2-CD collection of the smartest and funniest show on the radio

This American Life is one the most popular yet most unusual programs on radio today, airing on public radio stations all across the country. Each week listeners tune in to hear riveting stories that explore the highs and lows of the human condition.

Host Ira Glass and the staff of This American Life selected some of their favorite segments for the This American Life: Stories Of Hope And Fear 2-CD set. Featuring segments by bestselling writer and humorist David Sedaris (Naked), Comedy Central's Daily Show correspondent John Hodgman and many others, this eclectic anthology addresses topics ranging from gender reassignment to karaoke comedy, with over two hours of alternately hilarious and heart-breaking spoken performances set against a hip indie-rock and electronica musical background. Includes music by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead, Calexico, Morcheeba, Mogwai, Tortoise and others.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly heartwarming.......2007-07-03

I have a set appointment each Saturday to tune in to NPR for another introduction to "This American Life". I am thrilled that I have access to old shows on cd. This is ideal for a long road trip and conversation.

5 out of 5 stars mesmerized.......2007-02-12

I was fortunate to receive this CD the day before I had a 2 hour car ride ahead of me. I put in the CD and I have no memory of the trip, the traffic, or the route I took. I play the CD frequently, and I learn something new each time. Ira Glass - you are the best.

5 out of 5 stars Radio Documentaries For Long Drives.......2007-02-01

I've listened to This American Life going on 8 years now either on NPR or on-line on the website. Great program, this is the 3rd compliation CD I have purchased and I must say that this was interesting especially the Stories of Fear. I am interested in how the human psyche handles fear given certain levels of stress introduced through everyday normal situations. Quite frankly it can be more than a little funny. The story that really clicked with me was On Hold No One Can Hear You Scream, one persons ordeal dealing with an unresponsive phone company. This is a great cd. Better than the last compliation cd for This American Life.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best but worth a one time listen.......2007-01-20

This American Life is my favorite show of all time. I listen to it religiously. I didn't like this one. It's kind of depressing, whereas I have listened to the other CD's over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Regular Folks With Amazing and Hilarious Stories.......2007-01-05

Ira Glass has a job that everyone would love to do. He gets to interview people and learn about life lessons. I have listened to the NPR show on occassion but could never follow the program faithfully. If you are like me, then this will be your solution. In this 2-CD collection, there are stories about hopes and fears in a new light. I think that the 2nd CD is the most interesting of the 2 CDs.

The story that really made an impression was Julie Synder's dilemna with cell phone customer support (CD 2 Track 2). She really articulates her frustrations that we can all relate to. I worked as an software engineer and dealt with customer service issues on occasion. It's good to see how sometimes mis-communication and tempers often flair into after-the-fact humor. You definitely see the views from both sides which sheds some light on problems with customer support. But, the problems with a phone company just compounds to the humor with technology issues that you cannot imagine. Believe me, it's laughter after laughter but you soon realize that we can all relate to it.

Another touching but eerie story (CD 2 Track 3) is about a closeted son who takes care of his mother. It borders on the unreal as the interviewer learns about the ordeal with his father than suddenly changes things completely. As you listen, there are intimate details that you feel as if you are in the same room. This is one of the true experience that you lack with TV today. It just seems to be all about the shock factor and nothing about the fact that we are all human. It's wonderful that NPR still has shows out there for everyone to listen instead of being glued to the tube.

If storytelling and oral history often seem like endangered species in a culture dominated by disposable infotainment, NPR host Ira Glass could be seen as something of a preservationist, his low-key passion for the magic moments that inform everyday life the driving force behind his successful This American Life radio series. This second series anthology culls its 10 stories onto two discs loosely centered around notions of "Crimebusters" and "Crossed Wires." And while professional writers like Sarah Vowell and David Sedaris (whose bemused take on nationality-diverse French class attempting to explain their various impressions of Easter is characterized by mounting, masterfully constructed hilarity) participate, they are hard-pressed to better the tales of everyday people that are the collection's de facto focal points: a rookie cop's efforts at corralling a household-invading squirrel turning into chaotic slapstick worthy of Sellers or Benigni; a Beverly Hills teen and his father making war, then peace over a spiraling drug problem; Starlee Kline and Mekons founder Jon Langford forming a band of strangers solely through classified ads. Less enamored of their own voices and ideas, those tales of "everyday people" are the collection's true treasures. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Crimebusters and Crossed Wires is a collection of ten stories, with true tales of (sometimes hapless) crimefighters and investigators of all sorts on one CD, and real-life adventures in miscommunication on the other.

