", "Rushing Water", and "Rosalee". If you like folksingers such as Dar Williams, Nanci Griffith, and Richard Shindell, the work will appeal to you.
From love stories to ghost stories, this CD's GREAT!.......2000-01-31
Leigh's first CD is a delight. Her vocal quality is rich and complex, and her songs go right to the center of your heart. She reinforces it all with her own detailed guitar work. The sound quality of this recording puts you right in the room with Leigh, and her backup musicians round out the perfomance nicely. From the sweet nostalgia of "Rosalee" to the unexpected ghost story in "The Ballad of Silas Ebb" all of Leigh's material peaks your curiosity and holds your attention. Highly recommended acoustic music from a talented singer/songwriter.
First class folk singer/song writer as evidenced here!.......1999-11-07
Leigh Hilger has grown int a first class singer/songwirter. On this album Leigh has done some amazing compositions in the Americana/Folk music arena. Casting Shadows trancends the folk genre and takes you an area of music few others do. I compare her music to other great women such as Bonnie Rait, Nancy Griffith, Marcia Ball, Christine Kane etc. You will love this album regardless of your music preference. It has it all!
