Awesome Classic Yaz!.......2007-05-17
Love this album! I had it stolen a few years ago and its great to finally get it again. You can't go wrong with Yaz. Allison Moyet has an amazing voice!

"Don't bother with this one"? Somebody needs to open his ears, because there's not much rational explanation for liking the first Yaz album but not liking this. Sure, it's darker by maybe 10 or 20 percent, but the melodies are as strong as ever, and Moyet's vocal turns can move and hurt and uplift here just as they did on the debut, if not more.
The opening and closing tracks alone make this one indispensable to any fan of eighties synth. Very few albums have stood the test of time this well. This is a classic. Get used to it.
vince clark might be my dad..........2006-06-02
as a thirty-someething dood, whenever i look back on my defining teenage years, i realize that vince clark perhaps had a bigger impact than anyone else. it started with erasure in about 87, and i quickly discovered both depeche mode and yazoo -- it's not YAZ, either, people. YazOO. :) from age 14-18, i pretty much listened to all three bands non-stop. and now everytime i listen to a vince clarke incarnation, i can't help but look back fondly.
yazoo's second album, while not hugely different from 'upstairs at eric's' does represent a band's evolution. for one, alison moyet's presence is much more apparent. the album opener, 'nobody's diary,' might be the album standout--and that's no small compliment given vince's insanse proficiency at birthing high-quality tunes. secondly, the production on 'you and me both,' is much sparser, as is the instrumentation. much of vince's keyboard work feels restained and choppy, almost minimalistic. nothing on 'you and me both' is on par with synth classics like 'only you,' 'situation,' and 'the other side of love' (available only the import version of 'upstair's at eric's), but 'you and me both' is much more intimate album. it's almost as though vince and alison invited you over to tea. thirdly, it's a lot more experimental than 'upstairs.' songs like 'good times' and 'sweet thing' don't sound like anything off 'upstairs.' listen to 'sweet thing' and it's not hard to imagine prince singing it. fortunately, we don't have to because alison moyet was and is a first-rate vocalist. i wish more people were familiar with her work because you'd be hard-pressed to find a purer, more expressive voice. it's a compliment to her that blessed with those pipes she resists the tendency great vocalists have to over-sing and over utilize the vibrato (anyone who's watched 'american idol' lately knows what i'm talking about).
vince, for his part, experiments with sounds like he never had before upto that point. it's really quite something to hear him layer tiny synths bleeps and blips over faux-strings. and to think he was probaly 23 or 24 at the time is nothing short of amazing. when you take a look back at the vince clark canon, it's pretty remarkable. i doubt anyone has ever had more UK top 40 singles.
the real gem, however, of 'you and me both' is 'state farm.' i couldn't really get into it the first time i heard it. as i got little older, though, the song's brilliance really came shining throught. it's a funk-inspired stomper accented by alf's clever word play and spot-on delivery. and it's always fun to sing 'who buys the tickets and who buys the clothes, puts the liquor in his stomach and the powder up his nose.'
i always wonder what a third yazoo album might've sounded like. i like to imagine that they would continue to grow darker, more experimental, and more seductive. unfortunately we'll never know. fortunately, however, we'll always two stellar albums by one of the most underrated duos in history.

Remember the good days of music. Kids these days are getting into the 80's. You can see why when you listen too this. Im glad vince clark split up to create erasure. However I wish he would of made more yazoo music.

These comments apply to "Upstairs at Eric's" and "You and Me Both" by Yaz:
Turned on to these albums in high school in a very interesting way (long story ... :->), I have not been able to get these albums out of my head. (The fact that later I was able to connect with one of my supervisors over these very albums is another very interesting story ....)
I bought the cassettes when they first came out, then later the CDs, and somewhere along the line lost the CDs and bought them again recently.
These albums are most excellent, with a classic late 1980s/ early 1990s feel with a slightly different twist. I like the beat that is indicative of the time, but the lyrics, the language, has a meat, a bite, with much more depth than a lot of the music of that same time.
To me, a music library is just not complete without these two albums, and now that I've verified my previously purchased CDs are not merely misplaced in a move but truly lost, I feel much more complete now that I've repurchased these albums and have them in my musical collection.
I could discuss each track in laborious detail - but suffice it to say, if you're even remotely a fan of late 1980's/early 1990's music, you'll love Yaz.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

Unless you went to this concert and want a reason to remember the evening, I can't imagine why you'd want to own the CD. It has all the disadvantages of a live concert (acoustics are poor), and applause occurs on top of the performances. The interpretations of the music by the vocalists Tune and McGovern are poor. Save yourself the money....