From a bungling, squirrel-chasing cop who burns, bloodies, and tears apart a new house in pursuit of the rogue rodent, to a father who resorts to tapping his drug-using teen's phone, Crimebusters and Crossed Wires offers comical and poignant insight. Among the storytellers featured are best-selling writers David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best This American Life ever.......2007-05-07

Contains Squirrel Cop which is the stuff of urban legends.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Wonderful!.......2007-01-20

I have listened to this over and over. It's so funny. I absolutely love it!
PS
Don't take this to the gym with you because you won't be able to do any exercise from laughing so hard.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the best of TAM!.......2005-12-19

I am a regular and avid listener of This American Life (TAM) and have loved Squirrel Cop since I first heard it on the radio. Then when they paired that amazing, anonymous confession of rookie cop bravado with the equally hilarious essay of language barriers by David Sedaris...I knew I had to have this CD set.

Since receiving them, I have listened to all the stories several times (and a few range into dozens of times). Each and every story is worth listening to more than once. The son and father who work out a drug problem by simple "spying on your kid", the lessons learned by being a band geek, and the newest, greatest party/dinner question of all time - it's a collection of stories that are diverse yet centric to life as a 21st century human.

The stories never get old, as I find more in them each time I listen, like petals opening in a blooming flower. I play them while I travel, at work in my office, at home while cleaning and for anyone who has never heard of TAM.

It has now become a topic of office discussion and I've had to buy more copies to give as gifts. In fact, at a recent gift exchange, it was the most sought after present there.

You have to get these CDs! If you're life if full of stress, involves a long commute or you just need a diversion from your everyday life - then here's the CD set you need!

5 out of 5 stars For people who enjoy storytelling. . ........2005-09-25

"This American Life" is fantastic, eclectic, unusual, and often funny. The art of storytelling is dying in America. This collection of stories breathes new life into it. Some of the stories are laugh out-loud funny ("The Little Mermaid") and some are thought-provoking, but all are worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars This American Life Rocks!.......2004-12-20

This second volume of "the best" of "This American Life" is another gem! Each of these stories is amazing in its own right, and each is a perfect example of what a phenomenal show TAL really is.

Most of these stories are on the humorous side, which is really just one side of the show; however, it's still a well-rounded collection. If you are trying to turn someone on to the show, this is an excellent CD to introduce them to it.

The only thing that I didn't like about the CD was the time between Vols. 1 & 2. Come on, TAL...give us more of the best!

"Ice Cold Ice," in which Bob Mould rails against "barren lands and barren minds" and Grant Hart falls in on the supercatchy chorus, exemplifies the Hüsker Dü career development that peaks on this final album. Without sacrificing the emotional intensity of earlier albums, the Minneapolis trio beefs up the guitar-based melodies and sneaks in pop songcraft in lieu of the old fast-and-loud hardcore style. On this 1987 double album, as usual, guitarist Mould supplies the personal songs ("Standing in the Rain"), while drummer Hart remains more broadly political ("Tell You Why Tomorrow"). --Steve Knopper

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pure Pop for Punk People.......2007-06-22

No, it's not the feverish, raging genius of Zen Arcade and the 8 Miles High cover. But it's unfairly maligned as "soft" and "corporate". I unfortunately remember mainstream music from 1987, and Warehouse is a far cry from Winger. Bitter introspection and rumination mixed with super-catchy, Lennon/McCartney-esque melodies and choruses. Thrown in bold relief, it's easy to see how badly Bob, Grant & Greg have been ripped off the past 20 years. An indie rock landmark.

