Bunny Matthews, Off Beat New Orleans, September 1999
"The songs, one and all, are beautiful. Beautiful in the way that New Orleans is beautiful: tarnished, mildewed, waterlogged, stained by wine, loneliness and lust. Andi's B-Goes (vocalist Elisabeth Gill, fiddler Tom Marron, bassist Tom McDonald, drummer Mark Whitaker plus steel guitarist Dave Easley, trombonist Mark Mullins and raconteur Nino Bongiorno) deliver accompaniment that is minimalist perfection. Andi's guitar playing is like butter on hot French bread. His lyrics are as sweet as June's first Creole tomato: "Down in the bayou where the angels cry, the water gets high, the water gets high" At the completion of this particular song comes 30 minutes of recorded rain sounds. I can testify that, even after three hours of torrid lawn mowing, when you feel on the verge of cardiac arrest from the humidity, these sounds of precipitation will supply you with instant relief. It's aural iced tea.
About the Artist
The story of the B-Goes is really the story of founder Andi Hoffmann - native son of Bern, Switzerland, inspired singer/songwriter, restless traveler, seeker of poetry, and leader of various collections of world class musicians who continue to breathe sweet soul and funky fire into Hoffmanns vision of a multicultural roots music. The B-Goes was originally formed in Switzerland in 1989, when Hoffmann got together a group of Swiss musicians for a recording project.