An Absolute Must For Lovers of Music and History.......2001-01-20
This album contains the best works of George Gershwin, played by the very best artists of the period. The quality of the recording is excellent, actually amazing considering that this recording was made in 1937. The music of the master, George Gershwin, and the authenticity of the playing is more than enough reason to buy the CD set. But there is more: The album consists of the complete two and one half hour historic radio program, broadcast as the announcer says "by short wave to the four corners of the earth." It is so moving that you can feel like you are experiencing it live. The 16 pages of liner notes that come with CD set have been carefully researched for historical accuracy and competent critical evaluation of the music. One could have wished the producers would have found room on the cover of the CD set to list Charles Previn, who conducted Concerto in F, which accounted for approximately thirty minutes of the playing time and for Nathaniel Shilkret and Nathaniel Finston who, as conductors, were the featured artists for another approximate half hour of playing time. One could only wish that there were only such minor complaints with all musical recordings. The producers deserve thanks for making this wonderful piece of history available to the public.
A real collector's item, especially for old-time radio buffs.......2000-09-24
This recording preserves,for all posterity and in quite listenable sound for its time, one of the most important and moving cultural events of the early twentieth century--the full-length memorial tribute to George Gershwin, the USA's greatest composer ever,IMHO.
This was broadcast on CBS Radio in September,1937, barely two months after the composer's shocking and untimely death from a brain tumor at the age of thirty-eight. All of his most famous pieces for concert hall are heard here,and the advantage of hearing them in a live performance is that they are not edited, as they often would have been in recordings made during that era. (Gershwin's own recording of the "Rhapsody in Blue",made in the 1920's in a recording studio,is rather severely cut.)
Many of the performers, such as Fred Astaire and Oscar Levant, give memorable performances,but there are a few clinkers. The great German conductor Otto Klemperer may be brilliant in Beethoven and Bach, but he was not the man to conduct Gershwin's Second Prelude, heard here in an orchestral arrangement. He has no feel for jazz idioms whatsoever, and he makes this slow, blues-like piece sound like a dirge out of Mahler or Bruckner. It is,sad to say, the worst performance of the Prelude I have ever heard. And whatever possessed the producers of this concert to get Lily Pons,with her pronounced French accent,to sing "Summertime", rather than an American soprano,which they could have gotten easily? It throws the whole "Porgy and Bess" segment out of whack.
That "Porgy" segment, however, is one of the most valuable historical documents ever recorded. It presents members of the original 1935 cast of the opera performing unedited versions of several arias,duets and ensemble pieces from the opera, conducted by Alexander Smallens, the original conductor. And it presents perhaps the only surviving recording of Ruby Elzy,the original Serena, singing "My Man's Gone Now". (Miss Elzy was NOT featured on the so-called Broadway cast album; Anne Brown,the original Bess,sang Serena's music on that one,as well as singing Bess and Clara's arias.) And we finally get to hear Todd Duncan perform "The Buzzard Song", which was cut from the opera for a very long time.
Fred Astaire's spoken tribute to Gershwin is very moving, and at one point, his voice is heard cracking with emotion. The announcer and narrator, however, speaks in that overenunciated, dramatic, actorish style which was apparently the norm for radio announcers of that period. He sounds as if he were getting ready to either impersonate Orson Welles, or audition for "Hamlet", and his style of speaking is almost quaint nowadays.
But this album is still irreplaceable.
An update to this review - This edition of the memorial concert is apparently out of print, and the concert itself has been reissued as part of the ongoing CD series "The Radio Years". DO NOT BUY THAT VERSION. It is vastly inferior to this one. This version has spectacular sound for its time, and the new reissue sounds as if had been recorded through a tin can. And not only is the sound bad on the reissue, but there is tons of surface noise and the program itself seems to be abridged.
We can only hope that the edition listed on this page will be re-issued some day. This historic concert deserves no less.

Great sampler of Gershwin's music.......2007-04-14
Classical music came from Europe. Jazz arose in the American deep south as a combination of multiple music genres, most noticeably black folk music and French influences. How ironic that it would take two descendants of Russian Jews to fuse the two together into a distinctly American style of music. The two composers are George and Ira Gershwin. George is the more famous of the two, but both by himself and with his sibling they composed multiple great scores of musics. Many of these have stood the test of time and are now commonly heard in the mass media; Rhapsody in Blue is the ultimate example, and it leads of this two-disc set. Other pieces were composed for operas (Porgy and Bess), Broadway shows (Funny Face), and movies. All of this and other works are found on this set. The recording is great, the sound quality is flawless and the compositions well chosen to provide 2+ hours of music. All told, a great buy for the price.