5 out of 5 stars this album absolutely kicks backside.......2007-02-15

If you like melodic rock that combines fantastic songwriting with high energy performances and insightful lyrics, then this album is for you. However, be warned that this is not your father's Husker Du. Gone are the brief noisefests played at breakneck speed. With 'Warehouse' you have a slew of catchy rock songs that are wonderfully diverse in their structures. The production is good, and although there is only one guitar, Bob Mould creates a wonderful droning wall of sound with his open tunings that allow him to strum all the strings while fingering individual notes. Both Mould and Grant Hart contribute solid numbers, with Mould clearly the songwriting leader. The emotion and energy in numbers such as "Up in the Air" "Turn it Around" "No Reservations" "It's Not Peculiar" and "These Important Years" cannot be described in words - you just have to listen to the album. Old-school Husker Du fans may resent the bands shift from post-punk to rock, but music lovers will appreciate the fruits of this transition immensely

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Final Release.......2006-10-06

That this record gets better listener reviews than Flip Your Wig drives me crazy. Yes, there are some very catchy pop tinged songs on this release that I really do like but this record as a whole totally lacks the intensity of the SST works. Am I just a bitter fan who wanted to keep the band small and non-corporate? -Maybe, okay almost certainly.- I do understand that bands evolve and their sound changes ( I feel your pain Metallica fans!) with each trip to the studio but this recording sounds totally phoned in and forced. No, it's not terrible but clearly is the work of a band well on there way to imploding. If you are a fan you should certainly have this in your Husker Du library but if you are not familiar with the band start at Zen Arcade and work your way to this one.

5 out of 5 stars "Familiar places that we turned into gardens".......2006-04-04

Warehouse: Songs and Stories was the last Husker Du studio album. It was released in 1987. They are one of my all-time favorite bands and they seemed to get better and better with each album they made. In Warehouse they left their fans with a double-album filled with great tracks and absolutely no fillers. It's unfortunate that they broke up seemingly so soon, but both Grant Hart and Bob Mould continued with excellent solo records (I especially recommend Intolerance by Hart and Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain by Mould) as well as new bands Nova Mob and Sugar. Here is the warehouse-full of awesome tracks offered on this album:

"These Important Years" (Mould) 3:49: An excellent track to begin the album. Great rocker.
"Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope" (Hart) 3:11: Grant Hart kept getting better and better as a songwriter and here he offers up some amazing rockers that even have a slight country rock sound. This track just flies and never lets up. The guitar solo is yeehaw good!
"Standing in the Rain" (Mould) 3:41: One of Mould's more popular tracks but it is not one of my favorites. It's good, of course, but seems a bit mundane.
"Back From Somewhere" (Hart) 2:16: Another country-style, yeehaw rocker by Grant Hart. I like Hart's vocals on this one (yeehaw style again).
"Ice Cold Ice" (Mould) 4:23: One of my favorite Mould tracks here. It begins with menacing guitar and then rocks. I wish Hart's backing vocals were clearer as I think it would have made the song even better. It sounds great on the live album The Living End.
"You're a Soldier" (Hart) 3:03: This song is just OK. I can actually take it or leave it. Anti-war songs are so prevalent and this one isn't very special. I don't like the backing vocals and the line "knocking over everything that's standing in your way. Can you tell me just how many did you kill today" line sounds like another song, but I can't put my finger on which song that is.
"Could You Be the One?" (Mould) 2:32: This is probably the most recognizable song from this album. They made a music video for it. I never thought I liked it that much but I find myself humming this track a lot, so it must be pretty addictive.
"Too Much Spice" (Hart) 2:57: Another yeehaw rocker by Hart. I love this stuff! I like the lyrics and Hart's vocals are crisp and clear and not barely audible like on some of his tracks. Definitely a sing-along-to song. And a rockin' guitar solo, too.
"Friend, You've Got to Fall" (Mould) 3:20: Catchy track. Up there with "Ice Cold Ice" and "Up in the Air" as my favorite Mould track on this album. Great guitar as always.
"Visionary" (Mould) 2:30: This track is OK, but is not a memorable as most of the others here. I don't care for the chorus that much.

"She Floated Away" (Hart) 3:32: A nice change-of-pace. It has a hard, pulsating beat between the verses, but at the verses and chorus it has a transporting almost gospel-like quality (well, not as gospel as "She Can See the Angels" off Hart's solo album Intolerance). Interesting track.
"Bed of Nails" (Mould) 4:44: Rough Mould rocker that bites like a rusty saw. The "Please don't drive your nails into this heart of mine" line always bugged me as it seems very contrived.
"Tell You Why Tomorrow" (Hart) 2:42: A track that builds with intensity and also has a groovy bass line.
"It's Not Peculiar" (Mould) 4:06: Starts out with this pulsating riff which if OK but when Mould actually sings to this riff "It's not peculiar, there's nothing to devise at all-a-a-a-a-a-a-all right." Yuck. The verses leading up to it are actually pretty good, and Hart's higher backing vocals help it a little but it just bugs me.
"Actual Condition" (Hart) 1:50: Another Hart rocker, but my least favorite. This one is a bit too yeehaw for my tastes.
"No Reservations" (Mould) 3:40: Nice, slower-paced track.
"Turn It Around" (Mould) 4:32: This song is the only one on this track that I really do not like. It is almost embarrassing to listen to. I'm surprised Mould wrote it. It is just so contrived, silly, and mundane. I like the line "But the biggest thing to me is making this thing work for life." That really hits it home but most of the other lyrics and the musical aspect of the song I can definitely leave. Oh well, one ringer out of 20 is not bad.
"She's a Woman (And Now He is a Man)" (Hart) 3:19: I LOVE THIS SONG!! It may be my all-time favorite Grant Hart track! Great lyrics, great vocals, rocks, never lets up! I can't praise it enough!
"Up in the Air" (Mould) 3:03: Mould turns it around (so to speak) with this track. Excellent, catchy track. The chorus with the backing vocals is superb.
"You Can Live at Home" (Hart) 5:25: Appropriate ending to an incredible double-album. A long rocker that sounds like everyone is involved in the vocals and fades out. The bass really drives this one.

5 out of 5 stars Best album by someone I had never heard of........2006-01-14

I listened to this album, loved it, and bought every Husker Du album. Unfortunately, this is the only one I really liked. I still play "Up in the Air" all the time. Every song is a masterpiece. I then bought every Bob Mould album and every Sugar album. This is still the only one I love. I like pop rock with catchy choruses. This is the only must-have album that Bob Mould has been involved with, although he is a talented artist.

Album Description

Stories From Hollywood is a high-energy rock and soulful pop album featuring all original songs. Jon's band includes some of the best and well-respected musicians in the business. The eagerly anticipated album has been in the works for more than a year and showcases Jon's superb vocal range.

Don Grierson, Former Head of A&R at Capitol and Epic Records: "Jon Peter Lewis has real charisma as a person, a performer and recording artist. When I first heard Jon's new album, I was really excited by it. The songs are honest yet accessible and he sings them with warmth and conviction."

Corey Moss Senior Writer/Producer MTV: "With `A Little Less Conversation,' JPL gave one of the best performances in `American Idol' history, but he's outdone himself with his debut album. `Stories from Hollywood' is a collection of instantly-infectious songs, with clever, provocative lyrics. In other words, it's the sort of album you wished more former `Idols' dared to make. We knew he was a true entertainer, now we know the kid can write. In fact, JPL's at his best on `Amanda Grace,' with just an acoustic guitar accompanying his sweet falsetto.

Monica Rizzo, People Magazine: "Don't take a road trip without this CD. Jon Peter Lewis has many stories to share - all worth listening to."

Jessica Venditto, AI Magazine: "The long wait was worth it. For many of you who watched Season 3 religiously, you already know that Jon Peter Lewis, a.k.a. JPL has an undeniable talent. His new CD, Stories From Hollywood, allows you to discover it all over again. This eclectic combo of pop, alternative rock and a bit of the blues, mixed with strong vocals, great instrumentals and unique beats, showcases this artist as a star in the making."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's Interesting.......2007-05-25

I bought this for my wife who really loves JPL, but only knew of his performances on American Idol. Like most AI contestants' albums, the album is not representative of his performances there. Rather, it's his own style. I can't say that I love the album, but it's not terrible either. It's a good mix of styles, so you won't get bored with the same-sounding song over and over again.

Fun music. Won't get played on radio. You have to be a fan to enjoy it, and I do! Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars "Indie Idol - Jon Peter Lewis".......2007-04-22

This album has some of the best songs I've heard lately. Man From Amsterdam is one of them. It's definitely not one of those albums where every song sounds the same. As summed up by veteran DJ, JD Matthews, "It's one of those rare CDs that I can actually listen to over and over again, continue to enjoy, and still get something new out of it with each rotation. This is one CD purchase you should make. Give it a chance, and you'll understand why Jon is, indeed, the "Indie Idol."

On another note, Sky Elobar is Jon's bass player and a phenomenal musician. As a permanent member of Jon's band, he is a testament to Jon's talents. Sky only works with the best and most promising artists and musicians. Kudos to Jon, Sky, and all who were involved in making this superb album!!

5 out of 5 stars Sky - Why are you not getting credit for these songs?.......2007-04-04

The JPL album was for the most part written by Sky Elobar. Check out his last album with "7th House" entitled "412". I'm not sure why credit is not being given to Sky.

If you like these versions.... you will love the 7th House versions!!!

There are several "7th House" albums out there. Go get them.

Sky... we miss you guys in Pittsburgh, PA. There should really be a reunion show. (You should chat with Walter about it!)

5 out of 5 stars I beg you to try this........2005-07-04

It makes me feel so sad that i`m the first one to review this...Steve Wynn`s a genius and the songs here are pure edge, sharp as blade.Consider pearl jam musicians and and a terrific syd vicious alike punk voice together and there you`ve got TDS.But that brief description pays no justice to the album because there are at least 9 astounding songs here.If you like Galaxie 500,Sonic Youth you have to pay you due here and you will love this.Wynn`s guitar fuzz is so sharp that will rip your speakers for sure.Titles like " See that my grave is kept clean" show how talented this band was ....".....I`ve got two white horses following me ...and they`re waiting on my buriying ground..." Gorgeous. This is a criminally underrated but cult band for many.I used to be a fanatic of layered noise ( Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth) but TDS kick them all in the ass.

Album Description

Naxos' American Classics series stages something of a coup: world famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie performs on an exciting disc of music by one of America's leading living composers. Gramophone Artist of the Year Marin Alsop directs the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in stunning performances and to crown the release, Daugherty himself writes the fascinating sleeve notes. The London Times has described Michael Daugherty as "a master icon-maker" and hailed his "maverick imagination, fearless structural sense and meticulous ear." His music has the uncanny knack of speaking everybody's language at once while retaining the ability to surprise, move, stimulate, inspire and amuse. Commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2001, Philadelphia Stories is an orchestral travelogue of the sounds and rhythms of Philadelphia past and present. Cast in three movements: the first begins at sundown, the second, a Poe-inspired movement entitled Tell-Tale Harp after midnight, and the third at sunrise. UFO, written in 1999 for Evelyn Glennie, is inspired by unidentified flying objects and sounds, beginning with Traveling Music where the percussion soloist, in the guise of an alien from outer space, mysteriously enters the concert hall playing a waterphone and mechanical siren.

5 out of 5 stars Close Encounters Of The Colorado Kind.......2004-12-20

In its continuing exploration of American music and lesser-known U.S. orchestras, the budget label Naxos has given us one of its most provocative and innovative recordings to date. Michael Daugherty, the man behind the "Superman"-inspired "Metropolis Symphony", gives us two innovative works, "Philadelphia Stories" and the futuristic "UFO", a concerto for percussion and orchestra.

"Philadelphia Stories" is the composer's three-movement tone painting of the City of Brotherly Love, focusing in on aspects of street life ("Sundown On South Street"), the terror of Edgar Allan Poe ("The Tell-Tale Heart"), and the legacy of Leopold Stokowski ("Bells For Stokowski"). In this last movement, Daugherty imagines all the bells tolling in Philadelphia as the often-controversial conductor who put the Philadelphia Orchestra on the world map makes a visit to the Liberty Bell.

"UFO" shows off the impressive abilities of Scottish-born percussion maestra Evelyn Glennie in this concerto inspired, of course, by sightings of alien spacecraft in the night skies of Earth that have been reported since the Roswell incident of 1947. The piece is hugely reminiscent in sound and size of John Williams' score for Spielberg's 1977 sci-fi masterpiece CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, a trait that may or may not be intentional, but a trait that works quite well. Glennie's percussion abilities are second-to-none here.

Both works are bought together by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra under the inspired leadership of music director Marin Alsop, one of a handful of female conductors to lead an orchestra in major recordings. The Naxos sound technicians give her, Glennie, and the Colorado Symphony a first-rate sound on a relatively meager budget, resulting in an incredibly fascinating recording that is quite simply one of the best in 2004 insofar as classical music goes. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Ace-high selection of cowboy and Western tunes.......2004-10-07

Though the USA's continental frontier was settled nearly a century ago, the romance of the West lingers on in archetypes ranging from early settlers through modern-day cowboys. With Western films and TV classics having mostly exhausted their box-office gold, images of the West are now most often to be found in poetry and song. For many artists, like Wylie & The Wild West and the Sons of the San Joaquin, Western images and music are full-time musical pre-occupations, while for others, like Norman & Nancy Blake and Katy Moffatt, these themes are a thread in their tapestry of folk and country music.

This twenty track collection pulls together a variety of Western-themed pieces released on the Western Jubilee label, including throw-back harmony tunes, Western swing, cowboy poetry, and trail-dusted acoustic guitar folk (with and without Celtic and bluegrass flavorings). Highlights include the lush harmonies of the Sons of the San Joaquin, delicate guitar picking from Rich O'Brien, the poetic lyrics of Red Steagall and lyrical storytelling by Don Edwards and Norman Blake.

This is a great album of story and song, sure to be a favorite of both adults and children, and a perfect introduction to Western Jubilee's catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-01-08

As a Seneca mother, I really enjoyed this cd with traditional songs intermixed with Shanendoah's telling of how she "found" her voice. This cd is refreshing with Iroquois ideas represented easily so that even my three year old daughter recognized them -- her eyes lit up when she heard Grandma Moon singing! (I alway KNEW she could sing pretty," my daughter exclaimed.)

I recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars My 4 year old loves this!.......2003-05-17

My four and a half year old daughter loves this cd, we both do, really. Ms. Shenandoah's voice carries itself into your heart and holds itself there. The songs are haunting and uplifting at the same time. The narration is compelling and interesting. I can't wait to explore more of her work. This is a must-have cd, especially for children.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2001-03-05

I was so delighted with this album purchase. Musically, it is beautiful, and Joanne's voice is simply lovely! I recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful story & music - just wish she hadn't used "stupid".......2000-11-08

WE LOVE THIS CD. The story is beatifully told the music is eclectic, with a dash of blues, easy listening, country and just plain FUN. I highly recommend with one caveat ~ she uses the word stupid in the lyrics in the first song. Maybe it's just our family, but I cringe every time she bellows out "I'm just a stupid girl..." I usually lower the volume on that part. I have little ones and it's exactly the kind of terminology they'd pick up. That's the only reason I didn't give a whole-hearted five star rating. Other than that the CD is terrific. Everyone who gets in my car (great entertainment while driving to school) loves it. It's GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like a very successful children's recording.......1999-11-02

This album doesn't really give the full right to Shenandoah's enticing voice and the beauty of the harmonics, though it is fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Crisp & Coherent.......2004-03-18

Enjoying Classical music for over 50 years, I find it stimulating to listen to a body of work that captures your attention without offending. "Contrasts" is an excellant CD!
To the Classical Purist blending different musical period styles is for the most part an uncomfortable experience. However, from the Composer's point of view, it is a much more difficult task to be able to combine musical/period/styles and pull off a cohesive entity. "Hell's Angels" qualifies, with ease, as one of those rare orchestral pieces. Being a "Classical Purist" makes one content to whirl around in an eddy as opposed to enjoying the whole river and its many currents which freely intertwine. Dom's view

4 out of 5 stars Two Treasures, Two Trifles.......2003-08-26

The real find here is the 'Passacaglia for Orchestra' by a genuine master of American music, the under-appreciated Benjamin Lees, now in his 80th year. The muscular 11-minute 'Passacaglia' is based on a disjunct 24-note quasi-atonal cello theme that strikes me as a deconstruction of the theme from Bach's 'Art of Fugue,' although I have no idea if that was Lees' intention. It consists of the theme followed by nineteen variations and a coda. Lees' mastery of orchestration and compositional inventiveness get a real work-out here. There is metrical and rhythmic diversity (e.g., one of the variations is in 5/8), creative orchestration (one variation has growling trombone/tuba flutter-tonguing, another has hypnotic, but humorous, use of temple blocks), augmentation and diminution of the theme, brass chorales, leap-frogging strings, all leading to the coda for full orchestra with triumphant pealing bells, a joyous conclusion to a short but densely constructed piece that has been played many times by American orchestras but never, to my knowledge, recorded before. It is played brilliantly by the Oregon Symphony under its outgoing music director, the hugely talented James DePreist (the most misspelled conductor in recent memory), a man who has given many of us many memorable performances of 20th-century music. [As if happens, I have another DePreist/Oregon recording in my review pile, a collection of music by Oregon composer Tomas Svoboda.]

The Passacaglia is followed by a classic of American symphonic composition, the Fourth Symphony of Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987). It was composed for and premièred by Eugene Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra in 1954 and recorded by them shortly afterward. That mono recording, coupled with an effective suite by Louis Gesensway called 'Four Squares of Philadelphia,' was a staple of the old Columbia catalog for many years. Those performances have been transferred to CD on the Albany Label (and coupled with William Schuman's 'Credendum'); I don't have that CD but a quick listen of my old LP reveals that the Ormandy/Philly recording is more immediately effective that this DePreist/Oregon version. The current recording seems a bit recessed, particularly in the first movement. Also, the whirling violins in IV are a bit covered in the current recording, robbing the exciting finale of some immediacy. I can't say enough for the Oregon winds and brass, however, and suspect the covered strings are the result more of the CD's sound production than the orchestra or conductors doing. This symphony has long been a favorite and you owe it to yourself to familiarize yourself with it, either from this CD or the one on Albany.

The final two pieces here are by Michael Daugherty (b. 1954), who has had a run of recordings recently. I will say up front that I've yet to hear anything by Daugherty that made me want to hear it again. And that goes for these two pieces--'Sundown on South Street' from his Second Symphony, and 'Hell's Angels.' Daugherty's style tends to borrow a good deal from vernacular music--jazz, pop, rock--and frankly it seems to me that he makes a dog's breakfast of it all. Others, obviously, feel much more positive about it. 'Hell's Angels' is a concerto of sorts for bassoon quartet (three bassoons, one contra-bassoon) and it certainly is well-played by the soloists. However, there is such vulgarity and triviality inherent in the piece that I think it is better if I say no more.

Suffice it to say, I recommend this CD for the Persichetti and especially for the Lees. They account for about 38 minutes of the CD's total of 61 minutes.

One final note: I have indicated in some earlier reviews (primarily of re-releases on Naxos of pieces previously released on Delos and featuring the Seattle Symphony under Gerard Schwarz) that I thought the Delos label had gone belly up. Obviously I was wrong. I not only apologize for having suggested it, but hasten to add that I'm delighted to hear that they still exist. They have given us many fine recordings of American music over the years. I hope they continue to do so for many years to come.
